Variações do mito de Nêmesis nos escritos de Albert Camus / Variations of the myth of Nemesis in Albert Camuss writings

Dentre os planos que Albert Camus estabeleceu para a sua obra, prevaleceu nos seus escritos e declarações a tríplice que incluía os ciclos do absurdo, da revolta e do amor. Cada um dos ciclos seria composto de pelo menos uma peça de teatro, um romance e um ensaio, além de também ser acompanhado de um mito central, sendo respectivamente Sísifo, Prometeu e Nêmesis. Com a sua morte súbita em acidente de carro aos 46 anos, o escritor deixou alguns vestígios do que viria a compor o seu terceiro ciclo: o romance inacabado O primeiro homem, anotações sobre a peça Don Fausto e elementos para o ensaio O mito de Nêmesis. A presente pesquisa reúne e contextualiza os rastros deixados por Camus em torno da sua relação com o mito de Nêmesis a fim de oferecer uma chave de leitura para a sua obra e expor um panorama formal, temático e filosófico de um dos seus últimos projetos de ensaio. / Among the plans that Albert Camus has established to his work it has prevailed, in his writings and declarations, the triple that includes cycles of absurd, revolt and love. Each one of the cycles would be composed at least of a theater play, a novel and an essay. Besides, they are also followed by a central myth, being Sisyphus, Prometheus and Nemesis. After Camus sudden death at age 46, he left some traces of what would it be consisted his third cycle: the unfinished novel The first man, notes about the play Don Faust and elements for the essay The myth of Nemesis. The presented research reunites and contextualizes the traces let by Camus around his relationship with the myth of Nemesis in order to offer a reading key to his work and to expose a formal, thematic and philosophical overview of this essay project.

La plume et le glaive : Caligula et la création littéraire chez Camus

Pour Albert Camus, la littérature était à la fois une activité essentielle à son bonheur et un objet de réflexion. Afin de saisir quelle conception de la littérature et quelle vision du rôle de l’écrivain se dégagent de son oeuvre, ce mémoire aborde dans un même mouvement ses deux principaux essais, Le Mythe de Sisyphe et L’Homme révolté, et une pièce de théâtre, Caligula. Notre premier chapitre consiste dans la recherche de ce qui, pour Camus, fait de la création artistique une activité privilégiée dans l’horizon de la pensée de l’absurde et de la révolte. Dans le deuxième chapitre, les différents commentaires émis par la critique à propos de Caligula seront examinés. La pièce, malgré l’opinion dominante, ne raconte pas l’histoire d’un empereur absurde qui se révolte contre son destin. L’importance du thème de la création littéraire dans cette pièce a également été grandement sous-estimée. Enfin, le troisième chapitre de ce mémoire présente notre propre analyse de la pièce. La confrontation de la fiction avec la théorie révèle une grande concordance entre les deux aspects de l’oeuvre de Camus. L’accord n’est cependant pas parfait, et l’étude des points de friction découverts permet d’apporter des éclaircissements sur un des points les plus obscurs des essais de Camus : l’éthique du créateur placé dans une situation où il doit choisir entre tuer et mourir. / For Albert Camus, literature was both an activity crucial to his happiness and a study object. In order to understand what conception of literature can be found in Camus’ writings and the responsibilities of the writer that this definition implies, this memoir studies his two main essays, The Myth of Sisyphus and The Rebel, and one play, Caligula. Our first chapter consist in a research of what makes artistic creation an exceptional activity in the light of Camus’ thoughts on absurd on revolt. In our second chapter, the critics’ various commentaries about Caligula are examined. In spite of what is still the opinion of a majority of critics, the play is not the tale of an absurd emperor who would revolt against his destiny. Also, the theme of literary creation has not been sufficiently studied in that play, in which it plays a determinant role. Finally, the third chapter of this memoir presents our own analysis of the play. The confrontation of fiction and theory reveals a great similarity between the two aspects of Camus’ writings. However, the match is never perfect, and the study of the friction points allows us to shed light on one of the most obscure part of Camus’ essays: the ethic of the creator placed in a situation where he must kill or be killed.

