Observation inflation and self-action inflation : investigation of source memory errors as a result of action observation and action performance

Mitrenga, Kaja Julia January 2015 (has links)
This thesis investigates two source memory errors: observation inflation, where observed actions are misremembered as being performed; and self-action inflation in which self-performed actions are misremembered as having been performed by somebody else. It has been proposed that these inflations occur because of overlapping brain activity during observation and performance. This has been attributed to mirror neurone activity. To test this, observation and self-action inflations are investigated for different types of actions (meaningful, meaningless and communicative) known to evoke different mirror neurone activity. Different age groups (young adult, and elderly) were studied as were the effects of relative ethnicity between observer and performer. The Remember-Know-Guess paradigm was used. This showed that people make inflations with high qualitative details and confidence. As anticipated, elderly participants made significantly more observation inflations than young adults. Across both age groups, significantly more inflations occurred for communicative and meaningful actions than for meaningless actions supporting the idea that mirror neurones may be involved in formation of inflations. However when the effects of relative ethnicity were included in the paradigm it was found that significantly more observation inflations were formed after observing different ethnicity actors. It has been hypothesised that if mirror neurone involvement is involved in observation inflations then the highest number of inflations are expected for the same ethnicity condition because of the overlap between participant and performer. This thesis therefore suggests a less simplistic explanation of the underlying mechanisms responsible for these types of memory error.

M.N. and the Yorkshire Circle: The Motivation Behind the Translation of the Mirouer des Simples Ames in Fourteenth-Century England

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: In 1999, Geneviève Hasenohr announced the discovery of a fragment of Marguerite Porete's Mirouer des Simples Ames, a work condemned by the Church at the University of Paris in 1310, hidden in a manuscript at the Bibliothèque municipale in Valenciennes. The fragment corresponds with roughly two chapters in the only extant French version of the manuscript (Chantilly, Musée Condé MS F XIV 26), and when compared with other editions of the Mirouer, it appears to be composed in what might have been Marguerite Porete's native dialect. The discovery changed scholars' perceptions of the weight of the various versions and translations - the Chantilly manuscript had been used previously to settle any questions of discrepancy, but now it appears that the Continental Latin and Middle English translations should be the arbiters. This discovery has elevated the Middle English editions, and has made the question of the translator's identity - he is known only by his initials M.N. - and background more imperative to an understanding of why a work with such a dubious history would be translated and harbored by English Carthusians in the century that followed its condemnation. The only candidate suggested for translator of the Mirouer has been Michael Northburgh (d. 1361), the Bishop of London and co-founder of the London Charterhouse, where two of the three remaining copies of the translation were once owned, but the language of the text and Northburgh's own position and interests do not fit this suggestion. My argument is that the content of the book, the method of its translation, its selection as a work for a Latin-illiterate audience, all fit within the interests of a circle of writers based in Yorkshire at the end of the fourteenth century. By beginning among the Yorkshire circle, and widening the search to include writers with a non-traditional contemplative audience, one that exists outside of the cloister - writers like Walter Hilton, the anonymous authors of the Cloud of Unknowing and the Chastising of God's Children, and Nicholas Love - we may have a better chance of locating and understanding the motives of the Middle English translator of the Mirouer. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. English 2011

Alterações hemodinâmicas encefálicas no sistema de neurônios-espelho associados à imitação: um estudo envolvendo imageamento funcional por ressonância magnética / Imitation-related encephalic hemodynamic changes in the mirror neurons system: a study involving functional magnetic ressonance imaging

Renata Pereira Lima 27 September 2011 (has links)
Além disso, a ativação do sistema de neurônios-espelho pode ser alterada dependendo do contexto em que a ação está inserida / Mirror neurons are activated both during action execution and during observation of this same action performed by another person. As they seem to integrate observation and action, mirror neurons have been the focus of studies on how humans understand the other and to what extent is able to share experiences. This integration includes an \"internal representation\" that involves the same neural structures involved in the execution of an observed action and has been suggested as a fundamental part of the facilitation of learning by imitation. This study aimed, besides investigating the role of the mirror neuron system in imitative behavior, investigating how unknown motor actions are recognized and incorporated into the repertoire after practice in the current context of motor mirror neurons. For this, 20 volunteers were trained to perform tasks involving musical chords in imitation context. Our results show that the mirror neuron system has a critical role during the observation of an action in order to imitate it. Moreover, activation of mirror neuron system may be altered depending on the context in which the action is inserted

