SPECTRAL EFFICIENCY/BIT ERROR RATE OF FQPSK AND OTHER NON-COHERENT SYSTEMS SUPERIOR TO COHERENT SYSTEMS FOR SMS AND BURSTED TDMA AND CDMA SYSTEMS

McCorduck, James A., Feher, Kamilo 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 21, 2002 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California / For faster acquisition in bursted environments for SMS (Short Messaging Service) and other lower-bit rate applications, non-coherent detection techniques are proposed. Non-Coherent detection demodulators are proposed because faster acquisition capability in bursted environments can result in a reduced amount of preamble bits in the messaging frame, i.e. less overhead, resulting in an effective increase in spectral efficiency. Reducing the preamble can also provide performance enhancement opportunities for Feher Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (FQPSK) [1] and for other systems. The preamble can also be varied to provide for better Bit Error Rate (BER) performance. The lower bit rate environment also gives the opportunity to employ simpler architectures in lieu of preamble modification. Several non-coherent detection alternatives are described.

Comparison of Enoxaparin Versus Aspirin for Thromboprophylaxis in Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital Patients after a Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) or Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA)

Fung, Sierra, Jankowski, Mika January 2017 (has links)
Class of 2017 Abstract / Objectives: The first aim is to assess efficacy of aspirin versus enoxaparin in preventing a venous thromboembolism (VTE) after a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) or total hip arthroplasty (THA) within 30 days after discharge. The second aim is to assess the safety of aspirin versus enoxaparin in preventing major bleeding events after a TKA or THA within 30 days after discharge. Methods: This study was a retrospective cohort study with data obtained from an online Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital database. For analysis, the primary outcome was assessed with a Chi-Square test, and the secondary outcome was reported with descriptive statistics. Results: Results: Demographics for 374 patients (TKA, n = 275; THA, n = 99): 90% male, average age of 65, average body mass index (BMI) of 32, 26% smokers, 72% had a history of hypertension, and 60% had a history of dyslipidemia. VTE events 30 days post-operatively: enoxaparin (n = 2), enoxaparin/aspirin (n = 1), and aspirin (n = 2) (P-value = 0.78). Safety events (major bleeding events): enoxaparin (n = 42), enoxaparin/aspirin (n = 7), and aspirin (n = 4). Conclusions: There was no significant difference between the treatment groups for VTE rate 30 days post- operation. The enoxaparin treatment group had the greatest number of safety events compared to the other groups.

Neighborhood Inclusion and Quality in Richmond, VA: An Empirical Review of Neighborhoods in the Richmond Region Based on Factors of Racial and Economic Inclusion and Quality of Life.

Tuttle, Samuel 06 August 2012 (has links)
This thesis is an empirical review of neighborhoods in the Richmond Region based on factors of inclusion and quality of life. The research attempts to answer the question of whether or not healthy and inclusive neighborhoods exist in the Richmond Region, and if they do what factors they hold in common. Inclusion and quality of life are identified using census data, school assessment reports, HUD reports, and cause-of-death data applied at the neighborhood level (census tract). This data is used to identify neighborhoods within the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) that have a high quality of life and include racial minorities and low-to-moderate income households at a rate that reflects the region as a whole. Finally, the census tracts that fit these criteria are analyzed to determine correlating factors. The analysis determined that inclusive census tracts with a high quality of life tend to be majority-black suburban neighborhoods located near the urban cores or Richmond and Petersburg. These neighborhoods had a mix of housing types, moderate homeownership rates, newer housing options, access to public schools, access to commercial goods and services, and households with moderate incomes. Policies that promote these types of environments will help create and sustain healthy and inclusive neighborhoods.

Inläckage i spillvattenledningar i Rengsjö : En utredning baserad på ammoniummetoden

