Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka vad tio deltagare i ett rehabiliteringsprojekt med inriktning på natur, har för uppfattning av naturen och stadsmiljön utifrån en hälsoaspekt. Intervjuer valdes som metod då det ansågs att det var den mest lämpliga metoden för att svara på syftet. Med intervju som metod fanns möjlighet att fördjupa sig i individens syn och tankar kring området natur. Intervjuerna analyserades med inspiration från Steinar Kvales meningskategorisering. Resultatet visade att majoriteten av respondenterna mår bra av att vistas i naturen och i dess omgivning bland växter och djur. Deltagarna upplever att stadsmiljön är en plats där stress och buller från trafik är framträdande men trots det ser många staden som sin naturliga miljö. Flertalet av respondenterna framhåller ett lugn i naturen och en möjlighet att koppla av samt en tystnad som inte finns i samma utsträckning som i staden. Det är inte ansträngande att vistas i naturen och där det finns möjlighet att hämta kraft för att klara av vardagen. / The purpose with this paper is to examine the view of nature and the urban environment from a health point of view, from ten individuals in a rehabilitation Program, with focus on nature. Interview was chosen as method due to it was considered to be the most appropriate method to respond to the purpose of the paper. Using interview as method made it possible to understand the insights and thoughts of the individuals about the nature. The interviews where analyzed with inspiration from Steinar Kvale and his “meningskategorisering”. The result showed that the majority of the individuals experienced wellbeing when visiting the nature and its environment among plants and animals. The individuals experienced that the urban environment is a place where stress and noise from traffic is frequent. Despite that, many individuals feel that the natural environment for them is the urban environment. Most of the individuals points out that there is calm in the nature and a possibility for relaxation that does not exist in the urban environment in the same extent. The individuals describe the possibility to cope with the everyday life through the strength they receive from the nature.

Dagens konflikter utspelar sig mestadels i helt eller delvis bebyggd miljö och vikten av en uppdaterad och väl fungerande prickskytteförmåga är därför central. Detta till trots, återfinns stora brister i den svenska prickskytteutbildningen vad avser just den urbana miljön. Denna uppsats syftar till att dels bidra med nya infallsvinklar samt ge ett användbart arbetsunderlag för Försvarsmaktens vidare utveckling i ämnet. Genom att komma på det klara med hur prickskyttar utbildas och används i Sverige idag och jämföra detta med utländska modeller och andra länders goda och sämre erfarenheter, vill jag ge förslag på hur den svenska prickskytteutbildningen skulle kunna utvecklas. För att ge uppdaterad information har jag begränsat min efterforskning genom att mina studier av andra länders prickskytteerfarenheter avser det senaste decenniets förehavanden, snarare än utvalda länders specifika tillvägagångssätt. Jag har även endast studerat, för svensk trupp, etiskt tillämpbara delar av stridsteknik. Tidigare forskning kring ämnet är koncentrerat till lessons learned-dokument, och en av anledningarna till denna uppsats är att dra faktiska slutsatser av sådana och lägga grund för en tillämpbar utveckling. Uppsatsen behandlar förutom ovanstående även en del historia om prickskytten som sådan, beskrivning av problem jag uppmärksammat i den svenska prickskytteutbildningen samt en del om det urbana slagfältet kontra det traditionella. Med detta som grund ger jag i min slutsats förslag på förbättrande förändringar avseende de urbana delarna i den svenska prickskytteutbildningen. / Today's conflicts are mainly taking place in urban environments and the importance of updated and well-functioning sniper ability is central. Despite this, there are significant deficiencies in the Swedish sniper training with regard to the urban environment. This document aims to partly contribute to new approaches and provide a useful working basis for the Swedish armed forces´ further development on the subject. By defining how snipers are trained and used in Sweden today, and compare it with other countries' experiences, I would like to give suggestions on how the Swedish sniper training could be developed. To provide updated information, I have limited my search to studying different countries´ sniper experience from the last decade, rather than a country-specific approach. I have only studied, for Swedish soldiers, ethically applicable parts of the battle techniques. Earlier research on the subject is concentrated on lessons learned documents, and one of the reasons for this essay is to draw real conclusions from them and present a useful structure for future development. The essay also deals with some history about the sniper concept, the description of the problems I highlighted in the Swedish sniper training and part of the urban battlefield versus the traditional. On this basis, I am presenting my conclusion and suggestions for improvement changes for the urban parts in Swedish sniper training.

