Adaptive router bypass techniques to enhance core network efficiency

Internet traffic is increasing exponentially, driven by new technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT) and rich streaming media. The traditional IP router becomes a bottleneck for further Internet expansion due to its high power consumption and inefficiency in processing the growing traffic. Router bypass has been introduced to overcome capacity limitations and the processing costs of IP routers. With router bypass, a portion of traffic is provisioned to bypass the router and is switched by the transport layer. Router bypass has shown to provide significant savings in network costs. These advantages are limited by a reduction in the statistical multiplexing associated with the subdivision of the available bandwidth typically into bypass and traditional portions thus limiting the interest in bypass techniques. This thesis will explore multiple techniques to enhance the efficiency of router bypass. The main goals are to address the issue of the reduction in statistical multiplexing and to add a dynamic approach to the router bypass mechanism. The recent advancements in the Optical Transport Network (OTN) play a major role in the transport network. This proposal takes full advantage of OTN in the router-bypassing context by applying recent developments such as Hitless Adjustments ODUflex (HAO), which allow the provisioned channels to be adjusted without re-establishing the connections. In addition, it will allow the bypassing mechanism to be flexible enough to meet the traffic behaviour needs of the future. This thesis will study multiple approaches to enhance the router bypass mechanism including: an adaptive provisioning style using various degrees of provisioning granularities and controlling the provisioning based on traffic behaviour. In addition, this thesis will explore the impact of automation in Software-Defined Networking (SDN) on router bypass. The application-driven infrastructure in SDN is moving the network to be more adaptive, which paves the way for an enhanced implementation of router bypass. Many challenges still face the industry to fully integrate the three layers (3, 2, and 1) to transform the current infrastructure into an adaptive application driven network. The IP router (layer 3) provisions and restores the connection regardless of the underlying layers (layer 2 and 1) and the transport layer does the same regardless of the IP layer. Although allowing every layer to develop without being constrained by other layers offers a huge advantage, it renders the transport layer static and not fully aware of the traffic behaviour. It is my hope that this thesis is a step forward in transforming the current network into a dynamic, efficient and responsive network. A simulation has been built to imitate the router bypassing concept and then many measurements have been recorded. / Graduate

Designing multimodal public transport networks using metaheuristics

The public transport system in South Africa is in a precarious state, capturing no more than 50% of the passenger market. The three public transport modes that are currently utilized—train, bus, and minibus-taxi—are competing for market share instead of complementing one another. Furthermore, most public transport networks have not been properly redesigned over the past three decades. Improvements were initiated reactively in the past: transit stops and routes were added or removed from the network when demand fluctuated. This reactive process has diminished the confidence of commuters in the public transport networks, forcing commuters to use private transport. A proactive redesign method is needed—one that includes all the modes of public transport, and anticipates an increase in demand and rapid development in geographic areas, while ensuring good accessibility to the network. Current network design models do not include multiple modes of public transport, and are based on the geographical layout of developed cities and their particularities, which makes them unsuitable for the South African environment with its unique land use disparities. This dissertation proposes a multimodal network design model that is capable of designing real world and large scale networks for the South African metropolitan areas. The City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality (CTMM) transport network area was used to develop and test the model, which consists of four components. The Geographic Information System (GIS) component has a central role in storing, manipulating, and exchanging the geographic data within the model. For the GIS the appropriate input data is identified, and a design for the geo-database is proposed. The Population Generation Algorithm (PGA) component translates the demographic data into point data representing the transit demand in the study area. The Bus Stop Placement Algorithm (BSPA) component is a metaheuristic that searches for near-optimal solutions for the placement of bus stops in the study area. A novel solution approach proposed in this dissertation uses geographic data of commuters to evaluate the bus stop placement in the study area. The Multimodal Network Design Algorithm (MNDA) component also employs a metaheuristic, enabling the design of near-optimal multimodal networks. The addition of multiple modes to the Transit Network Design Problem (TNDP) is also a novel and significant contribution. The two metaheuristic components are first tested on a test network, and subjected to a comprehensive sensitivity analysis. Automatic Generation of Levels of Detail : A Study on the Swedish National Road Database / Automatisk generering av detaljnivåer

