The expressive resources adopted by Virgil (70 - 19 a.C.), the celebrated poet from the time of Emperor Augustus, in his composition entitled Bucólicas are undoubtedly factors that contribute to the recognition of the author in the history of Latin Literature. The objective of this research is to identify such arrangements and analyze the textual mechanisms that constitute meaning and how they can be mobilized in the discursive production. When applying the principles of Literary Semiotics and Poetic, it is possible to investigate the selection and combination of the figurative elements present in the poems III, V and VII of Virgil's work, which are responsible for creating the concrete universe, representative of his specific thematic significance (the idealized world of shepherds and their relationship with nature, music and poetry). By highlighting the elements that classify the text as poetic of bucolic gender, this study intends to investigate the figurativity in classical latin texts based on the analysis of the effects of meaning. Therefore, with the theoretical framework based primarily on semiotic theory of meaning, proposed by A. J. Greimas, the research works on investigating how the figures installed in speech are combined and coated with expressiveness

Sisul, Ana Clara 03 December 2018 (has links)
The death of youth in the Aeneid is a product of a transgressive act of appropriation (whether literal or figured) of someone else’s weapons, which represents, as a metonymy, these young warrior’s premature insertion in war. Virgil presents this event as a sacrifice for a bigger gain: the establishment of empire. However, all the scenes involved carry a tragic overtone that portrays an alternative interpretation: the loss of the future that ought to guarantee the survival of Aeneas’ heroic task. As a result, the representation of mortes immaturae becomes an expression of a dissident voice inside Virgil’s work.

Um estudo do intertexto virgiliano no Culex / A study of the Virgilian intertext on Culex

Polastri, Bárbara Elisa, 1987- 10 October 2013 (has links)
Orientador: Patricia Prata / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-24T23:19:21Z (GMT). This dissertation has as the main object of study the latin poem entitled Culex ("The Mosquito"), which is part of the Appendix Vergiliana ("Virgilian Appendix"), a collection of texts transmitted together with Virgil¿s masterpieces. On the first chapter of this study, after a brief presentation of the Appendix, a discussion about the reception, the authorship and the date of the concerning poem is presented, and, based on the Classical Studies intertextual theory, it is attempted to reflect about in which degree the authorship influences on the Culex reading and analysis. It is also discussed the poem¿s genre ¿ the epyllion ¿ and it is presented a detailed review of its structure and subject, in which is remarkable the genre miscellany, the parodic character and the dialogue with the Eclogues, Georgics and Aeneid. The second chapter consists of a broadly annotated translation of the poem (up to now inedited in Portuguese), followed by the Latin text. At last, the third chapter is composed by some analysis ¿ based on the intertextual theory ¿ of some passages of the Culex and of the three Virgil¿s canonical works / Mestrado / Linguistica / Mestra em Linguística

[en] MANUEL ODORICO MENDES AND THE TRANSLATION OF THE CLASSICS: THE PARATEXTS IN A BRAZILIAN VIRGIL / [pt] MANUEL ODORICO MENDES E A TRADUÇÃO DOS CLÁSSICOS: OS PARATEXTOS EM UM VIRGÍLIO BRASILEIRO

MARINA LETTI MARCUCCI 15 December 2017 (has links)
[en] In nineteenth-century Brazil, in addition to the development of a literature concerned with the national elements, it is possible to identify the translation of the classics in order to instruct the literate society. Manuel Odorico Mendes was significant for this movement, opting for the translation and emulation such as Virgil and Homer in order to use them as tools for a political-pedagogical project of formation. Odorico Mendes was the first integral translator of the Latin and Greek poets in Brazil and developed essays that accompanied his translations. His notes are an act of language that, together with the translated material, can be understood as an instruction manual for the literates of the new scenario of nineteenth century in Brazil.

“Altamente teatral” : subject, nation, and media in the works of Virgilio Piñera

Cabrera Fonte, Pilar 21 September 2010 (has links)
This study analyzes Virgilio Piñera’s concept of performance in relation to his representation of mass media products and technologies. The central argument is that Piñera’s notion of theatrical representation connects fiction with politics in subversive ways, challenging assumptions of naturalness at different levels, from that of the gendered self, to the family and the nation. To support this argument, the study focuses on Piñera’s representation of a variety of mass media genres as these inspire everyday life performances, mainly in Cuba but also in Argentina. While fictional models and sentimental narratives from the mass media most often convey oppressive conceptions of gender, family, and nation, the author’s representation of the media’s pervasive influence questions and denaturalizes those conceptions. Piñera stresses the disruptive potential of individual performance against the repetitive character of both the mass media industry and the social reenactments of its sentimental myths. His references to mass culture thus destabilize structures of power, including stereotypes of both sexuality and gender. The analysis shows that Piñera’s fictions exhibit important characteristics of queer aesthetics. The study comprises a time span of almost three decades, from the early 1940s to the late 1960s, and focuses on a selection of Piñera’s criticism, drama, poetry, and narrative. Within those texts, special attention is given to references to photography, radio programs, romance novels, movies, and popular music. The organization of Piñera’s texts in this study answers to both thematic and chronological considerations. Chapter 1 outlines the study’s objectives and methodology, also providing a background on critical studies about Piñera. Chapters 2 and 3 deal with plays and short-stories written before the 1959 Cuban Revolution. Chapter 2 examines texts that represent both family and nation in relation to a variety of mass media genres, from Cuban “radionovelas” to Hollywood gangster films. Chapter 3 focuses on two narratives, written in Buenos Aires, that address posing and self-representation in relation to issues of sexuality, masculinity, and power. Chapter 4 deals with a selection of poems written, for the most part, after 1959. In these poems, the literary use of photography stresses theatrical self-representation, often in direct resistance to revolutionary reformulations of masculinity in the figure of the “New Man.” / text

En el Vórtice cel Huracán. Reescrituras Oblicuas del Caribe Hispano en los Discursos Literarios de Virgilio Piñera y Aída Cartagena Portalatín

Fernández, Morbila January 2010 (has links)
An oblique reading of the European canon constitutes the discursive center for present day Caribbean literature. In doing this, authors question Eurocentric representational codes of Caribbean identity while they create their own discourses in "a certain way", that is, from a certain perspective and by means of hybrid appropriation and synchretization of the very models that feed their imagination. As this analysis purports to show, writers Virgilio Piñera (Cuba) and Aída Cartagena Portalatín (Dominican Republic), by their rereading of the canon, establish in their works hybrid dialogs between the European There and the Caribbean Here. In that line, among the canonical cultural signifiers that the authors adopt, they privilege the appropriation of Greek myths. Piñera does this in his theater piece Electra Garrigó, and Cartagena in her novel Escalera para Electra. In Piñera's work, the main devices utilized are humor, irony, and parody of the text by Euripides, obtained by the used of "choteo", a particular brand of Cuban parodic humor in the manner of Bakhtin's carnavalization. This technique is employed along with the use of heteroglossia, which is utilized by Cartagena as well in her novel. In her work, the Dominican author constructs a parallel and intertextual reading of the same play by the Greek dramatist from the positionality of a female subject. Although with different strategies and in different literary genres, Piñera and Cartagena structure their literary discourses with themes that reflect their cultural identities from the synchretism of difference and from the perspective of a Caribbean subject. This dissertation confirms the efficacy of the discursive strategies they utilize on taking the female subject and the family as the axis of their contesting, unofficial readings of the history and cultural identity of the Caribbean.
