African drumming as a medium to promote emotional and social well-being of children aged 7 to 12 in residential care

Flores, Kim 18 June 2012 (has links)
PAPER COPY ACCOMPANIED BY A DVD OF CHILDREN'S PARTICIPATION IN THE WORKSHOPS. This research project investigated the potential of African drumming to enhance the emotional and social well-being of children in residential care. Sixteen children from the Epworth Children’s Village in South Africa were purposively selected to participate in the study. The majority of participants had been exposed to some form of neglect and/or abuse and displayed high levels of anger, anxiety, depression and/or disruptive behaviour. Mixed in terms of gender and ethnicity, they fell within the middle childhood stage of development. The participants attended weekly sessions of African djembe drumming over a period of four months. Principles and practices of indigenous African music making formed the foundation of the drum circle facilitation approach used. Gestalt theory, as applied in Gestalt play therapy, provided the theoretical framework from which the therapeutic dimensions of African drumming were explored. A mixed methods approach, using both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection and analysis, was employed. For the quantitative component, participants completed the Beck Youth Inventories, measuring self-concept, anxiety, depression, anger and disruptive behaviour, before and after the project. Concerning the qualitative aspects, focused observations were conducted wherein all video-recorded workshops were regularly and systematically analysed to assess the children’s emotional and social functioning. Furthermore, semi-structured interviews and focus groups were conducted with relevant staff members and children, respectively, in an attempt to explore the value and feasibility of presenting such a programme within the residential care setting. According to the Inventories’ pre- and post-test results, the intervention did not appear to significantly impact upon the participants’ self-concept or levels of depression, anger or disruptive behaviour. Anxiety, on the other hand, increased. Qualitative findings nevertheless suggest that the workshops substantially enhanced the children’s emotional and social functioning, albeit only for the duration of the sessions. The workshops markedly improved participants’ self-esteem and self-confidence, pro-social behaviour, enjoyment, concentration and manifestation of musical capacity (aspects which reflect Gestalt concepts of awareness, contact, self-regulation, self-expression and mastery). Reasons for the failure of these improvements to transfer to the children’s everyday functioning may involve the severity of their socio-emotional difficulties as well as limitations within the drumming intervention itself. / Thesis (DMus)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Music / unrestricted

Samlingen som arena för barns inflytande

Asadi, Tara, Renström, Ida January 2017 (has links)

Advanced high frequency switched-mode power supply techniques and applications

Nuttall, Daniel Robert January 2011 (has links)
This Thesis examines the operation and dynamic performance of a single-stage, single-switch power factor corrector, S4 PFC, with an integrated magnetic device, IM. Also detailed isthe development and analysis of a high power light emitting diode, HP LED, power factorcorrection converter and proposed voltage regulation band control approach. The S4 PFC consists of a cascaded discontinuous current mode, DCM, boost stage anda continuous current mode, CCM, forward converter. The S4 PFC achieves a high powerfactor, low input current harmonics and a regulated voltage output, utilising a singleMOSFET. A steady-state analysis of the S4 PFC with the IM is performed, identifying theoperating boundary conditions for the DCM power factor correction stage and the CCMoutput voltage regulation stage. Integrated magnetic analysis focuses on understanding theperformance, operation and generated flux paths within the IM core, ensuring the device doesnot affect the normal operation of the converter power stage. A design method for the S4 PFCwith IM component is developed along with a cost analysis of this approach. Analysis predictsthe performance of the S4 PFC and the IM, and the theoretical work is validated by MATLABand SABER simulations and measurements of a 180 W prototype converter. It is not only the development of new topological approaches that drives theadvancement of power electronic techniques. The recent emergence of HP LEDs has led to aflurry of new application areas for these devices. A DCM buck-boost converter performs thepower factor correction and energy storage, and a cascaded boundary conduction current modebuck converter regulates the current through the LED arrays. To match the useful operatinglifetime of the HP LEDs, electrolytic capacitors are not used in the PFC converter. Analysisexamines the operation and dynamic characteristics of a PFC converter with low capacitiveenergy storage capacity and its implications on the control method. A modified regulationband control approach is proposed to ensure a high power factor, low input current harmonicsand output voltage regulation of the PFC stage. Small signal analysis describes the dynamicperformance of the PFC converter, Circle Criterion is used to determine the loop stability.Theoretical work is validated by SABER and MATLAB simulations and measurements of a180 W prototype street luminaire.

