Verben zum Ausdruck einer allgemeinen Fortbewegung im Altgriechischen: Eine integrative Analyse von räumlicher und zeitlicher Dimension

Spano, Marianna 31 July 2017 (has links)
In this work are regarded those motion verbs in Ancient Greek that are used to express a general motion. Those verbs can be glossified by 'come' and 'go', and within certain contexts, deictic uses of these verbs are evident in many languages. The analysis includes two main corpora of different epochs, the comedy of Aristophanes (5th century B.C.) and the New Testament (1st century A.C.). For a better illustration of diachronic changes, quantitative and partially also qualitative data about further, earlier or later authors are described and regarded. Basing on the existing typology for deictic motion verbs in spoken languages, this study identifies those criteria and contexts that can be applied onto a dead language as well. As a difference to the existing typology and to the prevalent approach on these verbs – which is limited to the spatial dimension of deixis –, in this study also the temporal dimension of the verbally expressed motion is integrated. Based on the analysis presented here, it is to be noted that the diachronic changes in the criteria for the application of motion verbs in Ancient Greek can be traced back to the relation of the verbal categories that concur for the expression or precising of the plot's temporal dimension. i.e. the aspect and the Aktionsart. The results of this work give evidence, that the integration of the domains 'space' and 'time' gives reason for the use of these verbs in ancient Greek within a diachronic perspective, and show that this methodological approach is worth to be applied to the analysis of other languages.

The main objective of this research is to ascertain which aspects of Frame Semantics (Fillmore, 1982; 1985) and the model called Wheel of Emotions (Scherer, 2005) contribute to the relationship between language and the phenomenon of emotion, in regards to the Portuguese and Spanish languages. Frame Semantics -a theoretical construct linked to cognitive linguistics- underlies the syntactic and semantic analysis by means of an exploratory study of the FrameNet database (Fillmore et al., 2003). Based on this theoretical framework, we conducted a survey of the frames and frame elements that describe emotions, attaching semantic and syntactic categories to them. We also contemplated the possibility of mapping the holder and the subject of opinion in the corpus of sentences from Twitter. The second theoretical perspective is related to cognitive psychology through the Wheel of Emotions. Considering the semantic aspects offered by this tool, it is observed to what extent –including computer applications- it enriches the study of Sentiment Analysis. The Wheel of Emotions helps to identify the polarity of opinions contained in the sample sentences. The results show that the two perspectives prove productive for computer applications in Sentiment Analysis.

[en] THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN VERBS OF MOVEMENT AND THEIR LOCATIVE COMPLEMENTS OF ORIGEN AND GOAL ACCORDING TO THE VALENCY GRAMMAR APROACH / [pt] AS RELAÇÕES ENTRE VERBOS DE MOVIMENTO E COMPLEMENTOS LOCATIVOS DE ORIGEM E META COM ENFOQUE DA GRAMÁTICA DE VALÊNCIAS

ANA LUCIA DE ANDRADE MARQUES 27 May 2003 (has links)
[en] In the description of the Brazilian Portuguese, the valency of verbs of movement opens four spaces which are fullfilled by adverbial expressions considered locatives of origen and goal. These expressions present peculiarities regarding the realization in utterances. Based on the proposals of the valency grammar, an analysis of qualitative aspect was provided aiming to examine the possibility of realization of each argument mentioned and the motivations and results generated in their relationship with the verbs on which they depend. The locatives that indicate goal and complement the fourth space of the verbs of movement / direction occur more often when these verbs infer location transferance. This dissertation considers the value of prepositions that accompany the complements and the adverbs that indicate the deitic space.

Problémy při překládání konstrukcí s modálními slovesy z němčiny do češtiny / Some problems in translating modal verbs structures from German to Czech

Kratochvílová, Jana January 2012 (has links)
The subject matter of this diploma thesis is linguistic modality in German with focus on certain problems in translating modal verbs structures from German to Czech. In the theoretical part, the concept of modality as well as the differentiation of modal field is elucidated. Besides the usually used classification of subjective and objective modality, a more precise structure is applied, which is that of epistemic and non-epistemic modality. In addition, in the field of non-epistemic modality, two other sub-types are distinguished according to whether a speaker s evaluation is present or not. The practical part methodologically relies on concrete data such as modal verbs used with perfect infinitive or modal verbs in past perfect tense (Plusquamperfekt) and their translations from German to Czech. Based on selected examples, the aim of this thesis is to emphasize the main differences between Czech and German modality and to underline their essential significance to the translation accuracy.

