Interaktivt Innehåll och Konvergenskultur : En diskursiv fallstudie av Black Mirror: Bandersnatch / Interactive Content and Convergence CultureTunney, Ruth January 2019 (has links)
As illustrated by the Netflix special Bandersnatch as a cultural phenomenon, the purpose of this study was to analyze how "new" storytelling forms exist in today's convergence culture. This was done by a discursive case study about TV-critics' reception of Bandersnatch, along with smaller comparative discourses covering both relatively traditional film and TV organizations within the media industry, as well as an online forum. Therefore, it was demonstrated how the convergence culture expanded the expression of interactive content. Themes inspired by the reviews included the categorization of Bandersnatch as a media product. The technological aspects of interactive elements were furthermore used in the analysis of the result. Moreover, this was discussed in relation to theories of design and convergence culture. Finally, the results of the study indicated that Netflix's Bandersnatch was compared to both analogue and digital media products. The film's technological aspects were considered to detract from the storytelling experience of a movie, but rather it generated the type of entertainment found in a video game. An insecurity of the future of film as an artform and a dilution of traditional ownership roles also emerged, as the viewer's control continued to be discussed, not only in relation to Bandersnatch, but also to the overall interactive and participatory digital media landscape. / Belyst av Netflix-specialaren Bandersnatch som ett kulturellt fenomen var syftet med denna studie att analysera hur "nya" berättarformer existerar i dagens konvergenskultur. Detta gjordes genom en diskursiv fallstudie om TV-recensenters mottagande av Bandersnatch, ihop med mindre jämförande diskurser som behandlade relativt traditionella film- och TV-organisationer inom mediebranschen samt ett onlineforum. Därmed påvisades också hur konvergenskulturen vidgade uttrycket av interaktivt innehåll. Teman inspirerade av recensionerna inkluderade exempelvis kategoriseringen av Bandersnatch som medieprodukt. De teknologiska aspekterna av interaktiva element användes vidare i analysen av resultaten. Ytterligare diskuterades detta i relation till teorier om design och konvergenskultur. Slutligen indikerade studien att Netflix Bandersnatch jämfördes med både analoga och digitalamedieprodukter. Filmens teknologiska aspekter ansågs förminska berättarupplevelsen som film, men skapade snarare en typ av nöje som återfanns i TV-spel. En osäkerhet om framtiden av film som en konstform uppdagades också, medan tittarens kontroll fortsatte att diskuteras, inte bara i relation till Bandersnatch, utan också i förhållande till helheten av det interaktiva och deltagande digitala medier-landskapet.

Surge principalmente como una respuesta a la incapacidad de proporcionar experiencias únicas durante el proceso de compra mediante el uso de diversos dispositivos. Debido a esto, se analizaron soluciones de asistente virtual similares orientadas a proporcionar recomendaciones de vestimenta para poder proporcionar un software que podría dar una sugerencia más personalizada para los usuarios basándose en sus características físicas. La validación del modelo se realizará a través de la experiencia de un grupo de usuarios en el momento del uso del asistente virtual y expertos en el área de evaluación de moda. / This article is about the problematic and development of a fashion virtual assistant proposed by using a Kinect v2 camera and image processing, for fashion retail stores. It comes up mainly as a response to the inability of providing unique experiences during the shopping process through the use of diverse devices. Because of this, similar virtual assistant solutions oriented to provide clothing recommendations were analysed to be able to provide a software that could give a more personalized suggestion for the users basing in their physical characteristics. The model validation will be done through the experience of a group of users at the moment of use of the virtual assistant and experts in the fashion assessment area. / Trabajo de investigación

This thesis solves design of functional device that will be able to automatically positioning back view mirrors according to the positio of driver face. Measuring position of the face provides stereovision of two webacams. The device is based on a computer Raspberry Pi 2 with designed expansion board. The created prototype can follow set view int the mirror with accuracy up to 7 cm (horizontally up to 5cm) in level of rear corner of a car. The results of this project validate design of automatic positioning mirror and it can be basis for specific implementations of the device in car.