The Circle of Willis is an anastomotic polygon encephalon base that communicates the carotid system with vertebrobasilar system and carotid each other. There are lots of morphological variations that polygon and possible differences between genders particularly in the A1 segment of the anterior cerebral artery and the origin of the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) which are risk factors for anatomical brain aneurysms. The purpose of this study was to comparatively analyze the frequency of hypoplasia of the segment A1 and fetal type of cerebral posterior artery in man and woman. It was retrospectively reviewed 648 magnetic resonance angiographies in 326 men and 322 women, respectively. The tests were randomly chosen among about a thousand magnetic resonance angiographic performed between 2010 and 2016 in Multimagem Diagnostic Center, regardless of the medical reason request. Hypoplasia of the A1 segment was defined by qualitative analysis, when there was a clear asymmetry between the two segments A1, right and left. For hypoplasia analysis were also measured diameters of segments A1. For hypoplasia analysis were also measured diameters of segments A1. For analysis of the fetal type (diameter of the ACP origin of the carotid artery> diameter of the P1 segment of the ACP) were analyzed 1,296 carotid arteries (right and left) in 648 individuals. Statistical analysis was performed using Fisher's exact test. In men 152/326 (46.6%) showed hypoplasia A1 compared to 108/322 (33.5%) of women (p <0.01, OR = 1.7; 95% CI, 1.3-2, 4). Hypoplasia A1 was more common in men right (20% vs. 15%, p <0.01). Fetal type was more common in women 151/644 (23.4%) than in men (100/652; 15.3%) (p <0.001, OR = 1.7; 95% CI, 1.3-2, two). Women also have more bilateral fetal rate than men (8.0% vs. 3.4%; p <0.01). In conclusion, hypoplasia of the A1 segment of the anterior cerebral artery is more common in men and in women there is a greater frequency of fetal type of the posterior cerebral artery. The effect of the circle of security parenting programme on parental self-efficacy and internalising behaviours in children

Rose, Jenny Lee January 2019 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / Early Childhood development is an important phase of development, wherein the trajectory of the child’s life can potentially be determined. However, not all children experience positive outcomes, and many present with psychopathology. In particular, psychopathology in children will manifest as either externalizing behaviours or internalising behaviours. The treatment of internalising disorders becomes increasingly complex, as there isn’t always outward behaviour to give evidence to the inward difficulties. Literature amplifies the importance of the role of the parent in ensuring the well-being of the child and in working towards healthy developmental outcomes.

The benefits of using world literature for globalizing English in the ESL classroom / Fördelarna med att använda världslitteratur för att globalisera engelska i andraspråksundervisning

Zeino, Arwa, Tabiei, Aiat January 2021 (has links)
Although the focus on English as a global language is apparent in the Swedish curriculum today, many educators do not take advantage of world literature and non-native English authors in their ESL classrooms. With the help of empirical research, we investigate the benefits of using such literature for gaining global awareness. Furthermore, we analyze the activities and teaching approaches used in the empirical studies. Through this essay, we summarize the empirical research used for this essay and synthesize the results to find out what implications were found. It shows that using non-native fiction helps students to learn and explore different cultures, which also expands their global view. Apart from this, teaching methods such as discussions, literature circles, presentations, blogging and collaborative learning deepened students' global view and cultural awareness. The teaching methods that were used while working with world literature showed that students were conscious of their own learning and developed this ability by working in a social environment. This paper concludes with describing the limitations of writing the study, and presents a future research project that involves the field of world literature.
