Os verbos inacusativos e a inversão do sujeito em sentenças declarativas do português brasileiro

Ferreira, Ivana Kátia de Souza January 2011 (has links)
This academic work deals with the unaccusative verbs and the free inversion of the subject in declarative sentences in Brazilian Portuguese (BP). This study is based on a bibliographic review, in the light of the Generative Syntax, under the Government-Binding (GB) Theory. It is proposed by Chomsky (1981), in accordance with the Principles and Parameters model. Firstly, a summary of the fundamental topics (Lexicon, Verb Subcategorization, Case Theory, θ-Theory, Argument Structure) within the GB is made, not to mention that these topics are absolutely related to the main subject. Thereafter, the unaccusative verbs (monoargumental) and their particularity are presented. A comparison is made between the unaccusative and the inergative verbs. Although they are both monoargumental verbs, they have different syntactic structures from each other. Their Dstructures show such differences. The unaccusative verbs subcategorize a Determiner Phrase (DP) complement (in the object place), while the inergative ones select an external argument. When the inversion of the DP subject occurs, it remains in its original position within the Verb Phrase (VP). According to relevant authors (Pontes, 1986; Kato, 2000; Menuzzi, 2003) to this work, the unaccusative verbs are compatible with the V(erb)S(ubject) order in BP. The occurance of two kinds of agreement is verified in the sentences when the DP subject occupies the post-verbal position. When the verb agrees with the post-verbal DP subject ([pro] Chegaram as visitas), the agreement results from a chain between the post-verbal DP subject and the null expletive pro. When the verb remains in the 3rd person of singular ([pro] Chegou as visitas), it reveals that the agreement is with the pre-verbal null expletive pro, singular according to Mioto et al. (2007). The agreement with the pre-verbal expletive is likewise in French. However in French the pre-verbal expletive is not null; it is the lexical one il.

This research is developed within the Thematic Observatory and Laboratory - Education, Technology, Science and Information (OtletCI) with the intention to move forward on the question of how to extract relevant information and how to represent it for purposes of semantic retrieval of information, particularly in the case of texts of scientific publications in Portuguese. Therefore, as a methodology, we investigated the semantic search technology based on the theoretical foundations, its usefulness in the context of OtletCI and requirements for application in scientific texts in Portuguese. As an experiment, we tried to clarify the semantic search requirements for the application of scientific texts by analyzing the extraction of semantic relationships such as "cause and effect" in 60 abstracts, in Portuguese, of scientific articles in the area of Agricultural Sciences. The study shows, through qualitative and quantitative considerations, a comparison between manual and automatic extraction process of cause and effect sentences. These documents were previously analyzed manually, and the sentences of cause and effect were extracted by reading the summaries. For automatic process, with data transferred from PALAVRAS software to the Excel spreadsheet, it was possible to carry out a program to find cause and effect sentences automatically. The goal was to buy the sentences identified directly by the researcher and sentences automatically reconstructed from the set of programmed cells. The research concludes emphasizing that the possibility of using automatic techniques accelerates the process of creating and extracting of cause and effect relationship and may be used as an alternative to costly manual process of identifying semantic information. However, more important than to propose a structure of cause and effect relationships for building search engines, we can point out as the most significant result of this research the preliminary establishment of routines for automated version.

Aspectos sintáticos do infinitivo com verbos causativos no Português Europeu = um abordagem diacrônica / Syntactic aspects of infinitive with causative verbs in the European Portuguese : a diachronic approach

Trannin, Juliana 17 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Charlotte Marie Chambelland Galves / Dissertação (mestrado } - Universidade Estadual de de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos e Linguagem / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-17T13:36:42Z (GMT). A mudança nas construções causativas, portanto, parece se localizar no século XVII / Abstract: This work aims to analyse the infinitival complement selected by causative verbs in the history of European Portuguese. In Portuguese, causative verbs can occur in three constructions - complex predicates (fazer-infinitivo and fazer-por), ECM and inflected infinitive structures - which present different properties with respect to casual marking, position of the subordinated infinitive subject and clitic climbing. The goals of this research are to describe and to analyze the syntactic properties of causative constructions in Classical Portuguese (ClP) and Modern European Portuguese (EP) grammars, and to study the diachronic variation of these constructions in order to identify a possible change and compare it to other earlier results of EP. The analyses are based on generative grammar, specifically the Principles and Parameters theory and the syntactic change theory. The data were collected from 26 texts written by Portuguese authors born between the 16th and 19th centuries. The sentences were classified and quantified according to three aspects: type of construction, type of causative verb and transitivity of the subordinated verb. The results reveal that both the causative verb mandar and the fazer-por construction predominated in the 16th and 17th centuries, whereas both the causative verb fazer and the fazer-infinitivo construction predominated in the following centuries. The frequency of the ECM construction remains relatively stable in the course of time and it occurs preferentially with the causative verb deixar. The data shows a decrease of the dative forms of causee, related to the reduction of the occurrence of transitive verb in the infinitive complements and to the loss of the prepositioned accusative. In addition, there is a decrease of the insertion of lexical material inside verbal complexes, which denotes a higher adjacency tendency between verbs from the 17th century on. The change in the causative constructions, therefore, is likely to have happened during the 17th century / Mestrado / Linguistica / Mestre em Linguística

