連繫功能詞與主題推進教學對增進EFL低成就者的寫作連貫性之研究 / The improvement of coherence in EFL low achievers' writing through the instruction of cohesive devices and thematic progression林舒悠, Lin, Su Yu Unknown Date (has links)
As an indispensable element in English learning, writing instruction in Taiwan actually has been given through the analysis of grammar and sentence patterns. This however ignores another primary key to successful writing—coherence. Due to its obscurity, teachers and students both find it complicated to teach and acquire the ability to organize a written text logically and coherently. The current study investigated the possibility to improve the high school students’ writing by instructing them how to apply the coherence strategies to their writing—cohesive devices (CD) and thematic progression (TP). In this study, with the teaching schedule unaffected, the researcher’s 39 second-graders in one Taipei senior high school were first taught how to analyze the coherence of the reading passages in the textbooks. Then they were required to apply and examine CD and TP when writing. Two low achievers of these students were further selected to investigate their writing development by examining their written texts with CD and TP applied in writing conferences, having interviews with the researcher and keeping journals between classes and writing conferences.
Concluded from the quantitative and qualitative data collected, the results revealed that the two low-proficiency students were able to get high grades in the holistic writing performance and coherence of writing. They were meanwhile found to be able to apply the same categories of CD (reference, conjunction and reiteration) and types of TP (simple linear TP type and TP with a constant theme) as the ones used by the high-proficiency learners in previous studies. During the five-month study, the participants also cultivated the ability to focus more on content level and to revise properly in their writing with the help of CD and TP. Besides, since the participants held positive attitudes toward the learning of CD and TP, the researcher recommends that the combination of CD and TP should be integrated into the writing instruction in current normal English writing class in Taiwan to help students comprehend the abstract coherence and to improve their writing by analyzing CD and TP in the written texts.

O vztazích mezi tematickými posloupnostmi a kohezními vazbami ve vybraných moderních povídkách a pohádce / On the Interface between Thematic Progressions and Cohesive Ties in Selected Modern Short Stories and a Fairy TaleMalá, Lucie January 2017 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the comparison of two short stories by Angela Carter with the fairy tale on which they are based. It attempts to discern to what extent the author preserved the structure of the fairy tale, as viewed from a linguistic point of view, in her short stories. The thesis also suggests an interpretation of the motivation and effect of the divergences of the structure of the short stories from that of the fairy tale. The three texts are analysed from three points of view: thematic progressions, discourse subjects and cohesive chains, and cohesive ties. Attention is payed first to the description of the individual texts, and then to the comparison of the three texts. The comparison puts emphasis on the distinction between the shorts stories on one hand and the fairy tale on the other hand. The comparison shows that the structure of the fairy tale is to a large extent retained in the short stories, as they share characteristics on all the three levels of analysis. The short stories were found to differ from the fairy tale in two main respects, connected to each other, which influence the differences in their structure: the age of the intended reader, and the context and setting of the story.

主題推進與凝結功能詞在英語閱讀上的探討 / Thematic Progression and Cohesive Devices: An Approach to English Reading藍麗玫, Lan, Li mei Unknown Date (has links)
Type 1: Simple Linear TP,Type 2: TP with a continuous (constant) theme,Type 3: TP with derived T’s,Type 4: Exposition of a Split Rheme。 這六種主題推進類型再加上由Halliday and Hasan所提出的五種凝結關係 (cohesive ties, i.e. reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction, and lexical cohesion) 被用來分析上述的文章並且應用在英文大學入學考試試題的解題。 / Because little attention has been paid to the explicit teaching of text structure
in local senior high schools, this present study analyzes the reading texts to explore how students are exposed to expositive and narrative text types and how the text is structured. Reading texts are selected from textbooks for senior high school students and then theme categories, thematic progression types and cohesive devices are analyzed. Combined Daneš’s theory with Cloran’s suggestion, the following six types of thematic progression (TP) are identified: Type 1, Rheme>Theme pattern (> means ‘followed by’); Type 2, Theme>Theme pattern; Type 3, Split Theme; Type 4, Split Rheme; Type 5, Theme>Rheme pattern; and Type 6, Rheme>Rheme pattern. Besides, five cohesive ties (i.e. reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction, and lexical cohesion) proposed by Halliday and Hasan are identified as clue to trace the progression. Next, evidence is found to decode gapped passages in Integrative Test (綜合測驗, i.e. Cloze Test), Semantic Choice (文意選填), and Discourse Structure (篇章結構).
Besides the presupposed six progression patterns mentioned above, one more type is found and categorized as Referential Type. The progression of Referential Type involves the use of cohesive device this or that. The findings are presented as follows: In the analysis of reading texts in EFL textbooks, thematic progression of Type 1 R>T and Type 2 T>T predominates the frequency of occurrence, while thematic progression of Type 5 T>R and Type 6 R>R follows behind, and Referential Type ranks third in terms of frequency, followed by Type 4 Split R outnumbering Type 3 Split T. Furthermore, while applying to the analysis of test passages, the outcome of progression types is roughly correspondent with what is mentioned above. As for cohesive ties, reference predominates the frequency of occurrence, followed by lexicon. Of all the cohesive devices, items of personal reference are found to appear most frequently, and then the second most are items of the same word.
Through the exploration and analysis of thematic progression and cohesive devices, it is hoped that students’ awareness of textual organization will be enhanced and thus help activate efficient reading.

