Previous issue date: 2014-08-09 / The capitalist production based on goods finds a breeding ground to achieve its profit goals and economic success, turning elements of human social conscience in mercantile. The culture industry is a vigorous example on this way. Adorno and Horkheimer, exponents of the Frankfurt Scholl, notice this situation of exploration and open the conversation of the subject. However, arts and culture goes beyond the frontiers of capitalist cooptation and exploitation; thus, it is necessary to understand this relationship. Therefore, the theoretical approach moving between Political Economics and Philosophy is a good starting point to studies based on marxist conceptions that will bring an ambiguity able to identify the commodification and also identify goods that have their origin in freedom, and that have in their organic composition identity, values and sense / A produção capitalista fundamentada na mercadoria se desenvolve de maneira a encontrar terreno fértil para alcançar seus objetivos de lucro e sucesso financeiro, transformando funções da consciência social humana em elementos puramente mercantis.

Mudanças e permanências: a indústria cultural e os anos 60 em I\'m Not There, de Todd Haynes / Changes and continuities: the cultural industry and the 1960s in Im Not There, by Todd HaynesGramani, Giuliana 03 April 2014 (has links)
Tal análise permite concluir que o tema central de Im Not There é a indústria cultural. The aim of the present work is to analyze the movie Im Not There (USA, 2007), by the American director Todd Haynes. The analysis will have as its main goal pinpointing the central theme of the movie, which portrays the life and career of Bob Dylan through six very distinct characters. Therefore, three characters will be thoroughly observed, the ones more closely connected to the musical universe, namely the boy who presents himself as Woody Guthrie, Jack Rollins and Jude Quinn. The other three characters (Robbie Clark, Arthur Rimbaud and Billy the Kid) will be discussed insofar as they raise relevant issues for understanding the film. This analysis leads to the conclusion that the main topic in Im Not There is the culture industry. It is thus possible to see in which way the movie deals with this issue and how the theme works as a starting point for a broader discussion concerning the social and political panorama of the 1960s in the United States. Finally, it is necessary to debate the importance of a contemporary movie having as its topic the 1960s and how Im Not There itself, as a cultural object, relates to the discussion it proposes regarding the culture industry

A realidade como ideologia: sobre o problema da ideologia na obra de Theodor W. Adorno / Reality as ideology: on problem of ideology in the work of Theodor W. AdornoPedroso, Gustavo Jose de Toledo 26 September 2007 (has links)
The thesis proposal is to explain the peculiarities of the concept of ideology in Adorno s works, understanding it as a central concept in the Adornian philosophy. To do so, first it is presented a reinterpretation of the articulation between myth and Aufklärung as it is explained in the book Dialektik der Aufklärung, in order to define the general historical frame in which the issue presents itself to Adorno. After this, anti-semitism and culture industry, the main expressions of the reversion of Aufklärung to mythology, are then analyzed. Regarding the former, the texts written by Adorno within the Research Project on Anti-Semitism and the Elements of Anti-Semitism are discussed, in order to search for the psychological and socio-economic basis of both Fascism and anti-semitism and, through this, present the Adornian diagnosis of the contemporaneity. The results of this work are then used in the analysis of the culture industry as the main form of ideology in the late capitalism.

Dilemas da desconstrução - a educação crítica diante dos apelos de consumo da indústria cultural: entre questionar a lógica e subtrair o que se gosta sob o capitalismo tardio / Dilemmas of Deconstruction - critical education to face culture industry consumption appeals: between asking for its logics and subtract what we like in late capitalismPaula Theophilo de Saboia 22 April 2009 (has links)
This work aims to understand the possibility to promote a formative education which could offer conditions for some resistance to consumer and advertising culture, with the intention of withdrawing the subjects out of a passive and spectator attitude to a creative and engaged one. At first we aimed to carry out an advertising and media literacy which would skill the youth to deal with these stimuli in an enlightened and attentive way. Our theoretical and field surveys revealed that this task could provoke psychic resistance related to withdrawing what we like or what we believe we like which involved dreams based on having and looking like and brands consumption. These aspects may be understood as some of the pillars of culture industry ideology and logics in late capitalism. The theoretical concepts which guided this work were administered society and culture industry as presented by Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer from the Frankfurt School, Adorno´s proposals for formative education which could work as antidote to this industry, as well as the concept of ideology as articulated after Marx by Wilhelm Reich and retaken by René Kaës. Kaës´ Psychoanalytical Theory of Groups was the basis to think the formation of social ties and groups facilitation in a transforming perspective. In order to analyze the youth discourse we are based on the Freudian concept of perlaboration, on studies about adolescent problems by Monica do Amaral, Jeammet and Corcos and others. Gilles Lipovetskys look upon contemporary phenomena and the so-called media-fashion culture were important to update a discussion about consumer society. As a result of our field survey held with young people from the 3rd grade of high school in a public school in São Paulo, Brazil, we concluded that a formal apprehension of what lies behind the logic of advertising is fast and precise. However, it implies a deconstruction which can be threatening and painful. It has to be looked at carefully as it refers to a structural deconstruction of what is understood as our environment, and so some dreams may fade away. Although borrowed from the culture industry, these dreams exist and guide many of us. The work of a critical education towards consumption and advertising must therefore overcome an instrumental approach and focus on the strengthening of the self by means of activities to promote self-awareness and intra / intersubjective transformation, preferably acting in transitional space through groups facilitation.

