Adaptive reuse of historical buildings and urban areas in Shanghai (1990-2008): a practical and critical assessmentZhang, Lu January 2009 (has links)
Adaptive reuse, as an alternative approach to the treatment of existing old buildings and urban areas, is being received more concerns in contemporary China. Taking Shanghai as an example, this thesis attempts to assess the practice of reuse of historical buildings in the urban context of Shanghai from 1990 to 2008. / In this research, the practice of adaptive reuse is studied with a focus on improving dynamic urban life through giving old buildings an advisable new use. With the aim of finding out what makes a lively and dynamic city, I employ the theory of city diversity from Jane Jacobs into my research as a theoretical basis to be tested in the research. / These investigations of Shanghai were conducted during a fieldwork in Shanghai. The case includes three types, which are respectively located in different areas in contemporary Shanghai. The first one is an alteration and upgrading of old industrial buildings on the waterfront. The second is a reuse of clusters of commercial buildings built in the colonial era on the Bund, with the ‘Bund 18’ building as a critical example. The third one is an urban renewal through adaptive reuse of traditional residential buildings in an inner city area, with a focused study on the Xintiandi area. / Through empirical analysis of these three cases, I try to examine the relationship between the buildings transformed through adaptive reuse and the urban surroundings in terms of participation or use by the various urban populations, and further explore how adaptive reuse may contribute to the generation and sustaining of diverse urban life in the urban context. / We may assume that the relationship between the city and the user is linked by urban activities, and that diversity of urban life can contribute to the healthy growth of cities. Given these assumptions, the empirical studies in this thesis suggest that the principal condition in adaptive reuse of historical buildings, for generating diverse and active urban life, is a potential in the old buildings to be ‘divided’. This includes ‘divisions’ of space, function and the category of users. Consequently, the design principles, as I would propose at the end of this study, are as follows: extracting spatial potential, creating mixed and small-scale businesses, and expanding categories of users to attract participation of a broad spectrum of the population with a diverse social background. Based on this, the practice of adaptive reuse of historical buildings can help reviving a close and dynamic relationship between the user and the physical setting, people and the city, facilitating the generation and sustaining of a diverse and healthy urban life.

>Magister Scientiae - MSc / The collection of biological information has a long history, motivated by a variety of reasons and in more recent years is largely being driven for research and academic purposes. As a result biological information is often linked to a specific species or ecosystem management and is discipline specific, not relating to general management actions at a specific conservation site. The biological data that exists is often not consolidated in a central place to allow for effective management of conservation sites. Different databases and formats are often used to cover biological, infrastructural, heritage and management information. Biological information has traditionally not influenced real-time site-specific conservation management, with long term data sets being used to draw conclusions before they can influence management actions. In order to overcome this problem of scattered and unfocused data a biodiversity database related to specific site management was developed. This study focuses on the development of this database and its links to the management of spatially defined sites. Included in the solution of scattered data are the applications of information management tools which interpret data and convert it into management actions, both in terms of long term trends and immediate real- time management actions as the information is received and processed. Information systems are always difficult to describe in words as much of the layout and information is visual and hence difficult to convey I just the text of this document. A breakdown of the resultant information system is outlined in detail in the conclusion section. During the development of a Biodiversity Database it was found that management tools had to be developed to integrated data with management. Furthermore it was found that human error was a significant factor in poor data quality; as a result an observer training programme was developed.

The term &ldquo / urban architecture&rdquo / has different meanings and is open to many interpretations. This thesis aims to highlight and further elaborate some definitions of &ldquo / urban architecture&rdquo / in which it is mainly characterized as architecture in the urban context. The Second Volume of Harvard Architecture Review on &ldquo / Urban Architecture&rdquo / is referred as a main source in discussing the content of the term. The concept of &ldquo / urban architecture&rdquo / can be identified in several theoretical contributions to the field of architecture. In this context, the themes &ldquo / urban artifact&rdquo / developed by Aldo Rossi and &ldquo / urbatecture&rdquo / developed by Bruno Zevi, are discussed in relation to &ldquo / urban architecture&rdquo / .
In order to further clarify the concept, its relation to the fields of urban design, urbanism, and landscape urbanism is investigated. While it is distinguished from these fields, &ldquo / urban architecture&rdquo / is defined as an alternative architectural design approach and not as a new field. As an approach to architectural design that operates in an expanded field including landscape design and urbanism, &ldquo / urban architecture&rdquo / points to some strategies that allow to integrate works of architecture into their urban settings.
Following this conceptual elaboration, the thesis aims at exploring the design strategies that characterize urban architecture. In this context, strategies related with landscape, infrastructure, and urban field are identified. The strategies based on these themes and their tools of operation are discussed through three case studies that cover Olympic Sculpture Park for the Seattle Art Museum, Kunsthal, and Borneo and Sporenburg.