Background. The urban environment may increase the risk for psychotic disorder in interaction with pre-existing risk for psychosis, but direct confirmation has been lacking. The hypothesis was examined that the outcome of subclinical expression of psychosis during adolescence, as an indicator of psychosis-proneness, would be worse for those growing up in an urban environment, in terms of having a greater probability of psychosis persistence over a 3·5-year period.
Method. A cohort of 918 adolescents from the Early Developmental Stages of Psychopathology Study (EDSP), aged 14–17 years (mean 15·1 years), growing up in contrasting urban and non-urban environments, completed a self-report measure of psychotic symptoms at baseline (Baseline Psychosis) and at first follow-up around 1 year post-baseline (T1). They were again interviewed by trained psychologists for the presence of psychotic symptoms at the second follow-up on average 3·5 years post-baseline (T2).
Results. The rate of T2 psychotic symptoms was 14·2% in those exposed to neither Baseline Psychosis nor Urbanicity, 12·1% in those exposed to Urbanicity alone, 14·9% in those exposed to Baseline Psychosis alone and 29·0% in those exposed to both Baseline Psychosis and Urbanicity. The odds ratio (OR) for the combined exposure was 2·46 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1·46–4·14], significantly greater than that expected if Urbanicity and Baseline Psychosis acted independently.
Conclusion. These findings support the suggestion that the outcome of the developmental expression of psychosis is worse in urban environments. The environment may impact on risk for psychotic disorder by causing an abnormal persistence of a developmentally common expression of psychotic experiences.

Successful and high precision localization is an important feature for autonomous vehicles in an urban environment. GPS solutions are not good on their own and laser, sonar and radar are often used as complementary sensors. Localization with these sensors requires the use of techniques grouped under the acronym SLAM (Simultaneous Localization And Mapping). These techniques work by comparing the current sensor inputs to either an incrementally built or known map, also adding the information to the map.Most of the SLAM techniques assume the environment to be static, which means that dynamics and clutter in the environment might cause SLAM to fail. To ob-tain a more robust algorithm, the dynamics need to be dealt with. This study seeks a solution where measurements from different points in time can be used in pairwise comparisons to detect non-static content in the mapped area. Parked cars could for example be detected at a parking lot by using measurements from several different days.The method successfully detects most non-static objects in the different test datasets from the sensor. The algorithm can be used in conjunction with Pose-SLAM to get a better localization estimate and a map for later use. This map is good for localization with SLAM or other techniques since only static objects are left in it.

1999 Marmara Earthquakes. Main stimulant for this research is the lack of
acknowledgement of transforming urban and social environments under the overwhelming
forces of disasters both in academic and professional domains in the country.
Appropriation and self-identification of temporary accommodation is a way of adaptation
and a reaction to disruption caused by forced relocation due to disasters. Personalization
process transforms the houses into homes, spaces into places. This transformation is to be
analyzed within the framework of altering urban areas, disasters and adaptation processes
of householders for the resumption of home. Case study will be based on temporary
housing settlements &ndash / prefabricated houses &ndash / in city of Kocaeli.
The aim of this work is to understand the effective forces operating during post disaster
temporary housing periods, to improve reconstruction and planning processes with the
information generated out of the research and to provide data for the policy-making
authorities and academic field.

This thesis aims to analyse the Istanbul Historical Peninsula city walls under the framework of place-making. This study focuses on proposing a way of looking for the place identity of walls upon the dialect of the times, and the dialogue of physical configurations and cognitive imaginaries.