When creating a map, the amount of data and which geographical information chosen to bepresented are decided based on the purpose of the map. Trafikverket is responsible for theNational Road Database that is a reference road network with a large amount of dataconnected to it. The database is built at a carriageway level where several links can be usedto represent a single road. In this thesis the database has been studied as well as thepossibilities to create an automatic workflow that creates a generalisation to road level. Someapplications and analyses that use this database are requesting input data of a higher level ofdetail. It is also found important from a cartographic point of view. Possibilities to create alinear referencing for the data between the different levels was studied as well, to make theupdates between the levels easier and not having the need to maintain two differentdatabases. It would make it possible to inherit attributes and the generic features connectedto the network.The first fully automated workflow for a generalisation of an entire map was developed in theNetherlands in 2014. Several other agencies in Sweden and Norway are currently working ongeneralisations as well and using different approaches. Statens Vegvesen, which is theNational Road Agency in Norway, has already implemented the different levels of detail intheir road database. Lantmäteriet currently has a project where their goal is to create a fullyautomated map to easily change to a larger scale.After studying the programs used in other generalisations and which programs Trafikverketnormally use, FME and ArcGIS were chosen to be used in this thesis. A small study area waschosen, and the proper data was collected from the National Road Database. The study wasconducted by a set of experiments and trying different parameter values in order to obtain asatisfactory result.Three different areas where studied, where the goal was to find a sequence of functions thatsuccessfully generalised all the areas. The areas were parallel roads, complex intersectionsand roundabouts. The result consists of a suggested workflow, but alterations hade to bemade manually since it was not possible to find a fully automated generalisation for the areachosen. Therefore, a set of functions and tools that could be developed were collected as wellin the end to make a more automated workflow possible.The result found in this thesis show that if the cartographic generalisations are more studiedand examined it should be possible to get a more automated workflow to create ageneralisation between the different level of detail. However, it might be difficult to get theworkflow fully automated due to the complexity of the intersections. / När en karta skapas baseras mängden data och vilken geografisk information som skaförmedlas beroende på syftet med kartan. Trafikverket ansvarar för den NationellaVägdatabasen som är ett referensvägnät med en stor mäng data kopplad till vägnätet.Referensvägnätet är byggt på en körbanenivå. I det här arbetet har databasen studerats ochvilka möjligheter som finns för att skapa en automatisk generalisering till vägnivå. Det finnsett behov att representera data på en annan detaljnivå för vissa applikationer och analysersom använder sig av vägdatabasen. Det är även viktigt utifrån ett kartografiskt synsätt.Möjligheterna att skapa en linjär referering mellan de olika detaljnivåerna har undersökts, föratt förenkla uppdateringar mellan nivåerna samt att inte behöva ajourhålla två olikadatabaser. Lantmäteriet har ett projekt med målet att skapa en fulltautomatisk generalisering för olika skalor.Efter att ha studerat de olika program som vanligtvis används vid generaliseringar samt vilkaprogram som Trafikverket använder sig av så valdes FME och ArcGIS i det här arbetet. Ettmindre studieområde valdes ut och relevant data hämtades från den NationellaVägdatabasen. Studien bestod av olika experiment och tester av olika parametervärden föratt få ett acceptabelt resultat.Tre olika områden studerades, där målet var att hitta en följd operationer som skapade enlämplig generalisering för alla områden. De tre olika områdena var parallella vägar,trafikplatser och cirkulationsplatser. Resultatet består av förslag på ett arbetsflöde, men delarhar behövt göras manuellt då det inte var möjligt att hitta en helt automatiseradgeneralisering för det valda området. Förslag på olika funktioner och verktyg som kanutvecklas har sammanställts, för att kunna utvecklade ett mer automatiserat arbetssätt.Resultatet av det här arbetet visar att om kartografiska generaliseringar studeras och testasmer skulle det kunna vara möjligt att skapa ett mer automatiserat arbetssätt med syfte attmöjliggöra generaliseringar mellan olika detaljnivåer. Det kan däremot vara svårt att få dettahelt automatiserat på grund av de olika komplexa trafikplatserna.

