True crime - ett offer för underhållning : En retorisk analys av hur brottsoffer porträtteras i true crime-podcasts / True crime - a victim of entertainment : A rhetorical analysis of how crime victims are portrayed in true crime podcasts

Lindqvist, Moa, Berglund, Hanna January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate how crime victims are portrayed in the true crime genre, specifically podcasts, in order to find out what opportunities the receivers have for meaning making regarding victims. The study analyzes a total of four podcast episodes produced by P3 Dokumentär and Jakten på mördaren which are two very large podcasts in Sweden based on listeners. The theoretical framework consists of the framing theory and victimology. It is a qualitative study based on a rhetorical model which consists of various tools and concepts, such as context, forms of appellations and figure of speech. The results showed that the victims are portrayed based on their personality and appearance. Two of the episodes had a more detailed description overall about the victim, while the other two episodes focused more on the murderer and how the crime unfolded. The essay concludes that all the episodes consist of appellations, such as ethos and pathos to convince the audience, gain their trust and reach their emotions. There were different kinds of framing in all the episodes, and it told us a lot about how the producer of the episode wanted to portray the victim. We established some linguistic patterns that connected to previous studies made for similar purposes. Some linguistic patterns were that the victims often were portrayed innocent and as an underdog regardless how the story of the crime went. The details about the murder, the crime scene and the victim were ingoing and very figuratively described.

Effekten av identifierat och oskyldigt offer för intention att bli organdonator / Identified and innocent victim effects on intentions to donate organs

Blomberg, Ida, Ling, Samuel January 2022 (has links)
The number of organ donors in Sweden is not enough to support the demand for those in need of organ transplants. To be able to become an organ donor the health services needs to know the will of the deceased. The surest way to announce one's will is through a donation register. This essay describes a pre-registered experimental between-group study that examined whether the participants’ (N = 348) intention to register as an organ donor is affected by receiving information about a person who is in need of an organ, compared with statistical information. In addition, it was examined whether the intention is affected by whether the identified are presented as innocent or non-innocent. Data gathering was done via paper surveys. The measures used for intention to register as an organ donor were partly a self-assessed intention, and partly a behavioral measure where the participants were to answer if they wanted more information. The results of the analysis of data neither supported that presentation of an innocent identified victim would influence participants to higher intention, nor that a non-innocently identified victim would influence participants to lower intention. There was no significant difference between the groups for any of the measures. The study was conducted in a field that is not well researched. More research is needed to be able to draw any absolute conclusions from the results.

'n Kriminologiese ondersoek na motorvoertuigkaping met spesifieke verwysing na slagoffervatbaarheid, slagofferaandadigheid en die modus operandi van die oortreder (Afrikaans)

Davis, Linda 24 March 2004 (has links)
The nature and extent of vehicle hijacking is increasing world-wide. Vehicle hijacking is also one of the most serious crimes the South African Police Service has to deal with. The climate of violence that currently exists in South Africa and the need for more knowledge concerning priority crimes necessitate research on this topic. Although research that has been undertaken in South Africa to date focuses on the nature and extent of vehicle hijacking as well as the victim’s experience of the event, little empirical information exists regarding the modus operandi of offenders and the victim’s role in the commission of the crime. On account of this it was decided to investigate the planning, operational and escaping phases which reflect the modus operandi of the hijacker. An attempt was also made to determine the extent to which victims are vulnerable to vehicle hijacking and how individuals could contribute to their victimisation. To test the research expectations and hypotheses, 110 victims and 12 vehicle hijackers were involved in the study. A mailed questionnaire was sent to the victims, while interviews were conducted with 12 hijackers in the Pretoria Central Prison. Based upon the analysis and interpretation of the data it was found that most hijackers spend at least some time on the planning of a vehicle hijacking. They also considered both the positive (namely the financial advantage gained from hijacking) and the negative aspects (namely injuries, death, arrest and imprisonment) associated with committing the crime. Analysis of the data shows that vehicle hijacking does not occur involuntarily and that hijackers select specific targets. Although the misconception exists that the vehicle and the motorist are equally important during the selection of the target, the findings show that the vehicle which is on order, serves as the main reason for target selection. The race of the motorist as well as the number of passengers in the vehicle are the only two variables that influence hijackers not to select an identified target. Furthermore, it seems evident that the presence of policy officials is the only environmental factor that will deter a hijacker from committing the crime. The findings also show that hijackers prefer a specific day, time, place and circumstances to hijack a vehicle and that hijacking is a group activity that is executed by two to four males. Verbal threats as well as violence form part of the hijacking. It appears that race and occupation are the only two demographic variables that influence vulnerability. The make and value of the vehicle as well as the number of passengers in the vehicle could increase a victim’s potential risk for victimisation. The findings show that victims cannot be held accountable for a vehicle hijacking. Victims rarely neglect to take the necessary precautions against victimisation, enter potentially dangerous situations and/or drive recklessly. Based upon that findings, certain conclusions with regard to the aims of the study are reached. Based on this, recommendations are made concerning further research as well as suggestions regarding the prevention of vehicle hijacking. / Thesis (DPhil(Criminology))--University of Pretoria, 2005. / Social Work and Criminology / Unrestricted