O uso dos verbos modais em manuais de aviação em inglês : um estudo baseado em corpus

Sarmento, Simone January 2008 (has links)
This thesis is about the use of modal verbs in aviation manuals in the light of corpus linguistics. The goal is to gather subsides to enable the creation of classroom material which presents the linguistic structures as they appear in their natural context. The hypothesis is that the use of modal verbs in the corpus has peculiarities in terms of frequency, syntactic patterns, and meanings. The aviation corpus is composed of three manuals from the BOEING 737 aircraft: two operations manuals directed to pilots and one maintenance manual directed to mechanics. The research has been carried out in three stages. In the first stage, the aviation corpus is contrasted to a reference corpus and another specialized corpus composed of personal computer operational systems. Such contrast aims at verifying the differences in the number of modal tokens and their syntactic patterns. In the second stage, the three manuals that make up the aviation corpus are compared in terms of modal frequencies and their syntactic patterns. In the third stage, the main collocations of each modal are checked. This thesis also aims at contrasting the maintenance manual and a course book designed to teach aviation English to mechanics. Thus, an analysis of the modal verbs in the course book is carried out and changes to the book are suggested. This thesis brings together theoretical assumptions from Corpus Linguistics, the Linguistics of Specialized languages and Modal Verbs. The results point out that there are differences in the use of modal verbs in the three investigated corpora and mainly among the three manuals that compose the aviation corpus. This study shows the importance of corpus based research to reveal the peculiarities of a specialized language and, therefore, provide input to produce specific pedagogical material which better meets the needs of the target public.

Les phrasal verbs : usage, acquisition (L1 & L2), et enseignement / Phrasal verbs : usage, L1 & L2 acquisition, and teaching

Riguel, Emilie 01 December 2016 (has links)
Although typical and inevitable in the English language, phrasal verbs, however, represent a real scourge to non-English-speaking students. A quantitative study based on a comparison between an interlanguage corpus of English as a foreign language (International Corpus of Learner English, Version 2) and a control corpus (Louvain Corpus of Native English Essays) thus highlights the underrepresentation of phrasal verbs in non-English-speaking students’ written productions. Secondly, from a qualitative study examining the use of phrasal verbs in excerpts from non-native students’ essays, we draw up a typology of errors made by non-English-speaking learners with regard to phrasal verbs. A discussion on new approaches to a better learning/teaching of phrasal verbs is also proposed. To provide some answers to this question, our approach consists in observing the genesis of this construction in the English-speaking child’s language. Indeed, the role of multiword constructions has particularly been emphasized in theories of first language acquisition (Goldberg, 1995; Tomasello, 2003). Besides, they are a rich and productive source of predication that children from most of the language communities acquire at a very early age. Yet, no studies dedicated to the acquisition and usage of verb-particle constructions in young English-speaking children have been carried out so far. This thesis aims to study the emergence and development of verb-particle constructions in child language by analyzing longitudinal data from the spontaneous oral speech of two monolingual English-speaking children, Naima and Ella, respectively followed between ages 0;11 and 3;10 and between ages 1;00 and 4;00. The corpora transcripts come from the CHILDES database (MacWhinney, 2000a).Finally, this thesis also focuses on the acquisition and use of particle placement within direct transitive phrasal verbs in English-speaking children’s speech. In particular, a multifactorial analysis of several linguistic variables will be conducted to see if children reproduce the same linguistic pattern as adults in their productions of both types of direct transitive verb-particle constructions (i.e. continuous configuration V-Prt-O and split configuration V-O-Prt).

