From Manet to GQ: a critical investigation of ‘gentlemen’s pornography’

Viljoen, Estella 12 March 2004 (has links)
This thesis offers a reading of GQ South Africa 2000, the first glossy men’s magazine to be launched in South Africa (in 2000). It traces the possible iconographical genealogy of glossy men’s magazines to canonical erotic artworks and examines the aesthetic conventions used by GQ to elevate its contents through an implied association with art. This thesis, furthermore, investigates the commonalities between GQ, a ‘mainstream’ publication, and ‘pornography’ (as defined by the United States Civil Rights Ordinance 1985). In this way, the fluid impermanence of ‘art’, ‘pornography’ and ‘popular culture’ as typologies is highlighted. The new taxonomy of ‘gentlemen’s pornography’ is introduced in order to counter the notion that material that has the gloss of ‘high culture’ and is deemed socially acceptable, cannot be pornographic. This thesis submits that a critical reading of glossy men’s magazines from an interdisciplinary perspective is imperative in order to reveal their ideological assumptions. The ideological position that informs this study is the radical feminist belief that pornography objectifies and subordinates women and is, therefore, harmful. The thesis is simultaneously grounded in the theoretical methodologies of visual culture and art history, and as such assumes the intonation of these disciplines. From a Postmodern point-of-view, popular visual culture not only wields power in terms of generalising (capitalist and sexist) western paradigms, but is also skilful at masking its significant influence in doing so. For this reason, this dissertation endeavours to raise a critical dialogue concerning the ideological ‘message’ of glossy men’s magazines. The sometimes antithetical nature of discourse critically centered on gender representation in visual culture may be attributed to the pervasiveness of familiar (and therefore seemingly harmless) female objectification in the popular media. This thesis examines the iconography of gendered stereotypes against the erotic/pornographic, high culture/low culture object/subject binaries, and, furthermore, situates these types in the wider dialectic of ‘obscene’ (off-scene) versus ‘acceptable’ culture. The glossy men’s magazines that form the interest of this study are a trade situated in the alliance of social elitism and representational control over the female body, and, thus, this thesis marks the point of intersection between consumer culture and the politics of display. / Dissertation (MA (Visual Arts))--University of Pretoria, 2003. / Visual Arts / unrestricted

“BEKRÄFTELSE FRÅN KVINNOR ÄR INGET SKÄMT” : EN STUDIE OM INCELS FÖRESTÄLLNINGAR OM MASKULINITET OCH INTIMA RELATIONER / "VALIDATION FROM WOMEN IS NO JOKE" : CONCEPTIONS ABOUT MASCULINITY AND INTIMATE RELATIONSHIPS AMONG INCELS

Hoffmann, Evelina, Åberg, Elin January 2021 (has links)
Previous research has placed incels in relation to violence and radicalization. Relatively little academic attention has been paid to what can be seen as the essence of the community; the lack of intimate relationships. The following study aims to close this gap by exploring how incels view masculinity and intimate relationships, and how this view relates to theoretical perspectives on sexuality and masculinity. This study is based on a qualitative method with a social constructivist approach. Data was collected in the form of a time-based sample where written posts from the three largest international forums for incels were collected on three different occasions. At each occasion all forum posts that were created or updated within a chosen specific hour were included in the sample. The material was processed using an inductive conventional content analysis. The theoretical perspective is based on hegemonic masculinity, and a development of Bourdieu's concept of physical capital. Erotic capital was used as a complementary theoretical concept. The overall results show that people on the incel forums relate to two imagined structures within which intimate relationships are assumed to arise. One structure is based on an imagined masculinity hierarchy where only men with hegemonic status are assumed to be able to initiate intimate relationships with women. The second structure consists of an imagined sexual market where forum members believe that women strive to initiate relationships with attractive and successful men. The people on the incel forums try to develop and establish strategies to achieve a superior position in the masculinity hierarchy and on the sexual market. The purpose of advancing within the hierarchies is based on the notion that only a superior position can enable intimate relationships.

