Reflecting on multi-, inter- and trans-disciplinary (MIT) research at the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT)Kokt, D., Lategan, L.O.K., Orkin, F.M. January 2012 (has links)
Published Article / In their research as well as their teaching, universities of technology (UoTs) expect to be infused by the application of technology and to be integrally related to the world of work. At the same time, research at UoTs is characteristically innovatory, in the specific sense of transforming research discoveries into products or services that are user-oriented and commercially viable. Since practical problems and user needs do not respect disciplinary boundaries it follows, firstly, that such research at a UoT will in some sense not respect disciplinary boundaries, i.e. it will have to connect, cross, or integrate traditional disciplines. This paper seeks accordingly conceptually to differentiate the relevant senses of multi-, inter- and trans-disciplinary (MIT) research. It then characterises the fourteen current research programmes at Central University of Technology (CUT) in these regards, comparing the findings from interviews with the programme leaders with the insights of the authors.
Secondly, in that most research at UoTs is also expected to be innovatory, it is demanded of researchers that they also master the skill of researching the feasible applications of findings, developing products, and envisaging commercialisation; and handing the stakeholder relationships that arise in these interactions. The interviews further indicate the extent to which the respective programmes have moved down the MIT road. They also reveal that the challenges that are faced by the programmes are overwhelming generic rather than specifically MIT-related. Some strategic recommendations are extracted from the findings.

Teacher - occupational therapist collaboration in the implementation of a classroom approach to enhance inclusive education in primary mainstream schools: A case studyArendse, Patricia January 2019 (has links)
Magister Scientiae (Occupational Therapy) - MSc(OT) / The collaboration between occupational therapists and teachers within the classroom is a
relatively new practice in South Africa and few literature sources can be found reporting on
studies in this regard specifically on descriptions of relevant models for such collaboration.
There is a need for a better understanding of how occupational therapists and teachers can work
collaboratively within a classroom approach, together address learners’ needs and so make the
curriculum accessible to all learners. According to South Africa’s key education policies, all
children can learn and need support. Inclusive education acknowledges the diversity of learners
and that each learner learns differently.

Constructing Computational Models Of Nature For Architecture: A Case On Transcoding The Intelligence Of CactusErdogan, Elif 01 February 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The environment of knowledge exchange between computation and biology elicits a
contemporary approach towards architecture. Computation, as an overarching mode of
thinking, instructs the analysis, understanding and reinterpretation of the un-formal
structure of natural organizations (such as systematic construct, information flow, and
process through time) for architectural form generation. Consequently, the computing
theory originates a mind-shift where processes, relations, and dependencies are a major
concern for reconsidering and re-comprehending the environment. Besides, computation
presents universal modes of thinking and tools for modeling, within which transdisciplinary
studies and knowledge interchange between distinct disciplines are
flourished.
This thesis will discuss architectural form generation through interpreting computation
as &ldquo / transcoding&rdquo / and an interface, while nature will be regarded as a &ldquo / model&rdquo / and a
source for learning. A case study will be conducted by analyzing cactus plants and their
common generative logic in the framework of computation. Consequently, the produced
computational model of cactus plants will be scrutinized for probable outcomes,
questioning what such a re-interpretation of natural systems may imply for architecture.

Vestiging langs die Vaalrivier in die omgewing van die Vredefortkoepel, 1840-2012 / Claudia GouwsGouws, Claudia January 2013 (has links)
The settlement history of the Vredefort Dome can be described as a process of
cultural development. The Vaal River hydrosphere, which was for many years a
prestigious settlement site, initially attracted large scale game and later livestock
farmers. The drifts were a central part of a network of early strategic
communication routes and outspans. From 1838, pioneer settlement, farm
occupation and agricultural development followed, and the area eventually
entered an agriculture-mining era. Gold-mining stimulated the regional economy
and also played a significant role in the development of towns in the area. The
Vaal River did not play a significant role from a mining perspective, but featured
more prominently in the development of villages and, in a sense, served as a
political boundary. The location of the water source often determined where people settled permanently. It also decided the position of the house and yard. From the outset, riparian dwellers attempted to manipulate the flow of the river by creating dams and utilising water for irrigation and domestic purposes. Drought conditions also left historical traces; water management projects upstream transformed the Vaal
River into a steadily flowing stream, which led to the economic and cultural
segregation of north and south. Man's fear associated with drought (too little
water), floods (too much water), meteorology (the necessity of water), and the role
of the supernatural (divining water) and superstition (the water snake stories) were
expressed in the interaction between people and this water environment. A wide
variety of people with distinct cultures lived alongside each other in the area.
Western and African cultural goods, as well as customs and beliefs, were mutually
adopted by these different cultural groups as a result of this contact.
The way land has been used in the Dome area has evolved over the years. The
culling of game made way for the permanent establishment of the livestocktravelling
farmer. Hereafter prolonged drought conditions destroyed pastures and, consequently, large areas of land were ploughed for agricultural use.
Agriculture, which is more labour intensive and needs more water for irrigation,
was replaced by game farming, which is less labour intensive and requires less
water This world heritage site has drawn global interest and ecotourism has attracted
visitors to the Vaal River area. The riparian dwellers, however, remain victims of
up-stream industrial and sewage pollution; in future, they are likely to fall prey to
acid mine water pollution, with disastrous consequences. / PhD (History), North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2013

