Sandell, Hanna-Lo, Hansson, Ellinor January 2019 (has links)
This is a phenomenological study that emanates from a case to investigate how platform shifts have affected children's television production. The case that is studied is Sveriges Television (SVT) and what adaptations they have made to their own children's productions in order to maintain their audience. The study investigates how SVT has been working to retain their audience from the increasing number of competitors and the challenges they face doing so. The methods that have been used to collect pertinent data are qualitative interview with four key people at SVT, who work with children's productions, and visual content analysis of their three most popular and successful productions. The purpose of the study is to give insight into Barnkanalen's adaptations, both past and ongoing, regarding their own productions in order to satisfy the target group's needs; as the technical evolution of TV-distribution and ever-changing consumer behaviour. The data that has been used to build a theoretical foundation is prior research within habits of media and consumption behaviour. As well as statistics produced by independent sources. The results of this study shows that SBT is working proactively for the change taking place and has adapted to maintain their competitiveness on the market, something that has also been paying off in form of high viewing rates online.

Mainframes and media streaming solutions : How to make mainframes great again

Berg, Linus, Ståhl, Felix January 2020 (has links)
Mainframes has been used for well over 50 years and are built for processing demanding workloads fast, with the latest models using IBM’s z/Architecture processors. In the time of writing, the mainframes are a central unit of the world’s largest corporations in banking, finance and health care. Performing, for example, heavy loads of transaction processing. When IBM bought RedHat and acquired the container orchestration platform OpenShift, the IBM lab in Poughkeepsie figured that a new opportunity for the mainframe might have opened. A media streaming server built with OpenShift, running on a mainframe. This is interesting because a media streaming solution built with OpenShift might perform better on a mainframe than on a traditional server. The initial question they proposed was ’Is it worth running streaming solutions on OpenShift on a Mainframe?’. First, the solution has to be built and tested on a mainframe to confirm that such a solution actually works. Later, IBM will perform a benchmark to see if the solution is viable to sell. The authors method includes finding the best suitable streaming software according to some criterias that has to be met. Nginx was the winner, being the only tested software that was open-source, scalable, runnable in a container and supported adaptive streaming. With the software selected, configuration with Nginx, Docker and OpenShift resulted in a fully functional proof-of-concept. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the authors never got access to a mainframe, as promised, to test the solution, however, OpenShift is platform agnostic and should, theoretically, run on a mainframe. The authors built a base solution that can easily be expanded with functionality, the functionality left to be built by IBM engineers is included in the future works section, it includes for example, live streaming, and mainframe benchmarking.

Byström, Christer January 2011 (has links)
Designing interactive TV applications is in many ways different than designing for the web for for PC applications. Lower screen resolution, longer distance between user and screen, and not least the use of a remote control as input device instead of keyboard and mouse make for different conditions than when designing PC applications. In this thesis the design of a video store for a digital TV set-top-box is being outlined. The design is made through interative hifi-prototyping and evaluation. The learnings from this work are applicable on other interactive TV-applications.

En utvärdering av Windows 8 Store applikationer som plattform för VOD-tjänster / An evaluation of Windows 8 Store applications as platform for VOD-services

Dilén, Erik, Lundmark, Emil January 2013 (has links)
As an effect of Video On Demand (VOD)-usage growing fast June, as a software provider for the television industry, wants to acquire skills and evaluate Windows 8 applications as a platform for VOD services. June already delivers a web-based solution for VOD and now wants a comparison and evaluation of particular knowledge required, time, complexity, data caching, advantages and disadvantages of a Windows 8 application set against this web solution. The objectives of the thesis can be divided into three parts: one in which complexity and work effort in Windows 8 application development is evaluated, one in which the tools required to develop a VOD application is evaluated and finally implementing a Windows 8 application for VOD. A Windows 8 application was developed and the selected solution methods were documented. Documentation and knowledge acquired during the development phase was then used as a basis for the analysis and evaluation objectives. The result is a Windows 8 application meeting the objectives set for the development part followed by an analysis and evaluation answering the given issues. Matters that are central through the report are Microsoft, WinRT, VOD, PlayReady, Smooth Streaming, Windows 8 application Development, data caching and interface development in Windows 8.

