Reckermann, Lukas January 2018 (has links)
To master English to such a degree that you can read a wide variety of English texts without having to look certain words up in a dictionary requires a huge vocabulary. Estimates are that you will need to understand 8000 – 9000 word families to reach that goal. The aim of this study was to investigate what opportunities for reaching such a goal there are to be found in the explicit vocabulary instructions found in two textbooks written for Swedish upper-secondary school. Another point of study was how these textbook instructions are related to research in fields relevant to L2 vocabulary acquisition. It was found that there is a good variety in textbook instructions concerning issues such as semantic groups, formulaic sequences and word formation. However, there are big differences between the two textbooks that were studied regarding this. Furthermore, it was found that both textbooks, although having different approaches to teaching vocabulary, rest their reasoning upon research.

The analysis is performed based on functionalist assumptions and under the guidelines of official documents of the Brazilian Education (PCN: Secondary School, Curriculum Proposal for the EJA EF-2nd segment, PNLD-EJA). It uses the distinction proposed by Halliday, McIntosh and Strevens (1974) between the three types of education or language approach, namely, descriptive, prescriptive and productive approach. It also considers reflections guided by theoretical assumptions of linguistic Functionalism and Text Linguistics on grammar teaching which are present in Neves (2011, 2013), Antunes (2003, 2007, 2014), Nogueira (2010) and Travaglia ( 2001), and the meaning of the practice of linguistic analysis based on authors such as Geraldi (1997) and Bezerra and Reinaldo (2014). The corpus of analysis of this study consisted of questions of the Portuguese book that bring together two essential characteristics: address a linguistic aspect and using a literary text. After a quantitative and qualitative analysis, it was found that in the questions of linguistic analysis in the context of literary texts, there is a predominance of descriptive approach manifested by an emphasis on identification exercises and classification of language units (grammatical nomenclature) with consequent lack of coordination between linguistic phenomena and specifically literary texts, which features a conservative trend (Traditional) in the study of mother tongue. Along the qualitative analysis of the book activities, we suggest possible approaches that articulate language resources used in literary texts and the construction of the senses and effects.

This work has set as a goal to analize how the issue of cytology is approached on textbooks of biology, provided by the Book's National Program for the High School 2009 (PNLEM 2009). For this, it was prepared a guide with general and specific aspects. The general aspects were related to the basic structure of the book, such as the presence of images, tables, comparative tables and supplementary readings. On the other hand, the specific aspects are related to the content, which issues were suggested as supplementary readings, the approach of the issue and also the analysis of the concepts discussed. The reason to choose this theme is due to the same is also widely used by education professionals, from the public or private schools, and also by students, as a reference. Besides, this feature is provided free to teachers and students of public schools, since their schools are properly registered to receive them. With this work, it was noticed that in some books the images used are not mentioned in the text's body, there are supplementary readings in all books analyzed and trial suggestions. However, it was also noticed some misconceptions and found the use of many technical terms that, even though from this area of knowledge, sometimes these terms were not explained on the books.

The chemistry textbook as curriculum speech : recontextualizations in the field of education policy

Oliveira, Ana Carolina Garcia de 26 August 2018 (has links)
In this research, I seek to understand inherent tensions in public political applied to Chemistry textbook, conducted in the context of the National Textbook Program (PNLD), under the Ministry of Education. Inspired by the political cycle proposed by Stephen Ball, I have as main objective to investigate the processes of elaboration and evaluation of textbooks performed in PNLD and the influence of academic community of Chemistry Teaching in that process. Understanding curriculum policy as discursive networks that are established in contexts marked by permeabilities, the empirical framework of the research consisted from two fields: 1. The interviews collected as narratives of evaluators that participated in the process and authors of textbooks and, 2. The analysis of a series of papers published in journals and conferences of Chemistry/Science Teaching and its possible influences in the textbooks in the period between PNLEM 2007 and PNLD 2012. From the interviews, monads (Benjamin, 1994) were developed, enhancing dialogue between the evaluation of Chemistry textbook and the influence of the academic community in this process. From the analysis of monads, it was possible to see elements of tension in the speech of evaluators teachers and authors, among them is highlighted the allusion to the school chemical knowledge and to reference chemical knowledge, being the latter considered as an attempt to legitimize the position of evaluators and authors of the books. Apart from the academic community, other institutions produced effects leaving marks in the drafting and revision of the textbook, such as the Ministry of Education, editorial groups and schools. Thus, the textbook can be considered as a hybrid resulting from recontextualized discourses arising from these and other contexts. Thereby, authorship policies becomes plural, many subjects and instances participate and build it / Doutorado / Ensino e Práticas Culturais / Doutora em Educação

An estudy about the concept of literature in high school textbooks (between the years 1970 and 1990).

Carolina Yokota de Paula Lima 19 March 2008 (has links)
This dissertation aims at discussing the concept of literature that can be found in High School textbooks produced between the years 1970 and 1990. The main trait of this research is to analyze the chapters that try to define what literature is. This work - not assuming the existence of a rigid, natural and fixed concept of literature, as if this notion could exist apart from any discourse and from any historical contingence - assumes that this concept would be a discoursive construction in which others discourses are retaken, simplified, agglutinated, generalized, etc. Therein, the theoretical perspective of the analysis of the discourse, specially the one that derives from the work of Michel Foucault ( The Discourse on Language and The Archaelogy of Knowledge ) will lay the foundation of the present analysis.

Funkce a využití učebnic pro výuku informaticky zaměřených předmětů vzdělávací oblasti ICT na středních odborných školách v ČR / Function and using textbooks for Informatics and ICT subjects in secondary vocational schools in the Czech Republic

Soucha, Filip January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to ascertain if the secondary vocational school students and teachers use printed textbooks in their ICT lessons, how they use them alternatively, what are their reasons not to use them. Lastly, if there is any notion about the ideal textbook for ICT classes. The theoretical part deals with the textbook concept and also discusses the contemporary status of printed textbooks. The research presents the results of quantitative survey performed among the pupils n=188 of a particular secondary vocational school and the teachers of various secondary vocational schools. The research was carried out via the questionnaires - the one for learners consisted of 15 items, the other for teachers consisted of 16 items. We found out that the textbooks are neither required nor needed by students and teachers alike however, some teachers utilize them as a support for the planning of their own teaching process. Nevertheless, they would appreciate the set of several textbook focused on specific fields. On the contrary, the students do not even have any suggestion of the ideal textbook concept, they are likely to be overwhelmed by the modern technologies. Evaluating the Integration of Online, Interactive Tutorials into a Data Structures and Algorithms Course

Breakiron, Daniel Aubrey 28 May 2013 (has links)
OpenDSA is a collection of open source tutorials for teaching data structures and algorithms. It was created with the goals of visualizing complex, abstract topics; increasing the amount of practice material available to students; and providing immediate feedback and incremental assessment. In this thesis, I first describe aspects of the OpenDSA architecture relevant to collecting user interaction data. I then present an analysis of the interaction log data gathered from three classes during Spring 2013. The analysis focuses on determining the time distribution of student activity, determining the time required for assignment completion, and exploring \credit-seeking" behaviors and behavior related to non-required exercises. We identified clusters of students based on when they completed exercises, verified the reliability of estimated time requirements for exercises, provided evidence that a majority of students do not read the text, discovered a measurement that could be used to identify exercises that require additional development, and found evidence that students complete exercises after obtaining credit. Furthermore, we determined that slideshow usage was fairly high (even when credit was not ordered), and skipping to the end of slideshows was more common when credit was offered but also occurred when it was not. / Master of Science
