The Argonauts and writer/directors

Marshall, Grant January 2006 (has links)
The Argonauts is a one hundred and ten minute screenplay depicted in the genre of children's adventure film, set in the suburbs of Brisbane in the early 1990s. It tells the story of four friends who embark on adventure in an attempt to save their parents' shops from a corporate takeover. The exegesis explores the dual role of the screenwriter/director and the affect on the screenplay of the shifts in mindset required when these roles are undertaken by the same person. Screenwriting and directing are explored as two separate but interlinked disciplines. In this paper I have draw on my experience in these two roles to discuss their inter-relationship. In order to understand how the two roles of screenwriting and directing interact, challenge and compliment one another when carried out by the same person, I analyse the interplay of these roles within the specific areas of character, narrative and setting in the writing and revision of the screenplay, The Argonauts.

Loss to follow-up among participants in the real talk study: a brief motivational interview intervention to reduce teen dating violence perpetration in Boston

Velasquez, Gabriela Elizabeth 20 June 2016 (has links)
Loss to follow-up (LTF) is an important issue that can affect the validity of longitudinal studies. Further, LTF among adolescent study participants may be predicted by variables such as substance use, educational attainment, and demographic information. The purpose of this study was to determine if alcohol or marijuana use, high school completion, or demographic information was correlated with LTF among adolescent participants in the Real Talk Study. The Real Talk study is a randomized control trial that employs a brief motivational interview intervention in a clinical setting to reduce perpetration of teen dating violence (TDV) in Boston. Current participants of the Real Talk study who were eligible for follow up comprised the study sample (N=127). Baseline characteristics on age, gender, race/ethnicity, high school completion, alcohol use, and marijuana use were analyzed using Pearson’s Chi Square, and the level of significance set to p < 0.10. A post-hoc analysis was conducted on frequency of alcohol use using Pearson’s Chi Square. Of the total sample, 13% were LTF (n=17). The results of the analyses indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between those LTF and those retained for gender and drinking 6 or more drinks of alcohol per occasion. Females were more likely to be LTF than males (p<0.10), and those participants who responded “never” or “less than monthly” to the question, “how many times do you drink 6 or more drinks per occasion?” were more likely to be retained, or less likely to be LTF (p<0.10) than those who responded differently. While some of the results were consistent with the literature, it is also possible that the follow-up procedure for Real Talk ensured that there were minimal differences in LTF.

Corporeidade do ser adolescente com câncer na perspectiva da sexualidade

Dalegrave, Debora January 2013 (has links)
This study contemplates the search line Fundamentals and Practices of Nursing in Women's Health, Child and Adolescent, the Study Group on Health Care Life Stages (CEVIDA) Program Graduate in Nursing, School of Nursing, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Its main goal was to understand the perceptions of being a teenager with cancer on the corporeality in view of sexuality. Aiming to show the union of two concepts, largely demystified towards a purpose, which is to know the perceptions of adolescents about their bodies and their sexuality. The guiding methodology to the research was based on a qualitative study with a phenomenological approach, which allowed to cover the visible reality and understand the phenomena and processes that are updated daily in adolescents with cancer. This one, investigated the corporeity of being an adolescent with cancer in the perspective of sexuality. The research had as focus the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, in the Inrternment Unit of Pediatric Oncology. Counting to the participation of six teenagers, aged 14 to 18 years, the collection of information occurred through the creative Sensitive Method, starting with the following dynamics: Mental Mirror, Collective Text, Get an adolescent and Rain of Words, from July 2012. It was chosen for the use of hermeneutics as a method of interpretation of information, establishing four categories: Body image and way of being in the world; Sexuality; Limits and possibilities; From denial to acceptance; and Lessons of Life: the existing corporeity. Because of that, this study revealed the facticity of the disease, and its existence beyond the disease, from the comprehensive look, demonstrating the wealth of the world experienced by adolescents, providing deep reflection to the attention and the action exerted on themselves to preserve and cultivate life with responsibility, autonomous and free, making them protagonists of their permanent care, as human beings in the world. As well, sexuality can be observed in different situations and expressions, which proves that teens with cancer maintain within themselves the essence of being teenagers in the world. Under the look of nursing, this study came to qualify the care, establishing a link, knowing and rediscovering the process of adolescence in health care for adolescents with cancer. Effects of Mother-Daughter Communication on Adolescent Daughters' Beliefs and Experiences of Teen Dating Violence

