A Performance Guide for Lyric Tenor: A Pedagogical Analysis of Ten Francesco Paolo Tosti Songs

Kano, Mark Aaron 01 January 2016 (has links)
This study provides background information, International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) transcriptions and pronunciations, poetic translations, and pedagogical analyses of ten Francesco Paolo Tosti songs. Included is the connection between the rhythm and meter of the poetry and its’ influence on Tosti’s setting of the text to music. In addition, a portion is devoted to an overview of pedagogy, specifically, appoggio, registers and passaggi in the lyric tenor voice, range and, as well as chiaroscuro. This document addresses potential vocal challenges presented for the lyric tenor voice within each song, as well as the benefits. In particular, suggestions for vowel modifications in the passaggi of the lyric tenor voice in relationship with the provided IPA transcription are addressed. Finally, by gathering all of the necessary information on Aprile, Non t’amo più, Luna d’estate, Preghiera, La serenata, Ideale, A vucchella, In van preghi, L’alba sepàra dalla luce l’ombra, and L’ultima canzone, this performance guide creates a concise tool for teachers and singers in the vocal studio seeking ideal performance practice suggestions.

High-Precision Astrometry Using a Diffractive Pupil and Advancements in Multi-Laser Adaptive Optics

Bendek, Eduardo A. January 2012 (has links)
Detection of earth-size exoplanets using the astrometric signal of the host star requires sub-microarcsecond measurement precision. One major challenge in achieving this precision using a medium-size (< 2-m) space telescope is the calibration of dynamic distortions. A diffractive pupil can be used to generate polychromatic diffraction spikes in the focal plane, which encode the distortions in the optical system and may be used to calibrate astrometric measurements. The first half of this dissertation discusses the design and construction of a laboratory to test this concept. The main components of the system are a high stability star simulator, a diffraction limited off-axis optical system, and the data reduction algorithms to obtain the distortion map calibration. Currently, the laboratory is operational and first tests of distortion measurements have been done validating this concept to improve the astrometric accuracy of a telescope. The second part of this dissertation describes the use of the multi-laser guide star (LGS) system available at the 6.5 m MMT telescope to characterize GLAO performance and advance Laser Tomography Adaptive Optics (LTAO) technology. The system uses five range-gated and dynamically refocused Rayleigh laser beacons to sense the atmospheric wavefront aberration. Corrections are then applied to the wavefront using the 336-actuator adaptive secondary mirror of the telescope. So far, the system has demonstrated successful control of ground-layer aberration over a field of view (FoV) substantially wider than is delivered by conventional adaptive optics, yielding reduction in the width of the on-axis point-spread function from 1.07" to < 0.2" in H band. Both techniques can be combined to improve the astrometric accuracy of ground based telescopes, especially when using Multi-Conjugated Adaptive Optics (MCAO). A diffractive pupil can be used to calibrate the distortions induced by multiple Deformable Mirrors (DM), which is the main limitation to use this kind of AO system for high precision astrometric measurements.

Sérgio Assad's (b. 1952) Aquarelle and Fantasia Carioca: A Performer's Guide

Costa, Eduardo Minozzi January 2012 (has links)
More accurate and authentic performances of Sérgio Assad's (b. 1952) Aquarelle and his Fantasia Carioca can be obtained through insights provided by formal analysis of those pieces, study of the performing traditions of Brazilian traditional music, and the composer's reflections and comments. This document guides readers in recognizing the subtleties that characterize Assad's style and its Brazilian traditional music influences. A select group of styles has been chosen based on their relevance in Assad's work. Characterized by unique accent patterns and melodic/harmonic "clichés," the influences of each Brazilian music genre can be identified in specific measures of the two Assad's pieces included in this study. The correlation between measures and genres provides specific stylistic features that the performer can apply toward an authentic execution.

