is known that with the reality of students, interpersonal relationships, the dreams and
perspectives, or see in their area of living your day to day. The study was conducted
through field research, from students to veterans and rookies in the period May-June
2007 in two university residences located in the neighborhood of the Center and the
Campus I of UFPB in João Pessoa. To develop this research was necessary to
define a sample of approximately 10%, twenty-four students from a universe of three
hundred. Used as a tool to collect the form with open and closed questions, and
analysis of data in the tables, the graphics in addition to desk research and literature
search. The study suggests that assistance to students has been maintained through
efforts punctual, not always sufficient, the units of community and student affairs of
each institution. It is essential that the education policy includes assistance to
students who really is unable to remain in college. The student assistance is
important for achieving a higher level of training qualified. Therefore, this study aims
to contribute not only new knowledge but also to broaden the debate on the issue of
student assistance, as public policy, those who really need support for their academic
and professional development.

Background: University students, in general, are young people seeking training, who are going through a transition phase characterized by significant morphological and physiological, behavioral, cognitive and social changes. This time of life coincides with the entry into higher education, where new social relations are stablished and behaviors are acquired, making the university vulnerable to situations that endanger their health. For students who reside in university housing, in addition to the factors already mentioned, there is the issue of changing the city, resulting in the removal of the family environment and social network as well as the fact of living in a university residence, where a new space will be shared with strangers. Purpose: To draw a health profile of residents of a university residence of the Federal University of Santa Maria. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 768 students, and a questionnaire was used to search all
variables. A descriptive analysis was performed including: frequencies and 95% confidence intervals, for categorical variables, average and standard deviation for continuous variables. All analyzes were conducted in STATA 12.0. Results: In the sum of physical activity (transportation and leisure time) 71.8% of the students were active, 55.8% were active only in transportation and 30% active only in leisure time. Only 11.2% had regular consumption of fruits and vegetables, 42.4% reported having consumed excess alcohol in the last month, and 9.4% had consumed at least one cigarette in the past 30 days. It was also observed that 18.9% of students perceived their health as regular/bad, 6.2% of respondents reported the presence of dyslipidemia, and 25% were overweight or obese. Conclusion: We concluded that the students had low levels of physical activity, especially in the leisure time; low regular consumption of fruits and vegetables; excessive consumption of alcohol and
tobacco; high prevalence of self-reported health regular/bad; as well as high prevalence of overweight and obesity. Therefore, we need to develop programs
that encourage the adoption of a healthier lifestyle in this population, and the university is a good place to create and implement strategies that encourage behavioral changes.

Residencia universitaria y usos complementarios bajo el concepto “in between” para estudiantes universitarios de provincia o del extranjero en el distrito de Pueblo Libre / University residence and complementary uses under the concept “in between” for university students from province or abroad in the district of Pueblo LibreSoto Flórez, Karla 14 August 2020 (has links)
The present project is a mixed building under the concept “in between” (intermediate spaces), the main typology of which is a university residence, complementary to which arise complementary uses such as commerce, co-working offices and multipurpose rooms. It is strategically located in the Pueblo Libre district, close to the necessary and complementary equipment for these typologies. With the elaboration of this project, the aim is to cover 3.05% of the current demand from students from the province or from abroad, who due to a lack of buildings like this, have the need to stay in environments that are not architecturally suitable for their needs.
The objective of the university residence is to accommodate the students and provide them with leisure and rest spaces whose architectural quality allows the students to function personally, academically, socially and culturally.
On the other hand, it is necessary to mention that co-working offices, shops and multipurpose rooms are complementary spaces to this residence, which are included in the project in order to make it more attractive to investors and, therefore, hence, more profitable. / Trabajo de investigación

