Anotation in English The theme of my master's thesis "Inquisition and Protestants in New Spain (1536 - 1820) is the inquisition in New Spain, its functioning as an institution, its development and procedures with the main emphasis put on individual cases of judged Protestants. Firstly I describe the development of the inquisition in Europe with emphasis put on the Spanish inquisition. Afterwards I focus on inquisition as a judicial institution. Here I describe the whole judicial process from denunciation, order to appeal at the court, torture and final verdict. But the main emphasis of the thesis is put on the Protestants judged by the inquisition in New Spain. In these chapters, firstly I divide them by its nationalities. Then I analyse each nationality separately. I state the verdicts and punishments over the judged Protestants. Some cases, where we know some details, I examine with more details including the circumstances of the arrest, progress of the trial or even chat happened with the Protestant after his sentence had expired. Na História do Futuro, o jesuíta forma e transforma a narrativa condicionada ao Tribunal do Santo Ofício. Enquanto se defende das acusações, também redige sua narrativa, produzindo uma realidade paralela na qual acreditava, uma ficção profética, uma especulação (im)possível. Obviamente outros textos circundam a narrativa vieirina, como a Clavis Prophetarum e a Carta Esperanças de Portugal, este último pivô do processo e desencadeador, na retomada da escrita, da História do Futuro. Na outra margem do rio está o romancista contemporâneo António Lobo Antunes, em O Manual dos Inquisidores, que retoma a inquisição, não somente no título, mas, também, em sua forma narrativa. O romance é disposto por confissões e depoimentos e, desta forma, a ficção encontra a inquisição na pena do autor. Vieira e Lobo Antunes miram em vetores distintos, mas se aproximam do alvo partindo da inquisição à ficção. / Abstract: The association established between fiction and inquisition in António Vieira's narrative and António Lobo Antunes' novel, demonstrates a resemblance in their procedure, yet those authors are apart from each other for over four centuries. In História do Futuro, the priest forms and transforms the narrative under the Inquisition Tribunal. While he defends himself of accusations towards him, he also composed his narrative, producing a parallel reality which he truly believed, a prophetic fiction, and an unfeasible assumption. Clearly many other texts surrounded Vieira's production, such as Clavis Prophetarum and the letter Esperanças de Portugal, the last one had become the trial motive and trigger of História do Futuro start over. Quite the reverse it sets the contemporary novelist António Lobo Antunes, in The Inquisitors' Manual, which points toward the Inquisition, not only in its title, but besides, in its narrative arrangement. The novel is structured by confessions and statements. Thus Vieira and Lobo Antunes aimed at distinct object; nonetheless they come close to the target by setting off from the inquisition and the fiction. / Mestre

A Inquisição Moderna foi uma instituição criada pelos Estados Ibéricos e apoiada pela Igreja Católica no século XVI para investigar e punir indivíduos que não estivessem agindo de acordo com a moral religiosa. Agindo através de denúncias e segredos, o julgamento inquisitorial forjou heresias, apontando como principal inimigo o cristão-novo. Ao analisarmos o funcionamento do Tribunal do Santo Ofício, através de documentos inquisitoriais e trabalhos diversos publicados sobre o tema, percebemos o caráter indispensável que a instituição teve no sentido de restringir as liberdades individuais, em prol de uma ideia de uniformidade baseada numa verdade absoluta a fé católica. Em um período de tantas transformações como foi o da modernidade, a Inquisição se tornou uma das principais instituições de manutenção do Antigo Regime, assegurando o poder nas mãos do clero e da nobreza. / The Modern Inquisition was an institution created by the Iberian States and supported for Catholic Church in the XVI century to investigate and to punish individuals that were not acting in accordance with the moral religion. Acting through denunciations and secrets, the inquisitional judgment forged heresies, pointing the new-Christian as main enemy. When analyzing the functioning of the Court of the Holy Office, through inquisitional documents and several published works on the subject, we notice the indispensable character that the institution had in the direction to restrict the individual freedom in favor of an idea of uniformity based on an absolute truth the catholic faith. That one period of so many transformations, as it was the modern period, the Inquisition became one of the main institutions of maintenance of the Antique Regimen, assuring the power to the hands of the clergy and the nobility.