The present wall front is studied and the frequently repeating patterns on this fabric are pointed out throughout the understanding which incorporates both the geographical and spatial imagination. As the identity of places are constituted over the dialectical links between physical setting, activities and meanings, the attempt of the thesis is to inquire the place virtue, to comprehend what city walls propose and which meanings are produced over these city walls.
The value and the uniqueness of the city walls which has a defining impact on the place-making process of Historical Peninsula is acknowledged pointing out to the character of the place. Based on the findings of the thesis, collaboration of diverse disciplines is suggested for future projections in order to appreciate the sense of place and to use the knowledge of place-making while the city walls are brought to the design table of the planners.

Visualization could be defined as the graphical presentation of information, in which the main aim is to improve the user&rsquo / s perception. In all phases of the disaster management, decision makers come across huge data sets with spatio-temporal content. It is hard to deal with these sets in order to find answers to the main question of &ldquo / How can we decrease the losses due to disasters?&rdquo / , which is at the core of the disaster management concept. To furnish this aim, disaster risk information has to be transparent and clearly stated to the public, decision makers and disaster managers. This might be more sophisticated than the calculation of the risk.
Taking precautions before a disaster to reduce the causalities and lossess engendered by natural disasters is relatively cheaper, and more importantly, better than cure. To achieve enhanced preparations for all kinds of disasters, visualization is quite an important tool for decision support and risk communication. The basic aim of this research is to propose a conceptual framework, with the consideration of all stakeholders related to the disaster management issue to have a better risk communication, and to guide the design, implementation and integration of the 3D urban modeling tools into disaster risk visualization. Moreover, an empirical methodology is also developed for the generation of visualization solutions through the design, and employment of the tool for disaster management framework. The proposed framework has three main phases .These are the definition of visualization components, object representation, and needs assessment. A new LoD hierarchy with indoor is proposed to visualize all the possible 3D urban disaster situations in the first phase. Then, a decision rule with eight attributes is proposed in the second phase to establish a link between the hazard type and the LoD needed in a 3D urban model for visualization. This decision rule is applied in a proposed three-level hierarchycal structure. The assessed objects of these three levels are urban, sub-urban zone and building. Moreover, a method to define the needed sub-urban zone is proposed. Finally, different 3D urban modelling methods are analyzed to define the data and process needs of possible 3D urban disaster visualization situations.
Two natural hazard cases are studied within the scope of this dissertation to assess the operability of the proposed framework. These implementations involve one earthquake and one tsunami case. Special attention is paid to finding one specific sample for two modelling viewpoints, namely static and dynamic. The first applications of the proposed framework with all the related features prove quite promising.

Abstract Facilities management (FM) has been identified as a significant contributor to the overall economy of Australia. Its focus is not only the maintenance of property but also the operation of business. Measuring and improving performance in the FM of buildings is becoming important for organisations to create stakeholder satisfaction. Among various FM performance indicators and measurement approaches, choosing the right ones is always difficult. Besides, FM lacks a commonly-agreed or generally-accepted definition of what it entails and a theory of what it does. Its unclear scope and activities are a clear gap in the current state of knowledge. The recognition of the interrelatedness of these aspects is important and leads to the research question for the current project, namely: How can performance be measured and improved in the FM of buildings to satisfy different stakeholders? The project’s aim is to answer this research question by broadening the traditional scope of FM to acknowledge the situation of various relevant stakeholders (people); by offering a new demand-side approach (process) to measure performance; and demonstrating ways to use that means to improve the FM of the built environment (space). Acknowledging the importance of independent research skills and the ability to relate a specific topic to a broad framework of knowledge, this project contributes specific knowledge about the FM industry. A new approach (a virtuous cycle of integrated FM) is developed not only to link the input of facilities and services with the output of business operations, but also to allow multiple stakeholders to participate in decision-making. As demonstrated by the theoretical outcomes, customers are central among other stakeholders to business operations and they have patently different views and management outlooks on FM from the supply-side parties, namely, owners, managers and some tenants. Thus, a balanced approach for all stakeholders in an organisation is required to minimise the effect of asymmetric, imperfect and incomplete information. In addition to “best practice” reckoning which has been widely applied in organisations for years, this research recommends a “best match” approach. The answer to the research question emerges in the form of a performance flowchart with a list of operational tasks, which act as guidelines to acknowledge the situation of various relevant stakeholders, measure performance, and demonstrate ways to improve the FM of the built environment. Importantly, the research is not only directed at grounded theory-building; it acts as a pioneering pilot study to stimulate discussion among professionals and specialists, contribute to the current FM field and provide a basis for future research.

