Shigatoxin E. coli (STEC) in Public Park at Different Seasons of the Year

Smith, Victor, Patel, Ankit, Ford, Emily, Macariola, Demetrio, M.D., Yu, Alex 13 May 2020 (has links)
BACKGROUND: In the U.S. STEC HUS is the most common cause of acute renal failure in children. In TN from 1996-2017 there were 2008 STEC cases were reported. Every year in the U.S, there 36 reported mortality each year. At our local children’s hospital, 4-5 children are hospitalized with STEC infection each year. Some of these children had no history of ingesting food items that could have placed them at risk to develop STEC infection; however, there are other ways that humans could get infected, such as exposure to contaminated water from cattle farms. GOALS: To determine if there are differences in the presence of STEC at a local park at different seasons of the year. METHODS: Fifty (50) ml of water samples were collected from a creek in 2 areas of public park in Johnson City, TN. Samples were inoculated to Sorbitol McConkey Agar (SMAC) plates under sterile techniques & incubated at 36C for 18 hours under aerobic conditions. RESULTS: Table demonstrating presence of STEC from water samples at different seasons of the year. SEASON OF THE YEAR # COLONIES FOUNDERS PARK # COLONIES LIBRARY PARK SUMMER JUNE 2018 A:1 B:1 C:2 TOTAL: 4 A: 3 B: 2 C: 1 TOTAL: 6 FALL SEPT 2018 A: 1 B: 3 C: 2 TOTAL: 6 A: 1 B:2 C:4 TOTAL: 7 WINTER DEC 2018 A: 1 B: 0 C: 1 TOTAL: 2 A: 0 B: 1 C: 1 TOTAL: 2 SPRING MARCH 2019 A: 2 B: 2 C:1 TOTAL: 5 A: 0 B: 0 C: 0 TOTAL: 0 DISCUSSION/ CONCLUSION: STEC was present at almost every season of the year. Public health measures should be undertaken to inform the community that these waters around public parks are contaminated with STEC to prevent STEC infection. ASSESSING THE DEGREE OF ACCESS TO URBAN PUBLIC PARKS FOR OLDER ADULTS IN THE VILLAGES METROPOLITAN AREA OF FLORIDA, 2017

Wang, Yingsong 01 January 2019 (has links)
With the rapid urbanization, the urban residents' demand for urban public parks is increasing. As a unique and representative age group, older adults put forward new requirements for the evaluation and rational planning of urban parks. Park accessibility is an important index reflecting the rationality of park layout, the accessibility of residents to the park and the social equity of park services. In this paper, buffer analysis and network analysis based on the ArcGIS platform were selected to analyze service accessibility and green transportation accessibility of The Villages metropolitan area of Florida respectively and then make a summary analysis. In particular, this paper chooses service area, common facilities, and recreational amenities as the evaluation factors of service accessibility. Besides, the coverage area of three modes of green transportation, namely walking, public transportation and bicycle, in different periods is selected as the evaluation factor of green transportation accessibility in this paper. The results show that: 1) The accessibility level of the study area is generally low, and more than half of the study area is not within the service scope of the park. 2) The urban parks serving the study area are relatively unevenly distributed; the road network is imperfect, and there are open circuit and blank area. 3) Park accessibility ratio of four modes of transportation in different time levels motor vehicles > bicycles > walking > public transportation. The research results can provide a reference for the optimization of the spatial layout of public parks in age-friendly cities.

Terwillegar Park: site plan and management plan

Yee, Linda C. 19 February 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this practicum is to develop a dynamic and flexible site plan and management strategy which allows Terwillegar Park, in Edmonton, Alberta, to evolve into a place rich in species biodiversity and of high ecological function; that challenges public perception of nature in the city while fostering environmental appreciation and stewardship; and which celebrates its unique identity within the North Saskatchewan River Valley. A review of the pertinent City of Edmonton municipal development plan, environmental goals/policy, parks planning and recreation planning documents are completed, as they apply to the long term planning and development of Terwillegar Park. The implied objectives derived from these documents will then be combined with a qualitative inventory and analysis, and ultimately reconciled through a site plan design and management strategy.

Broad to Marshall Bridge | A City Block Interior That Separates and Connects Place

Smith, Emily 27 April 2012 (has links)
This is a project about an old city block. It once housed confectioners, jewelers, restaurateurs, pharmacists, and retailers in street-level parcels with residents in the apartments above. Now, it is home to a barber, a few restaurateurs, and street vendors. Over 200 years of building and development have shaped what is now the north 100 block of E Broad Street and although most of it still stands, it shows the effects of renovations, time, and neglect. This is also a project about paths. As sidewalks move pedestrians along streets they provide paths to retailers, employers, homes, and places to gather and be. Instead of traveling alongside the city block, this project proposes a pedestrian path through it. By stitching together a series of fractured building parcels, the path begins and ends three hundred feet apart at the sidewalks of Broad and Marshall streets. Lastly, this is a project about movement. This bridge between Broad and Marshall Streets serves as a bridge between two different types of places. The collection of parcels that are united in purpose for the sake of this work touch with walls, floors, and ceilings and where they do, create opportunity for passage. Horizontal movement through the city block happens through large volumes defined by planes and program. Vertical movement occurs through perforated shafts and open layers that allow for users to comprehend distance and direction traveled.