比較HAPPEN與其同義字: 以母語及學習者語料庫為基礎的非賓格存現動詞之研究 / Comparing unaccusative HAPPEN and its synonyms: a study of existence/appearance verbs based on native speaker and learner corpora

王亮鈞, Wang, Liang Chun Unknown Date (has links)
Owing to the necessity to identify unaccusative existence/appearance verbs and realize how they are acquired by L2 learners, this present thesis aims to analyze a highly frequent English unaccusative verb HAPPEN and compare it with its three other synonyms (OCCUR, APPEAR, and EXIST), as well as its Chinese counterpart發生 fāshēn ‘happen.’ Native speaker corpora (the British National Corpus (BNC) for English and Chinese Gigaword 2 Corpus (GW 2.0) for the Chinese), and L2 learner corpora (the Language Training and Testing Learner Corpus (the LTTC), International Corpus of Learner English 2.0 (the ICLE), and the National Chengchi University Foreign Language Learner Corpus (the NCCU)) are utilized to analyze the unaccusative verbs in the first main section. In addition, in order to discover the relationship between L2 English errors and L1 Chinese transfer, psycholinguistic experiments (two acceptability judgments tasks with comparable Chinese and English HAPPEN sentence constructions) based on the corpora data were conducted in this thesis. The results in this thesis showed that, first, the highly frequent grammatical forms of unaccusative verbs (e.g., happened or happen) in the English native speaker corpus share some similarities with those of L2 learner corpora. However, these grammatical forms were usually misused by L2 learners and were frequently collocated with the two common unaccusative errors (overpassivization, e.g., *What is happened? and trasitivization, e.g., *I happen a car accident.). Second, as for the distributions of unaccusative error types, HAPPEN and OCCUR were found to mainly co-occur with overpassivization errors, whereas APPEAR and EXIST were found to mainly co-occur with transitivization errors. This indicates that each unaccusative verb may have different potential for L2 unaccusative errors, and therefore the causes of these errors with different verbs may vary. Third, from the analysis of psycholinguistic experiments, we discover that the L1 Chinese grammatical patterns, such as the V-le grammatical pattern (e.g., 出現了chūxiànle ‘appear-le’) and the V+N grammatical pattern (e.g., 發生車禍fāshēngchēhuò ‘The car accident happened’, 發生戰爭 fāshēngzhànzhēng ‘The war occurred’, and存在缺失 cúnzàiquēshī ‘The pitfalls existed’) may influence L2 learners’ correct judgment as to the grammatical forms of unaccusative verbs. This reveals that generally L1 Chinese might have some interference with L2 unaccusative acquisition. Based on the results, we proposed that the perfectivity and transitivity differences between English and Chinese unaccusative existence/appearance verbs could distinguish the uses among the English HAPPEN and the Chinese發生 fāshēn ‘happen’ with their synonyms. These differences could also provide a possible reason for the cause of the problematic L2 unaccusative acquisition. This thesis overcomes the difficulties of comparing unaccusative existence/appearance verbs in the previous studies and attempts to unravel the enigma of acquiring this verb type from the integrated corpus-based and empirical findings. These findings in turn serve as the suggested assumptions to interpret unaccusative verbs, which can be applied to the design of language teaching materials or can be viewed as the basis of cross-language analysis in the future studies.

Förstaspråksattrition hos vuxna : Exemplet polsktalande i Sverige / Adult First Language Attrition : The Case of Polish Speakers in Sweden

Lubińska, Dorota January 2011 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with adult L1 attrition in the case of highly-educated long-term Polish immigrants in Sweden. The study sheds light on two classical issues pertaining to L1 attrition, namely what happens to a fully developed mature language system in an immigrant context, and why it happens. Specifically we aim to answer the following questions: (1) Are Polish speakers in Sweden different from comparable individuals in Poland with respect to (i) judgement and use of a number of Polish linguistic features (se keywords below), and (ii) hesitation phenomena, i.e. ability to be quick and easy and linguistic insecurity? (2) Is the variation in linguistic results dependent on how often and in what context the Polish language is used and/or which attitudes the individuals have towards it as well as how long they have been living in Sweden? One of the main contributions of the study regards methodology. The data is analysed in three steps: an initial focus on group comparisons shifts to the analysis of individual results in relation to the variation observed in the comparison group, and finally to a holistic view of the attrition effects or their absence. It is suggested that in studies on adult L1 attrition, where the effects are expected to be relatively cosmetic, the range of the linguistic behaviour in the comparison group as a reference point as well as a holistic perspective on individual results gives a more truthful picture of the attrition process. In addition the study shows that attrition effects are present in some individuals (60 %) to a different degree. The most common effect overall is linguistic insecurity followed by the overuse of 1st person pronouns as explicit subjects and to a lesser degree by the overuse of 3rd person pronouns. Surprisingly there is a scanty effect on the other hesitation phenomenon, i.e. the ability to be quick and easy. No or limited effects are observed in other structural areas which basically supports previous findings on L1 adult attrition. Finally, the presence versus absence of the attrition effect can not be straightforwardly related either to language use, attitudes or length of residence, with one exception being linguistic insecurity.