Vart har alla riktiga problem tagit vägen? : Analys av läromedel i matematik med fokus på problemlösning / Where have all the real problems gone? : An analysis of mathematics teaching material with a focus on problem solving

Krikourian, Narine January 2017 (has links)
Research has shown that the mathematics textbooks are the most widely used in Swedish schools, compared to textbooks in other subjects. At the same time, studies have shown that the content of the textbooks do not fulfil the goals presented in the national education steering documents regarding problem solving in math. The purpose of this study is to analyze textbooks and corresponding teacher’s guide in mathematics for the second grade. Starting from a didactic perspective as an approach to problem solving in order to analyze the teaching material, I decided to use the analytical model constructed by Ann Kristin Larsen. In order to conduct the study, the following questions have been used in this study: In what way the problem solving has been presented in the textbooks? Which problem solving strategies are presented in respective teaching material based on didactic perspective? What types of problem solving tasks are presented in respective teaching material?  In what way the concept problem solving is presented in the teacher’s guide? In conclusion, the result of the study shows that there are both similarities and differences between the two instructional materials that have been studied in the way they presented problem solving. The study shows that the teaching material is not compatible with Charles and Lester’s (1982) criteria. As for the teacher's guide and the support it provides, the investigation shows that different textbooks give different support and guidance to teachers.

Synchrony of the Sublime: A Performer's Guide to Duke Ellington's Wordless Melodies for Soprano

Clark, Lisa M. 01 January 2017 (has links)
This monograph provides an in-depth examination of the background, musical, and performance issues related to Duke Ellington’s wordless melodies, as well as epigrammatic biographies of Ellington and three female vocalists whose voices he employed as instruments: Adelaide Hall, Kay Davis, and Alice Babs. As early as the twenties, Ellington innovatively used the voice as a wordless instrumental color—an idea he extended into both his secular and sacred works. His iconoclastic instrumentalization of the soprano voice in compositions such as “Creole Love Call”, “Minnehaha”, “Transblucency”, “On a Turquoise Cloud”, and “T.G.G.T.” merits consideration by scholars and performers alike; these artistically complex melodies offer valuable insights into Ellington’s organic and collaborative compositional process. Although Ellington’s wordless melodies for the soprano voice have fallen on the periphery of discussions on twentieth-century American music, perhaps out of sheer obscurity, the need for alternative teaching and performance materials gives rise to a host of topics for further study regarding these pieces. Assimilating Ellington’s programmatic and mood pieces for the instrumentalized soprano voice into the canon of chamber repertoire opens a new arena of scholarly and artistic endeavor for the trained singer. Therefore, central to this study are the following considerations: context, pedagogical challenges (range, tessitura, vowels, phrase length, etc.) nature of accompaniment and instrumentation, form, and the nature of Ellington’s vocal writing as it pertains to the wordless obbligato and concert works featuring the wordless voice including, “Minnehaha,” “Transblucency,” “On A Turquoise Cloud,” and “T.G.T.T.” aka “Too Good To Title.” This study evaluates Ellington’s technique of casting the wordless female voice in unique musical contexts via musical analysis, as well as pedagogical and interpretive assessments of selected Ellington pieces,. The resultant amalgam of musical identities, both instrumental and vocal, fostered creative polyphony and epitomized the coined “Ellington Effect.” The following analysis centers on a chronological survey of Ellington’s wordless melodies performed and recorded by Adelaide Hall, Kay Davis, and Alice Babs. The goal of this project is to present a study in historical context and significance, style, device, and pedagogical/performance considerations of those works that employ the flexibility, technique, and aural training of the studied singer with instrumental jazz idioms in a cross-genre context.

Audition Technique: A Survival Guide (For College Undergraduate Students)

Kelleher, Meghan 10 May 2011 (has links)
Many great actors don’t work and many mediocre actors do. Why? The perfect monologue and great song isn’t enough to get you hired. Sadly, students are not prepared and equipped with the necessary skill set to take control of their careers. In this economic climate, the ability to audition could not be more imperative. In this thesis, readers will be introduced to the basics of audition technique as developed for Theatre majors at Virginia Commonwealth University as a precursor to their senior year. It will guide them through the first stage of their career. Furthermore, there are unspoken rules, etiquette, and untapped opportunities of which many young actors are simply unaware when auditioning. Through the exploration of auditioning as a technique and not just a means to an end, students will find confidence, understanding, and the tools to prepare them to be successful in gaining employment in the theatre.
