The all-seeing mirror: reflecting on vampires as allegories in socio-culturally sensitive literary works / The all-seeing mirror: reflecting on vampires as allegories in socio-culturally sensitive literary works

Thiago Silva Sardenberg 19 December 2012 (has links)
The present work aims at looking at the figure of the vampire in literature as powerful means of reading and interpreting the fears and anxieties of a specific socio-cultural space. By looking at the evolution of the literary vampire through the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries, we are able to notice that each of its incarnations dramatically differs from the previous one, and as vampires are reinvented, they engage in a coherent dialog with issues pertaining to their times, in a way that they never lose their relevance. Their heterogeneous existence, explicited in the dissertation primarily through Sheridan LeFanus Carmilla, Bram Stokers Dracula, Richard Mathesons I am Legend, Anne Rices Interview with the Vampire and Octavia Butlers Fledgling, and the different theoretical questions brought on by each of them such as sexuality, alterity and hybridity will lead us to the understanding that the vampire may potentially function as a powerful allegory as it becomes a mirror of the very humanity on which its life depends

Profilaxia e controle da raiva dos herbívoros domésticos no Estado de São Paulo, Sudeste do Brasil, no período de 1997 - 2007 / Prophylaxis and control of paralytic rabies of the domestic herbivores in the State of São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil, period of 1997-2007

Nilton Fidalgo Peres 27 January 2009 (has links)
In the State of São Paulo, the Coordenadoria de Defesa Agropecuária-CDA, an administrative unit directly subordinated to the State Secretary of Agriculture was established in 1998. Subsequently, the frequent outbreaks of paralytic rabies in herbivores in Eastern part of the State, including the region of Vale do Paraiba and the Greater São Paulo, between 1999 and 2001, have led to change the strategies for controlling the disease being conducted up to that time in the State. In 2001, the vaccination of domestic herbivores was declared obligatory in regions under the jurisdiction of Escritórios de Defesa Agropecuária - EDAs located in areas classified as rabies epidemic and endemic, and by the reinforcement of the control measures directed against the Desmodus rotundus vampire bats by means of joint effort of EDAs to capture and control the bats using mist nets and the vampiricides (anticoagulant paste), besides the registration, revision and the use of geographical information systems to locate the bats roosts and shelters in strategic regions, in order to interrupt the progression of the disease through the reduction of the bat population density and the viral circulation. In this study, it was considered the number of rabies in herbivores with laboratorial confirmation and according to the year of occurrence, animal species, and distributed by EDAs and by municipalities, provided by the Pasteur Institute-São Paulo. Data regarding 2001, the percentages of vaccination were grouped without the division into EDAs, due to the absence of data. From 2002, the data were divided into EDAs where vaccination has been declared obligatory, and data discriminated into properties that vaccinated and herbivores vaccinated against rabies. The number of captured vampire bats was provided by the respective EDAs. By analyzing the trends indicated by the properties that vaccinated against rabies and the herbivores vaccinated and the amount of vampire bats captured, it was observed a decrease in rabies cases in 90% or more, and with these results we conclude that for the control of rabies in herbivores, the easures adopted must be focused primarily in vaccinating the target animal species and in a well planned and organized measures of control directed to the main reservoirs, i.e., the Desmodus rotundus bats.

Shadow and Voice: The Vampire's Debt to Secular Modernity

Maynard, Luke R. J. 18 December 2013 (has links)
The past few years have seen a renewed critical interest in the vampires and vampirism of English literature, owing both to their growing influence in popular culture and a more inclusive reordering of the literary canon. Much of this recent work has typically approached vampirism through a psychoanalytic lens inherited from Gothic criticism, characterized by a dependence on Freud, Lacan, and Foucault, and often by a model of crisis in which these supernatural figures of terror are supposed to symbolize cultural anxieties with varying degrees of historicity. This dissertation builds upon the narrative of secularization set out in Charles Taylor’s recent work, A Secular Age, to answer the need for a new and alternative narrative of what function the vampire serves within English literature, and how it came to prominence there. The literary history of vampirism is reconsidered in light of the new sociological observations made by Taylor, hinging upon two key methodological principles: first, that Taylor’s new secularization narrative has the potential to reshape the way we think of literature in general and our literary relationship to the supernatural in particular; and second, that the fiction generated during this period of upheaval has much more to tell us about secularization, broadening our understanding of the ideological shifts and changing relationships to the supernatural that brought forth this uniquely modern monster in literature. / Graduate / 0593 / 0318 / 0358 / glukemaynard@gmail.com

From ‘logging capital’ to ‘tourism phenomenon’ : the impact of literary tourism on Forks, WA., United States of America

Herselman, Charlene January 2014 (has links)
Literary tourism refers to any travel inspired by literature. This dissertation considers literary tourism from the perspective of a contemporary literary tourism attraction. It investigates the origins of literary tourism both in the historical context as well as in academic writing as interdisciplinary research between geography and literature. The current state of literary tourism research is also considered and the main research themes at present are identified, that is, authenticity and who the literary tourists are. This study also considers what the future might hold for literary tourism by looking at popular contemporary examples, including the works of J.K. Rowling, G.R.R. Martin, J.R.R. Tolkien, Dan Brown, Stieg Larsson and L.J. Smith. In this context, literary tourism’s reciprocal relationship with film tourism is unpacked. This dissertation then moves on to discuss the main focus of this investigation. A mere decade ago, the world was unaware of a book series called The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer. Yet in a few short years, the literary tourism associated with this series has turned a small town in northwest Washington State into a tourism phenomenon. This study considers the development, extent and impact of literary tourism on this town, called Forks. It also considers other literary and film tourism sites associated with The Twilight Saga to show the vast range of the impact literature can have on tourism. / Dissertation (MHCS)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / tm2015 / Historical and Heritage Studies / MHCS / Unrestricted

The Choice Between Love and Duty and Why Compulsion Can Be Moral : An Analysis of Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy from a Moral Perspective with a Consideration for the EFL Classroom / Valet mellan kärlek och plikt, och varför tankekontroll kan vara moraliskt rätt : En analys av Richelle Meads Törst ur ett moraliskt perspektiv med engelskundervisning i åtanke

Svensson, Emma January 2021 (has links)
In this essay, Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy is analysed through a moral perspective, with a focus on experimentalism and rationalism as presented by Christopher W. Gowans. Furthermore, the application of the novel and its connection to morality in the EFL classroom is discussed, as well as the possibility of introducing fanfiction in the classroom. The main conclusion that could be drawn is that the same action could be either moral or immoral depending on one’s view of morality. The results also indicate that Rose choosing her duty to Lissa over her love for Dimitri was a morally correct decision though it the morality in her having to choose at all is questionable. Furthermore, the results illustrate that compulsion can be moral or immoral depending on why it is used and that it is difficult for the antagonist to be morally correct. It was also concluded that the novel can act as a buffer between the student and the real world and thereby be a starting point for moral discussions in the classroom.

Karlsson, Linn January 2021 (has links)
