Terwillegar Park: site plan and management plan

Yee, Linda C. 19 February 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this practicum is to develop a dynamic and flexible site plan and management strategy which allows Terwillegar Park, in Edmonton, Alberta, to evolve into a place rich in species biodiversity and of high ecological function; that challenges public perception of nature in the city while fostering environmental appreciation and stewardship; and which celebrates its unique identity within the North Saskatchewan River Valley. A review of the pertinent City of Edmonton municipal development plan, environmental goals/policy, parks planning and recreation planning documents are completed, as they apply to the long term planning and development of Terwillegar Park. The implied objectives derived from these documents will then be combined with a qualitative inventory and analysis, and ultimately reconciled through a site plan design and management strategy.

Socio-economic impact of an urban park : the case of Wilderness National Park / Maria Elisabeth Mouton

Mouton, Maria Elisabeth January 2009 (has links)
The social and economic contribution of tourism to local communities is now being recognised as one of the most vital aspects for the tourism industry. Literature on national parks emphasises the importance of relations between parks and communities, as well as knowledge and understanding of the social and economic impacts of parks on the development of local communities. Although national parks are seen as major tourism assets and the vital role that they play in adjacent communities is understood, still little is known about the socio-economic contribution of these parks to their respective local economies and communities. Socio-economic impact study is important since it provides information that can influence a community's attitudes and perceptions and accordingly, its behaviour, which may create a cohesive society which is important for the success of national parks. The primary goal-of this study was to determine the socio-economic impact of the Wilderness National Park (WNP) on the community of Wilderness. To achieve the above goal, secondary objectives were set, namely: to determine the socio-economic benefits of Wilderness National Park, to determine the social impact of the WNP on the community of Wilderness, to determine the length of residency as an influential factor in the social impact of tourism and to draw conclusions and make recommendations based on the results of the study. Three surveys were conducted (as quantitative research): a community survey (101 questionnaires), a business survey in Wilderness (22 questionnaires) and a tourist survey (85 questionnaires) of tourists visiting the Wilderness National Park. The research outcome contains two components: Article 1 (Chapter 2), a socio-economic impact study (where all three surveys were used); and Article 2 (Chapter 3), a social impact study of length of residency (where only the community survey was used). Research for both articles was undertaken at Wilderness. Article 1 is titled: "The socio-economic benefits of Wilderness National Park". The main purpose of this article was to determine the socio-economic benefits of the WNP to the community of Wilderness. Results indicated that the Park has an impact in terms of production, income generation and employment, and that it is also achieving its goal with regard to conservation, creating economic opportunities and involving the community of Wilderness. Only 24% of businesses indicated that their existence is due to the Wilderness National Park. However, guesthouses and Bed and Breakfast establishments indicated that they benefit most from the Park since 62,1% of the accommodation units' turnover is due to the Park. Food and restaurants indicated that 7,5% of their business is due to the Park, while tourism services estimated this contribution at 33,3%. The results confirm that the total economic leakage percentage is well above 50%, indicating that the urban areas face high leakages. However, in terms of employment creation, the fact that 100% of all workers live in the area under consideration is an indication that the benefits of the Park reach the community members. Overall, the results indicated that the total impact of the Wilderness National Park on the local economy was R12,8 million and that it is an effect of the total spending by visitors. Aspects driving the social value/benefits include improvement of the area; that the Park leads to an increased awareness of nature and wildlife; that it preserves local culture and nature; that the appearance of the area has improved; and that the Park provides the community with an opportunity to visit natural areas. Results further indicated that the Park has a greater social impact/benefit than economic impact/benefit because it is situated in an affluent community. Article 2 is titled: "Length of residency as an influential factor in the social impact of tourism". The main aim of this article was to determine if length of residency influences the social impact of the influence on the community of Wilderness. It further showed that length of residency helps predict positive and negative perceptions of the residents in terms of the environmental, social and economic aspects of tourism. It was found that, since to the establishment of the WNP, the residents which have been living in Wilderness for a shorter period of time indicated that they experienced the social aspects positively, the economic aspects both as equally positive and negative, but regard the environmental aspects as more positive than negative, whereas the residents that have been living in Wilderness for a longer period indicated that they experienced the environmental aspects positively, the social aspects more negatively, and a more negative than positive experience regarding the economic aspects. Thus, length of residency is definitely an influential factor in the social impact of tourism on the community of Wilderness. The results of both articles confirm that the community felt that the Park does have a positive to very positive effect on the quality of the community and has a greater social, rather than economic, impact on the community of Wilderness. The results indicated that length of residency does help predict perceptions of social impacts and is thus definitely an influential factor of the social impact of tourism on the community of Wilderness. This study contributes to the literature available on the (1) socio-economic impacts/benefits of urban parks (WNP), and (2) length of residency as an influential factor in social impacts of tourism. / Thesis (M.A. (Tourism))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2010.

