Lamprecht, Nico Carl. January 2008 (has links)
Representations of Dutch contacts with coastal inhabitants of Africa, 1475-1652. Prior to 1996, South African Dutch studies had largely been determined by traditional rigid historical and geographic boundaries set in 1933. The framework exclusively focused on the period after the arrival of Van Riebeeck in 1652 to 1925 (when Afrikaans replaced Dutch as an official language) and on topics regarded as typically South African. Siegfried Huigen in 'De Weg naar Monomotapa' (1996) not only questioned these limitations but introduced a revised time frame including the period “about 1596 to 1652”. The revised framework has provided an opportunity to study texts prior to 1652 including both the earliest recorded Dutch contacts with the coastal inhabitants of Africa as well as the significant 1595 record of the initial Dutch cross-cultural encounters on the coast of Southern Africa. Where the role of the Dutch East India Company after 1602 had previously been considered foremost, the maritime forces of the Dutch States General and independent Dutch traders before 1602 and the activities of the Dutch West Indies Company after 1621 on the entire African coast had attracted little attention. Contact between the Dutch and coastal inhabitants of Africa and the textual representations of such contacts had contributed to a more extensive Dutch frame of reference than had previously been presumed. Previous assumptions attributing the nature of representations to the frequency and length of contacts had somehow not accounted for similar factors not influencing representations of coastal inhabitants elsewhere in Africa nor had the actual extent of the Dutch frame of reference been fully considered. Since the initial 1595 textual representation of Willem Lodewycksz describing the contact between the Dutch and Khoikhoi in Mossel Bay, the texts have had a profound influence on the South African discourse. Comparative studies of the initial representations and early 20th century compilations of the primary texts indicate that the elucidation prevalent in the more recent works has been the source of questionable interpretations and conclusions that have erroneously been attributed to the late sixteenth century seafaring scribes. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2008.

'n Toponimies-linguistiese ondersoek na Duitse plekname in Suidwes-Afrika.

Moller, Lucie Alida. January 1986 (has links)
The German place nomenclature in South west Africa, under the influence of various toponymic and linguistic factors, spontaneously developed into a unique toponymicon. The specific nature of this toponymicon is marked by a large number of inherited name transfers from Europe on the one hand and a partially or fully germanized local toponymicon with numerous examples of translations, adopted loan names and substitutions on the other hand. This unique toponymicon mainly originated from the inter linguistic interaction between German, Afrikaans and the indigenous languages of the territory. The supposition on which the theoretical concept and research method was formulated and executed, is the dichotomous nature of the place names as onomastic and linguistic signs. The German place names have certain general, but also intrinsic toponymic and linguistic features in common. This prompted the diachronic and synchronic analysis of the place names on both linguistic and onomastic levels. The onomastic approach entailed the analysis of the structural composition of the place names; the toponymic motives; the interlinguistic contact situation; the origins, etymologies and semantic aspects of the names. On the linguistic level the names were analyzed according to syntagmatic and paradigmatic criteria and categorized according to linguistic principles pertaining to proper nouns, specifically toponyms or place names. The conclusion was reached that the German South West African toponymicon, despite the large number of name transfers that occurred and the close resemblance with its European origins which is still clearly discernible, appears on the formal and functional level as a unique, yet true Southern African toponymicon . / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of Natal, Durban, 1986.

Nieman, Marietha Maria. January 2001 (has links)
In this dissertation it is indicated that gender is a social construct, while sex is biologically determined. The concept of gender refers to that which is understood within a certain society to define masculinity and femininity, the power struggle between the two sexes, as well as the social limitations which are placed on people's behaviour as a result of gender. Children's and young adult's literature exert a great influence on the youth's idea of gender roles. The social and cultural history of South African society is used in this study to explore stereotypical gender roles in Afrikaans youth literature. The role of a patriarchal society, homosexuality, and changing perceptions of gender roles are investigated. It is indicated that in both English and Afrikaans children's and young adult's literature the portrayal of gender roles is often unrealistic, stereotypical, and contains sexist language. Two novels namely, Gooi horn in die slool (1971) and Skilpoppe (1998), are analysed using the following categories: male or female author, representation of gender roles, and use of sexist language. The teaching implications of the findings for the second language learner are then articulated. / Thesis (M.A.) - University of Natal, Durban, 2001.

Weil, Talana 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: After 1880 more and more Jews (mostly of East European descent) moved into the rural areas of South Africa. Initially they travelled across the country as hawkers but later settled permanently in many of the smaller towns. In most cases they opened shops or started businesses of another kind. Due to the nature of their work the Jews mostly came into contact with the Afrikaans speaking community. Although these two groups differed considerably in many ways, especially as regards language and religion, the Jews adapted and integrated fairly quickly. They became involved with the Afrikaans speaking community in various ways and made a substantial contribution. Although their involvement in and contribution to the economy can be considered as the most important, they also played a considerable role in other areas such as politics, education, language, sport and recreation. The presence of the Jews in rural South Africa was important not only because of their integration with the Afrikaans speaking community and the contribution they made as a group, but also because of the extent to which the two groups influenced each other. Both groups were culturally enriched and the South African country town developed a unique character due to the presence or the Jews and their involvement in the life and activities of the townspeople. Although the Jews were influenced by the Afrikaans speaking community and thus acquired new cultural assets, they still to a large extent retained their Jewish identity. On the whole there was a very good relationship between the Afrikaans speaking rural population and the Jews. After 1950 an increasingly large number of Jews moved to the cities. The depopulation of the rural areas, as regards to Jews, took place to such an extent that today only a few Jewish families remain in rural areas.

