Simulation of the upgraded Phase-1 Trigger Readout Electronics of the Liquid-Argon Calorimeter of the ATLAS Detector at the LHC

Grohs, Johannes Philipp 10 May 2016 (has links) (PDF)
In the context of an intensive upgrade plan for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in order to provide proton beams of increased luminosity, a revision of the data readout electronics of the Liquid-Argon-Calorimeter of the ATLAS detector is scheduled. This is required to retain the efficiency of the trigger at increased event rates despite its fixed bandwidth. The focus lies on the early digitization and finer segmentation of the data provided to the trigger. Furthermore, there is the possibility to implement new energy reconstruction algorithms which are adapted to the specific requirements of the trigger. In order to constitute crucial design decisions, such as the digitization scale or the choice of digital signal processing algorithms, comprehensive simulations are required. High trigger efficiencies are decisive at it for the successful continuation of the measurements of rare StandardModel processes as well as for a high sensitivity to new physics beyond the established theories. It can be shown that a significantly improved resolution of the missing transverse energy calculated by the trigger is achievable due to the revised segmentation of the data. Various energy reconstruction algorithms are investigated in detail. It can be concluded that these will facilitate reliable trigger decisions for all expected working conditions and for the whole possible energy range.

Search for heavy neutrinos with the CMS experiment and studies for the upgrade of its electromagnetic calorimeter / Recherche de neutrinos lourds dans l'expérience CMS et études pour l'amélioration de son calorimètre électromagnétique

Negro, Giulia 28 September 2018 (has links)
In this thesis, the search for heavy right-handed neutrinos through the decay of a right-handed W (Wʀ) boson into two leptons and two jets with the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider is presented. The Wʀ boson decays into a lepton and a massive neutrino (Nʀ), and the neutrino decays into another lepton of the same flavor and into a pair of jets. The data collected by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV during 2016 and corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb ⁻¹ were used for this analysis. These heavy neutrinos are missing in the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics and thus they are important to shed light on physics beyond the SM. My main contributions were the simulation and validation of the signal samples, the estimation of one of the main backgrounds, the production of the 1D and 2D limits on the Wʀ cross section (as a function of the Wʀ mass and of the Wʀ mass versus Nʀ mass), and the systematics and statistical analysis. The results obtained with this analysis give the most stringent limits to date.Studies on the upgrade of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter for the LHC Phase II, that foresees a partial replacement of the electronics in the barrel, are also presented. My main contributions were in the preparation of the setup and in the data taking of test beams performed at the H4 beam line in the SPS North Area of CERN, whose goal was to study the performance of the prototype for the new Very-Front-End boards (CATIA chips with 160 MHz ADC), and in studying the shapes and noise of the signals collected by a matrix of 5 x 5 crystals calculating their timing and energy resolution. The document starts with a theoretical introduction about the Standard Model and the physics beyond the Standard Model, in particular on heavy neutrinos, followed by a description of the CMS detector and its electromagnetic calorimeter. The upgrade studies on the electromagnetic calorimeter are presented in a dedicated chapter, then the analysis on the search for heavy neutrinos and an overview on the overall neutrino physics at the LHC and other experiments are described.

Cross section measurement of simultaneously produced Υ(1S) + J/Ψ mesons and upgrade studies for the CMS detector

Dilsiz, Kamuran 01 January 2016 (has links)
A measured cross section of simultaneously produced Υ(1S) and J/ψ mesons is performed using 20 fb-1 integrated luminosity in proton-proton collisions at √s=8 TeV center of mass energy recorded by the CMS detector. Both mesons are fully reconstructed from their final states, μ+ μ-. To extract the signal yield, an extended maximum likelihood fit is used on two (invariant mass of Υ(1S) and J/ψ) and three (invariant mass of Υ(1S) and J/ψ, cτ) dimensional components. A two-dimensional extended likelihood fit is used for the signal yield of data and a three-dimensional extended likelihood fit is used to know the possibility of displaced J/ψ candidate events arising from a B meson decay. A data embedding method is used to correct the efficiency in the data. The cross section in the fiducial region, defined as |y|<2.0, is determined to be 16.5±3.6(stat)±2.6(syst) pb. In order to improve the physics measurements capabilities for the harsh radiation environments at Large Hadron Collider (LHC), radiation hard detectors are needed. Secondary Emission Method (SEM) is a technique to measure the energy of particles such as e, n, and p in extreme radiation environments. Secondary Emission Ionization Calorimetry is a new technique for high radiation conditions. We designed two different types of test boards to test Hamamatsu single anode R7761 and multi-anode R5900-00-M16 PMTs and compared average gain values for both SE and PMT modes. We found that both values (SE and PMT) were comparable, which means the test boards that were developed perform very well and they could be used at Fermilab Test Beam Facility or in the CERN H2 beam area for the detection of minimum ionizing and showering particles.

