Poetic Properties: Legal Forms and Literary Documents in Early English Literature

This thesis argues that the Middle English alliterative prosody of the Piers Plowman tradition was influenced by a discourse combining law, history, homily and poetry which was inherited from the administrative practices of the Anglo-Saxon period. As literary and legal textual genres developed recognizably distinct formal characteristics in the later Middle Ages, the combination of homiletic rhetoric and alliterative sound-patterning evoked a surviving discourse in which the formal characteristics of poems and documents were less clearly distinguished. Thus insofar as it evoked Anglo-Saxon textual culture, Piers Plowman provided a formal model which was particularly suitable to criticisms of political institutions that consolidated their power by developing new distinctions between the genres of bureaucratic texts. In each of the texts and traditions studied – Wulfstan’s homiletic law code I–II Cnut and its Latin translations, The First Worcester Fragment, Laȝamon’s Arthurian Brut chronicle-poem, The South English Legendary "Life of St. Egwine", and the Piers Plowman tradition poem Mum and the Sothsegger – apparently “literary” devices are used to authorize historically-based “legal” claims, particularly on behalf of ecclesiastical institutions looking to maintain their local influence in the face of increasingly consolidated royal administrative authority. Though oaths played a much less important procedural role after the Norman Conquest than they did in the Anglo-Saxon period, the appearance of "creative" authenticating procedures in "commemorative" texts created the appearance of orality to post-Conquest readers, to criticize a government which claimed its English "common" law to originate in the remotest recorded antiquity, even as it abandoned the practices actually recorded in the earliest surviving law codes and documents to be written in England. Comparing these texts allows a deeper understanding of their shared authenticating strategies, and also a re-appraisal of the methods we use to describe the relationships between medieval documents and authors, literature and law, texts and contexts. Appended to the dissertation is an edition of the SEL "Life of St. Egwine." Because Egwine's hagiographic tradition is so thematically invested in political concerns and closely interconnected with legal documents attributed to Egwine himself, the edition provides an opportunity to take a "disjunctively" literary and diplomatic approach to the tradition, in the process exploring some of the practical implications of the larger theoretical issues raised by the thesis as a whole.

Esta tesis se propone investigar sobre el carácter y la idiosincrasia de los textos antiguos de Ester a partir de un análisis exhaustivo de las variantes textuales. La pregunta que se nos plantea es: ¿por qué existen estas diferencias? Tenemos la convicción de que los textos son el resultado de las lecturas que las diversas comunidades de lectores han realizado del libro bíblico en circunstancias que responden a su historia religiosa particular. Las páginas que siguen intentaran dar respuesta la pregunta planteada.

En los manuscritos 7901 y 7902 de la Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid se nos han conservado unos "Fragmenta ueterum scriptorum Latinorum", recopilados por el humanista español Antonio Agustín (1517-1586. Tras los fragmentos de algunos poetas latinos se nos han transmitido algunos comentarios métricos y textuales, elaborados por el humanista italiano Gabriele Faerno (1510-1561). El objetivo de nuestro trabajo es analizar las aportaciones de estos humanistas a la Crítica Textual de los fragmentos de Lucilio. / In the manuscripts 7901 and 702 from the Biblioteca Nacional of Madrid we find a collection of "Fragmenta ueterum scriptorum Latinorum" gathered by the Spanish humanist Antonio Agustín (1517-1586). After the fragments of some poets there are some metrical and textual notes to the fragments, written by the Italian humanist Gabriele Faerno (1510-1561). The aim of our work is to analyze the contributions of these scholars to the textual criticism of Lucilius' fragments.

