Violence across the Land: Vigilantism and Extralegal Justice in the Utah TerritoryThomas, Scott K. 17 March 2010 (has links) (PDF)
For years historians of the American West have overlooked Utah when dealing with the subject of extrajudicial violence, while researchers of Mormonism have misread the existence of such violence in territorial Utah. The former asserts that Utah was free from extrajudicial proceedings and that such violence was nearly nonexistent within the contours of the Mormon kingdom. The latter maintains that any violence that existed in Utah was directly connected to the religious fanaticism of the Mormon populace in the region. The reality is that much of the extralegal violence in Utah was a result of the frontier, not the religion of the Mormons. Although episodes of bloodshed have been routinely categorized as religious zealotry, the evidence suggests that they are more properly catalogued within the context of western vigilantism—a practice well-documented and accepted among historians of the West. Utahans did employ extralegal means, like most other locales, for maintaining the existing social structure. Numerous factors led to conflicts of interests and, as was common during this time, violence became a part of life for early Utahans. It is the purpose of this examination to demonstrate how residents, leaders, and visitors in Utah justified the use of extrajudicial proceedings during the territorial period. Examining the violence that occurred in nineteenth-century Utah within the framework of the western extralegal culture provides a more nuanced understanding of the people of the region and demonstrates how their actions were not as aberrant as previous scholars have claimed. During the territorial period, Utahans experienced a significant amount of extralegal justice. The unique confluence of ethnic, religious, and political ideals led to clashes on the western frontier. There was no shortage of outlaws in Utah, nor of citizens and authorities capable and willing to go beyond the bounds of legal authority to maintain order within the territory. This thesis aims to properly place the Utah Territory in the broader framework of extralegal violence in the West and expand the historical understanding of summary justice in pre-statehood Utah.

Previous issue date: 2015-04-29 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This work aims to study the television series O Vigilante Rodoviário in dialogical and synchronous way. In the first field, we studied their relations with the literary narrative, as the melodrama, through the affiliation to the classic Hollywood movies. In the second field, we analyzed the ways of Brazilian television, a period marked by many trials and fed by numerous serial American productions vying with national programs.
Surviving after the bankruptcy of Film Company Maristela, Ary Fernandes and Alfredo Palacios created a television series that attracted the interests of the multinational Nestlé and that was broadcast on TV Tupi. This process does reflect on what being a pioneer within an even television in training and shows how the work sought to fit into hegemonic discourses to share some values with the urban middle class, who owned public capital to acquire an expensive receiver and inaccessible to the masses and do not constitute, therefore, a product of the culture industry.
Internally, the representations of the series were studied in their cultural and pedagogical dimension. There is in it a Manicheans view of the world according to which the criminal evil never triumphs. On the other hand, the show presents the viewer values as legalism, respect for elders and hierarchies, the love of animals, the importance of collective security and the exaltation of the São Paulo State Highway Patrol.
O Vigilante Rodoviário, on the one hand, conveys values of the urban upper middle class, and on the other, was established as an attempt to create a national industry pioneer series of programs. It can be seen as a quest to recover the national cinema, but limited by competition from American cinema hegemonic even in Brazil / Este trabalho tem como objetivo estudar o seriado televisivo O Vigilante Rodoviário nos sentidos dialógicos e sincrônico. No primeiro campo, levantamos suas articulações com a narrativa literária, como o melodrama, passando pelas filiações ao cinema clássico hollywoodiano. No segundo campo, analisamos os caminhos da televisão brasileira, numa fase marcada por diversas experimentações e alimentada por inúmeras produções americanas seriadas que disputavam com os programas nacionais.
Procurando sobreviver após a falência da Companhia Cinematográfica Maristela, Ary Fernandes e Alfredo Palácios criaram um seriado televisivo que atraiu os interesses da multinacional Nestlé e que foi transmitido pela TV Tupi. Esse processo faz refletir sobre o que é ser um pioneiro no interior de uma televisão ainda em formação e mostra como a obra procurava se encaixar em discursos hegemônicos ao compartilhar alguns valores com a classe média urbana, público que possuía capital para adquirir um aparelho receptor oneroso e inacessível às massas, não se constituindo, assim, um produto da indústria cultural.
No âmbito interno, as representações do seriado foram estudadas em sua dimensão cultural e pedagógica. Há nele uma visão maniqueísta sobre o mundo segundo a qual o mal criminoso jamais triunfa. Por outro lado, o seriado apresenta ao telespectador valores como o legalismo, o respeito aos mais velhos e às hierarquias, o amor aos animais, a importância da segurança coletiva e a exaltação da Polícia Rodoviária do Estado de São Paulo.
O Vigilante Rodoviário, portanto, de um lado, transmite valores da alta classe média urbana e, do outro, constituiu-se como uma tentativa de criar uma indústria nacional de programas seriados de forma pioneira. Ele pode ser visto como uma busca por recuperar o cinema nacional, mas limitada pela concorrência do cinema norte-americano hegemônico até mesmo no Brasil

The research defends the idea that it is possible for an individual to develop vigilant attention that makes thought flexibilization and change in the course of action, possible. This operation is called Internal Dialogue and is essentially characterized by a continuous openness towards novelty and learning. This makes it possible to minimize the usual way thought operates, in a automatic fashion (automatism). The research was based on theoretical references and ideas of David Bohm (1989;1994;2005) and Michael Polanyi (1983). The main emphasis was the understanding that a crisis situation enables awareness and state of alert that favors a more flexible thought pattern (Arag?o Gomes, 1994, 1997). The methodology used was presentation and analysis of these moments through autobibliographical records with indication of crisis on behalf of the subjects. Other criteria were also used that enabled the composition of the analyzed material such as the fact that: the subjects were public and real, the data was available through accessible material; the subjects identified themselves as in crisis; these crisis were of varied kinds; they had different social, cultural and professional profiles. Thus, three auto-bibliographical elements were selected: the Infidel: the story of a woman that challenged Islam (2007), written by the political Muslim author Ayaan Hirsi; Still me: memories (2001), of the actor Christopher Reeve as well as Confessions of a Philosopher (2001), by the philosopher Bryan Magee. In these books an analysis was made related to parts that stated action an though operation that express internal dialogue. These were organized into categories that were pointed out as relevant for the identification of internal dialogue such as: Perceptions of physical reaction; emotions, beliefs and issues, individual actions, self judgment and thought, self questioning, comprehension, observation and empirical investigation, perception of the changes they performed in the world, escape of conditioning as well as action that resulted in new meaning. The analysis performed reinforces our goal once it sated that internal dialogue is an important tool that allows thought awareness, minimizing common automatism and making consciousness possible as well as favoring the occurrence of critical and reflexive thought. Thus, final considerations deal with the need for the development of teaching methodologies that address internal dialogue as a counterpoint to the many daily action that reinforce the automatism of thought / Esta tese tem como objetivo permitir maior compreens?o sobre a opera??o do pensamento e sugerir alternativas para a forma??o de indiv?duos reflexivos, cr?ticos, aut?nomos e criativos.
