Liberalism, Hermeneutics, and the Other

Hao, Qiang 04 1900 (has links)

For hermeneutics, liberal universality—the belief that rights for being humans as such are universally true—is a sort of subjective universality. Subjectivity is just another way of saying that universality is historically situated, and whoever claims universality cannot objectify herself from her own history; accordingly, universality is not universality-as-the-thing-is (a sort of “objective” universality), but universality-for-person P -in-her-historical-situation, even if the claimer is totally unaware of the restrictions imposed by her own tradition and historicity.

Subjective universality reveals the fact that the content of universality is affected by the personal dimension of its claimer. That is, the claimer’s personal background, including culture, language, tradition, education, social-economical aspects, even gender and race, are reflected, consciously or unconsciously, explicitly or implicitly, directly or indirectly, in her view of what universality ought to be.

How to treat the other— a political and metaphysical category of existence that is radically different from oneself—reveals the subjective nature of liberal universality. In history, this subjectivity worked negatively, for liberals, to select and exclude some groups e.g. women, the propertyless, and the colonized subjects. But in light of our contemporary understanding of what is truly free and equal, this subjectivity can function positively to assure respect for the other and avoid producing new types of alienated other. The advocated liberal approach is a hermeneutic approach, which asserts the practices of being humble, dialogical, non-violent, and voluntarily self-dislocated, in dealing with the other.
/ Master of Philosophy (MA)

Aldo Rossi: From Modern to Post-Modern Architecture, 1960-1990

Vleck, Treena Marie 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the stylistic development of the Italian architect Aldo Rossi from Modern to Post-Modern design. A summary of the Modern architectural movement is presented along with an analysis of the developments in Post-Modern architecture since 1960. The influence of Italian culture on Rossi's career is discussed through a brief survey of Ancient Roman archetypal motifs and Italian architecture of the early 20th century. Several key buildings proposed or constructed by Rossi from 1960-1990 are discussed based on his concepts of analogy, typology, morphology and rationalism.

Zander, Niclas January 2007 (has links)

In this paper Mona Hatoums installation Corps étranger is discussed via a post structuralized method based on associative and semiotic comparisons with vanitas, a post-modern self-portrait, and as a representative for modern visual art. The analyze touches upon pornography, science fiction and the quest for scientific conquest in outer and inner space. Theoretical references are Foucault, Freud, Lacan, Barthes, Dolar, Said and Virilio. Hatoum makes the observer a voyageur with the aid of the latest medical technology, endoscope, which gives her the opportunity to make an introvert self-portrait when she films her own throat and rectum. But at the same time she makes the portrait of us all. I interpret this as a fictious science with postcolonial ideas, and the reference to science fiction is close at range. Hatoum takes the role as the other, the woman or the stranger and might flirt with Jülich interpretation of Corps étranger as a sign of the visual cultures colonisation of the human body’s inside, that is a conscious reference to sexuality, ethics and the search for knowledge and power.

Desafío docente: El alumno postmoderno

Alfaro Ramírez, Teresa 28 August 2014 (has links)
Societies progress: currently, a globalized and computer world, is a postmodern society. In it, the ways of transmitting and socializing culture have changed; new human beings have been developed postmodern individuals with very particular characteristics: they are our students. How to optimize the learning triad (student-teacher-knowledge)? It is not enough to know the contents and be a specialist in the field, it is essential to be aware of the current environment to analyze and understand the characteristics of our students, also called "sons of globalization" or "digital natives". Only then shall we know, also, our own reality as individuals and teachers. This paper seeks to analyze the characteristics of our students and reflect on our role as teachers in a complex and changing environment.

In this study, we sought to make an immanent analysis of the work, however without disregarding the ideological, political, historical and social aspects that permeate the romance and are of fundamental importance to the understanding of the fable. The analysis presents a theoretical-analytical procedure, in a way that the privileged theoretical aspects were applied, by aiming: to identify in the romance the characteristics that define it as a post-modern literature; to approach the hybridization of genders: prose and poetry, the polyphony of voices, and also the aspects of intertextuality and, of course, the strong political and social contents. The results obtained allow concluding that Fado Alexandrino cannot be characterized only as Romanesque prose nor framed in a predetermined structure. It is a complex construction in which the author uses features of hybridism, heteroglossy and interdiscursivity elements radiographed by Mikhail Bakhtin and by him denominated as prosaic practices that different uses of language make of discourse, offering them as manifestation of plurality. At last, we can affirm that Fado Alexandrino is a work that gives voice to characters that speak, discuss ideas and seek to reposition themselves in a country that attempted a transformation in ten years that has not occurred for five centuries / Esta dissertação pertence à área da literatura e crítica literária e trata, especificamente, da análise da prosa romanesca em Fado Alexandrino, de António Lobo Antunes.