A restorative approach towards school discipline and behavioural conduct in South African schools: a case studyBuys, Irma 09 1900 (has links)
Misconduct, antisocial and offending (criminal) behaviour is becoming a problem in South African schools and maintaining discipline in schools is facing many challenges. Current practices do not solve disciplinary challenges. This study reflects upon the discipline system in South African schools as well as risk factors playing a role in possible offences, by means of a case study. An enormous number of learners are still experiencing difficulties concerning their education because of their disadvantaged position in South Africa. In cases where there are disruptions of the learning process due to ill-discipline and antisocial behaviour, it leads to unsuccessful education in a country where there are already obstacles underlying the foundation of the education system. It is important to have an effective disciplinary system implemented in schools. The discipline system in South African schools, currently, views a learner as an offender, when behaviour is such that it is against the school’s rules. The focus is then on proving the offender guilty and then punishing him/her in order to proof that responsibility is taken by the school for his/her actions. The learner punished, in some cases rebel and this leads to further divergent behaviour. In the current school discipline system, the victim plays no role in the process and the changes needed in the discipline process should include the victim. The discipline process should move from a punitive to a restorative system. In a restorative discipline system, intervention plays an important role. The study also places focus on identifying possible risk behaviour at an early age and explored risk factors that may play a role in the management of discipline related concerns and conduct. This process plays a significant role in the intervention process, as learners can be identified and counselled before offending behaviour takes place or intervention can take place the moment that the learner is involved in deviant behaviour. Dynamic risk factors, for example antisocial friends, antisocial behaviour and lack of respect for authority can be addressed through restorative rather than punitive intervention. This study was also directed to develop a South African theoretical framework to be used by schools and the Department of Education, as an alternative to the current punitive system through the application of restorative practices as a support to troubled learners. / Criminal and Procedural Law

