vLab: A Cloud based Resource and Service Sharing Platform for Computer and Network Security Education

January 2010 (has links)
abstract: Cloud computing systems fundamentally provide access to large pools of data and computational resources through a variety of interfaces similar in spirit to existing grid and HPC resource management and programming systems. These types of systems offer a new programming target for scalable application developers and have gained popularity over the past few years. However, most cloud computing systems in operation today are proprietary and rely upon infrastructure that is invisible to the research community, or are not explicitly designed to be instrumented and modified by systems researchers. In this research, Xen Server Management API is employed to build a framework for cloud computing that implements what is commonly referred to as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS); systems that give users the ability to run and control entire virtual machine instances deployed across a variety physical resources. The goal of this research is to develop a cloud based resource and service sharing platform for Computer network security education a.k.a Virtual Lab. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Educational Information Security Laboratories : A Literature Review

Khoshbin, SeyedAli January 2016 (has links)
Educational centers are investigating the feasibility of creating InfoSec laboratory for their students in order to enhance their practical experience. Experiments could be performed in either physical or virtual labs. The advantage of virtual lab compared to physical lab is utilization of minimal components with the aid of hypervisor software. In addition, reverting back computer configuration to original state rapidly, capability of altering resource configuration immediately and managing all virtual machines via a single console are some features that highlighted the use of this technology in the laboratories. Despite the virtual laboratory tremendous advantages, literature lacks a comprehensive review on implemented virtual labs. The purpose of this thesis is to fill this gap by inspecting the implemented virtual labs in education center. Consequently, the thesis outcome would provide an insight to other institutes and researchers to utilize these labs as models to decrease the effort and expenses for implementing InfoSec labs. The offered assignments of these labs would be elaborated in order to provide a sample for execution of these experiments for other researchers in their own environment. Furthermore, comparison of the discovered virtual labs based on availability, maintainability and security would be performed. Finally, a suggested physical layout of virtual lab is being presented. Twelve universities had been scrutinized which are aligned with the thesis goal.

The Impact of a Web-Based Virtual Lab on the Development of Students' Conceptual Understanding and Science Process Skills / Die Auswirkungen eines „Web-Based Virtual Lab“ auf die Entwicklung des konzeptionellen Verständnisses und wissenschaftlichen Prozessskills

El-Sabagh, Hassan A. 14 February 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Over the last few years, the use of the web and simulation technologies in school education has become widespread. The purpose of this study was to compare the impact of a web-based Virtual Lab (WVL) environment with that of traditional educational experience in relation to conceptual understanding and science process skills in natural science for fourth grade primary school students. Using an instructional design model, the author developed a WVL; the design consisted of 3D animations and interactive experimental activities. The research instruments for the study were also developed; two online pre/post tests on conceptual understanding and science process skills were used to collect data. The sample used in the study consisted of 70 students from two primary language schools in Mansoura city, Dakahlyia Governorate, Egypt. The sample was divided into an experimental group and a control group. The author used an experimental design wherein the experimental group was exposed to the WVL, while the control group studied in a traditional setting and performed related activities. The pre-test results indicated that the entry-level for conceptual understanding in science and science process skills of both groups of students were equal, which guaranteed the reliability of the research. The findings of the post-test highlighted the following points: (a) Students in the experimental group had significantly higher mean scores in conceptual understanding especially in two of cognitive levels. (b) The experimental group performed better in science process skills, especially in five of these skills. (c) There was no significant difference in the performance of boys and girls within the experimental group for science process skills. (d) The estimation of the effect sizes (indication of the level of difference between the post-test scores of the experimental and control group) revealed that, the effect size was large for two skills, medium for three skills, and small for only one skill. In conclusions, the WVL provided considerable support for fourth grade students and helped them to improve their conceptual understanding in science and science process skills. These results go beyond previous research results, which did not focus on very young learners. The use of WVL contributed considerably in elevating learning outcomes; the results provided an empirical evidence of the advantages of web-based learning (WBL) for education policy makers.

Pereira, Saulo Ramos de Carvalho January 2015 (has links)
Orientador: Prof. Dr. Edson Pinheiro Pimentel / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal do ABC, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Engenharia da Informação, 2015. / Several researchs have shown the difculties in Chemistry teaching and learning process. The exercise, as well as performing experiments involving Chemistry is not always are present in the life of students. The lack of laboratories and trained professionals to operate them, results in the dificulty of contextualize concepts because of the scarcity of experimental practices necessary for teaching and learning chemistry. Despite the educators' eforts to propose theoretical models and use diferent methodologies in teaching, research shows that due to lack of motivation, physical structure and insucient learning materials, it is increasingly necessary to use new technologies to assist in learning, making this process attractive, dynamic and modern in the learning environments. This work aims to create conditions to increase the availability of resources in order to increase the experimental practice at the Chemistry Teaching. In this sense, a Gamied Virtual Laboratory for the teaching of Chemical Transformations was developed using game elements. In addition, experiments were conducted with students to obtain the degree of satisfaction of users using the tool. The results indicate that the Virtual Laboratory contributes to student learning due to the similarities in experiments, and also the motivation provided by gamication, allowing educators use this tool as a support for the teaching and learning process of practical activities carried out in the laboratory.