Lantrip, Kali 17 October 2014 (has links)
Teen dating violence (TDV) affects nearly one third of adolescents in the United States and is increasingly one of the largest public health concerns of health researchers and practitioners. Parent involvement, and specifically messages communicated to children about healthy and unhealthy relationships, has potential to be a vital element of TDV prevention and intervention. Researchers have demonstrated that parent-adolescent communication has significant effects on adolescent risky behavior, but the effect of parent-adolescent communication on TDV has not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between mother-daughter communication quality, mothers' and daughters' beliefs about unhealthy relationships, and the dating violence experienced by adolescents. The sample was 58 adolescent daughters recruited from three rural Oregon high schools and their mothers. Self-report and observational data were collected from daughters and their mothers. It was hypothesized that (1) daughters' dating beliefs mediate the relationship between mothers' dating beliefs and daughters' experienced TDV, (2) mother-daughter communication quality mediates the relationship between mothers' dating beliefs and daughter's dating beliefs, and (3) mother-daughter communication quality mediates the relationship between mothers' dating beliefs and daughter's TDV. Structural equation modeling was used to test three path models where mother-daughter communication was represented by three different measures: daughters' report of having a quality conversation with their mother about dating in the past year, daughters' disagreement during observed mother-daughter communication, and daughters' disagreement during observed mother-daughter communication about dating. All three models were a good fit with the data, and significant associations were found between measures of mother-daughter communication, daughters' beliefs about dating, and daughters' experienced dating violence. Implications of this study include mother-daughter communication, perhaps a representation of a larger construct of mother-daughter relationship quality, as a point of intervention for adolescent girls' experiences of dating violence. Future research and clinical studies are required to further examine the relationships between parent-adolescent communication and TDV and the potential affect that parents may have on rates and experiences of TDV.

A Cultural Perspective of Achievement Motivation among Mexican-Origin Adolescent Mothers

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: The central focus of this dissertation was to build on prior research that has underscored the significance of investigating culturally informed values and beliefs to promote racial-ethnic minority youths’ adjustment. In particular, Study 1 examined how Mexican-origin adolescents’ endorsements of familism values contributed to and moderated established theoretical associations within the achievement motivation process (i.e., contextual environment/individual factors, motivational beliefs, achievement-related strategies) and ultimately informed educational adjustment over time, or 5 years postpartum. Findings from Study 1 supported hypotheses regarding the dual role of familism values as both a promotive and protective factor throughout the achievement motivation process. Importantly findings highlight familism as an important cultural asset to consider as a potential facilitator of Mexican-origin adolescent mothers’ postpartum educational attainment. In addition to examining the promotive and protective function of familism, Study 2 explored how constellations of culturally informed promotive and protective factors, based on familism values, familial ethnic socialization, mothers’ and adolescents’ education aspirations, and social support (from family, peers, and dating partners), directly informed Mexican-origin adolescent mothers’ educational adjustment postpartum. Three distinct profiles emerged across social, aspirational, and familial domains, when adolescents were in their third trimester of pregnancy. Profiles were distinguished by unique patterns among study variables as a function of different levels of assets and resources. Furthermore, coresidency and economic hardship emerged as significant predictors of membership into latent profiles; and membership in specific profile groups significantly predicted educational attainment five years postpartum. Patterns of promotive/protective factors identified in the current study illustrate the importance of considering how the combination of multiple factors, across culturally salient domains, work in tandem to inform Mexican-origin adolescent mothers’ long-term educational attainment. Overall study findings offer a comprehensive insight into how familism values and other culturally informed factors contribute to the achievement motivation process and educational adjustment of pregnant and parenting Mexican-origin adolescent. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Family and Human Development 2016