Modality and Method: A Comparison of Russian and English Epistemic Modal Verbs through SFL and its Implications for Second Language Learners.

Batluk, Liilia January 2012 (has links)
This study is intended to shed light on similarities and differences in terms of functional structure of the clause when modality is expressed by use of modal operators in Russian and English, in order to arrive at findings which inform, and are applicable to, the process of English language acquisition by the Russian learner. The need for the investigation was prompted by the author’s work experience in the field of English teaching, and the lack of explicit guidance in available textbooks currently used in Russian schools and institutions with regard to the particular issue highlighted. While learning the subject of Systemic Functional Linguistics, I drew parallels between the functional structures in the two languages, the purpose of which is to provide a roadmap which facilitates the learning and teaching of English modality to the Russian learner. The approach of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), focusing on the metafunctions as the correspondence in the sociolinguistic message of the clause, is used as a basis for comparing the functional structures in both languages. The investigation of functional grammar features is carried out in order to spotlight  both the similarities and the differences inherent in expressing a degree of probability of an event or statement indicated, not only by the choice of an appropriate modal verb, but also its placement within the clause. The role of the social context in which the text is set is noted as significant for delivering the precise meaning of the message. Hence, the proposition will be pursued through further investigation in the field of modality, and viewed from perspectives of sociolinguistics.

Gramática tanimuka, una lengua de la Amazonía colombiana / Grammaire de la langue tanimuka, Amazonie colombienne / Grammar of the Tanimuka language, Colombian Amazon

Eraso, Natalia 27 May 2015 (has links)
This grammar of Tanimuka, a Tucanoan language of the Colombian Amazonian area, is organized in four parts. The first part, ‘Tanimuka : the language and its speakers’, is divided into three chapters (1 to 3), which establish the sociolinguistic profile of the language and describe the fieldwork conditions. The second part, divided into two chapters (5 and 6), presents a description of the phonology and morphophonology of the language, with a study of the phenomenon of syllabic epenthesis in the verb. The third part (chapters 7 and 8) begins with a general study of the morphosyntactic and syntactic levels, followed by an in-depth study of the noun classification systems: gender and numeral classifier. The fourth part (chapters 9 to 11) focuses on the expression of space, omnipresent in the language. The first chapter presents an inventory of all the elements that express the domain of space in the language. The second provides a detailed analysis of postures and positional verbs in basic locative construction of simple or complex predicates (serial verb constructions). The final chapter is dedicated to the study of the expression of the Trajectory category. The dissertation ends with three annexes, which present, in turn, the visual stimuli created for the investigation of locative verbs of posture and position, a study of the traditional system of numeration and the transcription of a history of oral tradition: 'The tortoise Parekika', glossed and translated.

Description morpho-syntaxique du nââ numèè (langue de l'extrême-Sud, Nouvelle-Calédonie)

Wacalie, Fabrice Saiqë 08 November 2013 (has links)
This thesis deals with the morpho-syntactic description of Nââ Numèè, a language of the far south of New Caledonia, spoken by fewer than 1,000 speakers in the tribes of Touaourou and Goro in the town of Yate and the isle Ouen in the town of Mont-Dore.In the first part, the author explains the social facts which led to the great southern region being one of the most affected by traditional wars, colonization, evangelization, the construction of the dam at Yate and more recently, mining. In the second part, the author will identify the phonemes of the language. Then a comparison will be made between the consonant, vowel and tonal system thus established and made by Rivierre in the 1970s. This gap analysis allows the author to highlight the phonological changes in the language over almost forty years. The author then uses the traditional "distributional" method to define the different morphemes of language before proposing a categorization of lexemes. In the third part, the author deals with morphological processes used in derivation and in composition. In this chapter, it is interesting to see the increased use of verbal classifiers. In the fourth section dealing with syntax, the author offers a description of the nominal phrase with the modes and types of determination. This part also includes a presentation of the nominal substitutes, deictic and numeral systems. Then, the author describes the verbal phrase with special focus on the analysis of the aspect and temporal markers and serial verbs. In the part dedicated to the circonstants, the author focuses on the orientation system developed and the various repositories spaces used (absolute and relative). In the last part, the author exposes the different types of clauses (simple, complex and marked).

