The purpose of this study is to discuss the appropriateness of a cognitive approach to Donald Davidson&#039 / s meaning theory. Davidson makes the bold proposal that a truth theory, modified for a natural language, may be treated as a meaning theory for that language. According to Davidson, a meaning theory is an empirical theory. Radical Interpretation is at the center of such an empirical inquiry which places restrictions on the truth theory to make it suitable as a meaning theory without appeal to semantic notions. Davidson&lsquo / s aim in presenting this bold proposal and radical interpretation is to shed light on the concept of meaning, not to define the actual semantic competence of language users. But what Davidson&lsquo / s project does not aim to define is the main thing that a cognitive approach must account for. Whether a truth theory can represent the semantic competence of language users is discussed in this work. It is concluded that, although there is no a priori reason for such a representation claim, the cognitive approach&mdash / with the right assumptions to make the claim testable&mdash / can lead to an empirical research programme.

It has compelling philosophical motivations which are rooted deeply in the philosophy of language and the philosophy of mathematics. We investigate this new approach of logical semantics and its perspective on logical validity in the light of its own philosophical aspirations, especially as represented by the work of Dummett (1991). Among our findings, we single out the validity of Peirce’s rule with respect to a justification procedure based on the introduction rules for the propositional logical constants. This is an undesirable outcome since Peirce’s rule is not considered to be constructively acceptable. On the other hand, we also establish the invalidity of the same inference rule with respect to a justification procedure based on the elimination rules for the propositional logical constants. We comment on the implications of this scenario to Dummett’s philosophical programme and to proof-theoretic semantics in general. / As semânticas construtivas oferecem uma nova abordagem semântica para as constantes lógicas. Essas semânticas gozam de fortes motivações filosóficas advindas da filosofia da linguagem e da filosofia da matemática. Nós investigamos essa nova abordagem semântica da lógica e sua concepção de validade lógica sob a luz de suas próprias aspirações filosóficas, em especial aquelas representadas pelo trabalho de Dummett (1991). Dentre nossos resultados, destacamos a validade da Regra de Peirce em relação ao procedimento justificatório baseado nas regras de introdução para as constantes lógicas proposicionais. Essa é uma situação indesejável, pois a Regra de Peirce não é considerada aceitável de um ponto de vista construtivo. Por outro lado, verificamos que o procedimento justificatório baseado nas regras de eliminação atesta a invalidade dessa mesma regra. Tecemos alguns comentários a respeito das consequências desse cenário para o projeto filosófico de Dummett e para as semânticas construtivas em geral.

Essa tese, que estabelece que uma explicação filosófica do pensamento – entendido como aquilo que pode ser verdadeiro ou falso – apenas pode ser obtida por meio da análise da linguagem, é formulada e defendida à luz do que Michael Dummett chamou de teoria do significado. Em seguida, duas reações contrárias à tese da prioridade analítica são consideradas. O núcleo da primeira crítica, capitaneada por John McDowell, é a alegada impossibilidade de uma explicação da linguagem que não se ancore em uma explicação dos pensamentos. Diante disso, McDowell defende uma revisão de nossas pretensões explicativas no que diz respeito à linguagem e ao pensamento. A segunda crítica à tese da prioridade analítica da linguagem sobre o pensamento é formulada a partir da filosofia madura de Gareth Evans. Nesse caso, a crítica não é dirigida à ambição explicativa, e sim a ordem pretendida da explicação. Em vez de explicarmos os pensamentos por meio de uma elucidação do significado das expressões, ele propõe que uma explicação do significado das expressões se dê em termos de uma teoria dos pensamentos concebida de forma independente de uma análise dos significados das expressões. In this case, criticism is not directed at explanatory ambition, but at the intended order of explanation. Instead of explaining thoughts by means of an elucidation of the meaning of expressions, he proposes that an explanation of the meaning of expressions be given in terms of a theory of thoughts conceived independently of an analysis of the meanings of expressions. The general topic of the thesis is the history of the Ordinary Language Philosophy. To be more precise, it deals with the critical arguments, which were raised against is. The thesis offers a short historical and sociological review of the Ordinary Language Philosophy. Critical analysis shows two things: 1) the main reason for the rejection was a different understanding of meaning (and consequences of such a understanding); 2) critics begged the question and already assumed the justification of these rejections in their arguments. The area of this criticism was: the paradigm case argument, the empirical nature of the statements of meaning produced by the Ordinary Language Philosophy, the structural elements of meaning and the political implications of the theory of meaning. The thesis criticizes the Ordinary Language Philosophy in those parts (and in such interpretations), where its understanding of meaning does not differ from the understanding of the critics and where they share common assumptions. On the other hand, the thesis argues for an interpretation, which avoids classical understanding of meaning in all its consequences. Finally, the thesis asks how the Ordinary Language Philosophy can be useful for contemporary debates.