Esta tese trata da criação do roteiro cinematográfico O Padre Voador. Acompanha o roteiro a memória de sua escrita, dividida em começo e meio. O começo narra o princípio da idéia e o envolvimento com a história de Bartolomeu Lourenço de Gusmão, em minha graduação na Letras; o início da pesquisa sobre o personagem e a escritura do argumento já no mestrado da mesma FFLCH-USP. No meio houve a possibilidade de sonhar com a realização do filme, daí a entrada no doutorado desta Escola de Comunicações e Artes sob a orientação do professor doutor Ismail Xavier, e o desenvolvimento da pesquisa sobre a época de Bartolomeu de Gusmão no Departamento de História. Do meio consta ainda o primeiro tratamento, submetido à atenciosa leitura dos professores doutores Flávio Aguiar e Roberto Moreira, no Exame de Qualificação. O fim é o segundo tratamento do roteiro, onde procurei absorver os valiosos pareceres dos professores e as fundamentais opiniões do orientador. / This term paper is about the creation of the screenplay O Padre Voador. Along with the screenplay we present the process of writing the script, divided into beginning and middle sections. The beginning narrates the idea and the involvement with the story of Bartolomeu Lourenço de Gusmão, which I developed as a graduate student in Languages Arts. I completed the first steps of character development and the writing of the plot for my Masters Degree at FFLCH-USP. The middle section addresses the realization that my dream of producing the film could be true. Therefore I enrolled in the doctorate program at this Escola de Comunicações e Artes under the guidance of Professor Ismail Xavier. The historical study of the century in which Bartolomeu lived was made possible with the aid of the History Department. In the middle section we also find the first version of the screenplay, submitted to Professors Flavio Aguiar and Roberto Moreira during the qualifying exam. The end consists of the second version of the screenplay, where I tried to incorporate the professors\' valuable suggestions and the fundamental view of the advisor.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e TecnolÃgico / AtravÃs da anÃlise de alguns casos de bigamia, que foram alvos da aÃÃo inquisitorial, este estudo envereda pelas relaÃÃes e os arranjos sociais constituÃdos na antiga capitania do Siarà grande, no sÃculo XVIII, atravessadas pelos temas da mobilidade da populaÃÃo, da transitoriedade propÃcia aos SertÃes, do significado do casamento, das mudanÃas de identidades e de profissÃes, alÃm de aspectos circunscritos à atuaÃÃo da igreja na capitania. Busca-se entender o significado do sacramento casamento catÃlico para os sujeitos histÃricos no contexto colonial, bem como as motivaÃÃes e as estratÃgias, utilizadas para se contrair um segundo casamento em âface de Igrejaâ, sendo a primeira esposa ainda viva, alÃm de se buscar compreender a dinÃmica em torno da atuaÃÃo da Igreja CatÃlica, em seus mÃltiplos organismos de vigilÃncia e de controle da populaÃÃo. Conclui-se que o estudo da prÃtica da bigamia possibilita a compreensÃo dos valores em torno do casamento tanto para os sujeitos que se apropriavam e o ressignificavam, como para as instituiÃÃes de controle. / The objective of this text is made a analysis of some bigame relationships, this cases were target of inquisitorial activity, this paper have the purpose to study the relationships and social interactives in the Siarà of the XVIII century, in this society we have important themes like the high mobility of the people, the personal significancy of the marriage , the change of identity and profession, beloynd the acting of the church. In this text we want to understand how the people seen the marriage, what their motivations and strategies to marry for the second time, contradicting the Catholic Church, once the first wife, in some cases was alive. Others objectives of this study are understand how the Catholic Church did the analysis of this bigame cases acting in the population control. The documental basis os this study it is made of Inquisitorial Processes, this documents is in the Tombo Tower Archive, Inquisitorial Ordinance, First Archbishopric Constitutions of Bahia, Chapters of the Visitors Book of the Tombo of the cities of Russas and Arneiroz and Ordinations of the Kingdom. Our conclusion is that the study of bigame cases is possible understand the marriage values to the people and to the control institutions.

This paper endeavors to examine the mechanisms by which the crown of France was able to subsume the region of Languedoc in the wake of the Albigensian Crusade in the thirteenth century. The systematic use of Catholic doctrine and an inquisition run by the Dominican Order of Preachers allowed France to dominate the populace of the region and destroy any indigenous social, economic, and political structures.