Upgrading Packaged Software: An Exploratory Study of Decisions, Impacts, and Coping Strategies from the Perspectives of Stakeholders

Khoo, Huoy Min 11 January 2006 (has links)
Packaged software is widely adopted and has become an integral part of most organizations’ IT portfolios. Once packaged software is adopted, upgrades to subsequent versions appear to be inevitable. To date, research on packaged software upgrade has not received the attention that it warrants, as academic research continues to focus on initial technology adoption. To explore this understudied yet important area, three research questions were proposed: (1) What influences the decision to upgrade packaged software? (2) How do stakeholders cope with software upgrade? (3) How does a packaged software upgrade affect stakeholders? A qualitative research method was used to study the research questions. Two cases were conducted at a Fortune 500 company located in the Southeastern region of United States. The first case studied Windows 2000 upgrades and the second case studied SAP 4.6C upgrade. A theoretical model with six components was induced from the study; the components are decision, motivating forces, contingency forces, planned strategies, corrective actions, and impacts. Upgrade decisions are the outcome of interaction between motivating forces that can originate from internal and external environments, and contingency forces. A decision to upgrade will lead to both positive and negative impacts as experienced by users and IT groups. However, stakeholders’ experiences differ according to the types of software and also their roles in the company. Two types of strategies were observed in the study: planned strategies and corrective actions. Planned strategies were used to tackle anticipated issues, and corrective actions were adopted to solve ad hoc problems when negative impacts arose. Both strategies can affect the final outcome of impacts. Finally, in the event a corrective action was used, there is a chance that it will become a permanent planned strategy.

ABSTRACT On Nov.11, 2001, Taiwan obtained the accession of World Trade Organization and became a formal member of WTO on Jan 1st of 2002. As a member of WTO, Taiwan has equal rights to participate in the setting of global trade rules as well as sharing the benefits of liberalization. In the meantime, Taiwan must fulfill its WTO commitments completely, whether resulting from its bilateral and multilateral negotiations or from its standard WTO obligations. The accession to WTO means to Taiwan a big impact on all aspects of its general economics, people¡¦s everyday living as well as industrial policies. After 35 years of development, Export Processing Zone (EPZ) has emerged from focusing on traditional labor-intensive industry to capital and technical intensive industry then to global logistic type of industry. Facing the impact of WTO, the need to make next transition is becoming even more urgent now. In an effort to upgrade the industry and strengthen the competence of the country, the government has assigned another responsibility on EPZ by expanding its range of function from pure manufacturing to high value-added economics activities like Off-Territory Shipment Center, Logistics Center, Software Design Center, etc. Mainland China obtained its WTO membership same time as Taiwan. They are leveraging their fast economic development and huge market potential to attract foreign and Taiwanese investments. Hence we can not exclude the influence of Mainland China while trying to discuss the WTO impacts on EPZ and how EPZ can face the big change of economic environment. This study has set following three topics: 1. The impact on EPZ as a result of Taiwan¡¦s accession to WTO. 2. What is the outlook of EPZ¡¦s new positioning. 3. Suggestions to the government, EPZ Administrations and Companies inside and outside of EPZ. This study will firstly make a brief review on both WTO and EPZ. Then explore the impacts, as well as the opportunities and threats, of WTO on both the industries in Taiwan and in EPZ. Then we will study the two major directions of EPZ¡¦s new positioning: (1) New developments as a result of new economic relationship between Taiwan and Mainland China, this includes Off-Territory Shipment Center, a base for China¡¦s companies to enter Taiwan, and the ¡§deep processing¡¨ that utilizes the advantage of integrating operations across the Taiwan Strait, and (2) New developments as a result of the expanding of EPZ¡¦s new service function, that includes R&D center, headquarter for off-shore Taiwanese companies, International Trade Companies, center for specific industry cluster and logistic center, etc. Based on the results of this study, we have made suggestions to the government, the EPZ Administration and companies inside and outside EPZ. The suggestions to the Government are: Try to form Free Trade Zone with Asia-Pacific countries and also form a ¡§Greater China Free Trade Zone¡¨ with Mainland China and Hong Kong under the condition that the political disputes are settled. Also to promote business opportunities in the developing countries by utilizing Taiwan¡¦s strengths of manufacturing and technology. Regarding the suggestions to the EPZ Administration and companies inside and outside EPZ, the suggestions are all regarding how EPZ can strengthen their service and improve the investment environment, and how companies are to fully utilize these EPZ improvements. The conclusion of this study shows following four items: 1. The accession of Taiwan to WTO is not only a crisis for EPZ, but also an opportunity. 2. EPZ has built up sound infrastructure and set the direction for its new positioning to face this challenge. 3. Whether the new positioning is fulfilled and new investment poured in will decide if the next phase transition of EPZ is successful or not. 4. EPZ acted as the pilot model for Taiwan¡¦s economic success 35 years ago, we are hoping it acts one more time the same model for Taiwan¡¦s next economic re-form.