Esta tese indica as fontes textuais de Memória Histórica da Capitania de São Paulo e analisa os procedimentos de modificação textual operados por Manuel Cardoso de Abreu na adaptação dessas fontes para a elaboração de sua obra. A Memória Histórica, de Manuel Cardoso de Abreu, oficial maior da Secretaria da Capitania de São Paulo, é um manuscrito do século XVIII preservado no Arquivo do Estado de São Paulo, composto principalmente a partir de textos dos historiadores setecentistas Pedro Taques de Almeida Paes Leme História da Capitania de São Vicente; Notícia Histórica da Expulsão dos Jesuítas do Colégio de São Paulo e Nobiliarquia Paulistana Histórica e Genealógica e Frei Gaspar da Madre de Deus Memórias para a História da Capitania de São Vicente. Apesar da comprovação da reprodução integral de muitos trechos e parágrafos de tais obras, o manuscrito não se configura como uma cópia literal de suas fontes, uma vez que Manuel Cardoso interveio intencionalmente nos textos que lhe serviram de modelo para a construção de sua Memória, operando, para tanto, uma série de alterações, que deram origem a um novo texto. No início do século XX, depois da aquisição dessa obra pelo Arquivo do Estado, historiadores como Capistrano de Abreu e, especialmente, Afonso dEscragnolle Taunay, levantaram a questão da sua autenticidade, amparados nas noções de autoria e propriedade intelectual. Assim, a Memória Histórica foi julgada como um caso de plágio, sem que, contudo, houvesse uma discussão em torno da motivação e finalidade dessa apropriação textual, da relação desse texto com os seus textos-fonte e das práticas de escrita e de cópia à época. Este trabalho, que se fundamenta nos princípios teóricos e metodológicos da Crítica de Fontes, da Filologia e da Crítica Textual, parte da pesquisa, exame e colação das fontes da Memória Histórica, com o objetivo de estabelecer a categorização dos mecanismos de filtragem de tais fontes. Desse modo, objetiva-se identificar quais as modificações, voluntárias e involuntárias, operadas por Manuel Cardoso de Abreu no processo de elaboração de sua obra. / This work through the establishment of the sources used on the paper titled Memória Histórica da Capitania de São Paulo, seeks to analyze the textual transformation in the passage from one text to another. The Memória Histórica, of Manuel Cardoso de Abreu, higher official of the Secretariat of the Province of São Paulo, is an eighteenth century manuscript deposited in the Archive of the State of São Paulo, composed mainly of texts of the eighteenth century texts written by historians, as Pedro Taques de Almeida Paes Leme Leme História da Capitania de São Vicente; Notícia Histórica da Expulsão dos Jesuítas do Colégio de São Paulo e Nobiliarquia Paulistana Histórica e Genealógica and Frei Gaspar da Madre de Deus Memórias para a História da Capitania de São Vicente. Despite the confirmation of the full reproduction of many sections and paragraphs of such works, the manuscript is not configured as a literal copy of his sources, since Manuel Cardoso intentionally intervened in the texts which served as a model for the construction of his Memória, implementing to this end, a series of changes that gave rise to a new text. In the early twentieth century, after the acquisition of this works by the State Archives, historians as Capistrano de Abreu and, especially, Afonso dEscragnolle Taunay, raised the question of its authenticity, supported by the notions of authorship and intellectual property. As a consequence, Memória Histórica was judged as a case of plagiarism, without, however, a discussion on the motivation and purpose of textual appropriation, the relationship of that text with their sources and without consideration for writing and copying practices during the period when they were constructed, being held. So, based essentially on theoretical and methodological principles, such as Critical Sources, Philology and Textual Criticism, this research focuses on the examination and collation of the sources from Memória Histórica, and it searches to establish the categorization of filtering mechanisms for these sources, so that it is possible to reveal which variants of Manuel Cardoso de Abreu in the writing process of his work and to what extent was his was intentional intervention.

Notre recherche a comme sujet la comparaison du texte de la Septante avec le texte massorétique du livre de Naoum. La recherche se divise en quatre parties. La première analyse et décrit le mode de traduction et expose, pour la Vorlage hébraïque les conclusions qui en découlent. La deuxième partie offre la reconstruction de la Vorlage du livre entier. La troisième et la quatrième partie se limitent à trois versets sélectionnés et les examinent du point de vue de la critique textuelle et de la critique littéraire. En définitive, cette recherche donne des éclaircissements sur l’histoire du texte de Naoum, sur l’histoire de sa transmission ainsi que celle de sa réception et (re)lecture à l’époque hellénistique. Partant, les résultats contribuent à la reconstitution de l’histoire des écrits prophétiques de la Bible hébraïque. / The present examination is about the comparison of the translation of the Septuagint with the Masoretic text of the book of Nahum. The investigation consists of four parts. The first focuses on the translation technique and the conclusions to be drawn with respect to the Hebrew Vorlage. The second offers a reconstruction of the Vorlage of the Septuagint of the whole book of Nahum. The third and the fourth parts are dealing with three selected verses, discussing them with regard to text-critical and literary-critical questions. This study not only gives new insights into the history of the textof the book of Nahum and it’s transmission, but also into the reception and (re)lecture of the text in the Hellenistic period. The results contribute to the reconstruction of the history of Hebrew prophetical literature.