Citizens of a Genre: Forms, Fields and Practices of Twentieth-Century French and Francophone Ethnographic Fiction

<p>This dissertation examines French and Francophone texts, contexts and thematic problems that comprise a genre I call "ethnographic fiction," whose development we can trace throughout the twentieth century in several geographic locations and in distinct historical moments. During the twentieth century in France, anthropology as an institutionalized discipline and "literature" (writ large) were in constant communication with one another. On the one hand, many French anthropologists produced stylized works demonstrating aesthetic sensibilities that were increasingly difficult to classify. On the other hand, though, poets, philosophers and other literary intellectuals read, absorbed, commented on and attacked texts from anthropology. This century-long conversation produced an interdisciplinary conceptual field allowing French anthropology to borrow from and adapt models from literature at the same time as literature asserted itself as more than just an artistic enterprise and, indeed, as one whose epistemological prerogative was to contribute to and enrich the understanding of humankind and its cultural processes. In this dissertation I argue that fiction can be seen to travel in multiple directions within France's twentieth-century conversation between literature and anthropology such that we can observe the formation of a new genre, one comprised of texts that either explicitly or more implicitly fuse fictional forms and contents together with the methodological and representational imperatives of anthropology and ethnographic fieldwork. Additionally, I argue that fiction moves geographically as well, notably from the metropole to Francophone West Africa which became an anthropological hotspot in the twentieth century once extended field research was legitimated in France and armchair anthropology was thoroughly discredited. By investigating ethnographies, novels, memoirs and films produced both in metropolitan France, Francophone West Africa, and the French Caribbean (including texts by Michel Leiris, Amadou Hampâté Bâ, Jean Rouch, Jean-Claude Izzo and Raphaël Confiant), I aim to shed light on the kinds of work that elements of fiction perform in ethnographic texts and, by contrast, on how ethnographic concepts, strategies and fieldwork methods are implicitly or explicitly adopted and reformulated in more literarily oriented works of fiction. Ethnographic fiction as a genre, then, was born not only from the epistemological rapprochement of anthropology and literature in metropolitan France, but from complex and often fraught encounters with the very locations where anthropological praxis was carried out.</p> / Dissertation

Identités de Claude Cahun : étude de l’héritage juif dans les textes et les images

Dans ce mémoire, nous nous proposons d’étudier la présence de l’héritage juif de Claude Cahun dans ses œuvres littéraires et picturales ainsi que son influence sur sa construction identitaire. Dans un premier temps, nous évoquons les théories de l’identité, plus précisément de l’identité juive, pour pouvoir ensuite analyser les traces de la judéité, unique et particulière, dans l’œuvre de l’auteure-artiste. Nous procédons à l’analyse de fragments d’Aveux non avenus essentiellement, tout en complétant notre réflexion de textes périphériques. Ces extraits montrent l’influence de la tradition juive et du rapport conflictuel que l’auteure entretenait avec son héritage religieux et philosophique. Par une analyse précise et détaillée de l’expression de sa judéité, nous tâchons de mettre en évidence l’importance de cette tradition dans la construction des identités cahuniennes et dans l’élaboration de son œuvre. De par l’étude de ses textes, les linéaments d’une esthétique peuvent être décelés : celle du « devenir », de la perpétuelle métamorphose. Nous constatons que l’idée de « devenir » est fondatrice de la judéité de Claude Cahun, et nous tâchons dans ce mémoire de démontrer son importance. Dans un second temps, nous insistons sur le rapport critique entretenu par l’auteure avec la société dans laquelle elle écrit et dont les mœurs et la pensée sont extrêmement influencées par le dogme religieux. Nous mettons en évidence les virulentes dénonciations mises en place par l’analyse de stratégies scripturaires précises comme les réécritures parodiques et les détournements des textes bibliques. / In this thesis, we will explore the presence that Claude Cahun’s Jewish heritage has on her literary and pictorial works as well as on the construction of her identity. Firstly, we evoke theories of identity, more precisely of Jewish identity, to then analyze unique and particular Jewish traces in the works of the author-artist. We essentially analyze fragments of Aveux non avenus, all the while completing our reflection with peripheral texts. These excerpts show the influence of the Jewish tradition and the conflictual relationship that the author maintained with her religious and philosophical heritage. Through a precise and detailed analysis of the expression of her Jewishness, we attempt to highlight important evidence of these traditions in the Cahunian identity construction as well as in the developments of her work. Through the study of her texts, we can discern certain lineaments building to an aesthetic: that of “becoming”, of the perpetual metamorphosis. We note that the idea of “becoming” is the founding of Claude Cahun’s Jewishness, and in this thesis, we aim to demonstrate its importance. Secondly, we insist on the critical relationship kept by the author with the society on which she writes, whose customs and ideas are extremely influenced by religious dogmas. We highlight the virulent denunciations established by the analysis of specific scriptural strategies such as parody rewriting and misappropriation of biblical texts.