Além da particularidade sensorial dessas pessoas e do uso da Língua Brasileira de Sinais (Libras), foi observado um caráter militante, ativista nos discursos sobre surdez, que inclui as noções de identidade, comunidade e cultura. O trabalho de campo foi realizado e encontros diversos promovidos pela Associação dos Surdos de Juiz de Fora (ASJF), tais como palestras e festas. O principal espaço de pesquisa foi o Centro de Educação e Cultura para o Ensino de Libras (CECEL), especialmente nos momentos em que funcionava como um “clube de surdos” (SACKS, 2005). / This text aims to investigate a group of deaf people in Juiz de Fora -MG, Brasil. This group claims to recognition and social inclusion. It has built a network of interactions, proposing to experience a "deaf community". Besides the sensory characteristic of these people and the use of the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), there was a militant character because of the activist discourses on deafness, including the notions of identity, community and culture. The surch has included several meetings promoted by the Association of the Deaf of Juiz de Fora (ASJF), such as lectures and parties. The main place of research was the Centro de Educação e Cultura para o Ensino de Libras (CECEL), especially at times when it operated as a "deaf club" (SACKS, 2005).

Architecture is more than mere building. Architecture is a process involving the study, observation, and solution of aesthetic and pragmatic problems. The act of building solves the pragmatic questions, but it is the architect's intellectual commitment and line of inquiry that ultimately produces architecture.
This inquiry provided the opportunity to develop and elaborate a position on the thinking and making of architecture. The study of the urban condition, structure, enclosure, multi-functional elements and photography became a base of knowledge from which to begin. The range of ideas presented were the result of a line of inquiry that became this thesis.
Quality is not inherent in an object. It must be expressed through the ideas by which it was created. In the same respect, this project does not represent the concepts, it presents them.

Caractérisation des zones calmes en milieu urbain : qu'entendez-vous par zone calme ? / Characterization of quiet areas in urban contextDelaitre, Pauline 27 June 2013 (has links)
Depuis 2002, la directive européenne 2002/49/CE demande aux grandes villes de définir des zones calmes dans leur P.P.B.E. (Plan de Prévention du Bruit dans l'Environnement) dans le but de les préserver. L'utilisation de l'indicateur acoustique Lden est suggérée mais les états membres sont libres d'en proposer d'autres. Afin d'aider les autorités en charge de l'application de cette directive, ce travail de thèse propose une approche multidisciplinaire pour mieux définir cette notion de zone calme en milieu urbain. Une étude historique du mot calme a été réalisée à travers un corpus de dictionnaire du XVIe siècle à nos jours, pour mettre en évidence les différents sens rattachés à ce mot. Il est apparu que le lien vers le domaine sonore est tardif. De plus, la notion de calme est relative ce qui la différencie de la notion de tranquillité. Pour faire émerger les représentations actuelles, des ateliers de concertation ont été réalisés à Cergy-Pontoise et Paris. Ces deux approches ont permis de proposer des critères de caractérisation des zones calmes. Une enquête de portée nationale a ensuite été menée. Elle a permis de révéler 3 types de points de vue partagés par différents groupes de population. Pour certains, une zone calme est une zone de partage, pour d'autres une zone calme est un espace naturel et pour les derniers, une telle zone doit être silencieuse. La notion de contraste qui a émergé tout au long de ce travail a été étudiée plus en détails, à partir de test d'écoute en laboratoire et à partir des cartes de bruit. Un indicateur de contraste inspiré de la détection de contours en analyse d'image a été proposé. / Since 2002, European directive 2002/49/EC asks big cities to define quiet areas in order to protect them. The use of Lden indicator is suggested but member countries are free to suggest others. In order to help authorities in charge of directive application, this PhD work proposes a multidisciplinary approach to better define the quiet area notion in urban context. An historical study of the “calme” word was carried out through a dictionary corpus from the sixteenth century to nowadays to highlight the different meanings of this word. It appeared that the link to the sound field is late. Moreover, calm notion is relative what differs of tranquility concept. To highlight current representations, workshops with inhabitants were carried out in Cergy-Pontoise and Paris. These two approaches allow us to propose criteria to characterize quiet areas. Then, a national survey was conducted. It allowed to reveal 3 types of points of view shared by different groups of people. For some, a quiet area is a sharing zone, for others, a quiet area is a natural area and for the lasts, such area must be silent. The contrast notion that emerged throughout this work has been studied in more details, using listening tests in laboratory and, using noise maps. A contrast indicator inspired from edge detection in image analysis was proposed.