PARQUE ITAIMBÉ - SANTA MARIA/RS: GÊNESE DE UM ESPAÇO PÚBLICO/PRIVADO / ITAIMBÉ PARK - SANTA MARIA/RS CREATION OF A PUBLIC/PRIVATE SPACE

Benaduce, Marcia Isabel de Vargas 21 August 2007 (has links)
The present study aims to investigate the process of construction of 'Itaimbé' Park, in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul state to understand its current function as a public/private space. This construction was possible because of the program 'Urban Community for an Accelerated Recovery' in the administration of Osvaldo Nascimento da Silva (1977-1982). The specific objectives of this research were: to carry out an analysis of the process of usage and occupation of the park area and its surroundings in the period within the beginning of the construction and nowadays; evaluate how the transformations affected the daily lives of the inhabitants and investigate the role of the public governments in planning and executing the building. The principal methodological procedures carried out to reach these goals were: time analysis of the area through several materials, up-to-date information collecting and recognition of field space configurations, photographic survey and interviews. The result is structured in six chapters: introduction, characterization of the studied area, methodology, theoretical thesis, results and discussions and finally, conclusions and recommendations. The dissertation is still composed by the bibliography and by the attached material (texts and images which have not been included in its main body). It is concluded that the process of building the park and its consequent maintenance involved many faulty aspects: reduced popular participation, irregular alterations in the original project, wrong management, among others, it ends up not having involvement with the population and has no value as a leisure, recreational area or one which can simply be used for social co-existence. In order to change this situation it would be necessary to create new functions for that area, adapting it to the cotemporaneous demands to avoid the same historical mistakes when planning and building new parks in the city area / O presente estudo objetiva investigar o processo de construção do Parque Itaimbé, em Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, para compreender a atual função do mesmo como espaço público-privado.

In order to overcome limitations of currentelly thermal comfort models, new investigations has been conducted to identify the thermal comfort in open spaces or free running buildings. Inserted in this context, this study has as general objective to evaluate the thermal sensation of the visitors of an urban park (Bica) in João Pessoa-PB, a city of hot and humid weather climate in Northeastern Brazil. As methodology, we used microclimatic monitoring of the variables: air temperature, globe temperature, humidity, wind speed and solar radiation. Questionnaires were also applied to visitors to assess the feeling of thermal comfort within the park. The microclimatic data were collected with the aid of a portable meteorological station DAVIS and a thermal stress meter - TGD300. To carry out the statistical analyzes was used the STATISTIC 7.0 program. Through statistical analysis it was possible to identify a comfort range between 23-31°C. The logistic regression model showed that three climate variables (air temperature, wind speed and mean radiant temperature) have significant effect on the thermal sensation vote felt by respondents. When the thermal sensation vote was compared to the PMV/PPD index, it was verified in loco was always in a lower category to the PMV. The results found in this research can help in planning the city in the search for a more banlanced urban environmrt, rspecially with regard to thermal confort.

Does Context Matter? Understanding the Urban Design Requirements of Successful Neighborhood Parks

January 2013 (has links)
abstract: Literature on the design and management of urban parks has been informed by empirical research on the value of public space in terms of economic value, public health, social, and environmental benefits. Although there is significant value in discussing these benefits, there has been a lack of understanding about the production of public space as a normative goal. Neighborhood parks have been recognized as one of the key urban public spaces that serve the social, economic, and environmental needs of adjacent neighborhoods. However, relevant studies mostly focus on the contribution of neighborhood parks as discrete space, instead of neighborhood parks as built spaces within the urban context. This research provides a better understanding of the relationship between the context of surrounding neighborhoods and the success of neighborhood parks. The research addresses two major research questions. First, what are the major characteristics of the morphological context around neighborhood parks? Second, how do the characteristics of morphological context associate with the success of neighborhood parks? For the first question, the `context' refers to the layout and configuration of urban form including blocks, parcels, and buildings; street network; pedestrian-oriented attributes; and property land uses. For the second question, the `success' of neighborhood parks is defined by property/ violent crime rate. The study is based on a quarter mile buffer area around 150 neighborhood parks in the City of Chicago, Illinois. The research employed factor and cluster analysis to develop a typology of neighborhood park contexts. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to identify the relationship between park morphological contexts and crime rate. Based on understanding the dimensional structure of urban form elements, neighborhood park surroundings were classified into six categories. This study provided an alternative way of constructing public space typology based on surrounding urban form. The findings of regression analysis revealed that variables associated with higher-density, permeability, and mixed-use development do not necessarily correlate with reduced property/ violent crime rates. However, some variables representing `traditional neighborhood' characteristics were correlated with lower property/ violent crime rates. The study provides guidelines for urban design and physical planning strategies for neighborhood park development. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Environmental Design and Planning 2013

Monitoramento de parques urbanos em fundos de vale: análise das funções de conservação e uso público - estudos de casos múltiplos em Curitiba, Paraná / Monitoring Urban Parks in River Corridors: analysis of the functions of conservation and public use multiple case studies in Curitiba, Paraná

