O diálogo intermidiático entre A sociedade do anel e The lord of the rings online (lotro) : aspectos de remidiação, meia-realidade, estrutura e ficção interativa

Martinez, Lis Yana de Lima January 2017 (has links)
This M.A. thesis analyses the intermediatic dialogue established between The Fellowship of the Ring, a book written by Professor John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892 - 1973), and The Lord of the Rings Online (Lotro), a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-playing Game. Here, I intend to explain important aspects for the construction of this dialogue such as how it is created and how it has been articulating itself, focusing, according to Comparative Literature Studies’, on the remediation process and on aspects such as structure, half-reality and interactive fiction, characteristic of the interaction between both media. John R. R. Tolkien’s book has gone through several complex processes of (re)mediation, being The Lord of the Rings Online one of them. The game features the part of Middle-Earth that is told in the first two volumes of The Lord of the Rings. Lotro guides its players through missions called epic quests, which follow the nine members of the fellowship of the ring to the great battles at Mordor. The analysis proposed starts from the problematic issue of classifying what a medium is (MCLUHAN, 2013), the way through which media relate to one another and the context in which they are created (BOLTER; GRUSIN, 2000), adding the theoretical postulates of videogames. It is a comparative analysis that includes, as an example of the appropriate differences in structural articulations and other aspects, the passage (VAN TIEGHEM, 1931) from literature into videogame as a successful exchange that values both media, while promoting new experiences to the reader.

the urban pilgrims in Qoyllurit’i and the mimetic miniature game / Los peregrinos urbanos en Qoyllurit’i y el juego mimético de miniaturas

Stensrud, Astrid B. 25 September 2017 (has links)
This article is about the pilgrims from Cusco city who participate in the miniature game in the sanctuary of Qoyllurit’i. Starting with a description of the urban socioeconomic context and the Andean ontology, this text intends to explore how we may understand the game, the meaning of the miniatures, and the importance of the pilgrimage in the contemporary urban context. A strong motivation for going to Qoyllurit’i is to empower the desires of life and ensure economic prosperity for the future through reciprocal relations with places and objects. In these relations, values like respect and faith are important. Using the analytical concepts «virtuality» and «mimesis», the article analyzes the game as a form of communication based in an ontology in which there are no distinctions between nature-culture, signifier-signified, and matter-spirit. Furthermore, it shows that indigenous religious practices are cultural and material processes which are constantly recreated in continuous and reciprocal relations between the rural and the urban. The article is based on two years and two months of ethnographic fieldwork (2001-2002, 200-2007, 2008) in a neighborhood in Cusco city and in three pilgrimages to Qoyllurit’i (2002, 2007, 2008).

Racial Issues in Middle-Earth : A Postcolonial Perspective on J.R.R Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings / Rasproblem i Midgård : Ett Postkolonialistiskt Perspektiv på J.R.R Tolkiens Sagan om Ringen

Fahlén, Alexander January 2016 (has links)
This essay focuses on J.R.R Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, how the different races in the text are portrayed and how they interact with each other. The essay uses postcolonial theories, mainly “Orientalism” and “Otherness”, to prove traces of racism in the text. It focuses on the text and what can be found in the characters opinions of each other. The aim of this essay is to prove that in The Lord of the Rings there is an underlying story of racial issues between the different races of Middle-Earth and that these issues can be described as racism.  The colonial themes of the text can mostly be found in the geographical descriptions, the colour of skin and the stereotypical descriptions of different races within the text. The stereotypical descriptions are probably sprung from the fact that J.R.R Tolkien grew up towards the end of the big Imperialist era of 19th century Europe and the similarities and descriptions of foreign cultures existing in the real world can be traced throughout the text.  The Lord of the Rings contains themes with racial issues and this can be described as racism, even though it is not possible to say that The Lord of the Rings is a racist text as whole.

Brněnské brownfieldy u řeky Svitavy / Brno brownfields by the Svitava river

Muzikář, Vladimír January 2018 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with urban studies on the territory of Svitavy river in Brno-Husovice. Part of the solved territory is defined as a brownfield - specifically, it is a former Zetor site. New backbone roads are proposed in the defined area, new residential complexes that integrate the area into the surrounding area. In the north of the proposed area, I propose the Park & Ride Park House at the large city ring road in Brno. The proposal also includes the creation of recreational areas - near the embankment, a city park is set up near the Provazníkova road. An interesting feature is the creation of a public space shielded from traffic.

The Flamekeeper : The Confessional Purgation of the Soul in the Poetry of Robert Lowell

Jurison, Ryan January 2020 (has links)
This essay is a critical textual analysis of the poetry of Robert Lowell with focus on religious symbolism used in his work, and the Catholic theology which informed it. This results in a new, contrasting interpretation to the conventional view that he had abandoned his religious focus by mid-career, while accounting for his own assessment that he had not. Insights gained through this analysis, combined with those relating to Lowell’s personal history, reframe his confessional poetry while bolstering this claim.  Through this study, poems selected from Lord Weary’s Castle, The Mills of the Kavanaughs, Life Studies and For the Union Dead are reinterpreted in order to explore the consequences of what Lowell could have intended with this stylistic modification, and discover the religiosity that he claimed was hidden. Lowell’s confessional poetry up until 1964 is examined and recast as the anguished wails of a Catholic soul in Purgatory. This fresh approach to one of America’s finest twentieth-century poets provides a novel foundation for the reinterpretation of the entirety of Lowell’s professional oeuvre.

Flüchtig und finster

Hobe, Bernd, Schröder, Gesine 24 January 2013 (has links)

The unsinkable progressivism : An investigation of the Titanic as a symbol for the idea of progressivism.

Helmersson, Markus January 2020 (has links)
In this investigation I will go to the bottom of the idea of progressivism by using one of the symbols of its consequences: The Titanic disaster. The purpose is to analyze the claims of Walter Lord, comparing his story with the historical development of the 1900’s and Thomas S. Kuhns theory of paradigm shifts. According to Lord the Titanic disaster changed humans’ view on the world and their place in it, leading to a paradigm shift. By using the method of hermeneutics and critical discourse analysis I will show that Lords claims, depending on the perspective, are somewhat exaggerated. Instead Titanic would become a powerful symbol for the critics of the current paradigm, which is that of progressivism. Even if the Titanic disaster led to some changes, the idea of progressivism has been able to modify and adapt itself, reproducing the current societal paradigm of progressivism.

Andělé v Bibli. Role andělů v biblických textech / Angels in the Bible. The Role of Angels in biblical texts

Kopřivová, Marie January 2011 (has links)
The Diploma thesis Angels in the Bible. The role of angels in biblical texts tries to describe the role of angels in the Bible based on the contexts containing the term angel. Then it analyzes and briefly characterizes individual texts of the Old and New Testament in which the term angel occures. With the help of this analysis it is possible to observe what role did the angels serve: they announced the birth of a son, God's election, God's commands, they become the life savers, leaders and protectors of the Israel nation and executors of God's punishment. An angel - interpreter acts in the apocalyptic texts. In the New Testament, angels also announce the birth of Jesus and John the Baptist, announce the God's will to people, they announce the resurrection and protect the church similarly to Israel. The most angels figure in the Book of Revelation and they play all roles known from apocalyptic literature: angel - interpreter, angel - guardian, as well as angels who participate on the heavenly council and effect the judgement according to the God's commands.