Introdução - Os Guarani da Tekoa Pyau, aldeia localizada no município de São Paulo, estão cada vez mais confinados em uma pequena área e ameaçados por disputas territoriais em razão da intensificação da ocupação urbana no entorno. A escassez de terra, que impossibilita muitas atividades tradicionais, e o afluxo crescente de pessoas e mercadorias da cidade fazem com que a vida na aldeia não prescinda de produtos industrializados. Uma grande dificuldade em manter a saúde dos corpos e da vida entre os Guarani é o acesso ao tembiu etei (alimento verdadeiro), cujo conceito perpassa questões políticas, ambientais, econômicas, espirituais, sociais e de saúde. Objetivos - Pesquisar práticas e conhecimentos sobre alimentação e comensalidade na conjuntura presente da Tekoa Pyau, considerando as singularidades dessa aldeia inserida na cidade de São Paulo. Metodologia - A etnografia foi escolhida como ferramenta metodológica para busca de compreensão de um mundo em que as práticas (aqui, particularmente, as da alimentação) só podem ser apreendidas em seus significados locais. As técnicas utilizadas foram a entrevista semiestruturada com moradores guarani e trabalhadores jurua (não indígena) da aldeia e a observação participante. Houve convívio no local e fortalecimento do vínculo que já foi estabelecido em atividades de anos anteriores. De posse desse material organizado, foi realizada análise. Resultados - Os Guarani da Tekoa Pyau se esforçam para manter forte o nhandereko (nosso modo de viver) nos diversos ambientes em que ocorrem transferências de saberes entre gerações: nas matas, quintais, casas, famílias, escolas, cidades, bem como em ocasiões cotidianas e rituais. Mas a vida nessa aldeia guarani na capital paulista também implica o manejo cotidiano de relações com pessoas, coisas e saberes jurua. Os Guarani categorizam os alimentos em morto e vivo, sendo o primeiro os alimentos comprados no mercado, empacotados e que enfraquecem os corpos; já alimentos vivos são extraídos da natureza e os fortalecem. Entre os vivos, existe o avaxi etei (milho verdadeiro), dádiva de Nhanderu (Nosso Pai, divindade) e base da alimentação tradicional Guarani. Moradores da Pyau se orgulham de buscar sementes em outras aldeias para plantar ou guardar e distribuir. Na categoria de alimentos mortos, aqueles açucarados e ultraprocessados são bastante presentes. Ao fazer dialogar o material etnográfico com as políticas que envolvem Segurança Alimentar e Nutricional (SAN), pondera-se que não há consolidação da Vigilância Alimentar e Nutricional em sistema, mau uso de gerência pública com distribuição inadequada de fórmulas infantis, invisibilidade política, cestas básicas distribuídas sem frequência definida e com alimentos que não dialogam com a alimentação tradicional Guarani, além de poucos efeitos positivos das políticas do bolsa família e da alimentação escolar. Results - The Guarani of Tekoa Pyau strive to maintain strong nhandereko (\'our way of life\') in the different environments in which transfers of knowledge between generations take place: in the woods, backyards, houses, families, schools, cities, as well as in everyday occasions and rituals. But life in this Guarani village in the capital of São Paulo also implies the daily management of relationships with jurua people, things and knowledge. The Guarani categorize food as \"dead\" and \"living\". Dead are food bought on the market, packaged and that weakens the body. Then, living food are extracted from nature and strengthens the body. Among the \"living\", there is the avaxi etei (\'true corn\'), a gift from Nhanderu (\'Our Father\', divinity) and the basis of the traditional Guarani food. Residents of Pyau pride themselves on seeking seed in other villages to plant or store and distribute. Sugary and ultraprocessed food are quite present in the category of dead foods. When comparing the ethnographic material with the policies that involve Food and Nutrition Security (SAN), it is considered that, beyond the few positive effects of government family support plan, there is no consolidation of Food and Nutrition Surveillance in the system. Furthermore, there is inadequate distribution of infant formulas, political invisibility, undefined schedule to distribute food baskets and food distribution that are not compatible with the traditional Guarani diet. Conclusion - Guarani Mbya seek ways to not lose practices and knowledge that strengthen the body, particularly in the preparation of food, even if the ingredients are purchased. Its traditional knowledges essential for their development. Although the concept of SAN is based on Western conceptions, alliances to the nhandereko are necessary for the guarantee of security and food sovereignty