Larissa Fernanda Vieira Martins 29 October 2014 (has links)
The Urban Parks are characterized as the main free area for leisure and recreation of population and the main form of upkeep of natural systems environmental urban. In order that those spaces can perform with their function the public administration should manage from form equitable the aspects naturals and recreation and lounge. The main objective this research was to evidence the potential inefficiency of conciliation between the functions of Public Use and Conservation in urban parks of ecological typology, located in river corridors. Was adopted as hypothesis that, equity dont happen due to landscape conception, what favor the public, use to install equipment and infrastructure intended to population in originally fragile areas, allowing the conservation become as secondary aspect. For this, developed a system of monitoring through qualified indicators and measured by scores, which aimed at identifying elements who can subsidize performance of the duties cited, segregating the indicators in two categories: i) Public Use (7 indicators) and ii) Conservation (7 indicators); for set the existence of conciliation, the indicators were synthesized in two numerical indices (Conservation Indice (CI) and Public Use Indice (PUI), staggered between 0 and 10) and subsequently crossed in a interaction matrix, which allows interfere 5 grade of conciliation: i) High Equity, ii ) Good Equity, iii)Moderate Equity, iv) Low Equity and v) Nonexistent Equity. With the aim to ensuring the replicability, the system was applied in 3 (three) parks in Curitiba (PR), with different characteristics of formation and landscape conception. The first analysis unit, the Municipal Park Nascentes do Belém show the best CI (9,6) and the PUI lowest (2,8) assigning area of compliance function of conservation and the low assigning of function of public use, allowing not occur reconciliation, classifying as Low Equity; the Municipal Park Cajuru, obtain a CI of 4,7 points and a PUI of 5,1, factor that indicates that functions are fulfilled moderately and that reconciliation occurs between them; the Municipal Park Passúna, submitted the best CI and PUI, respectively, 8,2 and 7,3 points, presenting conditions of equilibrium between the functions. According with the result obtained, the initial hypothesis are refuted, principally because of the study on Municipal Park Nascentes do Belem, which was found large attention for upkeep of natural aspects and the failure of elements for purposes of public use, occurring exactly the opposite of the conjecture raised; Studies conducted in the Park Cajuru and Passaúna, corroborates to the results. The monitoring system was efficient for its purpose, in point out that the park meets with the functions and occurs conciliation, according to previously established criteria, while pointing out possible flaws failures in management and priority areas to guide management.

Despite the large number of parks in Goiania, the most structured are located in central areas, which difficults the population access to this type of public facility. The Flamboyant Park is among the most structured in the city, becoming a leisure alternative for a portion of the population. To understand how the appropriation process has occurred as well as its use for leisure activities, it was necessary to perform a theoretical review about leisure, to verify how the park implementation has occurred, which are its characteristics and the various recreational uses identified during the field research. An analysis of form and content of the Park and of the profile, use and perceptions of the respondents allowed uncovering a little more about the social and political dynamics that shape and permeate the city of Goiania. Under the assumption that shape reveals contents, the landscape analysis has revealed current ideologies and contradictions in the city. The fact that the park has a superior structure compared to parks located in peripheral districts demonstrates the investment from public authorities aiming to meet the interests of property market agents. As to the ownership of this public space, the research has revealed that the regular goers, the ones who in fact appropriate the park, are the ones who live nearby, or who possess individual means of transportation capable of providing quick access to the location. Therefore, a large part of the population is excluded from this ownership, as they never go to the park or only seldom visit it. Despite this segregating character, the park contributes to a life quality improvement and increases sociability of a large part of the goianiense population, which can be observed by the several leisure practices identified in this space. The difference between programmed behavior and transgressing behavior stands out among these activities, which demonstrates the richness and complexity of meanings a space can reveal.

Mikesková, Denisa January 2013 (has links)
Residential Brno - Řečkovice A main task of this diploma thesis to propose the use of previosly undeveloped areas for the housing and also establish to the original structure of the village comunity by effective utilization of these areas. The ground is located in distrikt Řečkovice and Mokrá Hora in Brno. The Řečkovice cadastral is defined by Žilkova and Terezy Novákové street. North protperty line is determined by Ivanovice cadastral number 1035/26. The site is bounded by existing terraced and detached houses and apartment buildings on the northeast side. The south side is is formed by former barracks and northwest side provide open countryside towards Ivanovice. The development is designed to became a separate distrikt of Brno. The funcitonal areas are able to place residental house of different categories, also public facilities, recreation areas and public open space with all kinds of greenery. A main idea of the concept was to create residental comlex with a functional center that will not compete to existing center of Řečkovice. Densities are highest by the main road following the expected denser development of former barracks. They decreases ito the existing development along Žilkova street. The protective zone for pipeline is used as a city park. The proposed concept of functional areas clearly define continuity and transport infrastructure by design of buildings in different categories that meets all needs of future residents. Plenty of green space for recreation will also ensure functionality and efficient use of this unit.