The victim-offender as the epitome of the nonideal victim

Berrend, Ashanti January 2020 (has links)
The victim-offender overlap has been extensively studied and documented overthe last decades. Various studies have identified young men as the most commonvictims of violent assault, yet the public, the media, but also criminologicalresearch have actively favored the discourse on the ideal victim. Consequently, not much is known about how victim-offenders experience and perceivevictimization. The present systematic literature review aims to analyze how violent victimizationis experienced and narrated by male victim-offenders in the context of hegemonicmasculinity. Secondly, it aims to analyze in how far the public’s attitudes ofvictim blaming and victim concern are affected by a belief in a just world.Collectively, these findings aim to create a better understanding of criminal men’svictim identities. The public’s empathy and concern are reserved to the innocent and vulnerablevictim; criminal men are perceived as culpable and deserving of victimization. The latter use violence as an instrument of dominance and subordination, in linewith hegemonic masculinity beliefs, and reject the victim identity (antithesis ofmasculinity), forming a new category of the nonideal victim.

Socialtjänstens hantering av mäns våld mot kvinnor : En studie om könsmaktsperspektivets betydelse för socialarbetaren

Carlsson, Catharina January 2005 (has links)
Purpose: The aim of the study is to analyse why the socialworker at the socialservices havn’t implemented the perspective of woman as subordinate and men as superior. Questions: Is the perspective of woman as subordinate and men as superior significant for the socialworker? Is the organisation, colleagues or de individuals thought structure of importance when it comes to implement the perspective? Does the socialworkers view of the clients as victims have an impact on the fact that the perspective has been given interest?  Method: Critical case study. Flexible design; The study is based on interviews with socialworkers and study of documents and statistics Conclusion: One of the central findings of the field study was that the implementation of the perspective of woman as subordinate and men as superior was of no use for the socialworkers as they saw it. The findings showed that the definition of a victim was not used or that they were unconscious that the definition of a victim did affect them in their work. The possibilities for the organisation to learn is of  importance for the implementation of the perspective of woman as subordinate and men as superior. Finally the results showed that in some way their work was influenced not only of the definition of the victim but also indirect of the perspective of woman as subordinate and men as superior.

The Strength of a Witness: Empowerment and Resiliency in the Aftermath of Atrocity

McKay, Melissa 12 1900 (has links)
Victims and witnesses that testify before an international criminal tribunal such as the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) willingly subject themselves to scrutiny and bare their wounds before the world. Does this experience cause these vulnerable individuals undue psychological harm, re-traumatization, or worse? Existing literature indicates this may be the case, however using a new dataset I find the opposite to be true. Witnesses at the ICTY report feeling more positive than negative after their experiences on the stand. As the first systematic study on witness mental wellbeing, these findings contradict expectations found in previous research.

Zvláštnosti výslechu dětí / Specificity of interrogation of children

Holečková, Martina January 2014 (has links)
My thesis is focused on the interrogation of children, who are in the position of victim or witness. Statement of a child as well as an adult may serve as the significant evidence within the criminal proceeding. During this challenging action, which the interrogation of child certainly is, many specificities and difficulties are involved. These specificities and difficulties distinguish an interrogation of a child from an interrogation of an adult. In the first part I described the term "interrogation", in particular general grounds of it. To reveal specificities and difficulties of the interrogation of children, it is necessary to become familiar with the interrogation in its traditional form. In the parts of my thesis, where I wrote about a child, it shall be considered that the term "child" has the meaning as stated in the Convention on the Rights of the Child, i.e. every human being under eighteen years of age. I consider the chapter dedicated to the assurance of any statement of child to be one of the fundamental chapters. In opposition to the past ages there is a major believe within the modern society that children are capable of giving as quality statement as adults. The second part is focused on a special regulation of interrogation, which is provided by certain sections of the Penal Order. Besides...
