Dalegrave, Debora January 2013 (has links)
This study contemplates the search line Fundamentals and Practices of Nursing in Women's Health, Child and Adolescent, the Study Group on Health Care Life Stages (CEVIDA) Program Graduate in Nursing, School of Nursing, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Its main goal was to understand the perceptions of being a teenager with cancer on the corporeality in view of sexuality. Aiming to show the union of two concepts, largely demystified towards a purpose, which is to know the perceptions of adolescents about their bodies and their sexuality. The guiding methodology to the research was based on a qualitative study with a phenomenological approach, which allowed to cover the visible reality and understand the phenomena and processes that are updated daily in adolescents with cancer. This one, investigated the corporeity of being an adolescent with cancer in the perspective of sexuality. The research had as focus the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, in the Inrternment Unit of Pediatric Oncology. Counting to the participation of six teenagers, aged 14 to 18 years, the collection of information occurred through the creative Sensitive Method, starting with the following dynamics: Mental Mirror, Collective Text, Get an adolescent and Rain of Words, from July 2012. It was chosen for the use of hermeneutics as a method of interpretation of information, establishing four categories: Body image and way of being in the world; Sexuality; Limits and possibilities; From denial to acceptance; and Lessons of Life: the existing corporeity. Because of that, this study revealed the facticity of the disease, and its existence beyond the disease, from the comprehensive look, demonstrating the wealth of the world experienced by adolescents, providing deep reflection to the attention and the action exerted on themselves to preserve and cultivate life with responsibility, autonomous and free, making them protagonists of their permanent care, as human beings in the world. As well, sexuality can be observed in different situations and expressions, which proves that teens with cancer maintain within themselves the essence of being teenagers in the world. Under the look of nursing, this study came to qualify the care, establishing a link, knowing and rediscovering the process of adolescence in health care for adolescents with cancer. Examining Neighborhood, Maternal, and Cultural Influences on Mexican-origin Adolescent Mothers' Educational Outcomes

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: Mexican-origin adolescent females have the highest birthrate of all other ethnic groups in the U.S. Further, teen mothers are at significant risk for poor outcomes, including low educational attainment. Therefore, examining predictors of Mexican-origin teen mothers' educational attainment was the main goal of the current study. Future-oriented beliefs such as educational aspirations and expectations are suggested to have positive implications for adolescents' educational attainment in general. Therefore, guided by bioecological, social capital, status attainment, social learning, and collective socialization of neighborhood theories, the current study examined neighborhood, maternal, and cultural predictors of 190 Mexican-origin parenting adolescents' educational aspirations, expectations, and attainment. With respect to maternal predictors, the study examined mother figures' (i.e., grandmothers') educational attainment, and aspirations and expectations for the adolescent as predictors of adolescents' educational attainment. Using a multi-informant, longitudinal analytic model, results suggest that adolescents' educational expectations, rather than aspirations, significantly predicted adolescents' attainment one year later. Additionally, grandmothers' educational attainment was indirectly associated with adolescents' educational attainment via the educational expectations of both the grandmother and the adolescent. Further, the neighborhood context indirectly informed adolescents' educational attainment via both grandmothers and adolescents' educational expectations. Finally, adolescents' ethnic identity affirmation was significantly associated with adolescents' educational attainment two years later. Implications regarding the importance of educational expectations and ethnic identity affirmation for at-risk parenting adolescents' educational attainment will be discussed. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Ana Carolina Gomes Martins de Oliveira 22 February 2016 (has links)
A avaliação da qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde é primordial para o manejo de crianças e adolescentes com HIV, e o instrumento \"Viver com HIV\" poderá se constituir em uma ferramenta válida e confiável para mensuração da qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde de crianças e adolescentes que vivem com HIV, podendo melhorar a qualidade da assistência em saúde e o acompanhamento dessa população / Children and adolescents with HIV/AIDS require a comprehensive and unique approach because characteristics such as disclosure, stigma generated by the disease, frequent doctor visits, daily use of medications and their side effects are aspects that need to be assessed when it comes to health related to quality of life - HRQOL. The inclusion of assessment of quality of life related to health of this population, with viable and standardized instruments, can identify parameters for a comprehensive care and according to the individual needs. This study aimed to validate the specific module of the instrument DISABKIDS® for measuring the Quality of Life Related to Health of Brazilian Children and Adolescents with HIV, called \" Living with HIV \" .This is a methodological study, the type of instrument validation, for which we use the methodological adaptation described by the European project DISABKIDS®. Participated in the face validation and content 15 experts with diverse background in health care, which were invited to examine the importance of the selected items and the adjustment for age and population, classifying them according to relevance, clarity and applicability of its contents to the study population. Como você está diferente, vovó! Aspectos sócio-históricos dos contos populares / How you look different, grandma! Socio-historical aspects of popular tales