Advertising product improvement opportunities using segmentation in Video-on-Demand services : A case study of MTG’s opportunities in the shift from television to streaming video

Kohlberg, Marcus, Westman, Lars-Peter January 2014 (has links)
More and more people choose to watch television online through online video-on- demand services. For media corporations, such as the Modern Times Group (MTG), this means that video-on-demand will become an increasingly important source of revenue. Because video-on-demand is an online service, advertising products offered therein are in competition with other online advertising products. Currently, MTG’s video-on-demand advertising products are the same as on regular television, meaning they haven’t yet taken advantage of any advertising product development opportunities made possible by Internet technology. The purpose of this thesis is therefore to determine what MTG’s strategy should be to improve the competitiveness and revenue of their video-on-demand advertising products, and what key concerns need to be addressed in order to realize the determined strategy. By request of the commissioner, MTG, possible uses of segmentation to achieve the strategy are studied. The methods used to collect data include multiple interviews both at MTG and at their current advertising customers, as well as web analytics and a questionnaire. Both qualitative and quantitative analysis was used to answer the research questions. Findings suggest that MTG should strive to improve the engagement of their advertising products, through the use of contextual segmentation and self-segmentation. This goes against the current trend in online advertising, where segmentation is primarily used for ad targeting. The reason for not adhering to the trend is that MTG’s advertising customers operate in a television mindset, where ad targeting is of a very limited nature and engagement is of greater perceived value.

Přístupy k publikaci stream videa na webu. Realizace web služby pro tento účel. / Ways to publish streaming video on the Web

Suk, Miroslav January 2010 (has links)
The beginning of the thesis deals with history of interconnection between video and the internet from its origins to the present. The thesis has two main aims. The first aim is to provide an overview of main solutions how to provide stream video over the internet. In the thesis there are described three different solutions. The first solution is to buy a complex media server. The second one is to hire a special service which can provide video storage and its distribution over the internet. The service must allow integration to various information systems and web pages or web applications. The last part of the first aim speculates about possibilities how to solve the stream video distribution over the internet in a business and commercial domain without any expenses to provide the functionality. The second aim is a practical realization of a complete project. The content of the project is a solution of video conversion, storage and distribution over the internet in a real company. The main business activity of the company is the development and providing of web pages and applications on its own servers. At the beginning of the second part of the thesis there are evaluated possible ways how to solve the goal of the project. The possible ways are solutions that are mentioned in the first part of the thesis plus development of new a solution by the company itself. The last alternative has proved to be optimal from the economic point of view. The result of the project is a web service which is completely platform independent. So it is possible to use the web service in company's content management systems that are developed in PHP or .Net. In the thesis there is also mentioned an issue of mechanism called HTTP Pseudo Streaming.

Service Quality, Customer Satisfaction and Brand Loyalty in the Swedish Subscription Video On Demand-Industry : A mixed methods study on what factors of service quality affect customer satisfaction and brand loyalty within the subscription based video-on- demand services amongst 18-29 year olds in Sweden.

Strand, Elliot, Sandell, Viktor, Berg, Oliver January 2019 (has links)
The main objective of this research is to measure the relation between different dimensions, or constructs of service quality with customer satisfaction and brand loyalty; thereby identifying the most important factors of service quality that affect customer satisfaction and brand loyalty, in the context of subscription video on demand (SVOD) services in the Swedish market. This study utilised a mixed methods approach divided into two stages, whereof the first involved multiple focus groups for collecting qualitative data. The second stage consisted of quantitative data collection through online questionnaires from 122 valid respondents, ranging from the age of 18 to 29 by a non- probability sampling method. SPSS was used to analyse the data with three statistical analysis methods: bivariate correlations, for establishing evidence of construct validity; a reliability analysis to test Cronbach alpha for internal consistency; and multiple regression analysis to examine the relationship between independent and dependent variables. The research findings indicate that there is a positive, significant relationship between customer satisfaction and certain constructs of service quality. Also, findings indicate that the statistical relationship between the constructs of service quality and brand loyalty are partially mediated by customer satisfaction. As a result, companies operating in the Swedish SVOD-industry need to focus on improving the significant factors of service quality, as they may increase customer satisfaction of 18 to 29-year-old customers, and further create long-term relationships as a way of gaining competitive advantage.

