As tiras de Mafalda no Brasil: tradutores e traduções / Mafalda comic strips in Brazil: translators and translations

Bárbara Zocal da Silva 28 September 2015 (has links)
This research consists in a study of three Brazilian translations from Mafalda comic strips, created by the Argentinian cartoonist Joaquín Salvador Lavado Tejón, known by his pen name Quino. The present investigation is inserted in two perspectives of Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS) (Holmes, 2000 [1972]): function-oriented (based in the context) and product-oriented (text-focused). The three translations chosen were published in different periods: (1) during 1970s, when the first version of Mafalda in Portuguese was published in Brazil by Editora Artenova (RJ); (2) in 1982, made by Mouzar Benedito and edited by Henfil, published by Editora Global (SP); and (3) in 1991, made by Monica Stahel and her team of translators and published by Editora Martins Fontes (SP). Our purpose was to investigate the contexts of production and the linguistic aspects of the translations. Since it is inherent to comics the combination of verbal and iconic elements, it was considered the analysis and the anatomy relevant for the translation (translation-relevant anatomy) proposed by Kaindl (2010), which considers more than the social background of this sort of work and the linguistic aspects, the pictorial and typographic elements. According to this author, the cartoon translation should be comprehended as a result of the specificities of each translation and its social conditions of production and circulation. The thesis was structured through these guidelines. In a first moment, it was intended to identify the main elements of comics language, the genre where Mafalda belongs. An overview of the historic and publishing settings of the character was presented. Afterwards, the Brazilian versions are listed, as well as their context of production and the professionals involved in it. To study the results, it was used the taxonomy of technical procedures of translation that Aubert (1998) created to examine translated texts and the translational gaps between linguistic pairs and modalities of translation. We established fourteen modalities and analyzed the comic strips selected observing each one of these categories, in order to establish a descriptive and comparative profile of each text studied. One of our goals is to look for links between different linguistic profiles from the translations, its contexts of production and the profile of each of its translators. We intend to contribute for the historiography of Spanish-Portuguese translations in Brazil and for the translational descriptive studies of cartoons as a multimodal genre, which specific characteristics have received attention in this field of study for not much more than a decade.

O poder das idéias:- as traduções com objetivos políticos de Carlos Lacerda / The ideas power:- the translations with political aims by Carlos Lacerda

Eliane Euzebio 17 September 2007 (has links)
This dissertation studies a number of the translations of the politician and translator Carlos Lacerda (1914-1977), concentrating on the political intentions behind the translation and also the ways in which he manipulated the translated work in order to achieve his political aims. The study, in which I emphasize the ways in which Lacerda attempted to ideologically manipulate the reader, focuses on Lacerda\'s translations of Il est Moins Cinq (Em cima da hora: a conquista sem guerra), by Suzanne Labin, Julius Caesar (Júlio César), by William Shakespeare and The Triumph (O triunfo), by John Kenneth Galbraith. In addition to initially choosing a work to translate which would reflect the Brazilian situation, Lacerda uses paratexts such as footnotes and postfaces to spread his own political views. The dissertation will stress the importance of these paratexts in and link them to Lacerda\'s critique of the contemporary situation in Brazil. The main theoretical support for the dissertation is taken from the theories of Maria Tymoczko on historical translation studies and Gerard Genette\'s work on paratexts. The Introduction examines links between translation and politics, describing pertinent theories and translators who have made translations with political aims. Chapter 1 provides important biographical details of Carlos Lacerda, describing his careers in journalism, politics, writing and translating - all of which he worked on at the same time. He also started up the Nova Fronteira publishing house, which published his translations. This chapter shows how political events motivated his translations and led him to play a key role in a number of decisive events Chapters 2, 3 and 4 analyze the translations of the works mentioned above, again paying attention to the importance of the work chosen and the paratexts.