Modelling of urban stormwater drainage systems using ILSAXDayaratne, Sunil Thosainge January 2001 (has links) (PDF)
Over the last few decades, the world has witnessed rapid urbanisation. One of the many complex problems resulting from increased urbanisation is related to management of stormwater from developed areas. If stormwater is not managed properly, it may lead to flooding of urban areas, and deterioration of water quality in rivers and receiving waters. Urban drainage systems are used to manage urban stormwater. For design of effective and economic urban drainage systems, it is important to estimate the design flows accurately. Many computer based mathematical models have been developed to study catchment runoff (or flows) in urban environments. These models may be used in different stages of the projects such as screening, planning, design and operation. Each stage may require a different model, although some models can be used for several of these stages. A customer survey was conducted in May 1997 to study the current practice in Victoria (Australia) on stormwater drainage design and analysis, as part of this thesis. The survey was restricted to city/shire councils and consultants, who are engaged in design and analysis of urban drainage systems. The results of the survey showed that 95% of respondents used the Statistical Rational method. Also, it was revealed that most respondents were reluctant to use stormwater drainage computer models, since there were no adequate guidelines and information available to use them especially for ungauged catchments. According to 5% of the respondents, who used models, ILSAX was the most widely used stormwater drainage computer model in Victoria. The 1987 edition of the Australian Rainfall-Runoff (ARR87) suggests the ILSAX model as one of the computer models that can be used for stormwater drainage design and analysis. Due to these reasons, the ILSAX model was used in this study in an attempt to produce further guidance to users in development and calibration of ILSAX models of urban drainage systems. In order to use the ILSAX model, it is necessary to estimate the model parameters for catchments under consideration. The model parameters include loss model parameters (i.e. infiltration and depression storage parameters) and other parameters related to the catchment (such as percent imperviousness, soil cover and conveyance system parameters). Some of these parameters can be estimated from available maps and drawings of the catchment. The ideal method to determine these parameters (which cannot be reliably determined from available maps and drawings) is through calibration of these models using observed rainfall and runoff data. However, only few urban catchments are monitored for rainfall and runoff, and therefore calibration can be done only for these catchments. At present, there are no clear guidelines to estimate the model parameters for ungauged catchments where no rainfall-runoff data are available. In this PhD project, first the ILSAX model was calibrated for some gauged urban catchments. From the results of calibration of these catchments, regression equations were developed to estimate some model parameters for use in gauged and ungauged urban stormwater catchments. Before calibrating the ILSAX model for gauged catchments, a detailed study was conducted to; - select the most appropriate modelling option (out of many available in ILSAX) for modelling various urban drainage processes, - study the sensitivity of model parameters on simulated storm hydrographs, and - study the effect of catchment subdivision on storm hydrographs. This detailed study was conducted using two typical urban catchments (i.e. one 'small' and one 'large') in Melbourne metropolitan area (Victoria) considering four design storms of different average recurrence intervals (ARI). Three storms with ARI of 1, 10 and 100 years, and one with ARI greater than 100 years were considered in the study. The results obtained from this detailed study were subsequently used in model calibration of the study catchments. The results showed that the runoff volume of 'large' storm events was more sensitive to the antecedent moisture condition and the soil curve number (which determines soil infiltration) and less sensitive to the pervious and impervious area depression storages. However, for 'small' storm events, the runoff volume was sensitive to the impervious area depression storage. The peak discharge was sensitive to pipe roughness, pit choke factor, pit capacity parameters and gutter characteristics for both 'small' and 'large' storm events. The results also showed that the storm hydrograph was sensitive to the catchment subdivision. The accuracy of rainfall-runoff modelling can be adversely influenced by erroneous input data. Therefore, the selection of accurate input data is crucial for development of reliable and predictive models. In this research project, a number of data analysis techniques were used to select good quality data for model calibration. For calibration of model parameters, parameter optimisation was preferred to the trial and error visual comparison of observed and modelled output responses, due to subjectivity and