Congestion Identification in a Radio Access Transport Network

The convergence of mobile services and Internet has brought a radical change in mobile networks. An all IP network architecture, an evolution of the radio access transport network, is required to support new high-bandwidth services. Unfortunately, existing control mechanisms are insufficient to guarantee end users a high quality of experience. However, coordinating radio and transport network resources is expected to yield a more efficient solution. This thesis project investigates the interactions between the congestion avoidance protocols, explicit congestion notification, and the traffic engineering metrics for latency and bandwidth, when using Open Shortest Path First with traffic engineering (OSPF-TE) as a routing protocol. Using knowledge of these interactions, it is possible to identify the appearance of bottlenecks and to control the congestion in the transport links within a radio access transport network. Augmenting a topology map with the network’s current characteristics and reacting to evidence of potential congestion, further actions, such as handovers can be taken to ensure the users experience their expected quality of experience. The proposed method has been validated in a test bed. The results obtained from experiments and measurements in this test bed provide a clear picture of how the traffic flows in the network. Furthermore, the behavior of the network observed in these experiments, in terms of real-time performance and statistical analysis of metrics over a period of time, shows the efficiency of this proposed solution. / Tjänstekonvergensen av Internet- och mobila tjänster har medfört en radikal förändring i mobilnäten. En ”All IP” nätverksarkitektur, en utveckling av radios transportnät. Utvecklingen krävs för att stödja de nya bredbandiga tjänsterna. Tyvärr är befintliga kontrollmekanismer otillräckliga för att garantera användarens kvalitetsupplevelse. Med att samordna radio- och transportnätverkets resurser förväntar man sig en effektivare lösning. Detta examensarbete undersöker samspelet mellan protokoll för att undvika överlast, direkt indikation av överlast och trafikal statistik för fördröjning och bandbredd med trafikstyrning baserat på fördröjning och bandbredd , vid användning av Open Shortest Path First ( OSPF - TE ) som routingprotokoll. Med hjälp av information om dessa interaktioner, är det möjligt att identifiera uppkomsten av flaskhalsar och för att styra trafikstockningar i transportförbindelser inom ett radioaccess transportnät. En utökad topologikarta med nätverkets aktuella egenskaper kommer att reagera på en potentiell överbelastning. Ytterligare åtgärder, till exempel överlämningar, vidtas i mobilnätet för att säkerställa användarens upplevda kvalitet. Den föreslagna metoden har validerats i en testmiljö. Resultaten från experiment och mätningar i denna testmiljö ger en tydlig bild av hur trafikflödena framskrider i nätverket. Beteendet hos nätverket som observeras i dessa experiment, i termer av realtidsprestanda och statistisk analys av mätvärden över en tidsperiod, visar effektiviteten av denna föreslagna lösning.

Die schichtenübergreifende Steuerung von Multi-Layer Netzen ermöglicht die Realisierung fortgeschrittener Netzarchitekturen sowie neuartiger Konzepte zur Steigerung der Ausfallsicherheit. Gegenstand dieser Arbeit ist ein neues ressourcensparendes Konzept zur Kompensation von Core-Router-Ausfallen in IP-Netzen. Core-Router-Ausfälle führen zur Abkopplung der an Ihnen angeschlossenen Zugangsrouter vom Netz. Daher werden die Zugangsrouter üblicherweise mit jeweils zwei oder mehreren verschiedenen Core-Routern verbunden (engl.: dual homing) was jedoch eine Verdoppelung der Anschlusskapazität im IP Netz bedingt. Bei dem neuen Verfahren - Dual Homing mit gemeinsam genutzten Router-Ersatzressourcen (engl.: dual homing with shared backup router resources, DH-SBRR) - erfolgt die Zugangsrouter-Anbindung zum einen zu einem Core-Router des IP-Netzes und zum anderen zu einem Netzelement der darunterliegenden Transportschicht. Damit lassen sich Router-Ersatzressourcen, die im IP-Netz an beliebigen Stellen vorgehalten werden können, uber das Transportnetz an die Stelle eines ausgefallenen Core-Routers schalten. Die Steuerung dieser Ersatzschaltung geschieht über eine schichten übergreifende, d.h. das Transportnetz- und IP-Netz umfassende Control-Plane - beispielsweise auf Basis von GMPLS. Da beim Umschalten der Routerressourcen auch aktuelle Zustände (bspw. Routing-Tabellen) auf die Router-Ersatzressourcen mit übertragen werden müssen, beinhaltet das neue Verfahren auch Konzepte zur Router-Virtualisierung. Zum Vergleich und zur Bewertung der Leistungsfähigkeit des neuen DH-SBRR Verfahrens werden in der Arbeit verschiedene Zugangsrouter-Homing-Varianten hinsichtlich Netz-Kosten, Netz-Verfügbarkeit, Recovery-Zeit und Netz-Energieverbrauch gegenübergestellt. Als Multi-Layer Netzszenarien werden zum einen IP über WDM und zum anderen IP über OTN (ODU) betrachtet. Zur Bestimmung der minimalen Netz-Kosten ist ein generisches Multi-Layer Netzoptimierungsmodell entwickelt worden, welches bei unterschiedlichen Homing-Architekturen angewendet werden kann. Neben dem Optimierungsmodell zur Netzkostenminimierung wird auch eine Modellvariante zur Minimierung des Energieverbrauchs vorgestellt. Um die Rechenzeit für die Lösung der Optimierungsprobleme zu verringern und damit auch größere Netzszenarien untersuchen zu können bedarf es heuristischer Lösungsverfahren. Im Rahmen der Arbeit ist daher eine neue speziell auf die Multilayer-Optimierungsprobleme zugeschnittene Lösungsheuristik entwickelt worden. Aus der Netzkosten-Optimierung ergibt sich, dass durch den Einsatz von DH-SBBR signifikante Kosteneinsparungen im Vergleich zu herkömmlichen Homing-Architekturen realisiert werden können. Änderungen der Verkehrslast, der Kosten der IP-Netzelemente oder der Netztopologie haben keinen signifikanten Einfluss auf dieses Ergebnis. Neben dem Kosten- und Energieeinsparungspotential sind auch die Auswirkungen auf die Netz-Verfügbarkeit und die Recovery-Zeit untersucht worden. Für die Ende-zu-Ende Verfügbarkeit bei Anwendung der verschiedenen Homing-Architekturen Können untere Grenzwerte angegeben werden. In this dissertation we propose a novel resource-efficient homing scheme: dual homing with shared backup router resources. The proposed scheme realizes shared router-level redundancy, enabled by the emergence of control plane architectures such as generalized multi-protocol label switching. Additionally, virtualization schemes complement the proposed architecture. Different homing architectures are examined and compared under the prism of cost, availability, recovery time and energy efficiency. Multiple network layers are considered in Internet protocol over wavelength division multiplexing as well as Internet protocol over optical data unit settings - leading to the development of multi-layer optimization techniques. A generic multi-layer network design mathematical model, which can be applied to different homing architecture considerations, is developed. The optimization objective can be adapted to either minimizing the cost for network equipment or the power consumption of the network. In order to address potential issues with regard to computational complexity, we develop a novel heuristic approach specifically targeting the proposed architecture. It is shown that significant cost savings can be achieved - even under extreme changes in the traffic demand volume, in the cost for different types of network equipment, as well as in the network topology characteristics. In order to evaluate occurring tradeoffs in terms of performance, we study the effects on availability and recovery time. We proceed to derive lower bounds on end-to-end availability for the different homing architectures. Additionally, an analytical recovery time model is developed and evaluated. We investigate how service-imposed maximum outage requirements have a direct effect on the setting of the proposed architecture.

