A avaliação da qualidade metodológica foi realizada através do COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurements INstruments-COSMIN. / The objective of this study was to perform the cross-cultural adaptation of MAS for Brazil and analyse the reliability (inter-rater and test-retest), measurement error (inter-rater and test-retest), internal consistency and construct validity. Furthermore, was performed a systematic review to determine the validity of the health measurements instruments that assess motor function after stroke, available in Brazil. The systematic review followed a pre-established protocol and was performed by two independent evaluators considering studies on measurement properties of instruments that assessed motor function after stroke that resulted of cultural adaptation or Brazilian creation. The assessment of methodological quality was performed using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurements Instruments-COSMIN. The process of cross-cultural adaptation of the MAS was done in 5 stages following standardized guidelines: translation, synthesis of translations, back translation, experts’ committee review and pretesting. The scale was also submitted to the opinion of Physiotherapists of different states of the country, through a Delphi study. The analysis of measurement properties involved the participation of 100 individuals with a clinical diagnosis of primary or recurrent stroke for at least 30 days, with the presence of hemiparesis / hemiplegia, age greater than 21 years and both sexes. The reliability was analysed through the Kappa coefficient, the measurement error through Bland & Altman plots test and the internal consistency and construct validity were verified by the Rasch analysis. The adequate process of cultural adaptation and the Delphi study ensured the semantic and cultural appropriateness of MAS to Brazil. The Kappa coefficient values for the reliability inter-examiners and test-retest was 0.73 (varying in items 0.79 and 1.00) and 0.82 (varying in items 0.86 and 1.00), respectively. The Bland Altman test demonstrated adequate agreement. As for the analysis of the measurement properties, the Rasch analysis demonstrated absence of the “floor” and “ceiling” effects (4% and 9%, respectively) and the capacity of the instrument to divide the sample into more than four levels of ability. The item 4 “Sitting to standing” showed erratic standard (MnSq infit=1.44; z=2.6). Although, the presence of only one erratic item did not affect the unidimensionality of the instrument, which showed adequate internal consistence and construct validity. This way, the MAS-Brasil was constituted as an adapted and valid instrument and can be used in clinical contexts and in researches in patients after stroke.

An improvement of the quality of the translated Sesotho junior South African individual scale (GIQ-8) test items

Bouwer, Lize 01 October 2014 (has links)
M.Ed. (Educational Psychology) / South Africa can be metaphorically described as a quilt – a combination of diverse languages, ethnicities, beliefs and cultural practices, carefully stitched together and passed on from one generation to the next. South African children grow and develop surrounded by the comfort and warmth of this colourful quilt. Although this provides a rich and dynamic learning environment, we face the challenge of providing equal quality education and educational psychological services to all our children. Psychological testing aids with the deeper understanding of an individual’s area of development and strengths in order to be able to make informed decisions about appropriate interventions, support and recommendations. However, due to South Africa’s problematic political past, psychological testing is faced with challenges of its own such as unavailability of tests that are culturally sensitive. This study forms part of a longitudinal study which is addressing this challenge by implementing a localized solution to a local problem, at an affordable cost. The Junior South African Intelligence Scale (JSAIS) is an instrument which measures the intelligence of 3- to 7-year-old children, and is currently standardised for Afrikaans and English-speaking children only. In an effort to eliminate the language barrier and make it more applicable of our South African population, the JSAIS GIQ-8 was translated into Sesotho and isiZulu. In previous studies, the translated tests were administered and a Rasch measure of analysis used to determine the quality of the items in relation to the ability of the participants. This exploratory qualitative study focuses on acquiring recommendations from a panel of people experienced in administering the JSAIS with the aim to improve the quality of the Sesotho JSAIS. Findings show that the Sesotho used in the initial translation is a pure form of Sesotho and participants are concerned that children living in townships around the country may not understand this well. The participants recommend administration to a wider sample group to learn more about the Sesotho dialects used in different regions of South Africa. A Sesotho manual needs to be added to guide administrators in regional word use and in providing standard instructions. The answer sheets needs to be adapted. Some of the pictures on the picture cards need to be changed and the Sesotho questions on those picture cards added as appendices...