This doctoral thesis is a discussion of the precariousness of the articulation poiesis/praxis/ theoria in music education in Brazil. Currently, the structure of Brazilian education finds itself in a half education (Halbbildung2) structure, with technicalizing tendencies, into which the teaching of music (in regular schooling and special schools in musical training) is inserted. This precarious articulation of poíesis/praxis/theoria in music education may be due, among other possible reasons, to the hegemony of the culture industry (as an ideological system) that promotes pre-established standards for consumption, and in the process traps aisthesis within a leveling and average taste. In this perspective, we seek to investigate the possibilities for the dialectical re-articulation of musical activities (poíesis/praxis/theoria) for a musical education grounded in music appreciation and comprehension of the work of art, an alternative to the culture industry. In this light, we start from the theoretical framework based on the adopted concepts (education, culture, culture industry, training / Bildung, the activities of poiesis, praxis and theoria), and we discuss the considerations of Adorno regarding music education, with emphasis on dialectical thinking. We examine ways for the articulation poiesis/praxis/theoria to occur, since in many contexts of musical teaching these activities are fully decoupled, making difficult a comprehensive understanding of the object of study. Through the various pedagogical proposals on education and musical training that emerged throughout the world in the twentieth and their evolution in Brazil, we retrospectively trace the gradual exclusion of music from regular schooling and the growing interference of the culture industry in the fields of education, of musical poetics and praxis, influencing listening habits and aisthesis (perception), taste and aesthetic judgment, as well as the indiscriminate use of methods of music education both biased and restricted to popular song. Our discussion of the training and teaching of music seeks the recoupling of the musical activities of poiesis, praxis and theoria in a dialectical, interactive and complementary, full and not technicalizing form, where poetics (composers and works) will be the synchronizing axis of these activities, disciplines and content, developing a critical, hermeneutic thought that is emancipated from the standards of musical consumption, be the musician songwriter, performer or musicologist. Finally, in order to verify the relevance, feasibility and practicability of the ideas discussed, we analyze the design of the musical education project Playing the Life (Tocando a Vida) of the Aparecido Savegnago Institution (Instituição Aparecido Savegnago), which takes into account this rearticulation of musical activities, from their pedagogical guidelines to their everyday pedagogy

The Constructions of Fay Weldon, Woman of LettersBlymiller, Harriet 28 March 2007 (has links)
Contemporary British novelist Fay Weldon negotiates the postmodern "culture industry" as the self-conscious heir to a traditon of women writers dating back to the Middle Ages. Like her predecessors, Weldon defensively and offensively negotiates ideological constructions of womanhood, including injunctions to chastity, modesty, and silence; prohibitions against formal education for women; disdain for the literary production and commercial success of women writers; and the application of double standards in the critical reception of their works. Modernizing the strategies traditionally deployed by women writers, Weldon engages with the advertising industry and the mass-oriented literature of radio and television, using them to construct a career and a public identity for herself while advancing an alternative history of women in the twentieth and early twenty-first century. She exploits the distinctions between high culture, popular culture and mass culture in order to provoke critical reflection; partly for this reason, her work deliberately resists academic criticism. The novels Praxis, Puffball, The Cloning of Joanna May, The Life and Loves of a She-Devil, and The Bulgari Connection explore the phenomenon Walter Benjamin described as the nullification of "aura" in the age of mechanical reproduction; they interrogate the connections between several kinds of reproduction associated with human gestation, women's bodies and social identities, and language and literature. Weldon's interrogative fictions experiment with the novel form, and their reception has been mixed, often splitting along gender lines. Feminists have not always embraced Weldon because she questions everything. Because her prolific output is ongoing, Weldon's achievement as Woman of Letters cannot yet be fully assessed.

