The internal structure of cities reflects the actions in the past that are in progress in the present. / The present research aimed to investigate the relation between youth and music, in particular the heavy metal, looking forward to analyze the “headbanger” social construction in the rock and heavy metal environment. Considering the young people acting as expression of contemporary young cultures, as far as they express the group experiences and preferences, this work’s purpose was to use the results of an ethnographic investigation to comprehend how life style is built from choosing rock and heavy metal as a musical predilection. The analyzed background was the city of Juiz de Fora – MG, where there is a specific market for headbangers customs, namely specialized stores, rehearsal studios, music schools, pubs, concert halls, tattoo and body piercing studios, among other examples. The investigation was divided into three analytical lines: the first one is about the usage of urban space by headbangers and how they create a interactional meshwork among them. The second line explores how consumption goods become more symbolical according to daily routines, allowing to tie meanings and linking people and groups. The third one examines the process of becoming a headbanger, considering the changes the person goes through when initiated in the rock and heavy metal movement. This investigation expects to disclose the importance of music in these young people daily routines, as well as its capacity of intervention, the choice of certain spaces of the city as social points, and the use of accessories as a display of individual tastes, aesthetic and identity.

Under the city-facing contemporary transformations viewpoint it is necessary to comprehend the relations between public spaces and its users, which can be characterized by the social and spatial activities and daily use. The objective of this research is to present the research and analysis of the street race practice that takes place in the public spaces of the city of Juiz de Fora (MG) – especially in three street running events: the 70° Corrida da Fogueira (Barão do Rio Branco Avenue); the 2ª Corrida Correndo das Drogas (Garcia Rodrigues Paes Avenue/ Acesso Norte) and the 1ª Corrida e Caminhada Faefid (Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora). Throughout a review of the literature on leisure and, more precisely, on street running as leisure activity and non-systematic observations, it is possible to identify the spatial characteristics dynamics in the different spaces of the urban territory analyzed, as well as the social consequences of these events that interfere with the city’s propaganda and even its citizens life quality. It is concluded that the street running also represented as one of the various leisure activities, is increasingly present on the cities’ public spaces, as a practice that reveals, directly and indirectly, the landscape’s physical issues, the city flow, urban routes and more subjective issues related to sports marketing, territorial inequalities, sociabilities, public policies and social assistance as well.

Le cas de Mircea Eliade, Jean Ray et Howard Phillips Lovecraft / Spaces of the urban fantastic and aspects of the sacred. The case of Mircea Eliade, Jean Ray et Howard Phillips Lovecraft

Rizea Barbos, Carmen Raluca 30 November 2009 (has links)
During the 20th century, fantastic fiction seems to be the outcome of a triple conflict also attached to contemporary societies : a gap between the real world and the supernatural; an identity crisis in a meaningless post-modern era; and, a gradual divestment of ancient sacred symbols. In this highly problematic reference frame, obscured even more in anticipation of an alarming near future, Modern Man desperately struggles to alleviate his multiple fears through fantastic literature ; he creates imaginary monsters in order to help him cope with reality. Nevertheless, the encroaching of the Supernatural or the uncanny in the modern urban enclosed space is connected to the need that traditional societies expressed for the presence of the sacred in their universe. Throughout the works of three authors, Mircea Eliade, Jean Ray and H.P. Lovecraft, the urban and profane space paradoxically becomes a space of the fantastic par excellence. The disil! lusionment of the modern world finds itself exposed to and confronted by both topical and archaic beliefs. Thus, the urban fantastic effect is constantly reassessing features of the sacred and allows rich interpenetrations of different disciplines such as literature and history of religions.

