Personnages et stéréotypes dans les romans d’Alain Robbe-Grillet / Characters and stereotypes in the work of Robbe-Grillet

Jassim, Hassan 01 July 2010 (has links)
This thesis aims at investigating the presence of stereotypical characters in the work of Robbe-Grillet retrieved from the paralitterature. Stereotypes that will be discussed in this work are: the romantic loner, wandering the city, the vigilante crime, the detective, the killer, the trio of novels of the jealousy, the prostitute, the perverse voyeur, the stripper, and the storyteller. After this “exploration”, we reach the flowing conclusion: as a whole, the work of Robbe-Grillet is rooted in the stereotype. However, we will discover that this is not an apology for stereotype. But simply taking into account its action in contemporary culture and the role of the latter in the elaboration discourse of the work.

Marcoux, Gabrielle 04 1900 (has links)
In the present work, we argue that the artist Egon Schiele (1890-1918) was able to express the ambivalence and anxiety surrounding the topic of sexuality around 1900 through his erotic drawings of female nudes, especially those produced in 1910-1911. In the early twentieth century, in Vienna, essentialist and polarized concepts about women and female sexuality are developed, especially in the fields of psychoanalysis and continental philosophy. Young women are denied access to any kind of sexual knowledge or experimentation. Meanwhile, men are torn between austere discourses preaching abstention and their sexual urges and curiosity; many must secretly resort to prostitutes in order to satisfy their impulses. For most, an active sex life implies venereal diseases and social decay. While referring to psychoanalytical and feminist theories about the gaze and its encounter with the carnal body, we have studied the spectatorial relationships established between the models, the spectator and the artist across this corpus, in order to better understand the repudiation of the phallocentric traditions as proposed by Schiele. We believe that by representing the female body in disturbing and inconstant esthetic manners, as well as by reaching out to his contemporaries in ambiguous ways through hybrid visual devices, the young artist was able to undermine the traditional authority of the male viewer over the feminine object of desire. In so doing, Schiele managed to criticize the prevailing hypocrisy and discomfort regarding sexual identities and practices at the turn of the century.

Recepce a české překlady díla Pauline Réage, Histoire d'O (Příběh O) / Reception and Czech translations Story of O, a novel by Pauline Réage

Dobiášová, Kristýna January 2016 (has links)
1 Abstract The thesis describes the reception and Czech translations of Story of O by Pauline Réage, an erotic novel which was considered scandalous in its time (1954) and became part of the canon of French contemporary prose. In the first part, the thesis characterizes the structure and style of Story of O. It then presents the specific context of its first publication and places the novel in the evolution of French literature. In this part, the thesis also attempts to describe the reception context in the fifties and compares the situation with how the novel is perceived by the current literary scene and cultural domain in general. In this part of the reception analysis, the thesis relies on critical reviews in French periodicals and reactions on the internet. It also mentions the perspective of literary theoreticians on similarly themed works. In the second part, the thesis introduces two Czech translations and attempts to recreate the reasons which led to the publication of the first translation Příběh O.: krásná z Roissy, Tabu, 1991 by Lucie Erbenová and the second translation Příběh O; Návrat do Roissy, Host, 2005 by Matěj Turek. Furthermore, it presents the reasons for the republication in Host in 2013. The analysis of the current reception in the target culture preceeds the focal part of this thesis...

Erôs and Education : Socratic Seduction in Three Platonic Dialogues

Dypedokk Johnsen, Hege January 2016 (has links)
Plato’s Socrates is famous for claiming that “I know one thing: That I know nothing” (see e.g. Ap. 21d and Meno 81d). There is one subject that Socrates repeatedly claims to have expertise in, however: ta erôtika (see e.g. Symp. 198d1). Socrates also refers to this expertise as his erôtikê technê (Phdr. 257a7–8), which may be translated as “erotic expertise”. In this dissertation, I investigate Socrates’ erotic expertise: what kind of expertise is it, what is it constituted by, where is it put into practice, and how is it practiced? I argue that the purposes this expertise serve are, to a significant extent, educational in nature. After first having clarified the dissertation’s topic and aim, as well as my methodological approach, I present an initial account of erôs and Socrates’ erotic expertise. While discussing what constitutes Socrates’ erotic expertise, I account for two erotic educational methods: midwifery and matchmaking. I further argue that these methods tend to be accompanied by two psychological techniques, namely charming and shaming. I argue that these methods and techniques are systematically applied by Socrates when he puts his erotic expertise into practice. In the dissertation, three dialogues where Socrates practices his erotic expertise are scrutinized: Lysis, Charmides, and Alcibiades I. I focus on Socrates’ encounters with the eponymous youths of the dialogues, and each dialogue is devoted a chapter of its own. I show how these dialogues are erotically charged, and also how Socrates in these dialogues demonstrates his erotic expertise. I argue that Socrates’ expertise on erôs plays an essential role in his attempts to engage the three youths in the processes of self-cultivation, learning, and the very practice of philosophy. In the final chapter of the dissertation I turn to some questions that arise in light of my readings, and summarize the results of my investigation.

The mainly objectives of this study were to disclose the specificities of the erotic genre staged in this soap opera; analyze how the receivers arrogate this fictional narrative and how they elaborate their own report about the eroticism; finally, evaluate the constituents that set up the dialogs established among these women and this soap opera. This study is grounded in the British Cultural Studies, specially centered on Raymond Williams and Richard Hoggart s studies, as well as in the Mediation Theory formulated by jesús Martín- Barbero. The quotidian and the erotic narrative are components that build up the relation between the receivers and the so-called Senhora do Destino soap opera; here these components are considered as being mediations (MARTÍN-BARBERO, 1997a). Wherefore, the erotic genre of this soap opera and the quotidian of these receivers materialize the conflicting relation between nature and culture, the real and the imaginary. Connected to the matrixes of the melodrama, the erotic starts up in these women ways of being and living and, thus, elaborate, in a consistent way, the dialog between them and the so-called Senhora do Destino soap opera / Esta é uma pesquisa de recepção da telenovela Senhora do destino realizada com mulheres na faixa etária de 19 a 50 anos e moradoras de Vila Pouca do Campo em Portugal. Portanto, o gênero erótico nessa telenovela e o cotidiano dessas receptoras materializam a conflituosa relação entre a natureza e a cultura, o real e o imaginário.