Residencia universitaria interdistrital en San Miguel-Lima aplicando el modelo co-housing para promover la interacción social / Interdistrict University Residence in San Miguel-Lima applying the co-housing model to promote social interactionGarcia Almanza, Carlo André 11 July 2020 (has links)
The project is located in Lima-Peru, in the district of San Miguel, due to its academic configuration in relation to the uses of the lots in the district and its relationship with private and public universities. The project is an Interdistrict University Residence. It is developed with the purpose of verifying the following: ¿How to design an interdistrict university residence considering the deficit of the offer applying the co-housing model to promote social interaction? In order to answer this hypothesis, it is considered as an objective of the project to design, applying the co-housing model, an interdistrict university residence to promote social interaction. In this sense, the research is developed in two frameworks: the referential framework, where the characteristics of 15 referents of typology and emphasis are analyzed; and the theoretical framework, which develops and researches and determines the project guidelines in relation to typology and emphasis. These are: 1) Determination of the program to be collectivized in relation to the student's activities; 2) Collectivization of services; 3) multifunctional spaces; 4) Generation of interaction spaces through the optimization of rooms. / Trabajo de investigación

Managing Water and Electricity Consumption in University Residence Halls: a Study on Promoting Voluntary Resource Conservation by College StudentsParece, Tammy Erlene 27 May 2010 (has links)
With the world's population growing at a rate faster than the rate at which natural resources are being replenished, the challenge for governments and the world's citizens is how to conserve resources in order to provide a sustainable level of natural resources for the future. Conserving natural resources includes educating the citizens of the world on the connection between natural resource depletion and their levels of consumption of resources, such as energy and water.
To help alleviate the increasing burden the world's growing population is placing on natural resources, sustainability should be a part of college students' education in their field of study and in preparing them to become good citizens. This education should take place in the classroom and other activities, including athletics, community organizations, and in their residence life. Teaching students living in on-campus residence halls conservation activities provides information that students can use in their private lives when setting up their own households. On-campus residence halls also provide an opportunity to evaluate any gender differences related to conservation activities since the demographics of the residence halls vary from all-female, to co-ed, to all-male students.
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) was the location for a study on promoting environmentally-relevant behavior (ERB) among students residing in on-campus residence halls. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between the use of educational strategies and natural resource consumption by promoting ERB among students living in the residence halls during the spring and fall semesters of the 2009 calendar year.
Using the literature on promoting ERB, five different strategies were designed for promoting water and electricity conservation. Each strategy involved different stimuli to promote student participation in ERB. The information provided the students included reasons why ERB was important and specific actions to take to conserve resources. In three of the strategies, students were provided the results of their conservation efforts monthly during the study period.
The Virginia Tech Office of Residence Life provided detailed information for the 49 on-campus residence halls, including buildings' characteristics such as heating and cooling methods, age, construction, renovation history, square footage, if the buildings contained offices or classrooms, and student population figures. Variability among the buildings was eliminated by comparing these differences, and then a random numbers table was used to assign each of the buildings to one of the five different groups. The strategy for each group was applied to four residence halls -- two dormitories and two Greek Houses, for a total of twenty buildings. In each strategy more stimuli were applied in an effort to produce higher consumption reductions.
The Virginia Tech Office of Facilities provided four-years historical electricity and seven-years historical water usage, and provided monthly usage for each building during the study period. Electricity consumption reduction was promoted in all twenty halls but water consumption reduction was promoted only in the dormitories, as the University was unable to track water consumption for any one individual Greek House. The historical data showed that water usage per student was higher in most of the female-occupied dormitories, but no statistical difference was seen with regards to historical electricity usage and gender. Percent change in per student usage — kilowatt hours for electricity and gallons for water — was the calculation used to determine change in ERB.
The results of this research showed a general relationship between educational strategies and natural resource consumption reduction over both study periods. However, except for the Greek-House Spring semester results, no statistical significant difference was found between any of the different study groups. Electricity reductions were achieved in seventeen of twenty residence halls during the first semester and in all but one residence hall during the second semester. Water reductions were achieved in five of ten dormitories during the first semester and in six of nine dormitories in the second semester. However, the use of more strategies did not lead to a higher percentage of reductions.
During the first semester, a statistically significant difference was found in water usage and gender and the difference did not support a female predisposition for ERB. Decreases were achieved in excess of 10% in the male-occupied dormitories, but only a minimal reduction or increases were achieved in any of the dormitories that included female residents. After the first month of the second semester, similar results were seen relative to gender, so additional posters and prompts were placed in the female-occupied dormitories. As a result, water reductions were achieved in six dormitories with only small increases in the other three, and the semester final results did not show a statistical significant difference between genders.
The lack of statistical difference between the study groups could be a result of contamination, the active environmental organizations on campus, or an observational effect. The study was contaminated within the first two weeks of the study period when all residence halls across campus learned of the research and requested their inclusion in the study. Since, the residence halls in the control groups were advised of their inclusion in the study, the students may have demonstrated ERB because of the knowledge they were being observed.
A survey sent to the students living in the study residence halls revealed that 94.6% of the students had knowledge of the study, and that 77% participated in ERB. Students showed a propensity for ERB when they were informed on their consumptive behaviors' effects on natural resource depletion, and by being provided with actions they could take to change their behaviors. This research did not show that adding strategies of feedback and group leaders to information increased the percentage of consumption reductions in college students residing on Virginia Tech's campus. / Master of Science