Construction de macro-propositions dans une émission radiophonique interactive anglophone / Macro-proposition formation in a British phone-in programmeKoszul, Bertrand 23 November 2012 (has links)
This study examines the relations between textual propositions and macro-propositions as defined by van Dijk and Kintsch. The corpus used consisted of texts taken from a BBC phone in programme. In the first part of the study a link was sought between the structure of the text and the information structure of the messages. The patterns identified by Fries and Martin in written texts however could not be found in the oral texts of the corpus. The second part of the research focused on macro-propositions deriving from generalisation. An analysis of the lexicalisation of the concepts of these macro-propositions showed that generalisation was made on a conceptual basis as opposed to a lexical one and that the generalisation macro-rule defined by van Dijk and Kintsch fails to account for all the macro-propositions generated during comprehension.

The present thesis has as a general objective analyze the textual progression and thematic structure in reviews produced by students in Higher Education, based on the theoretical assumptions of Systemic Functional Linguistics (HALLIDAY, 1978; HALLIDAY and MATTHIESSEN, 2004, 2014; MARTIN and ROSE , 2007; ROSE and MARTIN, 2012) allied to Textual Linguistics, supported by the referential studies, in a socio-interactionist perspective. (MONDADA, 2001; MONDADA and DUBOIS, 2003; MARCUSCHI, 1983 and 2008; KOCH et al.,2005; KOCH and ELIAS, 2010; KOCH, 2014; CAVALCANTE, 2011, 2012 and 2013; CAVALCANTE et al., 2014; and CIULLA, 2008). What motivated this study were the difficulties faced by students, when they produced texts with academic rigor demand, and the interest to understand how the study of the processes of referential and thematic organization and can support the work with academic writing. For this, the data were analyzed from the textual metafunction, considering four contextual strata that involve the text: the context of culture and its realization in genres, the context of situation across the variables of field, tenor and mode, the semantic-discursive stratum through the analysis of the discursive systems of identification and periodicity, and of the processes of reference, in order to observe how the students build textual progression the textual discourse functions, which are more used in the composition of review genre; and finally, the lexicogrammatical stratum analyzed through the identification of the thematic structure and information structure. This is a qualitative-interpretative study The investigation subjects were students of the Universidade Estadual do Rio Grande do Sul (UERGS), attending the first semester at undergraduate level. The corpus is constituted by 10 (ten) texts of the review genre. The results show that the patterns of thematic structure are directly related to the composition of the genres and to the knowledge that the students have in relation to the lexicogrammar, to the semantic-discursive and structural aspects of the text. The analysis of the discursive-semantic stratum allowed us to look at the textual metafunction and to understand how the process of textual progression occurs, from the processes of thematic progression and referential progression. For the types of references and thematic structure present in the texts, it can be concluded that the students are aware of these strategies of textual construction, however it is evident the necessity to become this knowledge explicit, in such a way that their productions develop in terms of discursive qualities. In conclusion, as a contribution of this thesis, it is hoped to awaken the interest for the approached topic, as well as to offer theoretical and practical subsidies for the planning of intervention proposals in the academic context, constituting an important tool for working with writing and textual/discursive analysis in Higher Education.

La cohésion dans l’écrit d’apprenants de français langue étrangère en contexte universitaire vénézuélien / Cohesion in written productions by french as a foreign language learnes in venezuelian university contextDi Tillio Lacruz, Mariluz 09 February 2010 (has links)
This dissertation offers a study of the various nominal cohesion and discursive organisation procedures in written French as a Foreign Language based on a corpus of narrative and theoretical type texts written by twenty four students from the University of “Los Andes” in Venezuela at various stages of their language learning. A description of the first mentions of the referents and the anaphoric mechanisms [the densities and the modes of functioning of the forms] has been realized by making out the specific uses according to the type of speeches discovered in the texts. This analysis was based on the one hand on the concepts of linguistic production and discursive types of J.-P. Bronckart [1996], and, on the other hand, on M. Charolles’s researches [1991, 2002] on the anaphora and reference, and the study by G. de Weck [1991] on anaphoric cohesion. Moreover, based on another corpus constituted by narrative texts written by nineteen French native speakers, a comparison of the cohesive performance of both groups of writers has been made. It allowed us to draw out the cohesive specificities of the texts written by the French as a Foreign Language students. An analysis of the thematic progression set up according to the distribution of themes and rhemes [Combettes, 1988, 1993] of the first sequences of texts has been realized. Once this study was completed it was possible to establish the cohesion mechanisms which depend on conditions imposed by the discursive types, the instructions of the writing task and - or by the thematic contents of the texts, as well as the strategies used by the students according to their command of French. Finally, didactic implications of the results obtained have been highlighted.

This essay deals with translation changes taking place when translating two information-dense German texts into Swedish. The study focuses on the preverbal position of V2 declaratives, i.e. on the so called pre-field in German and Swedish sentences. This position plays an important role for the structuring of information, both at the intra-sentential and at the inter-sentential level. The aim of the study is therefore to investigate to what extent the information structure of the source text is carried over to the target text. A quantitative sentence-by-sentence analysis of the pre-fields of the source and target text shows many cases of re-structuring and re-writing have taken place during the translation process. A closer examination of those changes reveals some tendencies regarding the translation of the German pre-fields. In many cases text-initial rhematic (not previously mentioned) subjects of the source text have been replaced with time adverbials which function as so-called frame topics in the target text. Also, heavy, information-dense pre-fields of the source text have been split into two or more sentences in the target text. Furthermore there has been a “neutralization” of so-called marked structures of the source text. While those marked structures are used to achieve communicative effects in the source text, equal effects are mostly achieved by lexical means in the target text. The genre and style of the texts proved to play an important role for the choice between keeping and abandoning the information structure of the source text.
