Previous issue date: 2018-03-29 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior - CAPES / The watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is a very important vegetable for a region of Northeast Brazil due to its adaptation as the natural conditions and the good characteristics of the fruit that are obtained. The aims of the current study are to assess watermelon genotype responses to calluses in anthers by using growth and temperature regulators, and to induce polyploidy through colchicine use (at different concentrations), exposure time, mechanical scarification and application methods. Anthers of Smile and Sugar Baby lines were inoculated in MS medium at different concentrations of 2.4-D or of BAP with 2.4-D, in combination with the pre-treatment (low temperature). Crimson Sweet cultivar seedlings were treated with different colchicine concentrations at two different times, with and without scarification, in order to induce polyploidy. Line LDRO was subjected to different colchicine concentrations at two different times and application methods: a) direct in the seed method (with, and without, scarification) (DSM, WE and WOE), b) Radicle emission method (ERM), c) Hypocotyl and root insertion point method (HRIM), d) At the apex of the seedling method (ASM) and e) Inverted hypocotyl method (IHM). Crimson Sweet flower buds were subjected to colchicine, at two different times, in order to induce polyploidy. Results have shown that 2.4-D often induced callus formation in both lines, but BAP/2.4-D interaction and pre-treatment did not increase the induction frequency. Crimson Sweet showed higher induction rate at 0.2% colchicine for 48h, WE. Line LDRO presented plants with tetraploid cells at 0.2% colchicine for 24 and 48h. The method 0.2% DSM, WE and WOE also generated plants with tetraploid cells. The diameter of treated pollen grains in flower buds have increased; the higher rate of non-reduced gametes induction was 16.07% and flower bud diameter (1.5mm) was estimated as adequate for induction / A melancia (Citrullus lanatus) ? uma hortali?a muito importante para a regi?o Nordeste do Brasil por sua adapta??o as condi??es clim?ticas e pelas boas caracter?sticas de fruto que se obt?m.

Moderate aerobic training maintains pancreatic islet cellular viability and prevents glucose stimulated insulin secretion impairment in mice fed a hypercaloric diet.Véras, Katherine Maria de Araujo 01 November 2016 (has links)
This study investigated the aerobic training effects on GSIS and pancreatic islet cellular viability in C57BL/6 mice fed a high fat (60%) and sucrose (20%) diet (HFDS). The groups were: HFDS, control diet (C), HFDS + training (HFDSTR) and control trained (CTR). After 8 weeks the HFDS significantly increased body mass and adiposity, decreased glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, and impaired GSIS and cellular viability; these effects were attenuated in HFDSTR. There were less viable pancreatic islets cells and impaired GSIS in HFDS than in HFDSTR and C. The decreased GLUT 2 and CuZn-superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) protein expression in HFDS were increased in HFDSTR. Most pancreatic islet responses were similar between HFDSTR and C. Eight weeks aerobic training prevented deleterious effects of HFDS on insulin sensitivity, cellular viability and GSIS, and maintained endogenous antioxidant enzyme content, thus suggesting that aerobic training may be beneficial to prevent adverse metabolic effects associated with westernized diet consuming.