French imports : English translations of Molière, 1663-1732

Jones, Suzanne Barbara January 2016 (has links)
This thesis explores the first English translations of Molière's works published between 1663 and 1732 by writers that include John Dryden, Edward Ravenscroft, Aphra Behn, and Henry Fielding. It challenges the idea that the translators straightforwardly plagiarized the French plays and instead argues that their work demonstrates engagement with the dramatic impact and satirical drive of the source texts. It asks how far the process of anglicization required careful examination of the plays' initial French national context. The first part of the thesis presents three fundamental angles of interrogation addressing how the translators dealt with the form of the dramatic works according to theoretical and practical principles. It considers translators' responses to conventions of plot formation, translation methods, and prosody. The chapters are underpinned by comparative assessments of contextual theoretical writings in French and English in order to examine the plays in the light of the evolving theatrical tastes and literary practices occasioned by cross-Channel communication. The second part takes an alternative approach to assessing the earliest translations of Molière. Its four chapters are based on close analysis of culturally significant lexical terms which evoke comically contentious social themes. This enquiry charts the changes in translation-choices over the decades covered by the thesis corpus. The themes addressed, however, were relevant throughout the period in both France and England: marital discord caused by anxieties surrounding cuckoldry and gallantry, the problems of zealous religious ostentation, the dubious professional standing of medical practitioners, and bourgeois social pretension. This part assesses how the key terms in translation were chosen to resonate within the new semantic fields in English, a target language which was coming into close contact with new French terms.

The ordering of senses in English-Xitsonga bilingual dictionaries : Towards logical meaning arrangement in the microstructure

Machimana, Abios Sparks January 2009 (has links)
Thesis (M.A. (Linguistics)) --University of Limpopo, 2009 / In many bilingual dictionaries, translation equivalents reveal some shortcomings with regard to the manner in which they are presented, particularly the English-Xitsonga bilingual dictionaries. Translation equivalents in the microstructure are frequently arranged and are without contextual guidance to assist the user. This way of presentation impedes the dictionary users from retrieving the appropriate and accurate equivalents. The study has, therefore, evaluated the way in which these translation equivalents are arranged. This research study shows that they should be logically and systematically arranged, starting with the translation equivalents that have the highest usage frequency to be user-friendly. The study also suggests that functional equivalence must prevail in English-Xitsonga bilingual dictionaries. The problem of zero-equivalence should also be resolved by giving a comprehensive description of the lemma as a translation equivalent to help the users to understand the lemma better.

Vivere sul serio: Eduardo De Filippo and the Art of Life

Gargiulo, Jennifer January 2006 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / This thesis offers the first English translation of Eduardo De Filippo’s last play, Gli esami non finiscono mai (1973). It analyzes the play in the context of the dramatist’s career and describes the philosophical shift that took place in Eduardo’s dialectic as he progressed from a post-war, neorealist drama like Napoli milionaria! toward the existential reflections present in his last play. Unlike previous studies, this work concentrates on Eduardo’s philosophical journey from neorealism to existential query and identifies the factors that influenced his thinking process. To this end, I have evaluated the plays most relevant to the development of his philosophy and the socio-political context in which they were written. The influence of the Neapolitan traditional dialect theater, along with that of Luigi Pirandello, his American contemporaries, Arthur Miller and Eugene O’Neill, and William Shakespeare, is also examined. Important social issues that directly affected the author, such as the struggle in Italy for the legalization of divorce and the plight of children born out of wedlock, are highlighted to illustrate how they contributed to the disillusionment and pessimism present in Eduardo’s last play. From the rather hopeful ending of Napoli milionaria! Eduardo was reduced at the end of his life to sheer desperation in Gli esami non finiscono mai. Italy had changed but it had not moved on. By focusing on the playwright’s final play, this thesis offers a new perspective on a twentieth century dramatist who is much more complex than is commonly acknowledged. De Filippo is revealed as a dramatist who transcended the Neapolitan comic theatrical traditions he sprang from and created a theater of political and social engagement that endures today.

Multiplicateurs sur les espaces de Banach de fonctions sur un groupe localement compact abélien

Petkova, Violeta 14 December 2005 (has links) (PDF)
On étudie les multiplicateurs, c'est-à-dire les opérateurs bornés qui commutent avec les translations sur un espace de fonctions sur un groupe localement compact abélien G. On obtient pour tout multiplicateur un symbole essentiellement borné sur un ensemble de morphismes continus sur G, lié au spectre simultané des translations. Nous établissons aussi des résultats analogues pour les opérateurs de Wiener-Hopf (resp. Toeplitz) sur des espaces de fonctions sur R+ (resp. Z+).