Gauthier, Marie-Hélène 09 1900 (has links)
As early as its first appearance in the cycle of conferences titled Le Temps et l’Autre, the notion of the feminine discussed by Levinas has provoked an interpretative debate that goes on to this day. The different readings have vacillated between an assimilation of the feminine to the scheme of a patriarchal thought from which philosophy has a hard time freeing itself and a hermeneutics that justifies its use as the other of thought often judged to be too virile. The works that situate themselves in this second interpretative line of thought also seek to paint a more complex picture by calling not only on Levinas’s philosophy, but also on his Judaism. Following this second line, the present study aims to rehabilitate the feminine by inscribing it in the general economy of Levinas’s work. From the erotic relationship (Chapitre I : Le rapport érotique), via the mechanisms of the constitution of conscience (Chapitre II : Topologie de l’effacement : subjectivité et discrétion), to maternal messianism (Chapitre III : Maternité, fécondité et avenir), the notion of the feminine will be followed through an itinerary scrutinizing its many transformations to finally converge on a conception of subjectivity that is resolutely “feminine”.

Herstory: female artists' resistance in The Awakening, Corregidora, and The Dew Breaker

Schaefer, Mercedez L. 06 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / For women in patriarchal societies, life is stitched with silence and violence. This is especially true for women of color. In a world that has cast women as invisible and voiceless, to create from the margins is to demand to be seen and heard. Thus, women’s art has never had the privilege of being art for art’s sake and instead is necessarily involved in the work of articulating and (re)writing female experience. When women seek, through their work and art, to feel deeply and connect with other women, they tap into what Audre Lorde has famously termed “the power of the erotic.” Lorde suggests that to acknowledge and trust those deepest feelings within our bodies is a subversive power that spurs social change. In the following work, novels by Kate Chopin, Gayl Jones, and Edwidge Danticat are linked by their female characters who seek the erotic via their art of choice and, in doing so, resist disempowerment and explore the life-giving nature of female connection. Furthermore, because the authors themselves are engaged in rendering the female experience visible, the novels discussed actively converse with their respective waves of feminism and propel social activism and feminist discourse. Hence, this project provides both a close reading of The Awakening, Corregidora, and The Dew Breaker, and a broader contention on the role of women’s literature in social justice.

[en] PARADISE AND INTOXICATION: ANNOTATED TRANSLATION OF GHAZALS BY HAFEZ OF SHIRAZ / [pt] PARAÍSO E EMBRIAGUEZ: TRADUÇÃO COMENTADA DE GAZÉIS DE HAFIZ DE XIRAZ

NICOLAS THIELE VOSS DE OLIVEIRA 25 May 2020 (has links)
[en] This thesis presents annotated translations of ten ghazals by the 14th-century Persian poet Hafez of Shiraz. These are direct translations from Persian into Portuguese, considering the formal and thematic elements of the ghazal – a genre of poem structured in couplets. In terms of form, my translation tries to adapt the formal elements of the ghazal – mainly its monorhyme and long lines. When it comes to themes, the translations take into consideration the traditional conventions of the amorous lyric ghazal, as well as the influence of Sufism – usually defined as Islamic mysticism. I see the interplay between profane and mystic meanings as a central aspect of Hafezian poetics, generating uncertainty in the reader. The ghazals that have been selected for translation do not necessarily follow a common thread, but are all iconic, oft translated, poems from his divan.

Loayza Cabezas, Grimanesa Madeleine 20 January 2022 (has links)
[EN] This research focuses on the analysis of theatrical praxis, coming from the sceno-performative staging of: Description of a painting, written by Heiner Müller, and directed by Madeleine Loayza, in order to expose the importance of the "erotic tension" (understood as vital energy associated with Eros) present in the poiesis of the theatrical event. We will focus on the against-hegemonic devices (which characterizes its irreverent and critical gesture) present in the sensoperceptive and receptive phenomenon, which also involves the relationship between the actor-operator/performer with the various elements that intervene in the production the mentioned poiesis and its scope to the spectator. For this reason, the research includes convivial productive poíesis and receptive poíesis, focused on the process and the result. Under this context, the way in which this tension occurs is observed, analyzed and interpreted, summoning us from the role of artist-researcher/spectator. The study concludes with the conceptual support and design of the research-creation: Woman on fire; where the researcher is assumed as artist-searcher/director, actress and playwright. Observes how the senso-perceptive and receptive phenomenon of poíesis is constituted, the way in which "erotic tension" operates and its scope to the spectator is revealed, as a device of against-hegemonic resistance that uses mechanisms and forms of liminal production, for which the operating characteristics of the device are discussed according to the particularities of the proposed assembly. The research considers contemporary theatricalities as an analytical approach, that belong to the field of Theatrology, with emphasis on the performative dimension of the theatrical sign that highlights the spatial/temporal and kinesic aspects. We are interested in analyzing the dynamics of the enforcement of the sign on stage (which involves the viewer), rather than limiting ourselves to identify the structure of the theatrical signs; this perspective displaces the axis of dramatic literature as a canonical reference to address the stage experience. Giving emphasis to the role of the body in the sensory-perceptual and receptive phenomenon, between the actor and the spectator, refers us to the Nietzschean vision that takes as a reference the Greek tragedy (5th and 4th centuries BC), later taken up again by Artaud and other thinkers and philosophers of this period; In this way, the role of the spectator in the scenic dynamics is also enhanced, from self-alteration and their critical and self-critical capacity. Therefore, the concept of liminality in Description of a painting has an important political character as bot: against-hegemonic and anti-structural. The parameters for observing the operability of the "erotic tension" are seen in the poetic, devices that configure its poiesis in the productive, receptive and convivial modalities. In the staging of Description of a painting; the playwriting, the performative practices, the analysis of the "conviviality" between the various materials or matrices that intervene the invoice process of the work as poetic devices, constitute the pillars that support the research-creation process. Regarding the conceptual support and design exhibition for the staging of Woman on Fire, it is developed by the methodology that guides the focus of this study, with the aim that it can be incorporated and replicated in other creative processes. / Loayza Cabezas, GM. / A sexual searching field : A qualitative study of social and sexual contacts on Grindr.