Représentation OWL de la ressource lexicale LVF et son utilisation dans le traitement automatique de la langue

Abdi, Radia 09 1900 (has links)
The LVF dictionary (Les Verbes Français) by J. Dubois and F. Dubois-Charlier is one of the most important lexical resources in the French language, which is characterized by a highly relevant semantic and syntactic description. The LVF has been available in an XML format to make access to information more convenient for computer applications such as NLP applications for French language. With the emergence of the Semantic Web and the rapid diffusion of its technologies and standards such as XML, RDF/RDFS and OWL, it would be interesting to represent LVF in a more formalized format for a better and more sophisticated usage by natural language processing and semantic web applications. We present in this paper an OWL ontology version of LVF by demonstrating the mapping process between the data model elements of the XML version and OWL. We give account about its use in the field of natural language processing by presenting an application of semantic annotation developed in GATE.

Μορφοσυντακτική ανάλυση των ρημάτων ψυχικού πάθους της νέας ελληνικής / Morphosyntactic analysis of the psych verbs in modern Greek

Καλαμίδα, Αντιγόνη 04 May 2011 (has links)
The purpose of the present study is to provide an analysis of the psych verbs in Modern Greek which is based on two significant factors: a) the syntactic realization of the arguments of the predicate and b) the voice morphology of the verb. More specifically, I am examining a particular category of the Greek psych verbs: the category that involves at the same time an alternation between two syntactic structures, the Object Experiencer and the Subject Experiencer structures and an alternation between the active and the mediopassive voice morphology. The basic question which I will try to answer is whether the Subject Experiencer structures with the mediopassive voice morphology on the verb are the passivized forms of the corresponding Object Experiencer structures with the active voice morphology on the verb. First of all, in the first chapter I am discussing the linking problem between thematic roles and syntactic positions that the psych verbs generally pose, as well as the way in which this problem is manifested by the Greek psych verbs in particular. In this context, I claim that a very important factor that has to be investigated is the voice morphology of the verb. Moreover, in chapter 2, that is the theoretical background of the present study, I am presenting a) the most important syntactic analyses that have been proposed for the explanation of the behavior of these verbs and b) the properties and interpretations of the mediopassive voice morphology of the verb in Modern Greek that is a very significant factor for the study of these verbs. In chapter 3 I am expanding the categorization of the psych verbs that has been proposed, on the basis of the syntactic projection of the arguments of the predicate and the voice morphology of these verbs and I am discussing the syntactic behavior of each category. In chapter 4 I am examining in deep a specific category of psych verbs in Modern Greek which presents the following behavior: these verbs can involve the alternation between the Object Experiencer and the Subject Experiencer syntactic structures, which is combined with an alternation in the voice morphology of the verb. To begin with, I am examining the possibility of syntactic passivization of Object Experiencer verbs and then, I am investigating the interpretation of Subject Experiencer structures with a verb that has the mediopassive morphology. The conclusion to which I am reaching is that a Subject Experiencer structure with a verb that has the mediopassive morphology can have a) the passive structure and interpretation, and in this case the structure is derived by the corresponding Object Experiencer active structure, b) the middle structure and interpretation, when the agent is omitted and, c) the reflexive structure and interpretation when the prepositional phrase that is present in it expresses the cause. The aforementioned depends on the position in which the mediopassive morpheme is derived in the Deep Structure, on the presence or not of an adjunct and on the nature of this adjunct. In chapter 5 I am summarizing the whole study and providing a synopsis of the main conclusions of the analysis that was depicted in the fourth chapter.