Thor, Elin January 2016 (has links)
This study aims to locate the intrusion of excess water in the sewage networks, analyzing the concentration of ammonium in the flow that is obtained from the wells in the network. The foundation for the work is the author’s previous attempts to investigate stormwater at the VA-company Helsinge Vatten AB. The analysis is carried out by using a portable spectrophotometer with such reagents that can measure ammonium concentration in just 15 minutes. This gives an indication of how diluted effluent is. If  it is diluted by excess water the analysis shows a low value which is indicating intrusion of possibly surface water, groundwater or drinking water. This method is developed by Norrköping vatten och avfall, who have been a major reference of this report, with their study “Minskning av in- och utläckage genom aktiv läcksökning”(Uusijärvi, 2013).  Results from the ammonium analyses have been presented with associated charts. Because the sewage networks often are associated with pumping stations and wastewater treatment plants, which effect the electricity consumption, the electricity consumption has been documented for the pump stations in the area of study. The electricity consumption increases when the pumps are working. A analysis has been made by comparing the electricity consumption and the precipitation to see if the sewage network is influenced by precipitation.  In order to obtain an estimated amount of excess water intrusion, a calculation have been made by using a template produced by Norrköping Vatten och Avfall. In the calculation, values indicating water intrusion along with the number of subscribers, management and those who discharge most wastewater have been used. Together it gives a result of estimated intrusion in liters per day and meter network (L/D/M).  In the report, three areas located in the village Rengsjö have been investigated by using this method. The first area where the outcome was not as desired, but very instructive for the staff. The second area gave results that show the good quality of the net with a comparison of dry and wet weather. And also an area where a likely intrusion is detected and will be investigated further during the summer. This finding can indicate large amounts of stormwater. Those findings compiles with parts of the objectives formulated in the report, to find the intrusion and to plan for further investigation. Together with the results for each area, include an extensive discussion in which all aspects that influence the measured analyses have been taken up.  The report shows that the ammonium method  has been proved to be successful in identifying excess water intrusion in Helsinge Vatten’s sewage networks. This method does not rely on many resources, and therefore it is suitable for companies that wish investigate excess water instruction in a cost-effective way.

Genealogy and migration of the Va Ka Valoyi people of Limpopo Province, South Africa

Mathebula, Mandla Darnece January 2018 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D. (History)) -- University of Limpopo, 2018 / The purpose of this study was to investigate the genealogy and migration of the va ka Valoyi people of Limpopo Province, South Africa. Qualitative, narrative research was used to study the oral history of the va ka Valoyi to determine the origin, migration routes and the genealogy of the 20 (twenty) communities of the va ka Valoyi in Limpopo. Data collection was done using semi-structured questionnaires. An initial list of 20 (twenty) respondents was drawn and through Snowball Sampling, the list was increased as per referrals made by the 20 (twenty) respondents during their individual interviews. At the end of the research, 67 (sixty-seven) respondents had been interviewed and secondary sources also consulted. The study has reconstructed the history of the va ka Valoyi, which had not been written before and managed to fill some gaps in the history of their associate groups that historians had not been able to fill in the past. The findings revealed that all the 20 (twenty) communities of the va ka Valoyi in Limpopo are related and identified the various relationships among them. It also revealed how the va ka Valoyi are related to ancient dynasties of the Munhumutapa, Changamire and Torwa and how they reached the Limpopo Province. KEY CONCEPTS Genealogy; Migration; va ka Valoyi; Arrival in Limpopo Province; Oral history.

RELATIONAL AESTHETICS: CREATIVITY IN THE INTER-HUMAN SPHERE

Patow, Carl 01 January 2019 (has links)
RELATIONAL AESTHETICS: CREATIVITY IN THE INTER-HUMAN SPHERE By Carl Patow, MD, MPH, MBA A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Art at Virginia Commonwealth University, 2019. Major Director: Pamela Taylor Turner, Associate Professor, Kinetic Imaging, VCU Arts Relational Art was first described as an art movement in Nicolas Bourriaud’s catalogue for the exhibition Traffic in 1995, and in an eponymous book in 1998. He observed that contemporary artists were shifting the focus of their work away from creating objects of spectacle to interaction with viewers through dialogue. Examination of a sample of representative artists’ work demonstrates a wide variety of applications that variously include objects. Inclusion of objects in relational artwork raises important theoretic considerations about the definition of the genre and its application to specific artworks. In the thesis artwork, WORKS WHEN, Carl Patow engages individuals in Richmond, Virginia, in conversations, documenting the location of their neighborhood and recording observations they make about their neighborhoods on polychrome tiles. The collected tiles are formed into “communities” on a floor map of the city. The work includes both conversation and objects in its creation, realization and exhibition. In doing so, WORKS WHEN is both an example of Relational Aesthetics and an expansion of its scope as a genre.

Nicolas-Jilwan, Fadia 01 February 2012 (has links) (PDF)