Nárgyla Maria Lourenção Pimenta Pinheiro 17 August 2012 (has links)
It is of general knowledge that the fairy tales transmit important messages filled with ideology that, sometimes, differ significantly from one another. This happens due to the time or place where the production is contextualized, as it is possible to be seen in the variation of the Little Red Riding Hood tale, those from the medieval oral tradition, to those adapted by Perrault or brothers Grimm, and even the contemporary versions. Tracing a historic profile of the changes in the fairy tales of popular origin starting in France, passing through Germany, Portugal and culminating in Brazil the present study aims to verify the transformations that happened in these societies, showing how they were represented in the tales and what messages they pass on. For the present study, Literary Comparatism and elements of Literary Theory will be used through a sociological and historical look. After the definition of a theoretical-methodological picture and a conceptual basis, we will move on to a brief analysis of the different societies and how their social practice can, in a certain way, be represented in the fairy tales.

To translate and culturally adapt to Brazilian Portuguese the educational material "Your Pelvic Floor", created in English, to disseminate the knowledge amongst adolescents about the pelvic floor and compare the knowledge of a group of teenagers on this topic before and after reading this material already translated and adapted. Methods: The research was divided into three moments. First it was performed the cultural adaptation of educational material "Your Pelvic Floor" into Brazilian Portuguese. Secondly, the researchers created a questionnaire with five multiple choice questions based on the topics discussed in the educational material, subsequently validated by an expert committee. At last, educational sessions were performed in three steps: pretest, reading material translated and posttest. At the pretest, adolescents answered the questionnaire, to register their previous knowledge about pelvic floor. After this stage, the material "Your Pelvic Floor" was read in group. At the end of each session, the posttest was answered, its content was the same as the one used in the pretest. Results: The process of cultural adaptation was developed in five steps, according to the methodological recommendations of international literature: translation, translation's synthesis, back-translation, review by the expert committee and pretesting. The first three steps were performed satisfactorily. The members of the expert committee made some changes to ensure the equivalence between the original and translated versions. In the pretest, translated material was read by 32 teenagers between 10 and 18 years old. They were divided in four focal groups according to the age. Some changes were suggested to improve their understanding, which were accepted and approved by the committee. The final version was entitled "Seu Assoalho Pélvico". Based on the final version of the educational material, educational sessions were developed with 16 adolescents, aged between 11 and 18, who answered the questionnaire about the topic before and after reading in group the brochure "Seu Assoalho Pélvico". After reading the material, the number of correct answers was significantly (p < 0.05) greater than before reading. Health Literacy Assessment of Fifth and Sixth Grade Students at Two Schools in Tucson, Arizona Using the REALM-Teen: A Descriptive Study

