SAFETY IMPLICATIONS OF ROADWAY DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT: NEW EVIDENCE AND INSIGHTS IN THE TRADITIONAL AND EMERGING (AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE) OPERATING ENVIRONMENTS

Sikai Chen (6941321) 13 August 2019 (has links)

In the context of highway safety factors, road geometrics and pavement condition are of particular interest to highway managers as they fall within their direct control and therefore can be addressed through highway projects. In spite of the preponderance of econometric modeling in highway safety research, there still remain areas worthy of further investigation. These include 1) the lack of sufficient feedback to roadway preservation engineers regarding the impacts of road-surface condition on safety; 2) the inadequate feedback to roadway designers on optimal lane and shoulder width allocation; 3) the need for higher predictive capability and reliability of models that analyze roadway operations; and 4) the lack of realistic simulations to facilitate reliable safety impact studies regarding autonomous vehicles (AV). In an attempt to contribute to the existing knowledge in this domain and to throw more light on these issues, this dissertation proposes a novel framework for enhanced prediction of highway safety that incorporates machine learning and econometrics with optimization to evaluate and quantify the impacts of safety factors. In the traditional highway operating environment, the proposed framework is expected to help agencies improve their safety analysis. Using an Indiana crash dataset, this dissertation implements the framework, thereby 1) estimating the safety impacts of the road-surface condition with advanced econometric specifications, 2) optimizing space resource allocations across highway cross-sectional elements, and 3) predicting the fatality status of highway segments using machine learning algorithms. In addition, this dissertation discusses the opportunities and the expected safety impacts and benefits of AV in the emerging operating environment. The dissertation also presents a proposed deep learning-based autonomous driving simulation framework that addresses the limitations of AV testing and evaluation on in-service roads and test tracks.

Kombinuotųjų vežimų Lietuvos teritorija plėtros technologinių galimybių tyrimas / Investigation of technological possibilities for the development of combined carriages through the territory of Lithuania

Vasilis Vasiliauskas, Aidas 14 October 2004 (has links)
Geographical location of Lithuania determines its role as a transit country. This fact obliges to assure an efficient movement of the goods through the territory of Lithuania. One of the directions to evolve transport sector can be the development of combined road-rail transport (CT). The purpose of the dissertation – on the basis of analysis of scientific works and best practical experience in the field of CT to determine means that stipulate development of CT, arrange them according to the particularity of Lithuanian transport sector, and create a model for the development of combined carriages through the territory of Lithuania. In order to reach this purpose, following tasks are accomplished: 1.Determined all combined road-rail transport elements and their importance; 2.Investigated current market of CT in the EU and technological measures that assure development of these carriages; 3.Carried out an investigation of capabilities of Lithuanian transport system stressing an interaction of road and rail transport; 4.Created model which involves linkage of infrastructure of different transport modes in to one network and assures an optimal exploitation of infrastructure by flows of different transport modes. 5.Explained technological factors that influence possibilities to develop combined carriages through the territory of Lithuania.

Trumpųjų nuotolių laivybos ES tyrimai ir jos optimizavimo galimybės / Research and optimization of EU shortsea shipping

Jonkus, Martynas 08 December 2006 (has links)
Shortsea shipping promotion and optimization issues have been repeatedly emphasized by the EU Commission and long-term researchers of the segment. The problem we are facing today is, that many commercial players still wrongly approach shortsea shipping with scepticism, as a bit outdated mode of transport; besides there are numerous administrative obstacles and factors involved that impede ultimate integration of shortsea shipping into the existing intermodal and multimodal transport chains. Inadequate infrastructures of port terminals, lack of logistics elements, as well as protectionism related barriers existing in the EU member states, all these urge the necessity to investigate the feasibility and potential of shortsea shipping across the EU.

Vairuotojų rengimo sistemos įtaka eismo efektyvumui / The influence of driver’s training system on traffic efficiency

Navickienė, Marina 26 June 2008 (has links)
Baigiamajame magistro darbe nagrinėjama Lietuvos Respublikos vairuotojų rengimo sistemos įtaka eismo keliais efektyvumui bei eismo jais saugumui, tam pasitelkus ekspertinių tyrimų metodus. Išanalizuota užsienio šalių patirtis šioje srityje bei eismo saugumą reglamentuojantys dokumentai. Išnagrinėti ir susisteminti veiksniai, turintys įtakos vairuotojo patikimumui. Šių veiksnių įtaka: eismo saugumui tirti naudotas respondentų anketinis apklausos metodas. / The final MA thesis deals with the influence of driver’s preparation system in the Republic of Lithuania to efficiency of traffic on roads and safety, by using experimental methods of research. The paper analyzed experience of foreign countries in this field and documentation regulating traffic safety. Analysis was also made for systematic factors having influence on the driver’s reliability. Impact of these factors: a questionnaire survey was used to investigate traffic safety as understood by the respondents.

Lengvojo automobilio stabdžių antiblokavimo sistemos tyrimas / Research of vehicle anti-lock brake system

Filipovičiūtė, Greta 27 June 2005 (has links)
In master work accomplished research of vehicle anti-lock brake system. ABS systems are simple, more complicated and complicated. In this work is separated summarize structural schemes of ABS systems and selected all parameters, which impacts ABS operating. In this work the experiment is done with computer ABS modeling cooperation. During experiment persuade that model only slightly differ from results of experiment done by Bosch company. Also in experiment established optimal comparative allowable wheels slip value for different road surfaces.
