A Comparison of the Heart Rates and Workload Levels of Selected Male Freshman Basketball Players at Utah State University During Actual Game Competition

Leo, C. David 01 May 1973 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of physical exertion upon the heart rates and workload levels of five selected male freshman basketball players at Utah State University during actual game competition. One hour prior to each of the ten home basketball games, two E&M Surface Electrodes were mounted to the chest of the test subject with disposable double-sided adhesive washers. A biotelemetry transmitter, used for sending electrical signals from the player to a biotelemetry receive r and polygraph, was placed in a plastic sack and taped to the beltline of the subjects athletic supporter. The telemetry receiver and polygraph were located behind the Utah State University team bench. One subject was tested per game and each subject was tested twice throughout the study. The same subject was tested once every fifth home game. The data was collected with a polygraph, by means of radiotelemetry, and recorded according to mean heart (beats per minute), mean volume of oxygen (liters per minute), and mean workload (kilopondmeters per minute), which were the measurements used for the data in the statistical design. In each of these three categories, consideration and comparisons were made of: (A) offensive play, (B) ball handling, (C) defensive play, (D) defense on the ball, (E) fastbreak, (F) shooting, (G) scoring, and (H) rebounding. Data, concerning mean volume of oxygen and mean workload, were processed according to Astrand's Nomogram. A two way analysis of variance test was applied to the data to determine the significant difference between the variables. Another statistical analysis that was conducted on the data was a Newman Keuls Sequential Range Test for determining the significant difference between the eight different game situations studied throughout this study. The two way analysis of variance showed that there was a significant difference at the .05 level of confidence in the mean heart rate, mean volume of oxygen, and mean workload levels of the five subjects during the game situations mentioned above. The Newman Keuls Sequential Range Test indicated that a significant difference occurred at the .05 level between the ball handling activities (fastbreak, ball handling, and shooting) and the non-ball handling activities (rebounding, scoring, defense on the ball, defensive play, and offensive play). Also, this test showed that no significant difference occurred at the .05 level within the two groups of activities mentioned above.

Correlation Between the USU Stretch Test and the Pizza Fork Test

Moyes, Bryce L. 01 May 2003 (has links)
A correlation between the USU stretch test and the pizza fork test would allow the stretch properties of Mozzarella cheese to be measured objectively. The Utah State University (USU) Stretch Test uses a modified texture-profile analyzer to pull strands of cheese from a melted reservoir, measuring the load exerted on the probe during stretching. Parameters measured by the USU stretch test include Melt Strength (FM), which is the maximum load exerted on the probe, Stretch Load (SL), which is the load exerted on the probe at any specified point following FM, and Stretch Extension (SE), which was defined as the extension of the probe at a selected load. To begin with, it was determined that the greatest repeatability and cheese performance was obtained by tempering 50 g of shredded cheese for 45 min at 65°C and using a three-pronged hook with a diameter of 25 mm as the probe. These conditions were then applied in a correlation study in which a low correlation was seen between the USU stretch test and the pizza fork test, with the greatest correlation being seen with FM (R2 = 0.22). A more extensive look at the effect of the tempering temperature used in the USU stretch test on the degree of correlation between the two tests was conducted by tempering cheeses at 65, 70, 75, 80, and 85 °C. In this experiment, the highest correlation between the two tests was seen at both 80 and 85°C. Values of R2 at 80°C for SL10-15 and SEF (Stretch Extension at FM) were 0.75 and 0.70, respectively. At 85°C, the highest degree of correlation was seen at SL10-15 (R2 = 0.72) and SE0.1 (R2 = 0.69). A multiple linear correlation study was also conducted. A high degree of correlation between the USU stretch test and the pizza fork test was seen at 80°C when two parameters were used (SEF and SL22, R2 = 0.85, Adj. R2 = 0.80) and when four parameters were used (FM, slope from 10 to 20 em, SE0.1, and SL22, R2 = 0.97, Adj. R2 = 0.93). A set of cheese was then analyzed by the USU stretch test and the pizza fork test at three different intervals of aging (21 , 40, and 60 days after manufacture). This data was combined with previously collected data to show that the USU stretch test can be used to characterize the functional properties of a cheese using the parameters of FM, SEF, as well as SE0.1. It was concluded that the USU stretch test can provide a better characterization of a pizza cheese than can the pizza fork test. Whereas the pizza fork test is only able to record the distance that the cheese can stretch, the USU stretch test is capable of measuring a variety of parameters, which provides not only an indication of how far the cheese will stretch, but also other important functional properties related to the cheese, such as viscosity, elasticity, and the thickness of the strands being stretched.

