Tourist guiding in the global South : how “Incredible” is India?Botha, Christoffel Rudolph January 2020 (has links)
Tourist guides are located at the coalface of the tourism industry and occupy an
extraordinary position within the contemporary demand and supply chain, seeing that
they have the ability to enhance, manage and orchestrate the tourists sought after
“unique” experience through their interpretation and commentary on tour. Within this
context, most regard the tourist guide as an “ambassador” and “custodian” of a
specific country‟s destination image – with India being no exception. This dissertation
explores the complexity and multifaceted-nature of the tourist guiding phenomenon
in a global South context, by considering the tourist guide of India as an international
tourist guiding best practice example. The investigation will also evaluate key
components and practical areas of India‟s tourist guiding domain. That consists of
the country‟s national tourism and tourist guiding environments, legislative and
regulatory frameworks, educational and training components, quality assurance
mechanisms, as well as all other integral functional areas associated with the sector.
These various research areas, along with the genesis of guiding, the various roles
and responsibilities of a tourist guide, and the contextualisation of “international
tourist guiding best practice”, all form the main components of the dissertation. / Dissertation (MSocSci)--University of Pretoria, 2020. / Historical and Heritage Studies / MSocSci / Unrestricted

Dags att kasta loss? / Time to sail away?Dellve, Sofia January 2023 (has links)
Dags att kasta loss? (Time to sail away?) explores the area of Smögen, Bohuslän, Swedenfrom a perspective of visual communication and sustainable tourism. As a person with aconnection to the area, this project grew from a wish to care for its present and future. Inthe beginning of the project, I only knew I wanted to use my role as a visual communicatorto protect and teach of the local ecosystems by growing curiosity and responsibility withintourists visiting during high season. Through the help of local collaborators, I could latersteer the focus towards littering by boat tourists as it is an ongoing problem around one ofthe most visited attractions; Smögenbryggan. Using storytelling and easily recognizableelements of Smögen as tools, the result is an illustrated sign highlighting the problem andpotential consequences of littering in the area. It aims to leave the target group with a senseof self-awareness in their inhabiting of the space and a sustainable mindset to reduce litteringin the water.

Proposing An Alternative Framework For Feasibility Studies For Large Public Tourism Investments: A Quantitative Analysis Of TheKock, Marcelinio 01 January 2007 (has links)
Numerous studies in the hospitality field have focused on the importance of the convention industry to the economic well being of the local tourism industry. Because of intense competition between convention centers, destinations are practicing strategies of expanding their convention facilities and related infrastructure. Unfortunately, many of these expansions appear to have been based on feasibility studies that failed to present rigorous reviews and examinations regarding alleged claims of positive impacts and over-optimistic operational pro-forma statements. The main objective of this study is to propose an alternative framework for feasibility studies, which consists of an updated, rigorous methodology to calculate a more comprehensive picture, on what convention centers can deliver on public and private investment. Data from the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC) in Orlando, Florida were used for assessing this proposed framework.

Qualitative symbology: an evaluation of the pictorial signs of the National Park Service as cartographic symbolsJohnson, Gregory B. January 1983 (has links)
This study examines whether the use of pictorial signs as cartographic symbols are aids for map users in the comprehension of intended referent meaning. A history of the development and use of pictorial signs as cartographic symbols is traced from the origins of international highway signage to the Pictorial Sign/Symbol system of the National Park Service. The theoretical basis for examining qualitative symbolism in cartography is outlined as are the methodological evolution of the study and principles of symbol design. The NPS signs are tested in and out of a map environment to determine communication effectiveness. Results indicate that the NPS signs perform well as cartographic symbols for American college students and that map legends are used when provided. It is suggested that future testing of pictorial symbology might use semiotic and psychophysical research approaches to examine other coexisting symbol systems and discover more specific design principles for pictorial symbols. / Master of Science