Economic performance of commercial fishing fleets off the South Brazil Shelf from Angra dos Reis (23ºS) to Rio Grande (32ºS) / Desempenho econômico das frotas pesqueiras marinhas da região SE/S do Brasil entre Angra dos Reis (23ºS) e Rio Grande (32ºS)Amanda Ricci Rodrigues 07 May 2018 (has links)
In Brazil, economic data on fisheries are generally scarce, and difficult to interpret with respect to costs and fishery viability, thus making it difficult to practice consistent policy and industrial decision-making. This thesis aims to provide a cost-benefit analysis of seventeen commercial fishing fleets that operated during 2013-2014 in four port regions of the South Brazil Shelf: Angra dos Reis (AR), Santos and Guarujá (SG), Itajaí and Navegantes (IN) and Rio Grande (RG). The fleet types included the following: shrimp-trawlers, pair-bottom-trawlers, single-bottom-trawlers, bottom-gillnetters, octopus-pots, purse-seiners, surface-longliners and pole-and-line. Based on an unprecedented set of field survey data collected through interviews with vessel captains and owners, this study has the following goals: (1) to describe, calculate and compare the cost structure and gross profitability for all fleets; (2) to identify the factors (e.g., technical features and economic indicators) that determine fleet gross profit (from AR, SG and IN) using generalized additive models (GAMLSS); and (3) to assess the net profitability and viability of the fleets through the following three economic performance indicators: net profit margin (NPM), net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR). Additionally, the effects of fuel subsidy policies on profitability among South Brazil\'s fleets were evaluated. Generally, operational costs were higher than labor and fixed costs except for longliners, purse-seiners (from AR) and bottom-gillnetters (from RG), whereas labor costs were higher or had the same importance as operational costs. Fuel was the primary operational cost for all the fleets except pair-bottom-trawlers (SG) and purse-seiners (AR), for which vessel maintenance is the principal operational cost. Gross profitability varied significantly among the fleets and was clearly related to the following main factors: fuel consumption, vessel maintenance expense, ice costs, fish price and catch volume. Particularly for trawlers (from SG and IN) and all purse-seiners, technical features (i.e., vessel size and number of fishing trips, respectively) also explained profitability. Moreover, landing cost was a significant factor for those fleets\' profit. Economic performance indicators exhibited intra-fleet heterogeneity depending on region and revealed that 24% of the fleets were unviable (NPV less than zero), 23% were in fragile condition (IRRs and NPM lower than 11%), and 53% had achieved good economic returns whose IRR values exceeded 12% and whose NPM was > 10%. The worst economic performance was observed for single-bottom-trawlers (RG) and purse-seiners (SG) and the best for tuna-longliners (RG) and pair-bottom-trawlers (SG). Overall, subsidies were ineffective in increasing Rio Grande fleet profits and may be masking poor economic performance, primarily for single-bottom-trawlers (RG). Findings should guide private-sector decisions on how to protect the economic performance of the fleets, on fishery management measures (e.g., input controls, recovery plans for overfished stocks), and improve current governmental programs (e.g. the fuel subsidy program).

Previous issue date: 2016-02-11 / Poultry farming has increased and so does the amount of residues from producing areas with poultry litter and dead broilers, consequently, there is a major environmental problem for the poultry industry. Poultry litter, rich in organic matter, commonly applied on soil without treatment, acidifies it by releasing hydrogen ions since it stabilizes organic matter and also because it is a nitrogen fertilizer. Therefore, other applications for poultry litter are needed and should be studied, as for example, its use for power generation by anaerobic digestion. This process is attractive for the sector by treating waste and generating biogas that may replace the energy used in poultry. There is, however, an environmental restriction to this system because it requires a large amount of water to hydrolyze poultry litter. Therefore, this study has evaluated the anaerobic digestion of poultry litter in a digester built with glass fiber boxes whose total volume was 40.0 m3. There was a system of effluent reuse from the digester to dilute its next feeding and reduce water consumption during this process. The effluent was reused with its recirculation at the feeding moment with a motor pump, in a semi-continuous system (once a day). The anaerobic digestion has been stabilized at the organic feeding charges of 0.5 and 1.0 kg total volatile solids by m3 digester, so, the evaluations 1 and 2 were created, respectively. There was a hydraulic retention time of 10 days for both evaluations. The stabilization process occurred by Shewhart charts while the process analysis occurred by the process capacity and operational energy viability of the system indexes. At the evaluation number 2, the process was capable and viable for power operations, whose energy production as methane was 4.41 times superior to the electric energy consumed on operations of the treating system, 0.0182 m3 methane kg-1 VTS-1added. The produced effluent was not characterized as an adequate biofertilizer for crop yield because it showed small amounts of nutrients content. On the other hand, the sludge is available as organic manure since a great amount of nutrients has sedimented on the bottom of the digester. At the final period, after evaluation number 2, the digester and motor pump did not present any adequate feeding flux due to the large content of solids in the effluent; so, it was not possible to operate the digester. However, pH (close to 7.00) and the ratio between volatile acidity and total alkalinity of the effluent (below 0.3) at the final period indicated that anaerobic digestion showed some potential to be continued. This fact highlights the importance of other studies about dilution of poultry litter mechanism on the effluent of digester / O crescimento da produção de frangos tem concentrado resíduos nas regiões produtoras, cama de aviário e aves mortas, gerando um grande problema ambiental para a indústria avícola.