Upper body pose recognition and estimation towards the translation of South African sign language

Achmed, Imran January 2011 (has links)
Masters of Science / Recognising and estimating gestures is a fundamental aspect towards translating from a sign language to a spoken language. It is a challenging problem and at the same time, a growing phenomenon in Computer Vision. This thesis presents two approaches, an example-based and a learning-based approach, for performing integrated detection, segmentation and 3D estimation of the human upper body from a single camera view. It investigates whether an upper body pose can be estimated from a database of exemplars with labelled poses. It also investigates whether an upper body pose can be estimated using skin feature extraction, Support Vector Machines (SVM) and a 3D human body model. The example-based and learning-based approaches obtained success rates of 64% and 88%, respectively. An analysis of the two approaches have shown that, although the learning-based system generally performs better than the example-based system, both approaches are suitable to recognise and estimate upper body poses in a South African sign language recognition and translation system. / South Africa

Hai Jui dismissed from office : its role in the great poletarian cultural revolution

Ansley, Clive Malcolm January 1968 (has links)
In November of 1965, the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, was launched in China when a Shanghai newspaper editor, Yao Wen-yuan, published an attack on the play which is translated here, Hai Jui Dismissed from Office. The fact that this event constituted the beginning of what later became a political struggle of vast proportions was recognized only belatedly by most Western analysts. When the Cultural Revolution moved into high gear with the launching of the Red Guard movement in the spring of 1966, vague references were made in some Western commentaries to the fact that the explosion seemed to have been ignited, by the public exposure of a drama which had purportedly satirized the Communist Party and Mao Tse-tung. No one appeared to have any certainty about exactly what the play had said and in what way it satirized Mao and the Party. As far as I am aware, this is the first translation of the entire text of the play, or any part of it, into English. Aside from simply translating the text of the play, the purpose of this thesis is to analyze the events of late 1965 and early 1966 and place them both in chronological order and in political perspective. In this way, it is clearly shown how the attack on Wu Han led to attacks on other "bourgeois" writers and intellectuals. Eventually, this latter group was linked to high officials in the Peking Municipal Committee of the Chinese Communist Party. Finally, the "cultural" aspect of the Cultural Revolution gave way to a full-fledged political battle within the Party itself. / Arts, Faculty of / Asian Studies, Department of / Graduate

Greek translations of French literature : a contribution to the recording and the study of their presence in the Greek literary world from 1900 to 2010.

Sofronidou, Foteini 11 December 2014 (has links)
This study covers the Greek translations of French literature and their presence in the Greek literary world during the entire twentieth century and at the dawn of the twenty-first. The finding that translations play a crucial role in the absorption of this literature in Greece, and that, to date, their recording within the examined period is fragmented, set a research goal for the fullest possible, accurate and documented recording of any Greek translations of works of French literature (prose - plays - poetry), published in our country in the period from 1900 to 2010.The quantitative and qualitative processing of certain parameters, such as the year of publication of a translation, the translated author, the translator, the translated work and the publisher, as well as the relevant conclusions, intend to contribute to the presentation and overview of the overall image of this translation sector.

Évrard, Anaëlle 12 December 2013 (has links)
With the translations of Baudelaire’s Spleen de Paris (Petits poèmes en prose) in Spain from the 1880’s to the 1930’s as its main object, this thesis intends to examine their historical, literary and publishing context in order to determine how the book was received. The corpus includes Castilian and Catalan translations and considers their insertion into their target literary systems in Havana, Madrid and Barcelona as well as their main textual characteristics. A particular focus is placed on the translators as active recipients of the text since they are both its readers and its rewriters. Their portraits shed light on the translators’ condition, be they renowned or unknown, at a time when translation progressively acquires more dignity, at least in speeches, while translators are still largely scorned and underpaid. The translators themselves tend to waver between belittling this task, so rarely gratifying, and giving in to its temptation. These portraits also convey their conception of translation, France and Baudelaire to get a better understanding of what was at stake individually in the work they accomplished. The reception of the genre of the prose poem is addressed mainly through analysing the publishing choices and interpreting the prefaces of the studied versions.