A review of astronomical science with visible light adaptive optics

Close, Laird M. 26 July 2016 (has links)
We review astronomical results in the visible (lambda<1 mu m) with adaptive optics. Other than a brief period in the early 1990s, there has been little (<1 paper/yr) night-time astronomical science published with AO in the visible from 2000-2013 (outside of the solar or Space Surveillance Astronomy communities where visible AO is the norm, but not the topic of this invited review). However, since mid-2013 there has been a rapid increase visible AO with over 50 refereed science papers published in just similar to 2.5 years (visible AO is experiencing a rapid growth rate very similar to that of NIR AO science from 1997-2000; Close 2000). Currently the most productive small (D < 2 m) visible light AO telescope is the UV-LGS Robo-AO system (Baranec, et al. 2016) on the robotic Palomar D=1.5 m telescope (currently relocated to the Kitt Peak 1.8m; Salama et al. 2016). Robo-AO uniquely offers the ability to target >15 objects/hr, which has enabled large (>3000 discrete targets) companion star surveys and has resulted in 23 refereed science publications. The most productive large telescope visible AO system is the D=6.5m Magellan telescope AO system (MagAO). MagAO is an advanced Adaptive Secondary Mirror (ASM) AO system at the Magellan 6.5m in Chile (Morzinski et al. 2016). This ASM secondary has 585 actuators with < 1 msec response times (0.7 ms typically). MagAO utilizes a 1 kHz pyramid wavefront sensor. The relatively small actuator pitch (similar to 22 cm/subap) allows moderate Strehls to be obtained in the visible (0.63-1.05 microns). Long exposures (60s) achieve <30mas resolutions, 30% Strehls at 0.62 microns (r') with the VisAO camera in 0.5" seeing with bright R <= 9 mag stars. These capabilities have led to over 22 MagAO refereed science publications in the visible. The largest (D=8m) telescope to achieve regular visible AO science is SPHERE/ZIMPOL. ZIMPOL is a polarimeter fed by the similar to 1.2 kHz SPHERE ExAO system (Fusco et al. 2016). ZIMPOL's ability to differentiate scattered polarized light from starlight allows the sensitive detection of circumstellar disks, stellar surfaces, and envelopes of evolved AGB stars. Here we review the key steps to having good performance in the visible and review the exciting new AO visible science opportunities and science results in the fields of: exoplanet detection; circumstellar and protoplanetary disks; young stars; AGB stars; emission line jets; and stellar surfaces. The recent rapid increase in the scientific publications and power of visible AO is due to the maturity of the next-generation of AO systems and our new ability probe circumstellar regions with very high (10-30 mas) spatial resolutions that would otherwise require much larger (> 10m) diameter telescopes in the infrared.

An Investigation of the Basis of the Strength-Based Criterion-Shift

Olchowski, James E 29 August 2014 (has links)
In recognition memory, participants often fail to change their criterion for making a “studied” response from one trial to the next based on learning strength, even when they are given obvious cues to identify each test item as studied often (“strong”) or studied a single time (“weak”) (e.g., Stretch & Wixted, 1998). In three experiments we tested the hypothesis that participants produce robust item-by-item shifts only when responding did not involve significant response interference (Simon, Acosta, Mewaldt, & Speidel, 1976). In our three experiments, participants studied lists of words studied once (weak) or five times (strong). In Experiment 1, both strong and weak words appeared at test under the questions “Was this studied at all?” or “Was this studied five times?” Participants were randomly assigned to conditions using two keys to respond “yes” or “no”, or using four keys with one set of “yes” and “no” per question. Four-key participants were expected to shift their criteria while 2-key participants could not due to response interference, though results showed that both conditions were capable of criterion-shifting. In Experiment 2 test items appeared on either the left or the right side of the screen; only strong words appeared on the right and only weak words on the left. Participants went through one study-test cycle with four response keys, and one with two. Regardless of the testing conditions, participants did not shift their criteria in the 2-key condition while participants in the 4-key condition did shift their criteria. Finally, Experiment 3 fully crossed 2 or 4 key conditions with blocked or unblocked presentation of test items. Previous experiments have found both number of response keys and blocking of presentations to have an effect on ability to criterion-shift (Hicks & Starns, 2014; Starns & Olchowski, submitted; Verde & Rotello, 2007). Experiment 3 confirmed that number of response keys has a significant effect on criterion-shifting and that it is separate from any effect of blocking. All three experiments suggest that response interference is not the driving force behind criterion-shifting. A new explanation is proposed.