First-Year Students’ Experiences of Peer Groups and Peer Pressure in the Residences of a South African UniversityMntuyedwa, Vuyokazi January 2020 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / In general, peers have a tendency to influence others positively and negatively. In the main, transition from school to higher education causes some students to experience stress; to respond negatively to new conditions; and to engage in risk behaviour, which hinders epistemological access, negatively affects performance, and often delays graduation. Nonetheless, participation in peer group activities has advantages and potentialities, which are often neglected in popular scholarly discourse. The main research question of the study was to investigate the experiences of peer pressure among first-year students? This study adopted a mixed-method research design and presents findings for both quantitative data which was collected through an electronic survey and qualitative findings from focus group interviews with three different groups: females, males, and, mixed gender. The population comprised first-year students living in two residences of a selected South African university. The qualitative data was analysed through thematic analysis, while the quantitative data was analysed through descriptive statistics and inferential statistics such as Spearman’s Rank correlation was used in the study. In consideration with the transition theory, social learning theory, and student involvement theory. Findings reveal that first-year students join different groups and they encounter both positive and negative experiences. Positive experiences were observed in relation to academic performance and sense of belonging. Negative experiences indicate that peers influence others to adopt anti-social behaviour, experience undue materialistic pressure, have poor class attendance, and depend on peers for decisions. Overall, it is found that academic success depends on students’ interconnectedness, sense of belonging, peer support, acceptance, and recognition. The findings can be utilized to inform practical strategies and policies to empower first-year students to deal productively and progressively with peer pressure within the higher education sector. The study recommends the implementation of a First-year Student orientation programme which is called University 101 that can assist first-year students with better transition to higher education and can increase retention output. The programme should address the crucial areas that will assists the first-year with better transitions such as diversity, well-being, self-esteem, academic excellence and peer pressure.

International Male Students’ First-Year ExperienceAl-Haque, (MOHD). RASHED 20 September 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of four racialized, male, first-year, international students attending a university in southern Ontario and living in university residence. Through four one-on-one interviews, my qualitative study sought to uncover the challenges, needs, and opportunities of these students. In addition to cultural and academic adjustment, my study focused on how the participants preserved their masculine and cultural/religious identities in a Western university. A secondary purpose of my study was to examine how these four international students experienced living in university residences, what challenges they faced, and how their specific needs were met.
Four themes emerged from the interviews. First, the participants outlined their difficulties adjusting to Canadian university culture. While some enjoyed the transition to Canada, others found adjusting their cultural identities challenging. Second, these participants struggled to adjust to the academic rigour and workload during their first year at university. Despite the demands of university academics, the participants generally welcomed the freedom and flexibility of university life, which allowed them to create their own work schedules and engage in their social lives. Third, the participants maintained their masculine and cultural identities, to more or lesser degrees, despite being immersed in the social and cultural norms of Canadian university life. While some felt isolated within Queen’s University because of their different cultural and masculine identities, overall, these participants valued their own identities and resolved to preserve them. Finally, the participants discussed the benefits and challenges of living in university residences. While residences tended to provide the participants with a sense of community and belonging, sometimes it was challenging living in a loud and hectic environment. / Thesis (Master, Education) -- Queen's University, 2012-09-19 17:28:16.91