Conradie-Faul, Jacqueline 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study is to investigate man's use of the mollusk within selected art forms, and to use the research results to design a contemporary museum exhibition, relevant within a South African context. Two sections are presented. In section A the selected art forms, fine arts, architecture, furniture design, masks and music and other sound instruments are thoroughly investigated to determine in what way the mollusk/shell is used in or on these art forms. A large number of figures are included to illustrate the available examples, and to aid the reader in the visualization of these applications. In section B a design solution is presented, based on the research results of section A. The compilation of an exhibition team and the whole design process, from the choice of an exhibition theme to the evaluation of the exhibition, is investigated. The exhibition designer plays the important role of interpreting the research results and to compile a design solution. A wide variety of exhibition techniques are recommended for the design solution, including theatre productions, special lighting and sound effects, demonstrations and tours. A number of figures are included, where photos taken during the museum visitations and design sketches provide further insight into the design solution. From the research results it was noted that an educational subject such as the mollusk/shell, can be made timely and attractive for the museum visitor by the use of creative, contemporary and relative exhibition techniques.

Geldenhuys, Hugo Amos 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 1986.

Afrikaans as kommunikasietaal in sy elementêre vorm by derdetaalsprekers by Hoërskool Weston

Vraagom, Elvin 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Modern Foreign Languages))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / Over the past three years, Weston High School has received an increasing number of Xhosa-speaking learners. They come from remote rural towns in the Eastern Cape. At present, there are approximately forty Xhosa-speaking learners at the school. Many of these learners understand very little English or Afrikaans while others speak “broken” Afrikaans and / or English. They have a lack op prior knowledge and their exposure to Afrikaans was limited. As part of this project, a computer programme was designed to support the Afrikaans language needs of these learners. The programme endeavours to develop the limited vocabulary and language abilities of these learners in elementary Afrikaans. The emphasis is on Afrikaans as a medium of communication. The programme has been developed according to the language needs of these learners. The design and composition of the project is based on general theoretical principals of computer-assisted language learning (CALL). The project is discussed and analysed within the CALL environment.

Bruwer, Debbie 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Afrikaans and Dutch))—University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / The purpose of this thesis is to highlight the importance of a consistent translation strategy in the translation of proper names. Coupled with this is the importance of translators having a sound theoretical knowledge that serves as a foundation for the translation of any given text. These aspects are central to the successful realisation of cultural communication seeing that proper names are one of the most important cultural indicators. First, we looked at the first book in the Harry Potter series as to determine the number of proper names that were translated and how many were not translated. Different translation strategies were then looked at to determine whether there was a purposeful and logical explanation, and motivation behind the manner and degree of translation of the proper names. This was followed by a close comparison between book one and book five as to determine whether the inconsistent use of translation strategies, was consistently applied throughout the series. Central to this study is the necessity of successful cultural communication and how the inconsistent use of certain elements can have a negative impact on the cultural communication in any literary work. To establish successful cultural communication, every translator needs a clear skopos/brief for the target text. As a point of departure I will look at certain concepts such as translation norms, culture and translation as well as various translation strategies. The impact of inconsistent translation strategies on texts will be highlighted throughout this thesis.

Viviers, Marni 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Afrikaans and Dutch))—University of Stellenbosch, 2008. / The Northwestern Cape enjoys prominence in George Weideman’s comprehensive oeuvre. Weideman, who was raised in this area, explains that it is a region with which he has a strong emotional connection. In this study the representation of space will be examined with specific reference to Weideman’s portrayal of the Northwestern Cape in the volume of poetry 'n Staning onder sterre (1997). The focus will be on Weideman’s depiction of the Northwestern Cape and more specifically his portrayal of it as both a geographical space and a space of the landscape. Not only does Weideman represents the geographical space of the Northwestern Cape in great (objective) detail, he also presents the reader with a very personal (subjective) depiction of a landscape with which he has strong personal ties. In fact, it is the premis of my study that Weideman’s depiction of this space is more personal than objective. Rather than just a geographical space, it becomes a metaphysical domain with spiritual, creative and intertextual dimensions; a landscape that is accessed through memory and the imagination. Although 'n Staning onder sterre is filled with geographical markers and functions as a cultural and historical document which gives an account of an unique region and its people, this volume of poetry should rather be read as a petit histoire in which the poet’s personal convictions continuously surface during the representationprocess.

Barendse, Joan-Mari 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Afrikaans and Dutch))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / This study compares Etienne Leroux’s Die eerste siklus and Jaco Fouché’s Die avonture van Pieter Francken. In Chapter 1, similarities between their works, as discussed by critics in reviews and articles, are examined. The different theories that exist about the field of comparative literature are also discussed, and a theory is formulated which can be applied to this study. Aspects of the novels that are going to be discussed are also set out. Chapter 2 deals with the socio-political as well as the literary-historical contexts in which Leroux and Fouché published their work. In the case of the socio-political context, a distinction is made between the time and place in which the works were published, and the context in which the narration of the novels are set. Chapter 3 deals with the figure of the outsider. The outsider figures in the novels are identified and compared to each other. Chapter 4 deals with the way in which the traditional knight tales function as an inter-text and how some of the characters are portrayed as the Jungian archetype of the “knight” or “hero”. In the conclusion the main points of the comparison are brought together.