Reappropriating Public Space in Nanchang, China: A Study of Informal Street Vendors

Winter, Bryan C. 03 July 2017 (has links)
Since China's shift to market socialism, many marginalized by this process work as informal street vendors where they reappropriate public space in order to survive―a practice at odds with urban authorities' modernizing agenda. In relation to these competing logics concerning public space's use value versus its exchange value, this dissertation examines the practices, experiences, and agency of informal street vendors working in Sanjingwuwei, an ordinary, yet rapidly gentrifying, neighborhood of Nanchang, capital and largest city of southeastern China's Jiangxi Province. After describing the growth of an informal economy in modern China and providing a history of street vending, I describe the everyday practices of vendors and their reappropriation of public space in Nanchang and the Sanjingwuwei neighborhood. I then provide the socio-demographic details of Sanjingwuwei’s vendors and use their voices to demonstrate how city image protection, a burgeoning informal sector, and the globalization of urban space bring challenges to their already precarious work in the streets. The dissertation concludes by linking the practices and agency of Nanchang’s vendors into a theoretical discussion concerning the agency of informal street workers. Despite daily attempts by the local state to remove them, this study shows how Nanchang's street vendors, continue to actively engaging in alternative forms of urban space-making through reappropriating of public space. Therefore, this dissertation shows how vendors challenge the city as a system by downscaling, slowing down, decommodifying, and ultimately, deglobalizing urban space to neighborhood-level through their reappropriation of public space.

Les monastères et l'espace urbain et périurbain médiéval en Pays d'Aude : Lagrasse, Alet et Caunes / Monasteries and urban and periurban spaces during the Middle Ages in pays d'Aude : Lagrasse, Alet and Caunes

Foltran, Julien 21 November 2016 (has links)
Through the examples of Lagrasse, Alet-les-Bains and Caunes-Minervois, this thesis intends to determine the mechanisms and the stakeholders’ role in the development of monastic towns in the Aude department from the 8th century to the mid-16th century. The modes of settlement on these sites are examined, as well as the relations between the religious community and the inhabitants. The construction of urban space in these medium-sized medieval towns is one of the main topics addressed through the inventory of houses, the analysis of historic plans and of medieval or modern written sources. The peri-urban space is regarded as an area allowing both communities to secure a part of their supplies and, in this sense, as a space they had to share and that was essential to the relations between them.

L’Atelier Parisien d’Urbanisme tra rénovation e forma urbana (1967-1989) : il ruolo di un’agenzia pubblica nella trasformazione dello spazio urbano a Parigi : i casi delle Halles e del secteur de La Villette / The Atelier Parisien d’Urbanisme Between Renovation and Urban Form (1967-1989) : the role of a public agency within the transformation of urban space : the cases of les Halles and La Villette

Campobenedetto, Daniele 13 April 2015 (has links)
Between the end of the 1960s and the 1980s, the city of Paris faced a period of extensive urban transformation and a change in the strategies of this transformation at the same time, in comparison with the heroic Trente Glorieuses. The analysis of these architectural and urban changes and the processes of implementation, are often based on a morphological or a policiy-oriented perspective. Moreover, in France, the study of decision-making processes and urban transformation falls within the scope of social sciences. This has resulted in an unfortunate separation of academic approaches: one focusing on finding the link between the theories of the architectural community or policies and the projects, while the other taking the already transformed urban space as a starting point for social analysis. This research aims to investigate the gap between these two methodological approaches, both influential in France during the 1970s and 1980s, through an urban history-oriented study. The main goal of the thesis is to explore the role of the Atelier Parisien d'Urbanisme (hereafter APUR), a bureaucratic entity charged of several different tasks, within the shift from urban renovation to urban form, concerning the city of Paris.Between 1967 and 1989, the APUR had an essential part in translating the aforementioned shift into operative terms, in connection with those institutions that had the power to transform large areas of the French capital. This was possible thanks to a negotiation process involving different institutions , as well as architects and urban designers, in which APUR took a major role. In this context the research will also investigate the relationship between the cultural references and the processes through which urban spaces have been converted. Two case studies allow an analysis of these urban changes and of the role played by the APUR: the transformations of the Halles Centrales of Paris, and the projects for the secteur de la Villette, especially those for Place Stalingrad (Bernard Huet, 1985-89) and Parc de la Villette during the first competition organized by APUR (1976).These two cases are intertwined. On one hand, they illustrate a cultural point of view; on the other hand, they give an account of institutional and political processes, showing a transformation that occurred throughout the whole city. Finally, they cross the trajectory of some of the most emblematic figures in French architecture at that time. One of them was Bernard Huet, a teacher, theorist, critic and designer who played an fundamental role in the definition of a new cultural paradigm. The research shows a change in the process of transformation of urban space in Paris. The practices shifted from projects which were generated through vivid debate, strongly linked to contemporary French social sciences, to a later standardization of urban projects and urban imaginaire and a cultural legitimation of APUR. The central role of APUR in the two case studies is analysed by comparing the Atelier's archives, the ones of the architects involved in the urban projects as well as the ministerial and presidential ones. Oral sources are restricted to a control role. In the end this work aims to highlight the process of city-making trough the role of a public bureaucracy within urban transformations: an active contribution which led, between 1967 and 1989, to the definition of the contemporary conception of the city of Paris