Cette étude est consacrée aux traductions de psaumes que Paul Claudel compose entre 1918 et 1953. Une édition critique et scientifique met en lumière les aspects génétiques et éditoriaux de cette entreprise peu connue. Elle est le fondement nécessaire à l'étude interne qui, s'appuyant sur une confrontation systématique avec le texte de la Vulgate qui sert de base à la traduction claudélienne, met au jour le fonctionnement à la fois poétique et herméneutique de ces textes. La traduction claudélienne des psaumes se situe en effet à la frontière de divers genres (traduction biblique, traduction poétique, commentaire exégétique, méditation spirituelle, poésie) et l'étude de cette imbrication permet d'apporter un éclairage nouveau sur les rapports que Claudel tisse avec l'univers de la Bible. Loin de former un corpus unifié et homogène, ces textes montrent au contraire une évolution du mode de traduction, vers une disjonction du texte claudélien avec la lettre biblique. L'hypothèse soutenue est que cette déhiscence est à mettre au crédit d'une réflexion sur le statut à la fois herméneutique et poétique de la figure, qui permet de faire se rejoindre l'exégèse figurative patristique et médiévale, dont Claudel hérite par le biais de la liturgie, et le régime figural propre à la littérature. Les Psaumes, à la fois texte poétique par excellence et voix privilégiée de la prière chrétienne, seraient ainsi le lieu où réaliser l'alliance du littéraire et du spirituel. / This thesis concentrates on Paul Claudel's translations of the Psalms, composed between 1918 and 1953. A critical and scientific approach reveals the historical and literary aspects of this little known project. Such an analysis is the necessary basis for a profound study that reveals both the poetical and hermeneutical process of these texts through a systematic comparison with the Latin text of the Vulgate, on which Claudel's translation relies. The Claudelian translation of the Psalms truly stands at the intersection of various genres – biblical translation, poetical translation, exegetical commentary, spiritual meditation, poetry – and studying these interlinking elements helps shed new light on Claudel's relationships with the Bible and its influence. Far from producing a united and homogenous corpus, these texts demonstrate an evolution in the way the process of translation yields a disjunction between the Claudelian text and the biblical one. My hypothesis is that this separation results from Claudel's analysis of both the hermeneutical and poetical status of the figure, that enables the linking of the patristic and medieval figurative exegesis – which he inherits through the liturgy – with the figural regime proper to literature. As both poetical texts par excellence and the privileged expression of Christian prayer, the Psalms are thus the juncture where literature and spirituality coincide.

The textual tradition of explicit quotations in Codex Bezac cantabrigienesis of the acts of the apostles

This dissertation examines to what extent the transmission history of Codex Bezae’s Greek text of Acts shows awareness of the explicit quotations’ Old Testament origin, and to what extent this awareness played a role in the final formation of this manuscript’s text. The dissertation limits itself to explicit quotations from the Psalms, Isaiah and the Minor Prophets. Each explicit Old Testament quotation of these three books is discussed in the order of their appearance in Codex Bezae. In these discussions, special attention is paid to the layout of the text of the manuscript, the introductory formula of each explicit quotation and the text of each quotation as it appears in the codex. The aim of this discussion is to discern whether the variant readings and layout of the manuscript (i.e., variant as opposed to other Greek New Testament manuscripts) show Old Testament awareness or possible influence from the OT as opposed to the “initial” text of the New Testament. The variant readings of Codex Bezae are therefore measured against the pertinent Old Testament traditions (Hebrew, Greek and Latin). The aim of this investigation is to determine whether Old Testament awareness played any role in the formation of the text of Codex Bezae, not necessarily to solve textual difficulties in the given explicit quotations. By paying close attention to the awareness of the Old Testament in the Bezan tradition, an opportunity is afforded to glimpse into the stages of the transmission history of this text, to learn more about its users and the users of the text of previous manuscripts in its tradition, and to discover more about how the Old Testament was perceived in the early stages of Christianity. / Thesis (DD)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2014 / New Testament Studies / unrestricted