time-consuming nature of the latter approach. It was also preferred in this study, since the model parameters obtained from calibration were used in the development of regional equations for use in gauged and ungauged catchments. Therefore, it was necessary to have a standard method which can be repeated, and produced the same result when the method is applied at different times for a catchment. An optimisation procedure was developed in this thesis, to estimate the model parameters of ILSAX. The procedure was designed to produce the 'best' set of model parameters that considered several storm events simultaneously. The PEST computer software program was used for the parameter optimisation. According to this procedure, the impervious area parameters can be obtained from frequent 'small' storm events, while the pervious area parameters can be obtained from less-frequent 'large' storm events. Twenty two urban catchments in the Melbourne metropolitan area (Victoria) were considered in the model parameter optimisation. Several 'small' and 'large' storm events were considered for each catchment. However, it was found during the analysis that the selected 'large' storm events did not produce any pervious area runoff, and therefore it was not possible to estimate the pervious area parameters for these catchments. The Giralang urban catchment in Canberra (Australia) was then selected to demonstrate the optimisation procedure for estimating both impervious and pervious area parameters, since data on 'small' and 'large' storm events were available for this catchment. The calibration results were verified using different sets of storm events, which were not used in the calibration, for all catchments. The optimised model parameters obtained for each catchment were able to produce hydrographs similar to the observed hydrographs, during verification. The impervious area parameters obtained from optimisation agreed well with the information obtained from other sources such as areal photographs, site visits and published literature. Similarly, the pervious area parameters obtained for the Giralang catchment agreed well with the values given in the published literature. If ILSAX is to be used for ungauged drainage systems for which no storm data are available, then the model parameters have to be estimated by some other means. One method is to estimate them through regional equations, if available. These regional equations generally relate the model parameters to measurable catchment properties. In this study, analyses were conducted to develop such regional equations for use in ungauged residential urban catchments in the Melbourne metropolitan area. The Melbourne metropolitan area was considered as one hydrologically homogeneous group, since the urban development is similar in the area. The equations were developed for the land-use parameters of directly connected impervious area percentage (DCIA) and supplementary area percentage (SA), and the directly connected impervious area depression storage (DSi). Several influential catchment parameters such as catchment area, catchment slope, distance from the Central Business District to the catchment and household density were considered as independent variables in these regional equations. A regional equation was developed for DCIA as a function of the household density. A similar equation was also developed to determine SA as a function of household density. DCIA was obtained from the model parameter optimisation using rainfall-runoff data (i.e. calibration), while SA and household density were obtained from the available drawings and field visits. These two equations showed a very good correlation with household density and therefore, DCIA and SA can be estimated accurately using these two equations. The city/shire councils generally have information on the household density in already developed urban areas and therefore, these two equations can be used to estimate DCIA and SA for these areas. For new catchments, these equations can be used to estimate DCIA and SA based on the proposed household density. The directly connected impervious area depression storage (DSi) is the only ILSAX model loss parameter that was obtained from the calibration, and this is the loss parameter that is more sensitive for 'small' storm events of the urban drainage catchments. A regional equation was attempted for this parameter by relating with the catchment slope, since the catchment slope was found to have some correlation with DSi according to past studies. However, the results in this study did not show a correlation between these two variables. Therefore, based on the results of this study, a range of 0 - 1 mm was recommended for DSi. Because of the recommended range for DSi, the sensitivity of DSi against DCIA was revisited and found that DSi was less sensitive compared to DCIA, in simulating the peak discharge and time to peak discharge for both 'small' and 'large' storm events. However, there is a little impact for runoff volume and hydrograph shape for 'small' storm events. Therefore, defining a range for DSi is justified for modelling purposes and the user can choose a suitable value within this range from engineering judgement.