The National urban policy in the last decade, incorporated significant urban instruments as the City Statute and the Participative Master Plan in order to conciliate public interests and assure democratic management of the city. Although urban planning and housing are deeply interrelated, both has taken different ways, what has increased the process of segregation and exclusion in big cities and even in small towns, where the system of housing has been followed the same poor model of the bigger ones: standardized arid outskirts housing, lack of infrastructure and urban services. This research aims to present a study about Participative Master Plans and its connection to housing matters. The hypothesis is that the recent urban instruments like City Statute and Participative Master Plans haven¿t accomplished an effective social role of the city when it refers to inclusion and a reversal of segregation process, considering housing of social interest. Thus, the objective of this study was to verify the effects of Participative Master Plans and new urban instruments into the legislation designs, and urban and housing politics in small towns. In order to confirm the hypothesis, it was carried out a case study in small towns in the region in the Midwestern of Paraná State, in order to identify how quality has responded social interest housing held by the recent urban planning in the light of the recent City Statute, as well as its space reflection relating to insertion and implantation in the city. The results show there must be conditions and directives to set dialogue between urban planning and housing of social interest so that more humanized cities may be built and connected to socio environmental demand per housing / Doutorado / Arquitetura, Tecnologia e Cidade / Doutora em Arquitetura, Tecnologia e Cidade

In the course of the last century, the Brazilian territory has been experienced hardly changes. In this way, incipient process of a initially selective urbanization was observed with a highly concentration of the economic activities and inhabitants located in a few towns mainly in the metropolitan regions. From the last five decades, the urbanization becomes widespread however in a concentrated form. All of these urbanization process was acconpanied by changes on it's ways of working, it show that the development from history of the brazilian territory and also was accompanied by techniques which through that worktool and procedure the men manufacture, get and come true in their lives. The technification process of brasilian space was from simple mechanization of space and a setting up of mean technical scientific informational. However, all these technique framework is not delivered equality by space, but it show a concentrated means more moderns on determinated regions like the Southern Region where the work division territorial is more intense. In the couse of this urbanization process and modelling territory by differents tecnics means, distincs flows and demograph dinamics circumscribed space, however in some places with more intensity, for instance, the southern region. Seen in this terms this work has the objective of surmising the relation between space technification and the phenomenon of population spatial mobility. Like analyisis spatial unit has a Metropolitan Region of Paraiba Valey and North Coast locality where the historic process circumscribed differents technical means, noting in something else the presence of a technical scientific informational milieu and a intense work territory division, such places are circumscribe by one of the most crowed people, just as well by regularities migration flows. The phenomenon analysis of population spatial mobility , such as the population characteristics migrant and resident were done based on demographic census of 1991.2000 and 2010 evidencing the different current demographic and socio-spatial which demarcated the region / Mestrado / Demografia / Mestra em Demografia