Uticaj kvaliteta semena na dinamiku razvoja, prinosi kvalitet suncokreta / The effect of seed quality on the developmentaldynamics, yield and quality of sunflowerMrđa Jelena 30 December 2015 (has links)

Izvod
IZ
Pet hibrida suncokreta (Sremac, Oliva, Cepko, NS-H-111 i Sumo 2 OR) gajena su tokom
Poljoprivrednog fakulteta u Novom Sadu.
semena, sadržaj ulja i prinos ulja.
zavisnost posmatranih osobina. Rezultati analize varijanse pokazali su visoko značajno
učešće glavnih faktora (godine, lokaliteta, frakcije semena, tipa ponika), kao i njihovih
međusobnih interakcija za većinu ispitivanih osobina. Na vrednosti ispitivanih osobina
najveći uticaj imala je godina istraživanja, a zatim lokalitet. Frakcija semena je imala visoko
značajan uticaj na klijavost semena, nicanje u polju, nakupljanje suve materije, prinos
semena i prinos ulja.
/
Five sunflower hybrids (Sremac, Oliva, Cepko, NS-H-111, and Sumo 2 OR) were grown in
2010 and 2011, on experimental fields of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops Novi
Sad - Rimski Šančevi, and experimental fields of the Agricultural Service Zrenjanin.
Laboratory tests were conducted at Laboratory for Seed Testing of the Institute of Field
and Vegetable Crops Novi Sad, and Biochemical Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture,
University of Novi Sad. The aim of this research was to determine whether seed material
from the same locality and the same field lot changes quality during seed processing, i.e.
dividing seed lot into fractions, and additionally whether this type of seed processing
affects seed yield, seed yield components, oil yield, and oil content of the selected
sunflower hybrids. The aim was also to determine if missing primary root in sunflower
seedlings results in statistically significant decrease of seed and oil yield, and establish how
it influences sunflower yield components. The following traits were examined: seed
germination and vigour, enzymatic activity, field emergence, dry matter accumulation (in
plant organs and in the whole plant), stem height, head diameter, seed yield, 1000 seed
mass, oil content and oil yield. Statistical analysis of data was performed by analysis of
variance of the trifactorial trial using the split-plot design model. Table of analysis of
variance shows the probability of significance of differences by F-test, and based on the
participation in the treatment sum of squares, percentage ratio of each factor was
calculated in the total variability. LSD values at 1 and 5% were computed to compare
differences between treatments of the observed factor. Correlation dependence between
the observed traits was determined. Economic performance of commercial fishing fleets off the South Brazil Shelf from Angra dos Reis (23ºS) to Rio Grande (32ºS) / Desempenho econômico das frotas pesqueiras marinhas da região SE/S do Brasil entre Angra dos Reis (23ºS) e Rio Grande (32ºS)Rodrigues, Amanda Ricci 07 May 2018 (has links)