Uma investigação sobre as teorias de cidade mundial, cidade global, cidade pós-moderna e sua relação com a cidade de São Paulo / An investigation on the theories of the world city, global city, post-modern city and its relation with the city of São Paulo

Sousa, Rosangela Silva 19 February 2009 (has links)
This dissertation investigates the international and national literature concerning the theories of world, global and post-modern city, highlighting its relations with São Paulo Metropolis. For that, as theoretical resource, it was used the bibliographical research. Thus, it points out that the concepts of world city and global city do not present significant differences, it has been used by the authors depending on the preference of each one. Yet, the concept of post-modern city has a more restricted utilization, if it was compared with the previous terms. Mostly in the international literature, the concept of post-modern city presents an inclination for cultural phenomena approaches in the society. However, in the national literature, such concept is used just a little and, when it appears, it relates more to a pattern of urban planning which prioritizes the needs of hegemonic actors. This way, it was verified that there are two main forms to apprehend the world/global city concept. One of these forms was denominated diagnostic form, constituting the result of new content forms investigation of the contemporary city. And the other apprehension was denominated paradigm strategic planning form, which is related with the model of city that should be followed to acquire competitiveness in the globalization. The strategic planning is the operationalization of this model. Finally, it is highlighted that great part of the national literature, includes in the Geographical Science, considers São Paulo Metropolis a world/global city, as well as in the international literature. In this sense, several authors highlight its historicalgeographical context, and they point to, this way, a phenomenon specificity: its a world/global city of the capitalisms semi periphery. The international literature, in general, also considers São Paulo a world/global city. However, in this last case, few studies have been dedicated to establish relations with São Paulo, since they concentrate, above all, in the analysis of their local realities.

O imaginário de Fernando Pessoa: da educação cindida à educação sentida / The imaginary of Fernando Pessoa: from the divided education to the sensible education

Almeida, Rogério de 10 November 2005 (has links)
The thesis The imaginary of Fernando Pessoa: from the divided education to the sensible education investigates the symbolic universe of the works of Fernando Pessoa, analising his tree most important heteronymous Alberto Caeiro, Álvaro de Campos and Ricardo Reis -, besides poems signed by himself. After procedure a mythcritics of the mentioned work, one argue about his relationship with the education and its ethics results and effects, in a perspective of a post-modern landscape. The referential basis was founded in Antropology of the Imaginary, of Gilbert Durant, counting with important contributions of Edgar Morin, Michel Maffesoli, Gaston Bachelard, Georges Gusdorf, Mircea Eliade and Joseph Cambell, among others, and look a new epistemologic position, with the notion of anthropologic journey, coincidentia oppositorum and sensitive reason, based in the plurality of meanings organized by the myth. The aim is to understand the Pessoas mitopoiesis, his decentralizing in heteronymous and the mythics substracts of his work, pointing out how his poetic creation is related with an education of the imaginary, that makes the reunion of knowledges divided by the modernity.

Paranoid Epistemologies: Essays on Thomas Pynchon and the Scene of Disappearance

Raguz, Christopher 01 January 2019 (has links)
The following five essays are connected by their reference to a scene – imagined by the author Thomas Pynchon. The disappearance of historical cause, the subject, and the human constitute this epistemological scene. Each essay can be read without logically building off of any other – yet they form a wider assemblage of interpretative theory. These are fragments capable of recombination in any order. They shun systematization but welcome kinship. Pynchon's fiction is the substrate underlying each. Abstract machines of theorists thinking on similar wavelengths are used as catalysts in an effort to force a reaction – an attempt to transmute the stories of paranoid schlemihls into yet more paranoid epistemologies. How do we understand the degree to which we are organized by whatever systematizes? How do we relate to whatever organizes our knowledge, our identities? What, exactly, is playing us? These are the anxieties these essays share with Pynchon's characters and formulate the questions driving their theory. Call it the Post-Modern, the Post-Human, or any other Post, Pynchon anticipated its event horizon half a century before its more obvious implications made themselves clear. If we have passed fully over this horizon, figuring out where we are and what's going on has become a question of survival, and Pynchon's anticipation of our contemporary scene have become increasingly salient. These essays offer paranoid epistemologies for the age of disappearance.

Amid, Shanis January 2007 (has links)

This study is based on interviews with six students from Stockholm that have shared their feelings/opinions about how they experience their identity as a student. The aim of this master’s thesis is to examine how the identity of students is constructed but also how the post modern society affects the life that the students are living. With a higher demand on education and responsibility of making the right decisions, the student’s main concern is not only her studies, but also the goal to succeed in her life. The result points out that the environment which the student lives in has an influence on how the identity develops. The identity has nothing to do with the actually fact that the student studies, but with how the student acts outside the university.
