A case for mother tongue education?

Desai, Zubeida Khatoom January 2012 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / The question as to which language should be used as a medium of instruction in schools in multilingual societies is a controversial one. In South Africa, the question is often posed in binary terms: Should the medium of instruction be a familiar local language such as Xhosa or a language of wider communication like English? This study is an attempt to answer the above question. The study profiled the writing abilities of Grade 4 and Grade 7 pupils at Themba Primary, a school located in Khayelitsha in the Western Cape, in both their mother tongue, Xhosa, and in English, their official medium of instruction at school since Grade 4. Three written tasks, which consisted of a narrative piece of writing, a reading comprehension exercise, and an expository piece of writing, were administered to the pupils in English and Xhosa. The purpose of the exercise was to examine some of the implications for educational language policy of the differences in performance in the two languages. All the tasks were authentic, in that they were based on aspects of the pupils' curriculum and written in the formal academic language pupils were expected to be exposed to in their respective grades. All the tasks were graded systematically under controlled conditions. / South Africa

Studiehandledning till flerspråkiga elever : Underliggande mekanismer som förklarar samverkan mellan studiehandledare och lärare –ur studiehandledares perspektiv

Farman, Maya January 2022 (has links)
Introduction: Study supervision in the mother tongue aims to support newly arrived and multilingual students in primary and secondary school, where study supervisors and teachers work together for the learning and development of newly arrived and multilingual students. Despite the importance of study supervision, collaboration between study supervisors and teachers was described as not functioning in several researches. That study focuses on investigating which basic mechanisms explain the collaboration between study supervisors and teachers. Purpose: The purpose of the study is, by using critical realism as an approach, to explain the collaboration between study supervisors and teachers in the teaching of multilingual Arabic-speaking students in 5 municipalities from the perspective of study supervisors, to explain which mechanisms make the cooperation possible. Method: The study used a qualitative method based on qualitative interviews. The analysis used qualitative content analysis with critical realism as an approach. Results: The results of the study constitute the following mechanisms for cooperation between study supervisors and teachers, structuring and organization of study supervision, 1)- The study supervisor's experience with teachers' planning, 2)- Experience and knowledge of study supervision, and 3)- Time and place. These results can be helpful in practice to improve cooperation between study supervisors and teachers, by structuring and organizing study supervision via school, study supervisors and teachers get better conditions in cooperation around multilingual students, and provide the opportunity to improve communication between study supervisors and teachers where both work in the same place, as well as making time for continuous collaboration. /
Godkännande datum: 2022-08-29

Flerspråkiga barns inkludering i förskolan : En studie om förskollärares arbete kring barn med annat modersmål än svenska / Multilingual children’s inclusion in preschool : A study of preschool teachers’ work around children with a mother tongue other than Swedish

Skoglöf, Jenny January 2016 (has links)
This study aims to find out how the children in preschool who have another mother tongue than Swedish are included in the group of children. Being included means that all children in the group are considered as an entirety, which means that no child should be excluded and that diversity promotes learning. I feel that preschool teachers have great responsibility for the children’s situation, that is why preeschool teachers have been focused in my study. My empirical study is done with three preschool teachers in three different preschools. An interview with predetermined questions has been made with each one. They where also allowed to talk freely around the questions. Other data collection for the study has been done by reading relevant literature. The study takes its starting point in my experiences of a lack of attitude in preschool staff, as well as a mother tongues support that results in excluding the child. The result shows that a conscious approach among the staff exists which promotes the child's inclusion. It also shows that the mother tongue support that children get does not benefit them in preschool.

Ett språkämne bland andra? : En policystudie om modersmålsundervisning i grundskolan

Mikhaylova, Tatiana January 2016 (has links)
The main objective of this study is to increase knowledge of how mother tongue as a school subject is constructed, legitimized and positioned at the policy level. Based on the analysis of governmental policy documents, the thesis deals with mother tongue instruction (MTI) in the Swedish compulsory school, its historical development and status among other language subjects. The study draws on the curriculum theory, which means that the focus lies on the relationship between content of the curriculum and the historical, social and cultural context in which it was conducted. Regarding MTI, I argue that it is located at an intersection among immigration, education and language policies and must, therefore, be viewed in the light of them. With curriculum theory and discourse analysis as theoretical and methodological framework, I examine governmental policy documents from the 1960s to the current curriculum (Lgr11). The result shows that the introduction of MTI (named “home language”) in Swedish school in the 1970s was a part of an immigration policy directed towards immigrant children in order to compensate their special needs. It was argued that mother tongue was crucial for children's personal development and learning. The subject was aimed at all pupils with the home language other than Swedish and was seen as “almost mandatory”. However, the effects of MTI became questioned in the 1980-90s, which led to decreased access to MTI for students that did not belong to national minority groups. The status of the subject was weakened; in fact, it had no natural place in the school schedule. Under this period, the individual’s freedom of choice became valued more than the equality among students. The third period of the MTI history started in the late 1990s when the government articulated its willingness to raise the status of the subject. At present, the practice of MTI is regulated not only by the curriculum but also by the school law and the language law. MTI is currently a part of language policy, which is aimed at language pluralism. Indeed, the development of bilingualism has been stated as the goal of MTI in every curriculum since Lgr69. In the meantime, other language subjects do not aim at promoting bilingualism. This means that bilingualism is something that minority groups should strive for, but nothing majority students need. The current curriculum emphasizes the mother tongue’s significance for language acquisition and for learning in general. The focus still lies on the mother tongue’s importance for individuals but not for the society. Moreover, there are no connections mentioned between MTI and future studies and job opportunities, as the case is for other language subjects. By comparing syllabuses for other school languages I concluded that MTI is constructed as a kind of support subject, rather than as a regular language subject.