In Search of the Artist: The Influences of Commercial Interest on an Art School - A Narrative AnalysisSette, Michael Leonard 09 June 2014 (has links)
The current study will investigate how identities and roles of the artist converge with competing identities and roles fostered at the institutional level within an art college as revealed through the marketing literature that they produce to attract students and business partnerships. The sociological focus for this proposal is the tension between art as a creative expressive endeavor and art as a commodity that has entered into social transactions unintended by the original expression of the artist. The researcher documents and describes (via narrative analysis) how an art school negotiates competing relationships between the pressures to teach and promote art for the sake of aesthetic and personal value (autonomy) versus the pressure to teach and promote art for school subsidized market values.
The data for the current study will come from the Ringling College of Art and Design website and brochures from the school that advertise the educational opportunities available to prospective students. The analyses will focus on the particular language, cultural codes, and stories that the school uses to describe the 1) identity and purpose of the institution, 2) types of students (ideal students) they are looking for to attend the school, 3) artistic opportunities open to students, 4) types of collaborations with organizations/businesses outside of the institution, and 5) goals, and production/consumption of art.

On the Authenticity of Music Arts and Its Conditions of DigitizationChung, Ming-hsi 05 September 2011 (has links)
Since the Industrial Revolution onward, the technology involved in the music arts caused the works to be a lot of copies, production and distribution. Like early LPs, cassettes, and recent CDs, digital format files and so on, not only changed the way of listening and media habits of audience, but also affected the artists' creative thoughts. For this phenomenon, Adorno and other Frankfurt School members who advocated the concept of ¡§culture industry¡¨ thought mass production could lead to a decline in music quality, resulting in kitsch, superficial cultural goods, and losing its authenticity. Is the situation really so pessimistic? Nowadays, the conception of production and consumption of music has been very different from the past. Do we living in the digital age be able to distinguish which is kitsch, and further to interpret the contemporary authenticity of music arts?
In this study, I want to focus on the two core concepts: kitsch and authenticity, and the characteristic of music arts to explain. From Benjamin and Adorno's theoretical context, I try to explore how the evolution of technology eliminate the ¡§aura¡¨ of traditional works, and then caused qualitative changes to the classical music and the popular music as representatives of high culture and popular culture. The boundary between the two is getting indistinct with the advent of postmodern context. In addition, I want to reveal the inherent authenticity of the popular culture by discussing the aspect of its rebellious and subversive ideology, and give another interpretation of the kitsch colure in Adorno¡¦s point. Furthermore, the technology revolution provides new perspectives and techniques for musical creation, and also transforms the meaning of kitsch culture. Here, I attempt to clarify producers / creators how to construct the contemporary music aesthetics, and find out the forward strategy of getting rid of kitsch, returning to the populace.
Another approach in this study is consumers¡¦ listening models, including attentively static listening and dynamic body senses, to develop a multi dimension authenticity according to the individual¡¦s different situations and listening attitude. Finally, I explore how the special mobile listening model in the postmodern consumer society associated with the Baudrillard's consumption theory, and try to figure out, in the shadow of late capitalism, how to reject integration and incorporation of kitsch culture, and discover the possible practice of being authentic.

The public studio for ephemeral arts: an adaptive reuse of the Winnipeg metropolitan theatreGhandhari, Shahabaldin 20 January 2011 (has links)
As a master’s practicum of interior design, this project is concerned with the role of design in shaping mass and individual identity. Cultural commodities, as components of the Culture Industry, effectively define a communal identity for the individuals. The Winnipeg Metropolitan Theatre is chosen as the site of this practicum. This Practicum is interested in defining new spatial relationships and functions. In order for these goals to be achieved, a new function has been defined. The public studio for ephemeral arts is open to the whole society for being involved in the artistic process. By using a qualitative research method, this practicum studies the theoretical aspects of modern mass identity. However being an interior design project, it heavily relies on the ideas of a selected number of theorists, mainly from the Frankfurt school, for building the theoretical foundation of the design. The new design is the result of questioning the existing space’s spatial hierarchy, the new function’s spatial requirements, and a critical approach toward the adaptive reuse of an existing building.