Title: Cerebral projection of haptic contact via sLORETA imaging Objectives: The aim of this work is to evaluate changes in intracerebral source activity via sLORETA imaging during haptic stimulation of hands, while this contact is modified by a mirror illusion in comparison to calm state with open eyes. The work seeks to specify localization of such activity. Methods: Ten healthy volunteers aged 23-42 participated in the experiment. The electrical brain activity was detected with scalp EEG. The experiment was divided in 5 phases. First we measured the brain activity during calm state with open and with closed eyes, each for 5 minutes. Afterwards the subjects were seated at a table with a mirror occluding their right hand and reflecting their left hand. The brain activity was than recorded during 4 modifications of the experiment in duration of 2 minutes each. The first modification contained symmetrical haptic contact on both hands, modification 2 involved stimulation on the left hand only, during modification 3 the stimulus was applied on the right hand only and modification 4 had no tactile stimulus on neither side. The order of modifications for each individual was randomized. The EEG data were converted into sLORETA program, which allows to localize the source of the recorded brain activity...

In[bodying] the other : performing the digital other as a component of self through real-time video performanceMoore, Lorna January 2014 (has links)
Through practice-led research this thesis will explore the phenomenology of interactions between the digital 'other', and the lived experience of the subject through real-time video performance practice. It challenges the assumption that the digital video image is merely or simply other to the subject and aims to re-position the 'other' as an integral part of self where we perform the other. It does this by drawing on Jacques Lacan's Mirror Stage and claims that through digital performance we can suspend divisions between the self and the digital other. By being immersed within the real-time video image the thesis argues we re-enter the Mirror Stage and become captivated within the digital counterpart. Through a disruption in the proprioception of the body there is a crossover of the actual self and digital other which are suspended in each other. Through the use of Head Mounted Display Systems in the work In[bodi]lmental it is claimed that the actual body can In[body] the other subject as part of self. The thesis argues that the digital other is a component of self mediated through new digital technologies to be understood as an augmented self. Therefore it is through an In[bodied] Mirror Stage we momentarily access the loss of the Lacanian real encountered through the uncanny experience. This investigation has been conducted in the form of four digital performance projects defined as Inter-Reactive Explorations I-REs (i-iv).The I-REs were subjected to critical analysis and reflection using a variety of disciplines including: psychoanalysis, philosophy, the study of perception, phenomenology, and ethnography. The methodological framework for this research has been coined 'auto-ethnophenomenology'; a mixed-method approach utilizing auto-ethnography and the phenomenological lived experiences of informants. This model has enabled both the 'I' of the researcher and the other to be equally represented from both first person and third person perspectives. The symbiotic relationship between the theory and the practice is exemplified through the phenomenology of interactions between the digital 'other', and the lived experience of the subjects supported by the writings of Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Drew Leder and Rane Willerslev.

The mirror broken anew : the manuscript evidence for opposition to Marguerite Porete's Latin 'Mirror of simple souls' in the later Middle AgesTrombley, Justine Lida January 2015 (has links)
This thesis examines three manuscripts which demonstrate negative attitudes towards the Latin translation of the fourteenth-century Old French mystical work The Mirror of Simple Souls, written by Marguerite Porete. Marguerite was burned at the stake for heresy in Paris in 1310, and her Mirror was also condemned and meant to be destroyed. The Mirror survived inquisitorial efforts to exterminate it, was translated into Italian, Middle English, and Latin, and became accepted and valued by many religious circles in the later fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. Examination of the Latin manuscripts, however, demonstrates that there was also a continuing trend of opposition towards and condemnation of the Mirror, even after its original Parisian condemnation was forgotten. This level of opposition is not seen in the Mirror's other vernacular circulations, making the Latin tradition unique in the amount of censure it received. This demonstrates a multi-faceted tradition in the Mirror's circulation, showing that the Mirror, rather than entering definitively into either the realm of orthodoxy or heresy, instead had a place in both, occupying a grey area between the two. This thesis provides new and detailed information on manuscripts which have never been studied in their own right by Mirror scholars, and examines these codices' implications both for the circulation of the Latin tradition and for the history of the Mirror's post-condemnation circulation as a whole.