A complexidade de interligação aumenta de acordo com as restrições impostas pela capacidade de investimentos e custos operacionais na obtenção da solução ótima para a melhor topologia de rede. Para resolver problemas de planejamento e recomposição da rede de telecomunicações é necessária a utilização de recurso computacional, pois problemas que envolvem redes desta natureza possuem a característica do conjunto de problemas de otimização combinatória, considerados difíceis. Com o objetivo de planejar e realizar estudos na recomposição da rede de telecomunicações, neste trabalho é apresentada a estratégia que visa o uso de recursos heurísticos como algoritmo genético e Dijkstra, bem como o conceito de rede fictícia na modelagem e solução computacional na obtenção da solução ótima referente à topologia de rede, possibilitando a análise prévia do tráfego na topologia proposta caso houver a incidência de falhas. / The growth of traffic on telecommunications networks for broadband services, fixed and mobile telephony has demanded efforts in planning and study the restoration of the network, especially transport networks, making the high level of complexity in developing projects that involve networks. The interconnection complexity increases with the restrictions imposed by the capacity of investment and operating costs in obtaining the optimal solution for the best network topology. To resolve issues of planning and rebuilding of the telecommunication networks is necessary to use computational resources, since problems involving networks of this nature have the feature set of combinatorial optimization problems, considered difficult. With the objective to plan and carry out studies on the recomposition of the telecommunications network, in this work the strategy for use as heuristic genetic algorithm and Dijkstra, as well as the concept of fictitious network modeling and computational solution to obtain the solution great on the network topology, enabling preliminary analysis of traffic on the proposed topology where there incidence of failures.

