[pt] Esta tese tem por objetivo apresentar, analisar e defender uma solução inferencialista para o assim chamado problema de seguir uma regra. O primeiro capítulo serve como uma introdução. No segundo capítulo, traço as linhas gerais que balizam a discussão ao longo do resto do trabalho: introduzo a ideia de uma teoria do significado e os seus elementos e mostro que ela pode ser uma base sistemática para discussões metafísicas e epistemológicas – com destaque para os temas do realismo e do representacionismo. No terceiro capítulo, abordo em detalhes o problema de seguir uma regra – apresentando uma reconstrução do argumento do Wittgenstein de Kripke (baseando-me em Hattigandi) que conduz à conclusão cética- bem como analiso a viabilidade das possíveis linhas de resposta. No quarto capítulo, apresento o maquinário teórico-conceitual do inferencialismo (baseando-me sobretudo na obra de Brandom); esboço a estrutura geral de uma teoria semântica inferencialista combinando o inferencialismo com duas outras ideias: o normativismo pragmático e o expressivismo lógico. Por fim, no quinto capítulo, enfrento o problema cético de seguir uma regra a partir da perspectiva apresentada no capítulo anterior, e utilizando os elementos introduzido nos outros três capítulos. / [en] In this dissertation I aim to present, analyze, and defend an inferentialist solution to the so-called rule-following problem. The first chapter works as an introduction. The second chapter sets the stage for the discussion throughout the dissertation. After introducing the very idea of a theory of meaning, I show that it can serve as a systematic basis for metaphysical and epistemological discussions – wherein the themes of realism and representationalism take center stage. In the third chapter, I tackle the rule-following problem. More precisely, drawing on Hattiangadi s seminal interpretation, I offer a reconstruction of Kripkenstein s argument leading to the skeptical solution. I also assess the plausibility of the main lines of response to the problem. In the fourth chapter, I introduce the inferentialist theoretical-conceptual machinery inspired by Brandom, drawing the general framework for an inferentialist semantic theory that combines semantic inferentialism with pragmatic normativism and logical expressivism. The final chapter tackles the rule-following problem from the perspective set out in the previous chapter, using at the same time elements brought into play in the other three chapters.

It has compelling philosophical motivations which are rooted deeply in the philosophy of language and the philosophy of mathematics. We investigate this new approach of logical semantics and its perspective on logical validity in the light of its own philosophical aspirations, especially as represented by the work of Dummett (1991). Among our findings, we single out the validity of Peirce’s rule with respect to a justification procedure based on the introduction rules for the propositional logical constants. This is an undesirable outcome since Peirce’s rule is not considered to be constructively acceptable. On the other hand, we also establish the invalidity of the same inference rule with respect to a justification procedure based on the elimination rules for the propositional logical constants. We comment on the implications of this scenario to Dummett’s philosophical programme and to proof-theoretic semantics in general. / As semânticas construtivas oferecem uma nova abordagem semântica para as constantes lógicas. Essas semânticas gozam de fortes motivações filosóficas advindas da filosofia da linguagem e da filosofia da matemática. Nós investigamos essa nova abordagem semântica da lógica e sua concepção de validade lógica sob a luz de suas próprias aspirações filosóficas, em especial aquelas representadas pelo trabalho de Dummett (1991). Dentre nossos resultados, destacamos a validade da Regra de Peirce em relação ao procedimento justificatório baseado nas regras de introdução para as constantes lógicas proposicionais. Essa é uma situação indesejável, pois a Regra de Peirce não é considerada aceitável de um ponto de vista construtivo. Por outro lado, verificamos que o procedimento justificatório baseado nas regras de eliminação atesta a invalidade dessa mesma regra. Tecemos alguns comentários a respeito das consequências desse cenário para o projeto filosófico de Dummett e para as semânticas construtivas em geral.

Essa tese, que estabelece que uma explicação filosófica do pensamento – entendido como aquilo que pode ser verdadeiro ou falso – apenas pode ser obtida por meio da análise da linguagem, é formulada e defendida à luz do que Michael Dummett chamou de teoria do significado. Em seguida, duas reações contrárias à tese da prioridade analítica são consideradas. O núcleo da primeira crítica, capitaneada por John McDowell, é a alegada impossibilidade de uma explicação da linguagem que não se ancore em uma explicação dos pensamentos. Diante disso, McDowell defende uma revisão de nossas pretensões explicativas no que diz respeito à linguagem e ao pensamento. A segunda crítica à tese da prioridade analítica da linguagem sobre o pensamento é formulada a partir da filosofia madura de Gareth Evans. Nesse caso, a crítica não é dirigida à ambição explicativa, e sim a ordem pretendida da explicação. Em vez de explicarmos os pensamentos por meio de uma elucidação do significado das expressões, ele propõe que uma explicação do significado das expressões se dê em termos de uma teoria dos pensamentos concebida de forma independente de uma análise dos significados das expressões. Por fim, o presente trabalho conclui que as críticas consideradas não são bem-sucedidas, e que a posição de Dummett merece ser considerada mais seriamente dentro do debate atual sobre metodologia filosófica. / The present work presents a discussion about the thesis of the priority of language over thought in the order of explanation. This thesis, which establishes that a philosophical explanation of thought, understood as that which can be true or false, can only be obtained through the analysis of language, is formulated and defended in the light of what Michael Dummett called the theory of meaning. Then, two reactions contrary to the thesis of the priority are considered. The core of the first criticism, commanded by John McDowell, is the alleged impossibility of an explanation of language that is not based on an explanation of the thoughts. In view of this, he advocates a revision of our explanatory pretensions in regard to language and thought. The second criticism of the thesis of the priority of language over thought is formulated from the mature philosophy of Gareth Evans. In this case, criticism is not directed at explanatory ambition, but at the intended order of explanation. Instead of explaining thoughts by means of an elucidation of the meaning of expressions, he proposes that an explanation of the meaning of expressions be given in terms of a theory of thoughts conceived independently of an analysis of the meanings of expressions. Finally, the present work concludes that the criticisms analyzed are not successful, and that Dummett's position deserves to be considered more seriously in the current debate on philosophical methodology.
