Grobbelaar, Margaretha Louisa 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MMus (Music))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Unisa piano examinations play a vital role in present-day South African music education. Results attained in the Unisa examinations can be used as subject marks at school, and could also give the pupil access to an audition towards further studies at a tertiary institution. While the examination body is of great importance, there is no literature to be found on the success of the system. The researcher firstly intends to establish to what extend the development of the piano has had an influence on technique and pedagogy. Educational philosophies that follow from this are discussed shortly, as well as beginner teaching methods by using four well known beginner books. The above aspects form the background used to understand the prominence and development of the examination system. Secondly, the components of the external examinations are determined and how holistically this approach is implemented in lessons. While keeping in mind that the 2010 syllabus consists of only four pieces, prescribed scales, aural tests, sightreading and practical musicianship, candidates are restricted with regard to repertoire knowledge, technical abilities and ensemble. Traditionally, great emphasis has been placed on the importance of external examinations. This places enormous pressure on the learner, resulting in added stress during the examining procedure. This is reflected in their performances, and therefore the pupil’s ability cannot be tested in an objective manner. Yet the result of external examinations is important to teachers, pupils and parents, and is used to evaluate the pupil’s skill and capability as a musician. Three research methodologies were used to ensure an accurate study. A literature review was completed to investigate the need that led to the development of external examinations. To place the research within a South African context, a survey of a quantitative nature was conducted by means of a questionnaire. The aim is firstly to ascertain what teachers use as teaching material and secondly the extent to which the external examination contributes to the structuring of the learning process. This empirical study focuses on the teacher and the examination experience of the learner as well as the role and opinion of the parents regarding the external examining system. Statistical models were created to represent the data captured. Data analysis shows that on average, most teachers are reliant on the Unisa syllabus for choosing repertoire and the structuring of their lessons. This implies that the learner is restricted to the Unisa syllabus and its requirements, which inhibit the development of further musical challenges. Due to the degree of difficulty of the external examinations, there is little room for additional works and therefore the learner is often limited to playing less than six pieces a year. In conclusion, the researcher suggests the following: to propose a new school of thought based on the development of musicianship rather than achievementorientated tuition. The playing of external examinations does not need to be the main object of music tuition; rather, external examinations should be used as a guide for assessment, which forms part of a holistic approach to music education.

Meijer, Maria Magdalena 09 July 2008 (has links)
ENGLISH: The primary goal of my study was to investigate the negotiation of black identity within a white school context, and to critically evaluate the application of emotional intelligence as a means of therapeutic intervention to a black adolescent within a white school context. The study was conducted by means of a case study in which the emotional intelligence of a black adolescent attending a white school was measured by the administration of the BarOn EQ-i:YV™. The findings were integrated into the therapy sessions. The study was motivated by previous research results showing that emotional intelligence contributes significantly to the optimal functioning of an individual. Emotional intelligence includes an individual’s ability to understand and express one’s own emotions, to understand the emotions of others, to exercise control over one’s emotions, to apply problem-solving skills in relationships and to be self-motivated. / Dissertation (MEd (Educational Psycholgy))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Educational Psychology / unrestricted

An Education Law perspective on educator misconduct and educator security / Christina Susanna Mans

Mans, Christina Susanna January 2015 (has links)
Protective, as well as punitive legal measures applicable to education, are embedded in various acts. Despite these legal measures, incidences of educator misconduct occur at schools and often go unpunished. The implied situation, namely that the legal measures are not applied correctly, as well as the effect that educator misconduct has on educator security, is a cause for concern. This study is embedded in Education Law as the subject area and aimed to determine the effect of educator misconduct on educator security. Factors contributing to the phenomenon of non-punishment of educator misconduct were also investigated and determined. By utilising a qualitative research design and participants from a specific geographical area, a variety of findings have been made. The most important finding is that particular instances of educator misconduct has a detrimental effect on educator security which manifests on the physical as well as psychological levels of the participants in this study. Educator misconduct not only impacts educator security, but may also lead to a dysfunctional equilibrium, rendering schools ineffective. Some reasons for not applying legal measures include an unacceptably low standard of legal knowledge among employees, union involvement, ubuntu and the tribal hierarchy system. These reasons have, however, been found to be perfunctory. The deep-seated reason can be attributed to the quest for modernisation. Not all societies have fully modernised and rural societies, in particular, are still trapped in a transition period. The expectancy levels for service delivery and professionalism in these societies are low, thus contributing to educators‟ misconduct and unprofessional behaviour. / MEd (Education Law), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015

Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and Zulu / Assessment is considered as integral to the teaching and learning process of Mathematics where various types of assessment are used to develop feedback for several purposes. Research has highlighted the challenge of the dominance of summative assessment in classroom assessment practices. In recent years, world countries have been acknowledging the use of assessment for learning (AfL) to enhance the learning process and thus improve learner performance. This research explored how Mathematics teachers applied AfL in their classrooms. A theoretical framework to support AfL was presented through an overview of constructivism theory, social justice theory, connectivism theory, TPACK theory and Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy. A qualitative approach and a case study design were applied involving nine Mathematics teachers from nine primary schools. Data, collected through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation and document analysis, were thematically analysed. The findings show a positive understanding of what AfL is and its importance to the teaching and learning of Mathematics. However, the application of AfL was found to be inconsistent with its purpose of creating an environment conducive to develop feedback that supports the learning process. Challenges that inhibit its application were found to outweigh successes experienced by teachers. Lack of theoretical understanding of the use of AfL, overcrowding, the language of learning and teaching and lack of resources emerged as some of the major challenges. Teachers pleaded for more in-service training opportunities to assist them with managing assessment for learning practices in Mathematics. Volgens navorsing oorheers summatiewe assessering in klaskamers. / Ukuhlola kuthathwa njengento esemqoka ohlelweni lokufundisa nokufunda imethamethiksi lapho izinhlobo ezahlukahlukene zokuhlola zisetshenziswa ukwakha umbiko wakamuva ngesizathu sezinhloso ezimbalwa.

Van der Merwe, Wynand Johannes 10 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / Due to the radical reform in mathematics education worldwide, the mathematics curriculum underwent dramatic changes in order to meet the new objectives in mathematics. This has placed a huge responsibility on curriculum compilers and the authors of mathematics textbooks and mathematics teachers to enhance the cognitive development of learners. This study takes the view that: What happens in the class is what you get. Based on the above statement, the foundation of mathematics teaching, namely the mathematics curriculum, the mathematics textbook and the teacher’s instruction in the teaching venue were scrutinised. During a diagnostic examination of teachers’ interpretation, knowledge and application of the mathematics curriculum and the content of mathematics textbooks on the East Rand, the following problems regarding mathematics teaching emerged: The most important finding of TIMMS is that the differences in performance in mathematics between different countries can be linked to the way teachers interpret and present the content of mathematics. Research has revealed that the interaction of teachers with curriculum content follow a dynamic and constructive application instead of direct application based on the mathematics curriculum. Teachers often change the prescriptions and order of content in the mathematics curriculum to suit their teaching style, knowledge and previous experience. Consequently, align application of mathematical concepts and skills does not take place and this creates a gap in learners’ cognitive development. It also leaves a gap in the application of the Type 5 cognitive development tasks in mathematics which enable a verifying deductive application of concepts. The action research created a structure which could meet this need. Authors of mathematics textbooks present their own vision, interpretation and style in mathematics textbooks, which influences the order of mathematics content and concepts. The result is that mathematics content and concepts are at times not aligned with representations in the mathematics curriculum and objectives are therefore not reached. The different interpretations of mathematics textbooks by teachers differ greatly and these differences place great pressure on teachers to decide how the mathematics textbook will be used in the teaching venue. In this study a mathematics textbook profile and a task analysis were formulated in the cause of action research which will enable teachers to make a professional analysis which they can use. Because a variety of mathematics textbooks are selected for use in schools, teachers assume that these approved mathematics textbooks focus on the curriculum. They therefore slavishly follow the mathematics textbooks without consulting the mathematics curriculum. Shortcomings in mathematics textbooks and teachers’ own interpretation of mathematics content leave a big gap in their own alignment of mathematics teaching. To satisfy this need, an assessment profile and an methodology for alignment are provided to enable teachers to monitor the curriculum alignment presentation of concepts and skills.