Étude des potentialités offertes par les technologies de transmission optique flexible pour les réseaux métro / coeur / Study of the potentialities offered by the flexible optical transmission technologies for metro and core networks

L'évolution vers de nouveaux services, comme la TV à la demande, nécessitant de grosses bandes passantes remet en question les débits transportés par chaque canal optique d'un réseau WDM. Les débits des canaux ont atteint aujourd'hui les 100 Gbit/s. Cette montée en débit doit être accompagnée par de nouvelles fonctionnalités au sein des réseaux de transport optiques. Améliorer la flexibilité et assurer la transparence des réseaux optiques sont des défis très importants auxquels les opérateurs doivent faire face aujourd'hui. Un réseau optique est dit transparent, si les signaux optiques transportés ne subissent aucune conversion optoélectronique sauf au moment de leur insertion et de leur extraction dans le réseau optique. La flexibilité, quant à elle, concerne principalement les fonctions d'agrégation et de désagrégation optiques. Aujourd'hui ces fonctions d'agrégation et de désagrégation sont réalisées dans le domaine électronique, ce qui avec la montée du débit, va engendrer un coût important pour les opérateurs. Une manière d'y remédier serait de trouver une technologie adaptée à la montée du débit et offrant la possibilité de faire de l'agrégation et de la désagrégation optique des flux de trafics. Dans cette thèse nous proposons d'étudier une technique de commutation tout-optique offrant la possibilité de faire de la commutation optique intra-canal. Cette technique, baptisée multi-bande OFDM, consiste à diviser un canal WDM en plusieurs entités appelées sous-bandes. Le nombre de ces entités dépend des contraintes technologiques des équipements utilisés pour générer le canal multi-bande (les filtres optiques, les convertisseurs analogiques/numérique et numériques/analogiques). Nous comparons la technologie multi-bande OFDM par rapport à des technologies tendancielles mono-bande : le cas mono-bande opaque et mono-bande transparent. Nous démontrons que la technologie multi-bande OFDM peut être un compromis entre ces deux technologies pour les futurs réseaux de télécommunications optiques. Pour ce faire, nous calculons les performances en termes de blocage. Nous étudions l'impact de la conversion de longueurs d'onde sur les réseaux multi-bande OFDM ainsi que l'impact d'augmenter les nombres de sous-bandes sur les performances du réseau. Nous dégageons les limites technologiques de cette approche. Dans une autre partie de l'étude, nous montrons l'intérêt économique de la technologie multi-bande OFDM. Nous exposons le gain en coût des émetteurs/récepteurs obtenu grâce au déploiement de la technologie multi-bande OFDM sur un réseau cœur et un réseau métropolitain. / The evolution of new telecommunication services, which requires large bandwidth, challenges bit-rates transported by each optical channel of a WDM network. Bit-rates of optical channels have now reached 100 Gbit/s. This increase in bit-rate must be supported by new features in optical network. Improve flexibility and ensure transparency of optical network, are very important challenges that telecom operators face today. An optical network is called transparent, if the transported optical signals are not converted in electrical domain except at the time of their insertion and extraction in/from the optical network. Flexibility concerns mainly the aggregation / disaggregation processes. Today, the functions of aggregation/disaggregation are made on the electrical domain. This generates a significant cost for operators. One way to avoid this would be to find a technology which offers high bit-rates and enable the aggregation and disaggregation functions in the optical domain. In this thesis, we propose to study all-optical switching technology at the sub-wavelength granularity. This technique, called multi-band OFDM, consists in dividing a WDM channel into multiple entities, called sub-bands. The number of sub-bands depends on the technological constraints of optical components used to transport the optical signal (optical filters, digital analogical converters, analogical digital converters, optical transponders, optical multiplexers, etc.). We compare the multi-band OFDM technology to two legacies scenarios: mono-band opaque and mono-band transparent WDM technologies. We demonstrate that the multi-band OFDM technology can be a trade-off between these two legacies scenarios. To do that, we studied the performance in terms of blocking ratio of the multi-band OFDM technology and mono-bands WDM technologies. We study the impact of increasing the number of sub-bands on network performances. We also investigate the technical limits of this technology. Moreover, we demonstrate the economic interest of the multi-band OFDM. We expose the gain on the number of transponders when the multi-band OFDM technology is deployed on metro and core network.

This thesis is devoted to the EU Common transport policy with a focus on rail and road transport. The first chapter briefly describes the historical development of transport and ultimately defines its basic concepts. The following chapter is exclusively focused on the basic characteristics of the critical areas of selected transport sectors, which in the context of the integration of European transport systems play a crucial role. The third chapter deals with the characteristics of three Transport White Papers and defines the objectives of the Common Transport Policy and TEN-T policy. Another part deals with the Trans-European transport network and the evaluation of the success of the construction of TEN-T. The last chapter analyzes the success of the objectives of the EU Common Transport Policy defined in the third chapter.