Barkow, Brian, Helmrich, Chelby, Spencer, Jenene January 2014 (has links)
Class of 2014 Abstract / Specific Aims: Fifth and 6th grade students at two schools in Tucson, Arizona were assessed using the Rapid Estimate of Adolescent Literacy in Medicine (REALM-Teen) to increase awareness of the need of childhood health literacy. Methods: After receiving permission from the two schools, the parents and the students, assessment by the REALM-Teen determined if the children were at, above, or below grade level. Main Results: Ninety-eight students were assessed of 183 possible (53.6%). Eighty-four were at or above grade level (85.7%), 14 were below (14.3%). Fifty-seven 5th graders were assessed of 90 (63.3%); of the 46 (of 72) in public school, 40 were at or above grade level (86.9%) and 6 were below (13.1%); of the 11 (of 18) in private school,9 were at or above grade level (81.8%) and 2 were below (18.2%). Forty-one 6th graders were assessed of 93 (44.1%); of the 34 (of 84) in public school, 28 were at or above grade level (82.4%) and 6 were below (17.6%); of the 7 (of 9) in private school 7 were at or above grade level (100%). Chi-square analyses showed no statistical significance between health literacy outcomes and gender, school type or prior health knowledge. Conclusion: Most (85.7%) students assessed were at grade level or higher for health literacy, which supports standards being taught and reached. That 14 students fell below grade level at the time of assessment as well as the high percentage of students not assessed (46.4%) emphasizes need for more health education and assessment.

Sexual health promotion programming for youth in or at-risk for foster care: Improving knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors.

Boustani, Maya 02 May 2016 (has links)
Among girls in foster care, 48% become pregnant at least once by age 19 (Dworkey & Courtney, 2010). Teen moms are less likely to graduate from high school and their children also are more likely to be placed in foster care due to abuse or neglect (Hoffman, 2006). Furthermore, 50% of 21-year-old men aging out of foster care report they have gotten someone pregnant, compared to 19% of their peers not involved in foster care (Courtney et al., 2007). Youth in or at-risk for foster care (YFC) report limited knowledge about, access to, and use of condoms; ambivalent attitudes toward teen parenting; and participation in other risky behaviors. For the current study, we adapted and supplemented an evidence-based sexual health program called SiHLE, using a systematic adaptation framework (ADAPT-ITT, Wingood & DiClemete, 2008), to address these unique and targeted needs of YFC. Thirty-six youth participated in four sessions of SiHLE-YFC during their stay at a temporary shelter. Four 90-minute sessions focused on increasing sexual health knowledge, improving attitudes toward and self-efficacy of condom use, and developing core skills such as problem-solving and communication. As hypothesized, youth showed high satisfaction with the intervention and significant improvement in sexual health knowledge from pre to post. At one month follow-up, youth continued to show significant improvement in sexual health knowledge, along with a significant reduction in risky sexual behaviors. Though not significant, there were moderate effect sizes for changes in attitudes toward teen pregnancy and condoms. There were no changes in attitudes towards teen parenting. Taken together, findings suggest that sexual health education directly targeting the unique needs of YFC may improve sexual health knowledge and behavior, and are discussed in the context of challenges associated with intervention and research with this population.

The Effect of Cognitive Development and Premarital Sexual Permissiveness on Adolescent Pregnancy

Powers, Pamela Kay 12 1900 (has links)
A literature review revealed 15 variables as commonly studied as associated with adolescent pregnancy. The research showed conflicting results in many of these areas. Twenty-one pregnant and 20 non-pregnant adolescents were tested using the Arlin Test of Formal Reasoning (ATFR) and the Reiss's Premarital Sexual Permissiveness Scale. Pregnant participants were expected to score lower than non-pregnant participants on the ATFR; and, the low permissives (based on responses to the Reiss's Premarital Sexual Permissiveness Scale) were expected to score higher than high permissives on the ATFR. However, the results did not support the hypotheses. Several areas were examined for exploratory purposes. There was a significant difference between high permissives and low permissives for parent/peer orientation for sexual behavior attitudes. Additional exploratory demographic information was collected using a General Information Questionnaire.