Saddle point techniques in convex composite and error-in-measurement optimizationHe, Niao 07 January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation aims to develop efficient algorithms with improved scalability and stability properties for large-scale optimization and optimization under uncertainty, and to bridge some of the gaps between modern optimization theories and recent applications emerging in the Big Data environment. To this end, the dissertation is dedicated to two important subjects -- i) Large-scale Convex Composite Optimization and ii) Error-in-Measurement Optimization. In spite of the different natures of these two topics, the common denominator, to be presented, lies in their accommodation for systematic use of saddle point techniques for mathematical modeling and numerical processing. The main body can be split into three parts.
In the first part, we consider a broad class of variational inequalities with composite structures, allowing to cover the saddle point/variational analogies of the classical convex composite minimization (i.e. summation of a smooth convex function and a simple nonsmooth convex function). We develop novel composite versions of the state-of-the-art Mirror Descent and Mirror Prox algorithms aimed at solving such type of problems. We demonstrate that the algorithms inherit the favorable efficiency estimate of their prototypes when solving structured variational inequalities. Moreover, we develop several variants of the composite Mirror Prox algorithm along with their corresponding complexity bounds, allowing the algorithm to handle the case of imprecise prox mapping as well as the case when the operator is represented by an unbiased stochastic oracle.
In the second part, we investigate four general types of large-scale convex composite optimization problems, including (a) multi-term composite minimization, (b) linearly constrained composite minimization, (c) norm-regularized nonsmooth minimization, and (d) maximum likelihood Poisson imaging. We demonstrate that the composite Mirror Prox, when integrated with saddle point techniques and other algorithmic tools, can solve all these optimization problems with the best known so far rates of convergences. Our main related contributions are as follows. Firstly, regards to problems of type (a), we develop an optimal algorithm by integrating the composite Mirror Prox with a saddle point reformulation based on exact penalty. Secondly, regards to problems of type (b), we develop a novel algorithm reducing the problem to solving a ``small series'' of saddle point subproblems and achieving an optimal, up to log factors, complexity bound. Thirdly, regards to problems of type (c), we develop a Semi-Proximal Mirror-Prox algorithm by leveraging the saddle point representation and linear minimization over problems' domain and attain optimality both in the numbers of calls to the first order oracle representing the objective and calls to the linear minimization oracle representing problem's domain. Lastly, regards to problem (d), we show that the composite Mirror Prox when applied to the saddle point reformulation circumvents the difficulty with non-Lipschitz continuity of the objective and exhibits better convergence rate than the typical rate for nonsmooth optimization. We conduct extensive numerical experiments and illustrate the practical potential of our algorithms in a wide spectrum of applications in machine learning and image processing.
In the third part, we examine error-in-measurement optimization, referring to decision-making problems with data subject to measurement errors; such problems arise naturally in a number of important applications, such as privacy learning, signal processing, and portfolio selection. Due to the postulated observation scheme and specific structure of the problem, straightforward application of standard stochastic optimization techniques such as Stochastic Approximation (SA) and Sample Average Approximation (SAA) are out of question. Our goal is to develop computationally efficient and, hopefully, not too conservative data-driven techniques applicable to a broad scope of problems and allowing for theoretical performance guarantees. We present two such approaches -- one depending on a fully algorithmic calculus of saddle point representations of convex-concave functions and the other depending on a general approximation scheme of convex stochastic programming. Both approaches allow us to convert the problem of interests to a form amenable for SA or SAA. The latter developments are primarily focused on two important applications -- affine signal processing and indirect support vector machines.