An analysis of lesson plan design for teaching ESL learners with limited English language proficiency / B. Slater

Slater, Brenche January 2011 (has links)
According to the Constitution of South Africa (1996), as well as the Schools Act of South Africa (1996), everyone has the right to education in the language of their choice. The advantage of being educated in one’s home language is a well-known and accepted as a demonstrated fact (Oosthuizen, Rossouw & De Wet, 2004:22). Unfortunately, Oosthuizen et al. (2004:22) remark that the biggest problem in education today, is that home language education cannot be given to everyone in South Africa. As a result many parents choose English as the Language of Learning and Teaching (LOLT) for their children, since they believe English is the language of empowerment. Although English Second Language (ESL) learners pose a challenge to educators in the class, they still have a right to quality education. Therefore, thorough planning is essential to ensure that these learners are taught according to their needs. The primary aim of this research study was to determine if primary school educators designed their lesson planning to accommodate ESL learners with a limited English proficiency. The primary aim could only be determined if the following sub-aims were successfully analysed: *To determine through a literature investigation which specific language barriers ESL learners, with limited English language proficiency, experience during a lesson. *To determine through a literature investigation why lesson planning is important; *To determine to what extent educators accommodate language barriers to learning of ESL learners, with a limited English language proficiency, in their lesson plans. *To determine how educators reflect on their lesson plan, in order to determine whether ESL learners, with limited English language proficiency, coped with the lesson. *To establish which modifications, if any, educators make after reflection to accommodate ESL learners with limited English language proficiency in the follow lesson planning? A Qualitative research method was followed during the study. Data was collected for the research study by doing a document analysis and semi-structured interviews with primary school educators who are currently in the teaching profession and have ESL learners in their class. A convenience sample was used, where the nearest parallel medium school was chosen with participants readily available. The following findings emerged from the study: According to the literature study, the most common specific language barriers which ESL learners with limited English proficiency experience in the classroom are: *Experience it difficult to express themselves in English; *Educators disparity in language between learners and educators; *a limited English vocabulary; and *struggling with comprehension of English. Findings of the empirical study showed that the participants do not plan for accommodations for ESL learners who may experience barriers to learning. They indicated that since English is the LOLT of the school and because they feel that the learners should be proficient in the language they do not need to plan for possible misunderstandings or communication problems that could occur because of a language barrier. However, they did acknowledge that a limited vocabulary and ways of expression can cause communication problems. / MEd, Learner Support, North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2012

Squamous cell carcinoma of the oral tongue : studies of biomarkers connected to human papillomavirus infection, epithelial to mesenchymal transition and locoregional metastatis

Sgaramella, Nicola January 2017 (has links)
Background: Oral Tongue Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OTSCC) is the most frequent and aggressive carcinoma in the head and neck region. Its incidence has increased during the last decades, especially in young patients (≤40 years) mainly female. These young patients have either not been exposed to the traditional risk factors for this disease, or have a much reduced duration of exposure than the typical OTSCC patient. The reasons behind this increasing incidence remain unknown. The aims of this thesis were to analyse the presence and possible role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in oral tongue cancer in correlation with its surrogate marker p16 and its receptor syndecan-1. Other aims were to evaluate expression of EMT (epithelial to mesenchymal transition) - related markers, such as E-cadherin, β-catenin, CK5 and CK19, and to address the potential predictive role of podoplanin in the loco-regional metastatic process. Clinical parameters including age, sex, geographical distribution, relapse, tumour staging and grading were also investigated for a possible correlation with biomarker expression and prediction of survival rate and therapeutic strategy. Materials and methods: More than one hundred samples of OTSCC coming from two University Hospitals of two different countries (Sweden and Italy) were analysed. HPV presence was evaluated by in situ hybridisation for detection of the high-risk HPV 16 and indirectly by immunohistochemistry (IHC) of its surrogate marker p16. Expression of the HPV receptor syndecan-1 and the EMT biomarkers E-cadherin, β-catenin, CK5, CK19 were also evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Samples were scored using a quick score (QS), taking both number and intensity of cells stained into account. Podoplanin expression was investigated at both protein and RNA level. Results: Tumour size and lymph node metastasis correlated to both overall and disease-free survival. Despite variable expression of the syndecan-1 receptor, HPV 16 was not detected in any sample analysed, excluding a possible association with p16, which was expressed in 33% of the cases. All EMT-related markers were commonly expressed in tongue cancer. Data showed E-cadherin to be an independent prognostic factor with higher expression associated with poor overall survival. Notably, E-cadherin, β-catenin and CK5 directly correlated to each other. Multivariate analysis of clinical data demonstrated that age of the patient is an independent prognostic factor with younger patients showing a worse survival rate. Patients younger than 40 years also showed significantly higher expression of podoplanin. Data for geographic distribution revealed a difference in expression of E-cadherin between Swedish and Italian patients. Conclusions: In contrast to SCC of the base of the tongue and the tonsil, HPV is not present in OTSCC, excluding HPV infection as a risk factor. Higher levels of E-cadherin and young age is associated with poor survival in OTSCC patients. The different frequency of EMT markers seen between Swedish and Italian patients suggests an important role for the environment and the geographical area in the onset of different molecular patterns of OTSCC.