To perform this study, it was developed a testbed in which three adressing configurations of Internet Protocol, IPv4, IPv6, and Duas Stack (IPv4+IPv6), were used to access the top 100 world most visited web pages with an IPv6 enabled address. In addiction, several software tools were developed, that enabled more than 600 simultaneous accesses between IPv4, IPv6 and Dual Stack, to each of these pages. Those accesses were performed every hour during the period of a month, enabling to obtain more than 20 GB of information on the web access. Results showed that lower loading times obtained by IPv6 and Dual Stack are related to the partial acquisition of the content. In fact, for IPv6, the number of web pages with faster loading times goes from 57 to 20% when the average number of bytes obtained by IPv6 and the IPv4 is similar. For Dual Stack the number goes from 25 to 5% given the same conditions. It was also noted that 18 of the 100 pages which were considered, no content would be presented to the user in more than 50% of the performed accesses. Regarding the preference for IPv6 instead of IPv4, on Dual Stack it was observed that 90% of the acquired content for 27 of 100 web pages was made by IPv6.

No. of bitstreams: 1 449591.pdf: 2292581 bytes, checksum: 94a8fc883817aa00f265338ce6b39228 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-04-22 / The current diversity of mobile devices with multiple functions requires that the user's attention be increasingly divided between their daily activities and notifications triggered by these devices. Whereas these notifications can generate excessive interruptions and thus be detrimental to the user's activities, it is necessary to study how to send them to reduce the annoyance of interruption of an ongoing activity, and thus diverting user attention only to the activities of their interest. Focusing on health professionals (in this case, clinicians) - who also joined the new mobile technologies at work, as a way to save time, assist in making decisions and even perform diagnostics remotely - this master s thesis aims to identify notification of these professional goals and develop a model for notifications specifically for this area (known as Mobile Health, or mHealth). In this context we developed a model for mHealth notifications based on interrupt modes as parameters Interruption, Reaction and Comprehension, and personalization of content. The model was applied in a notification system prototype and presented to user s clinicians allowing its analysis and refinement as the adequacy of the presentation settings, information types, frequency and type of proposed interruption.

Aiming to promote and encourage their use, peer help systems promote aid from applications users through the formation of pairs of users that will interact to complement the assistance provided by online help system. In this context, this study aims to support the process of users search and selection to form these pairs using recommender systems and, thus, try to qualify users understanding about the environment where they are inserted. In this regard, it was proposed a selection process of pairs that use similarity index and relevant criteria mentioned by users. This process was directed to a collaborative learning environment that was chosen because it is growing and has a wide range of user profiles and tasks making it a fertile environment for the implementation of a help system. The proposed process was implemented in a prototype of a peer help system, allowing the analysis of the pair formation that was made and thus getting information about the effectiveness of its use, and therefore making it possible to analyze the potential of the use of recommendation techniques with the process of forming pairs.

No. of bitstreams: 1 456919.pdf: 1594074 bytes, checksum: be6f174f587aa5ab3eb11944de5f19a5 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-03-27 / The popularization of softwares intended to mitigate the threats to Information Security ended up producing an incorrect notion that such artifacts can protect organizations from attack and overcome any threat. This mistaken notion may be caused by obtaining partial information on the subject or the lack of adequate awareness, being a human factor that can cause increased vulnerability, because induce a reckless behavior of users in relation to Information Systems. However, only the misconception regarding the perception of the threat and its severity does not justify the in Information Security breaches caused by human factors. Another important insight is the perceived exertion of performing actions that lead to responsible behavior in relation to Information Security, which added to aspects such as indifference to the rules of information security and human error can also be inducing factors of vulnerability and breaches in Information Security. In the present study we opted for the grounding in theories on Information Security through a behavioral approach to the user. The combination of the key concepts of these theories, previously validated in their research and applied to the present study approach, was used in order to understand the extent to which human perception of threat, stress, and disgruntlement control can induce responsible behavior before the Information Security and how that human behavior can generate vulnerability and potential breaches in Information Security. The results showed that there is an influence of Information Security orientation, provided by organizations in the perception and severity of the threat. Furthermore, by applying the linear regression technique, it was verified the relationship between disgruntlement and in relation to Information Security Safe Behaviour. Based on these findings contributions to the academic and practioneer knowledge were developed / A populariza??o de softwares que visam mitigar as amea?as ?