Průhledem zpět / Seeing Through and Back

Šindelková, Pavla Unknown Date (has links)
The aim of my work is to comment on the issue of narcissism, which is marked as an epidemic of our time. Narcissism is mostly psychological phenomenon and its generalization to society is difficult. In my preparatory studies on this topic within sociology, I could not find any solution, that would offer a change of position. In my attempt to achieve this, I went back to the original myth.

EEG analýza chůze na nestabilním povrchu / EEG analysis of gait on an unstable surface

Hons, Pavel January 2020 (has links)
1 Abstract Title: EEG analysis of gait on an unstable surface Objectives: The aim of the thesis was comparison of changes of electrical activity of intercerebral brain structures using the programme sLORETA between 1) the state of rest and walk on slackline, 2) the state of rest and walk on groundline and 3) between the state of rest and projection of first-person virtual reality of walking on slackline; to find out which intracerebral areas are activated during these activities. Methods: 10 healthy participants took part in the test, 6 males and 4 females, between 18 and 30 years of age, 24 years of age on average. The experiment consisted of EEG gauging at rest with open/closed eyes (5 minutes each) and three other consequent parts in random order: 1. walk on slackline (2 minutes), 2. walk on groundline imitating walk on slackline (2 minutes), 3. watching a video with the first-person virtual reality projection of walking on slackline in basic position (2 minutes). During the whole experiment the brain activity was monitored and recorded by Wireless EEG Nicolet, EEG hat Waveguard Connect with 19 electrodes was used for collecting data by scalp EEG. The record was consequently assessed by sLORETA programme which created projection of active brain parts in 3D Talairach atlas. Results: Statistically...

Manipulation of Phase and Polarization with Liquid Crystal Technology and its Application in Advanced Optics

Alsaiari, Fatimah 11 May 2022 (has links)
The use of Liquid Crystal (LC) materials, mainly in display applications, has contributed to major advancement in liquid crystal science and technology. New and more complex phases of liquid crystals were developed to compete with conventional nematic LC displays. The challenge now is to manufacture high birefringence liquid crystal materials with low viscosity. LC is also used in many other applications, such as temperature sensors and photonics beam shaping in the form of spatial light modulators (SLM) and q-plates. The first objective of this thesis is to investigate the magic mirror effect using a SLM following Sir Michael Berry’s theory. Here, we demonstrated a simple way of producing the magic mirror effect using LC devices and aimed to use a micron-sized device to shape the phase and polarization of light with gentle phase variation. We were able to generate the magic mirror image intensity pattern, both experimentally and theoretically. This was done by computing and generating the desired phase pattern of an image on the SLM, then aligning light propagation through this phase pattern. The experimental and theoretical results showed good agreement when comparing the produced intensity patterns. In the second part of this thesis, we experimentally investigated the use of structured photons, created using q-plates, which is a birefringent liquid crystal cell of OAM and SAM coupling, in quantum key distribution (QKD) using the BB84 protocol through orbital angular momentum (OAM) maintaining optical fibres. Here, we were successful in generating a secure key between two parties with a quantum bit error rate of 8.6% which is below the security threshold of 11%. This work demonstrates the feasibility of using structured light in QKD through fibres to boost key rates and security.

An evaluation of a talking machine, the HC 120 Phonic Mirror Handivoice

Oggerino, James Joseh 01 January 1980 (has links)
This study sought to determine the basic intelligibility of synthesized speech as produced by the HC 120 Phonic Mirror Handivoice. It involved 48 male and female subjects divided into two groups. Group 1 had 40 subjects ranging in age from 18 to 44 years. Group 2 had eight subjects ranging in age from 18 to 33 years. All subjects were screened for normal hearing. Testing for normal hearing was done in an audiological suite at Portland State University. The study was designed to determine the degree to which a group of normal hearing college students could recognize words and phrases as produced by the HC 120 Phonic Mirror Handivoice.