Active Reflective Components for Adaptive Optical Zoom SystemsJungwirth, Matthew Edward Lewis January 2012 (has links)
This dissertation presents the theoretical and experimental exploration of active reflective components specifically for large-aperture adaptive optical zoom systems. An active reflective component can change its focal length by physically deforming its reflecting surface. Adaptive optical zoom (AOZ) utilizes active components in order to change magnification and achieve optical zoom, as opposed to traditional zooming systems that move elements along the optical axis. AOZ systems are theoretically examined using a novel optical design theory that enables a full-scale tradespace analysis, where optical design begins from a broad perspective and optimizes to a particular system. The theory applies existing strategies for telescope design and aberration simulation to AOZ, culminating in the design of a Cassegrain objective with a 3.3X zoom ratio and a 375mm entrance aperture. AOZ systems are experimentally examined with the development of a large-aperture active mirror constructed of a composite material called carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP). The active CFRP mirror uses a novel actuation method to change radius of curvature, where actuators press against two annular rings placed on the mirror's back. This method enables the radius of curvature to increase from 2000mm to 2010mm. Closed-loop control maintains good optical performance of 1.05 waves peak-to-valley (with respect to a HeNe laser) when the active CFRP mirror is used in conjunction with a commercial deformable mirror.

Performance Characterization of Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) Corner Turning and Multimode Interference DevicesZheng, Qi 05 September 2012 (has links)
Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology has become increasingly attractive because of the strong light confinement, which significantly reduces the footprint of the photonic components, and the possibility of monolithically integrating advanced photonic waveguide circuits with complex electronic circuits, which may reduce the cost of photonic integrated circuits by mass production. This thesis is dedicated to numerical simulation and experimental performance measurement of passive SOI waveguide devices. The thesis consists of two main parts. In the first part, SOI curved waveguide and corner turning mirror are studied. Propagation losses of the SOI waveguide devices are accurately measured using a Fabry-Perot interference method. Our measurements verify that the SOI corner turning mirror structures can not only significantly reduce the footprint size, but also reduce the access loss by replacing the curved sections in any SOI planar lightwave circuit systems. In the second part, an optical 90o hybrid based on 4 × 4 multimode interference (MMI) coupler is studied. Its quadrature phase behavior is verified by both numerical simulations and experimental measurements.

The effect of dietary chromium (III) on growth and carbohydrate utilization in mirror and common carp (Cyprinus carpio) LAhmed, Arafat R. January 2012 (has links)
The aim of feed formulation in aquaculture is to supply a suitable diet that provides nutritional requirements at relatively low cost. Carbohydrates are the most economic energy source for animals compared to protein and lipid; however, fish have limited capacity for dietary carbohydrate utilization. Trivalent chromium is an essential micronutrient for carbohydrate metabolism in vertebrates. The primary objective of this thesis was to enhance understanding of the effects of organic and inorganic forms of Cr on carbohydrate utilization, growth performance, gene expression and activity of specific key liver enzymes in carp Cyprinus carpio. In addition, effects of dietary Cr on body composition, Cr tissue content, blood cells DNA damage, and tissue histopathology (liver and gut) were evaluated. The first experiment (Chapter 3) tested levels of dietary Cr (0, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 mg Cr kg-1 as Cr chloride) to determine Cr requirement; the second experiment (Chapter 4) compared bioavailability of different forms of Cr (Cr chloride, Cr picolinate, and Cr yeast); and the third experiment (Chapter 5) evaluated different levels of Cr yeast (0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg Cr kg-1) on utilization of a starch or dextrin-based diet. A Cr supplementation of 0.5 mg Cr kg-1 (regardless of form of Cr) produced highest growth performance; whereas 2.0 mg Cr kg-1 did not differ from control. The 0.5 mg Cr kg-1 also enabled carp to utilize complex carbohydrates (e.g., starch) and did not affect final body composition. Only 2.0 mg Cr kg-1 caused DNA damage in blood cells and tissue damage (liver and gut histopathology). Cr content in whole body increased with dietary Cr, but Cr did not affect hexokinase gene expression. Overall, results indicate that Cr can improve growth performance of carp and that Cr supplementation can enhance utilization of carbohydrates in fish feed.