Ecosystem Recovery in Estuarine Wetlands of the Columbia River EstuaryKidd, Sarah Ann 08 June 2017 (has links)
In the restoration of tidal wetland ecosystems, potential drivers of plant community development range from biotic controls (e.g. plant competition, seed dispersal) to abiotic controls (e.g. tidal flooding, salinity levels). How these controls influence the success of tidal wetland restoration are only partly understood, but have important implications for wetland habitat recovery. Specifically, the extent to which the existing native and non-native seed banks in tidally reconnected wetlands interact with these controls is not clear, yet the potential success of passive restoration methods depends upon this understanding.
For a 54-year chronosequence of eleven tidal wetland restoration sites in the Lower Columbia River of western Oregon, USA, it was hypothesized that native plant species and soil properties would show trends approaching reference levels within 3 to 20 years post-restoration and that lower elevation wetland areas within restored sites would exhibit a greater native species abundance and similarity to reference sites, compared with restored high elevation wetland areas. Results indicated that plant species richness, soil organic matter, bulk density, pH, and salinity conditions among the restoration sites reached reference wetland ranges within 3-6 years post-tidal reconnection. The mid-low marsh elevation zones (<2.5 m) recovered native plant cover within 3-6 years post-tidal reconnection, while high marsh elevation zones (>2.5 m) remained dominated by nonnative species Phalaris arundinacea and Juncus effusus subsp. effusus.
To investigate the mechanisms driving these non-native plant invasions, it was ii hypothesized that native and non-native wetland plant community distributions would be reflective both of their abundance in the seed bank and of their germination tolerance to wetland tidal flooding and salinity conditions. Using a factorial study design of three tidal conditions by three salinity levels, these hypotheses were tested in the greenhouse. Overall, non-native seeds were found to significantly outnumber native seeds in both seed banks. In the greenhouse, P. arundinacea and J. effusus were found to germinate more readily out of the seed bank under freshwater high-marsh flooding (1 hour a day) treatments as compared to oligohaline (3 ppt) mid-low marsh flooding (3-6 hours twice a day) treatments and to brackish salinity (10 ppt) treatments. Dominant native wetland species, Carex lyngbyei and Schoenoplectus lacustris, germination were not found to vary significantly among the treatments (p > 0.10).
These results indicate that the salinity and flooding gradients within these restored marshes suppress germination of the non-native species in the low-mid marsh but not in the high marsh, where they are likely able to outcompete the native species due to their dominance in the seed bank. The implications of these results for passive tidal wetland restoration efforts are that both seed bank composition and species-specific tolerances to restored tidal flooding and salinity gradients are key mechanisms driving native and nonnative plant community development and resilience.

However, extremely preterm infants (20 to 23 weeks of gestation) are infants of borderline viability. They are at greater risk for mortality and severe disability. Who can surrogate to make decisions about resuscitation with intensive care or palliative care for them in terms of their best interests? It is a dilemma. There is a potential conflict between palliative care and the general medical duty to save life. It presents complex medical, legal, ethical and social issues for their parents and the health professionals. Until now, it is still out ruled legally in Taiwan. This article focuses on the right to life of extreme prematurity. We will discuss different insights about the right to life of infant from history, culture, society and religion in the world, and analyze guidelines and legal regimes of different countries. Based on that, we can get objective solutions to the right to life of extreme prematurity in Taiwan, as an aid for parents in making ethical and legally based decisions.

Olfactory Transfer of Analgesic Drugs After Nasal AdministrationEspefält Westin, Ulrika January 2007 (has links)
Nasal administration of analgesics for achieving rapid pain relief is currently a topic of great interest. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) restricts access to the central nervous system (CNS) for several central-acting drugs, such as morphine and dihydroergotamine, which results in a substantial effect delay. Evidence for the olfactory transfer of drugs from the nasal cavity to the CNS after nasal administration, bypassing the BBB, is available for both animals and humans. The aims of this thesis were to study the olfactory transfer of morphine to the CNS after nasal administration, and to compare the nasal transport of analgesic drugs across nasal respiratory and olfactory mucosa. In vivo studies in rodents demonstrated that morphine is transferred via olfactory pathways to the olfactory bulbs and the longitudinal fissure of the brain after nasal administration. Further, olfactory transfer of morphine significantly contributed to the early high morphine brain hemisphere concentrations seen after nasal administration to rats. Olfactory transfer was tracked by collecting and analysing brain tissue and blood samples after right-sided nasal administration and comparing the results to the situation after i.v. administration. The olfactory transfer was also visualised by brain autoradiography. In vitro studies indicated that the olfactory mucosa should not be a major barrier to the olfactory transfer of dihydroergotamine or morphine, since transport of these drugs was no more restricted across the olfactory mucosa than across the nasal respiratory mucosa. The in vitro studies were performed using the horizontal Ussing chamber method. This method was further developed to enable comparison of drug transport across nasal respiratory and olfactory mucosa which cannot be achieved in vivo. In conclusion, these analgesic drugs showed potential for olfactory transfer, and access to the CNS by this route should be further investigated in humans, especially for the drugs with central effects that are currently under development for nasal administration.
