Exploring Gay Men’s Use of People-Nearby Applications

Rowsell, Derek 28 March 2018 (has links)
Background: Gay men have adopted the use of people-nearby applications (PNA) to connect with members of the LGBT+ community. PNA uses global positioning system (GPS) data to locate other users in the area and facilitates communication between users through online profiles and instant messaging services. Objectives: This thesis explored gay men’s process of using PNA to connect with other users. Methods: The thesis work was conducted in two phases. The first phase was a review of the existing literature with literature synthesised into major themes. The second phase was an original qualitative study that used group sessions within a qualitative descriptive method and used thematic analysis to explore experiences of PNA use. Findings: The reviewed articles (n = 40) evolved into four major themes: risk, stigma, sexuality, and community. The theme of risk was overrepresented in the literature and comprised research that reviewed the sexual health risks of using PNA to meet partners. The review themes aligned closely with the four themes that emerged from participants’ (n = 6) experiences that were revealed in the original qualitative study: community, hope, stigma, and doubt. The themes of hope and doubt were found to be driving forces in a cyclical pattern of use reported by the participants, wherein users will repeatedly experience cycling phases of app use and disuse. Conclusion: Phase one of this thesis work exposed a gap in the knowledge related to the process of gay men using PNA. Phase two began to fill that gap by exploring the process of using PNA and furthering academic knowledge of how gay men interact and experience PNA use. The knowledge created in this thesis may assist nurses by providing them with improved cultural understanding of gay men and facilitate open communication between nurses and gay clients.

Onlone 00:00

Chen, Junyun 01 January 2018 (has links)
Being alone is not the only definition of loneliness. Loneliness can be felt even when surrounded by a lot of people, especially in the virtual online world. Our digital devices play an important role in connecting everyone together without the restriction of time and space. Communication became more and more convenient in this era. Mostly we are digitally connected, but sometimes, we are mentally disconnected. We are online and together in this virtual world, but loneliness is always a never ended situation that we are suffering from. As a visual communicator, My works focus on using performance as an approach to explore the evolving relationship between the online communication and online loneliness. In my thesis research, I want to investigate how does the online world created more loneliness to individuals digitally and physically, and how people release their spiritual desire and overcome loneliness in the online world.

''[...]yes, nu ska jag få en vild arab.'' : En genusvetenskaplig studie av Grindr-användare i Stor-Stockholm

Nilsson, Marcus January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to examine how users of Grindr are experiencing and creating gender, ethnicity and race on the application. I interviewed six cis-male between the ages of 20-30 who were active on Grindr. I based my interviews and study on José Esteban Munoz theory on Queer and Queer Temporalities, Raewyn Connells theory on hegemonic masculinity and Sara Ahmeds theory on postcolonial feminism. I interviewed them about fetishisations connected to gender and the creating of masculinity on Grindr and how the construction of the application affect users and the way that they act on it. I also interviewed them about gender and the creating of masculinity connected to thoughts about anti-effeminacy. My informants expressed an ambivalence attitude towards Grindr, all of my informants talked about Grindr as a place to connect with other people and at the same time they talked about experiences of racism and femmephobia on Grindr.

"Är passiv om någon undrar" : En studie i språklig självrepresentation på dejtingappen Grindr

Högdén, Robin January 2017 (has links)

Gränssnitt och identitet inom Tinder och Grindr : Skillnader med avseende på identitetsframställning, funktioner, hierarkier samt presenterat innehåll mellan dejtingapplikationer beroende på syfte och målgrupp / Interfaces and identity on Tinder and Grindr : Differences regarding identity impact, functions, hierarchies and presented content between dating applications depending on their purpose and target audience

Bengtsson, Linnéa January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to gain a more in-depth knowledge and understanding of the dating applications Tinder and Grindr and their structure regarding accented information and identity codes. I intended to gain an understanding of human perception and how this is applied to our modern dating applications. The main focus of the thesis was information hierarchies and visual hierarchies and how people perceive various visual elements. Another relevant aspect was the applications profile settings and self- presentation on the web. The method of the study was a qualitative content analysis with a deductive approach. The empirical material was categorized and summarized in a comparison between the two applications. In the study, discussions arose about the target group and the actual motives of the applications, which was a significant part of the result. Questions about gender, self and other specific identity aspects were also discussed during the study. This essay is written in Swedish.

Eggplants and Peaches: Understanding Emoji Usage on Grindr

Moses, Emeka E 01 May 2018 (has links)
This study focuses on how gay men communicate on the Grindr dating app. Prior research has been conducted on how gay men construct their online identities, however, few studies explore how gay men experience interactions online, negotiate their relationships with other men online, and perceive other users. The researcher conducted in-depth interviews with 20 men who use the Grinder app, a location-based dating app used by men who have sex with men. Additional data were collected by observing user profiles on the app, which is free and public. This comprehensive, qualitative study of gay men who use Grindr provides insights into identity construction, communication tactics, and users’ feelings about their encounters on the app.