Pedersen, Alexander January 2021 (has links)
This study aims to understand how social and sexual relations are initiated, negotiated and constructed among homo- and bisexual men within a specific sexual field; the geo-social application Grindr. It’s based on qualitative and semi-structured interviews with six self-identified homosexual men in Sweden from various age groups and with various social backgrounds who are using, or has used, Grindr in order to initiate and establish contacts with other homo- and bisexual men. Of certain interest are their experiences of using the application and being a part of its social and sexual setting.   In order to analyse the interviews, a combination of sexual script theory and sexual field theory has been used, together with Norbert Elias theories on the relationship between the established and the outsiders. The results indicate that Grindr is a refuge and safe space for homo- and bisexual men and queer persons from the social and sexual norms that prevails in a heteronormative society. As such, Grindr could be understood as a social and sexual field of its own, in which interpersonal scripts and negotiations are crucial for establishing contacts of various kinds. There is also a remarkable sexual stratification based on various sexual capitals that the users of Grindr use to position themselves in relation to each other in order to be regarded as desirable. One consequence of these “structures of desire” is that some personal and bodily qualities often are regarded in a less favourable way, sometimes with stigmatization and marginalization of groups of people as dire consequences of these structures of sexuality. There’s also a remarkable distinction, resistance and ambivalence against the heteronormative society and its cultural scenarios, but at the same time it was a necessary part in the collective self-image of being an outsider group.

Radical self-care : performance, activism, and queer people of color

McMaster, James Matthew 21 October 2014 (has links)
Queer people of color in the United States are perpetually under siege politically, psychically, economically, physically, and affectively in the twenty-first century under capitalist white supremacist heteropatriarchy. Radical Self-Care, connects radical artivist performance in Austin, Texas with the theoretical genealogies of queer of color critique, women of color feminism, queer studies, and performance studies in order to propose a program for queer of color survival, sustainment and political revolt. Radical self-care is the holistic praxis that names the confluence of two distinct but inextricable processes developed in the first two chapters of this thesis. In chapter one, I take up the Generic Ensemble Company’s workshop production of What’s Goin’ On? as a case study in order to theorize the ‘performative of sustenance,’ a mechanism of queer worldmaking and queer world sustainment defined by its erotic and utopian affects. Chapter two, through a discussion of reproductive rights activism at the Texas state capitol, reformulates the concept of ‘parrhesia,’ the Socratic practice of ‘free speech’ taken up by Foucault in discussions of the care of the self, into a performance praxis of speaking truth to power with the potential to interrupt hegemonic systems of oppression. The final chapter explicates the ways in which these two mechanisms converge and operate as a dyad in the holistic process of radical self-care through an analysis of Fat: The Play, a devised work that premiered in Austin by and about fat queer femmes. Ultimately, Radical Self- Care aspires to offer queers of color a methodology of queer world sustainment that is also a program of political intervention, grounded in solidarity politics, into those systems of oppression that too often characterize queer of color existence as a project of survival rather than a project of flourishing. / text