Analýza profilů chování iterativních sloves v latině / Analysis of Behavioural Profiles of Iterative Verbs in Latin

Hrach, Petr January 2016 (has links)
This thesis deals with the group of Latin iterative verbs, i.e. the group that is formally marked with the iterative suffix -t. It deals with the question what was the actual meaning of the iterative suffix -t in classical Latin as reference literature says that in some cases the meaning of iterative verbs in classical Latin was the same as that of the base verb and there are iterative verbs whose base verbs are not attested at all. Also, only iterative verbs often passed into Romance languages. Another question this thesis deals with is the relationship of iterative verbs as a group set off on the basis of the category of aktionsart as it is understood in the Czech linguistic tradition and the categories that are generally referred to as aspect (grammatical aspect, lexical aspect). In this case, the selected method is a corpus-based quantitative method called the "behavioural profiles". In our case, the corpus is limited to selected prosaic works of the classical Latin period of approximately the 1st century b.C. to the 1st century AD. In its first part, the analysis is based on studying the occurrences of selected iterative verb - base verb pairs in the above mentioned corpus, especially focused on the frequency of occurrence, valence and classification of predicates into Vendler's classes,...

The German Proficiency Exam at Brigham Young University: A Validation Study

Starr, Tina Grahovac 05 July 2008 (has links)
In order to continuously improve teaching and learning of a language program, it is a crucial part of program evaluation to assure that its assessment instruments have a beneficial influence on the teaching and learning procedures. For that reason, evidence was gathered to investigate the validity of test scores of the German Proficiency Exam (GPE) used by the German Section of the Germanic and Slavic Languages Department at Brigham Young University. The GPE consists of seven exam components: Listening comprehension, reading, writing, speaking, grammar, vocabulary, and strong verbs. The GPE component scores of 179 students were used to conduct the analysis for this study. In order to estimate the reliability of the test scores, Cronbach's Alpha was calculated for the listening comprehension exam, the reading exam, the grammar exam, the strong verbs exam, and the vocabulary exam. In addition, the analysis included overall descriptive statistics, item facility and item discrimination, distractor analysis, ANOVA, and a post-hoc Tukey's pairwise comparison. The results of the Cronbach's alpha indicated relatively high reliability of scores of all the exam components except the listening component. The item and distractor analysis of the strong verbs and vocabulary exam revealed that the scoring procedures need to be revised so that the scores reflect a student's true knowledge. The descriptive statistics of the exams showed a limited usage of the scoring range and suggest defining the scoring procedures and training the scorers. Further, it was suggested to define general language construct and the specific construct of each language skill on the basis of which proficiency levels can be developed. Using the results of the data analysis. various suggestions were given to improve the validity of scores of the GPE.

Figurative Verben in der allgemeinen Wissenschaftssprache des Deutschen: eine Korpusstudie

Meißner, Cordula 28 November 2016 (has links)
Verbs like ‘ausgehen von’, ‘beziehen auf’ or ‘darstellen’ that contain semantically concrete basic verbs (gehen, ziehen, stellen) form an essential part of German general academic vocabulary, i.e. vocabulary that is used across disciplines. Adopting a corpus linguistic approach, the study develops a comprehensive description of these ‚figurative verbs‘. Based on a data-driven methodology it investigates the properties of this lexis and shows that figurative verbs containing typical recurring forms like -stellen, -führen, -gehen and others are highly relevant from a quantitative point of view. On the basis of the most prominently recurring formal parts, a core inventory of verbs is collected and described with respect to the areas of meaning expressed as well as regarding aspects of polysemy. Based on the empirical study, a model for the identification and description of vocabulary is developed, that integrates the hitherto separated quantitative - inventory based and meaning oriented - unit based perspectives. Moreover, it brings together aspects regarding form and function as means of structuring the vocabulary under description. Methodically, the model builds on a combination of the corpus-driven and the corpus-based approach. The model is elaborated as follows: In Chapter 1, important aspects of description that the model should meet are identified based on a survey of existing work on general academic language. Chapter 2 provides a linguistic foundation within the framework of usage-based language description. In particular, it draws on Langacker’s Cognitive Grammar, from which the concepts of linguistic unit and construal are adopted. Chapters 3 and 4 present the corpus linguistic investigations on figurative verbs. In Chapter 5, the empirical results are brought together in a form- as well as function-based typology of figurative verbs. Chapter 6 synthesizes the findings into a model and shows possibilities of application of the proposed approach to other areas of general academic vocabulary. Finally, Chapter 7 summarizes the results from the perspective of language pedagogy and outlines a proposal for the teaching of general academic vocabulary.