Design of Scalable On-Demand Video Streaming Systems Leveraging Video Viewing Patterns

Hwang, Kyung-Wook January 2013 (has links)
The explosive growth in on-demand access of video across all forms of delivery (Internet, traditional cable, IPTV, wireless) has renewed the interest in scalable delivery methods. Approaches using Content Delivery Networks (CDNs), Peer-to-Peer (P2P) approaches, and their combinations have been proposed as viable options to ease the load on servers and network links. However, there has been little focus on how to take advantage of user viewing patterns to understand their impact on existing mechanisms and to design new solutions that improve the streaming service quality. In this dissertation, we leverage on the observation that users watch only a small portion of videos to understand the limits of existing designs and to optimize two scalable approaches -- the content placement and P2P Video-on-Demand (VoD) streaming. Then, we present our novel scalable system called Joint-Family which enables adaptive bitrate streaming (ABR) in P2P VoD, supporting user viewing patterns. We first provide evidence of such user viewing behavior from data collected from a nationally deployed VoD service. In contrast to using a simplistic popularity-based placement and traditionally proposed caching strategies (such as CDNs), we use a Mixed Integer Programming formulation to model the placement problem and employ an innovative approach that scales well. We have performed detailed simulations using actual traces of user viewing sessions (including stream control operations such as pause, fast-forward, and rewind). Our results show that the use of segment-based placement strategy yields substantial savings in both disk storage requirements at origin servers/VHOs as well as network bandwidth use. For example, compared to a simple caching scheme using full videos, our MIP-based placement using segments can achieve up to 71% reduction in peak link bandwidth usage. Secondly, we note that the policies adopted in existing P2P VoD systems have not taken user viewing behavior -- that users abandon videos -- into account. We show that abandonment can result in increased interruptions and wasted resources. As a result, we reconsider the set of policies to use in the presence of abandonment. Our goal is to balance the conflicting needs of delivering videos without interruptions while minimizing wastage. We find that an Earliest-First chunk selection policy in conjunction with the Earliest-Deadline peer selection policy allows us to achieve high download rates. We take advantage of abandonment by converting peers to "partial seeds"; this increases capacity. We minimize wastage by using a playback lookahead window. We use analysis and simulation experiments using real-world traces to show the effectiveness of our approach. Finally, we propose Joint-Family, a protocol that combines P2P and adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming for VoD. While P2P for VoD and ABR have been proposed previously, they have not been studied together because they attempt to tackle problems with seemingly orthogonal goals. We motivate our approach through analysis that overcomes a misconception resulting from prior analytical work, and show that the popularity of a P2P swarm and seed staying time has a significant bearing on the achievable per-receiver download rate. Specifically, our analysis shows that popularity affects swarm efficiency when seeds stay "long enough". We also show that ABR in a P2P setting helps viewers achieve higher playback rates and/or fewer interruptions. We develop the Joint-Family protocol based on the observations from our analysis. Peers in Joint-Family simultaneously participate in multiple swarms to exchange chunks of different bitrates. We adopt chunk, bitrate, and peer selection policies that minimize occurrence of interruptions while delivering high quality video and improving the efficiency of the system. Using traces from a large-scale commercial VoD service, we compare Joint-Family with existing approaches for P2P VoD and show that viewers in Joint-Family enjoy higher playback rates with minimal interruption, irrespective of video popularity.

The Criterion of Quality: A Paratextual Analysis of the Criterion Collection in the Age of Digital Distribution

Hyatt, Jonathan Charles 24 May 2014 (has links)
In 2011, home-video distribution company, The Criterion Collection, teamed up with streaming-content provider Hulu, extending their business model to include online streaming to subscribers through Hulu Plus. With the rise of Over-The-Top (OTT) media distribution services into the at-home market, the question that Criterion now faces is: how will the company survive as the market shifts away from Criterion’s established values? And, more pertinently, how does Criterion, by rebranding their image to compete in the streaming market, hope to attract new users without alienating their established fan base or sacrificing their brand identity? This thesis examines the Criterion Collection’s brand identity, business model, and history, focusing on its packaging and promotion, distribution channels (physical and streaming), and the formation of a self-established cinephile community through their website, Criterion.com. In my examination of Criterion’s attempts to branch out into new markets and adapt to alternative modes of media consumption, I argue that Criterion is taking strides to attract new audiences and build a tightly knit online fan community around their brand.