NATURAL HYSTERIA (a queer response to ecocide): An exercise in Living Art, Participatory Rituals and Queer Ecology -or- How I discovered Geyserbird, the Transgender Shaman withinBell, Graham 05 November 2018 (has links)
[EN] Natural Hysteria... is a trans-disciplinary practice led investigation which documents the process of production of a cycle of text based performances -rituals, street actions, theatrical presentations, and video presentations, songs and workshops.
It is an artistic response to the deterioration of our environment and the attacks on cultural and biological diversity being carried out by a capitalist system based on the accumulation of wealth at all costs which is leading us to the border of an ecological collapse.
It proceeds through an analyses of other dissident artistic practices which share a queer, feminist postcolonial or ecological perspective linking them to the concepts explored in my work in order to contextualise it in the expanded field of the contemporary arts.
The alternative "hysteria" that forms the conceptual basis of this project has its beginnings in the dawn of the modern age and traces a history of domination of those "others": focusing mainly on women, gender and sexual dissidents, people of colour and animals.
The exploitation of natural and human resources is a consequence of a worldview based on the establishment of binary oppositions that allow the "other" to be classified and dominated.
For example: man / woman, white / black, hetero / homosexual, culture / nature. The construction of these "others" - the "feminine", the "native", the "queer", "nature" - excludes these subjects from the construction of a master identity that, nevertheless, depends on these categories for its existence.
In the Renaissance the fields of the sciences and the humanities were not separated. The mechanistic view of the world had not completely overcome pagan beliefs in magic and in a spiritual force which resides in all beings.
This vision was a relic of the pre-Christian era and would finally be eradicated by the united forces of State and Church through the processes of the Inquisition, the witch hunts, colonization and the new religion of "Science".
All of these processes have produced a huge change in our relationship with nature, currently seen as a totally inert entity. Nature is no longer part of our being and has became nothing more than raw material.
Colonisation continues today under a neoliberal politics which uses the concept of development to requisition territory from indigenous people in order to exploit its natural resources. This is justified by qualifying these people as primitive because their way of life is based on living in equilibrium with nature.
The function of a politically engaged artistic practise is to challenge the notion that no alternative exists to the current system.
The theoretical and artistic framework of this investigation has led to the development of a performative alter ego, the transgender shaman Geyserbird, and to the configuration of a series of performances which included participatory rituals, installations with presence and the queer appropriation of abandoned industrial spaces.
The transgender shaman is a spiritual being who goes beyond the limitations of the binary gender system and connects to indigenous cultures. The development of a criminological intervention model for the Rosslyn industrial environment in Tshwane, Gauteng, South AfricaPretorius, William Lyon 02 1900 (has links)
The problem investigated in this research is the ongoing crime threat and the extreme risks which impact negatively on the sustainability of the Rosslyn Industry - the industrial hub of Tshwane in the Gauteng Provence of South Africa. Businesses in Rosslyn are desperate for a solution that will mitigate these crime threats and risks, and ensure the future sustainability of this important industrial community. An intervention model is urgently required to prevent this type of crime, not only as a short term solution but as a sustainable long term intervention.
This research study initiated the collaboration required for the successful implementation of a Crime Prevention Intervention Model (CPIM) in the Rosslyn industrial environment. The intended crime prevention model has been designed in such a way that it addresses the entire environment of crime that prevails in the Rosslyn area involving both the offender and the victim. This design is rooted in the ontology of Environmental Criminology and more specific on the applied epistemology of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED).
Participants in this project are representatives who are responsible for all security functions in both big businesses and small enterprises. And with their dedicated assistance the research findings disclosed the current crime status of the Rosslyn environment regarding the threat, risk, security vulnerabilities, controls and needs:
• Crime and its causal factors, in Rosslyn, are rife and no noteworthy action has been implemented to mitigate these threats.
• Collaboration between Rosslyn role players (neighbours, local government and law enforcement) is for all purposes non-existent.
• And to complicate matters even more, knowledge of how to effectively mitigate crime is limited and handicapped by the re-active physical security methods currently being used.
• The implication of these findings is that the status quo will eventually render business in Rosslyn unsustainable. Thus a CPIM in Rosslyn is inevitable.
What was crucial to this research and to the CTPED design is the detailed sourcing of accurate data addressing the experiences and the needs the respondents identified in the current Rosslyn crime situation concerning; status, the threat, risk, security, vulnerabilities and controls.
In order to achieve this level of data sourcing and assimilation, the essential features of the research method were based on a mixed approach where quantitative and qualitative methods were implemented in parallel. The diverse fields, sources and respondent mix required for a Rosslyn Industry CPIM also necessitated a MIT (Multi,-Inter,-Trans,-Disciplinary) approach. This MIT requirement is successfully facilitated through the applied criminological CPTED approach.
The CPIM is based on the combined outcomes of the following three research fields:
• Field-one: Environmental criminology theories are researched through an in-depth literature review to demonstrate the criminological grounding of crime prevention and to guide its application through the development of an applied CPTED SUITE.
• Field-two: Supply Chain Security (SCS) are researched through an in-depth literature review to establish its criminological relevance and applications. SCS requirements are identified and built into the Field-Three research process and tested for relevance and for incorporation in the CPTED SUITE.
• Field-three: Based on a mixed research process, using a custom designed Criminological Risk Analyses tool incorporating scheduled interviews and questionnaires, the crime and needs profile of the Rosslyn Industry are uncovered and analysed. The results are filtered through the CPTED SUITE to indicate the correct criminological approach for mitigating the identified problems and needs.
Even though this study takes an applied crime preventative approach, the criminological-philosophical mould of crime prevention is imperative for the effective application of the CPTED. Security and crime prevention training, planning and application, without this approach will remain underdeveloped and outdated.
Finally the underlying intention of this research is for this Crime Prevention Intervention Model (CPIM) to be adapted and implemented and to serve as a guide or a benchmark for security practitioners in any industrial environment that has the same crime threats and crime risk challenges. / Criminology and Security Science / D. Model-Based Early Validation and Verification of Design Decisions for Cross-Disciplinary StakeholdersStenlund, Alexander January 2024 (has links)
Systems engineering becomes more challenging as system engineers must tackle increasingly growing and complex systems while balancing stakeholder needs, dependability, costs, and much more. Engineering decisions at early stages become important as their impact can affect the product's entire life cycle. Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) is a way to capture this system complexity and explore how different engineering decisions affect a system. With this in mind, this thesis will explore how MBSE can capture engineering decisions and their impact at early stages of development and what insight can be gained into a system. This is done by exploratively creating a concept, using it on a toy example to get direct feedback on its performance, and refining the concept before evaluating it in a case study. The case study evaluates the concept in an industrial context through a focus group and receives direct industry feedback. The modelling concept is implemented in Papyrus Eclipse as a Unified Modeling Language (UML) profile to capture concept-specific details and an Eclipse plugin. This implementation is to retrieve and process data from the modelled system. This is used to answer impact questions of choices, such as: "How much does this parameter change if component X is exchanged for another?".The evaluation of the concept was generally positive and gave valuable feedback and possible future directions of the concept. This includes the opinion that a spread sheet gives a better overview of the system and ways to expand the tool though parameterised relations and other suggestions. The thesis in the end presents, one way that MBSE can be used to support the analysis of early cross-disciplinary models, and two major insights which could be gained, namely risk and constraints.