Ongoing places, generated traces : An exploration of realtions, translations and temporarity in city planning transformation

Justusson Lahti, Elina January 2022 (has links)
This project is an exploration of co-produced space in a city planning process. With the intention of exploring participatory design processes in the field of spatial design, this project is focusing on co-production of space and the role and power of the architect as a relational and spatial initiator. Since participatory design processes have become an implemented tool in municipal city planning, it is of relevance from a perspective of interior architecture to through practical work be both specific, aware and transparent about how these processes could be designed.  The project takes place in a public park in Gottsunda, a district south of Uppsala, built as a part of the Swedish million programme in the 1960’s- and -70’s. Gottsunda is now undergoing a city planning transformation and expansion. With background of city planning and architecture from that time, this project has been seeking knowledge of what relevance participation plays in city planning today.  This project has been conducted through a series of spatial activities at site, historical research and meetings with a group of teenage girls living in Gottsunda.  The conclusions and implications of this project are that the interior architect’s tools as tactile and close to both object, places and users, in this case residents, are of relevance in city planning. Participation is relational, and the interor architect's ability is to both design, understand and translate those relations into the practice of spatial design. / <p>Bilder har tagits bort i enlighet med upphovsrättslagen.</p>

However, with capitalist consideration and the insertion of neo-liberalism principles, it became normal in the practice of urban interventions to transform daily reality into scenes of a spectacle; making cities into goods to be consumed by a selected portion of society. Such interventions are now embedded in political discourses and practices of entrepreneurs, which aim economic success through the improved urban environment. To this end speculation is involved in all phases of the process, prompting and reinforcing the effects produced by these interventions. Gentrification and social exclusion are some of the consequences that occur when the government is an ally or became negligent in the face of actions against the private sector. In the city of Goiania two cases of rehabilitation in idle areas and the referred bilateral joint interests have occurred. Therefore the present study is based on two interventions - Vaca Brava and the Flamboyant parks - both in Goiania.

Zelená prostranství ve městě, jejich vývoj a proměna na příkladu Prahy v 19. a 20. století / Green spaces in the city, their evolution and transformation on the example of Prague in 19th and 20th century

Kubecová, Barbora January 2012 (has links)
Green space is an essential part of the city urbanism. Research dedicated to development of the greenery and emergence of the first public parks contributes substantially to the understanding of urban issues and urban history. Green space has an aesthetic function, but is also a socially stratified space. Every city has its own unique greenery. It is not different in the case of Prague, whose dominant - Prague Castle creates unique linking of urban and green with Petřín and Malá Strana. The thesis "Green spaces in the city, their development and transformation on the example of Prague in the 19th and 20th century" aims to bring the historical development of Prague's greenery, especially the creation of public green space and point out the fact that people commonly accepted phenomenon of public parks was not always a matter of course. Development of green space, the struggle for its development and rescue, employed clubs, societies and individuals and has become one of the priorities for urban policy. Mainly the contemporary guides were used as a source for this work and for describing the emergence of the first public parks in the 19th century and the transformation of types of urban green areas. Other sources featured professional literature, contemporary book- published titles, memoirs, maps,...

Aplicação do design gráfico para o desenvolvimento de mobiliário urbano

Moroni, Janaina Luisa da Silva January 2008 (has links)
The project of public spaces, as ideal place, needs a high investment. The opening of licitations for professionals of other states, different from where the implantation will be made, can bring negative consequences in the projected urban furniture. This happens because these professionals plan, many times, in agreement with the experiences of their local city, generating urban furniture out of the context with respect to cultural standard, visual identity of the city, ideal installation, access of the universal user and the type of more convenient material, for example. Due to it this, this research aims to investigate and to generate tools for professionals that work with urban furniture. The ABNT, through the NBR9383, divides the urban furniture in categories. The focus of this work is the research, through analyses and interpretations of historical archives, photographs and data of public managers, the Infrastructure, Information and Visual Communication category, specifically in what it says respect to the public place and signalling plates. A methodology for urban furniture project is presented, exemplified by the evolution of a quiz and the graphic design to create a visual identity in the "Street of the Antiquários" in Porto Alegre, with the production of application "Geraplaca", to help the designers in the creation of signaling plates and street plate of standardized form with respect to the choice of the letter, diagramming, production comments, finishing and installation. This way, production expenses can be diminished and the communication language among several different professionals who work with urban planning can be unified.
