I Po Tidholms Norrland kan man läsa om Norrlands utveckling från 1990-talet till 2012. Tidholms bok ger insyn i hur tillvaron kan te sig i norrländska samhällen och skildrar en komplex relation till naturen, såväl som till den politik som möjliggjort industrialiseringens framfart som gjort landsändan till hela Sveriges naturresurs. Tidholm har i flera år varit en viktig och tydlig röst för Norrland som belyser Norrlandsfrågan och de konsekvenser den storstadscentrerade politiken haft på landsändan. I Norrland kan man läsa om de stora bolagen, om samerna, de nyinflyttade och om de norrlänningar som bott där sedan generationer tillbaka. Tidholm lyfter i sin bok flera olika perspektiv på naturen där de olika grupperna har sina egna tankar om vad naturen betyder och vad den ska vara. Genom att studera hur Tidholm skildrar den moderna Norrlandsfrågan och hur industrialiseringen har påverkat regionen undersöker uppsatsen hur han framställer frågan om vem som äger naturen, vad den betyder samt hur den ser ut och används i ett modernt samhälle. Den teoretiska utgångspunkten för uppsatsen är ekokritiken. Uppsatsen har kunnat visa att Tidholm i sin bok framställer hur industrialiseringen medförde att naturens resurser utnyttjades. Förlorarna var, enligt Tidholm, bönderna, samerna och naturen själv. Därtill har den påvisat motsättningar i natursynen mellan de olika grupperna i norr som skildras i hans bok. Tidholm gestaltar dessa genom att belysa olika konflikter mellan de som förespråkar en mer storskalig och exploaterande relation till naturen. Även Tidholms egen natursyn innehåller intressanta motsättningar där han hyllar en romantiserad bild av naturen och kritiserar den i sitt naturliga tillstånd. I Norrland framgår det att naturen har ett instrumentellt värde för det nutida samhället, detta trots inslag av moraliska dilemman och samvetskval.

In the following essay, I examine the ecocritical aspects of the writings of Thomas Tidholm, Swedish poet and children’s author. I argue for the existence of “green threads” that permeate the authorship, and analyse them through three thematic chapters where several of Tidholm’s texts, for children and adults, are juxtaposed in order to expand, contrast and deepen one another. The themes are: approaching the other, language and humanity and parts and unity. In my analysis I show that Tidholm continues to return to these themes throughout many different texts, exploring the difficulties and possibilities in human relationships to each otherand to nature. I conclude that even though Tidholm questions whether we truly can come close to, communicate with and fully understand others (humans or otherwise), he seems to hold the conviction that it is vitally important that we try. While the essay belongs in the field of ecocriticism, my working approach has been that of ordinary language philosophy as defined by literary scholar Toril Moi, following the works of Wittgenstein, Austin and Cavell. Thus, the essay is written in a spirit of acklowledgement rather than scepticism – my aim has been to bring out important aspects of the texts and show that, when read together, those aspects are enhanced. I find this especially important since the readerships of poetry and picture books do not always overlap. Furthermore, I suggest that Thomas Tidholm can be seen as a contemporary thinker whose ideas question and seek alternatives to the individualism of capitalist modern society.
