Secure and Trusted Execution Framework for Virtualized Workloads

Kotikela, Srujan D 08 1900 (has links)
In this dissertation, we have analyzed various security and trustworthy solutions for modern computing systems and proposed a framework that will provide holistic security and trust for the entire lifecycle of a virtualized workload. The framework consists of 3 novel techniques and a set of guidelines. These 3 techniques provide necessary elements for secure and trusted execution environment while the guidelines ensure that the virtualized workload remains in a secure and trusted state throughout its lifecycle. We have successfully implemented and demonstrated that the framework provides security and trust guarantees at the time of launch, any time during the execution, and during an update of the virtualized workload. Given the proliferation of virtualization from cloud servers to embedded systems, techniques presented in this dissertation can be implemented on most computing systems.

The social production of vulnerabilities online : A Tale about digitalised disaster

Nilsson, Emma January 2023 (has links)
This thesis aims to display how disastrous events in the cyber domain can be understood to have root causes attributed to non-technical vulnerabilities. The goal is to show the accelerating importance in understanding the cyber domain as any other societal arena. Further, the European Union and reports about the threat landscape from the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity will be analysed. Theoretical assumption from the field of disaster risk reduction about vulnerabilities will be used to understand how vulnerabilities are understood in the empirical material. The first report which was released in the year of 2012 and the most current one from the year of 2022 will be compared to understand patterns and correlations in the development during the last decade. The results shows that the reports have multiple features that can be interpreted as understanding of how events offline relate to threats online. Further the comparison shows that even if superficial factors and their appearance have changed, the underlying vulnerabilities have much in common.

Monoamine Oxidase and Sensory Gating: Psychophysiological Vulnerabilities among Teenage Smokers

Wan, Li 11 May 2006 (has links)
Smoking is one of the leading causes of death in the world. About 80% of smokers start smoking before the age of 18. In the Appalachian area and the South in the United States, smoking percentages among adults and adolescents are higher than in other regions. Female smoking shows a variety of different trends from male smoking, and smoking brings particular health problems related to production to female smokers. These findings highlighted the importance of studying female teenage smokers in southwest Virginia. The initial project aimed to identify risk factors that might prevent smoking in an early stage. Dr. Helen Crawford led the Cognitive Neuroscience Lab at Virginia Tech in discovering the psychophysiological vulnerabilities of female teenage smokers. Toward this end, event-related potential (ERP), personality, and behavioral data were collected in teenage female smokers and non-smokers. These data were analyzed to examine possible psychophysiological vulnerabilities in female teenage smokers such as deficits in brain and cognitive function, personality traits, and environment influences. The purpose of this dissertation is to further analyze these data to elaborate and clarify the relationships among these vulnerabilities toward understanding teenage smoking behavior. Participants were 49 teenage girls (smokers and non-smokers) with age from 14 to 18. The measures included sensory gating, platelet MAO-B activity, attention, memory, temperament, schizotypal personality, recognition of facial expressions, taste and smell. The initial set of analyses compared smokers and non-smokers, including those classified as high and low dependent, on all dependent measures. The results suggested some psychophysiological vulnerabilities in female teenage smokers, which have been used as support for the self-medication and the orbito-frontal dysfunction models of why teenagers smoke (Crawford et al., 2004). Further examination of these factors may help teenagers to reduce the smoking dependency and possibly improve cognitive function. Specifically, this dissertation focused on the role of the variable of monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) in the correlations among sensory gating, MAO and other cognitive and personality measures. All smokers were divided into high and low MAO groups first. Comparison analyses were conducted between them. The high MAO group showed better sensory gating function than the low MAO group. Correlation analyses were conducted among all of the measures. The significant linear relationships between MAO and sensory gating, MAO and CO level and MAO and temperament were demonstrated. MAO activity positively correlated with the sensory gating function and negatively correlated with CO level and temperament characteristics. Finally, to explore the mechanisms of the relationship between MAO and sensory gating, the neurotransmitter systems related to MAO and sensory gating were discussed. / Ph. D.

Non-Governmental Organization Vulnerabilities: Donors and Resource Dependence

Islam, Carolyn A 01 January 2016 (has links)
The main objective of my thesis paper is to determine which organizations from a wide range of NGOs, including their donor relationships, are susceptible to funding manipulation and why. Through review of a focused selection of literature and case studies, I seek to identify a pattern of characteristics or variables among the weaker organizations which increases vulnerability to such practices. I will review the organizations' size, market competition, funding strategies, and supply-led contracts. I intend to conclude with the various ways in which NGO's can protect against funding manipulation.

Emotional Testimonies: An Ethnographic Study of Emotional Suffering Related to Migration from Mexico to Arizona

Crocker, Rebecca 13 July 2015 (has links)
UA Open Access Publishing Fund / It is increasingly argued that social and economic inequities poorly affect overall health. One of the means through which these inequities are translated to the body is via negative emotions, which carry known psychological and physiological responses. This paper examines migration-related psychosocial stressors impacting first-generation Mexican immigrants in southern Arizona, and reports on the primary emotional experiences immigrants associate with these stressors. Data were drawn from a qualitative, ethnographic study conducted over the course of 14 months during 2013–2014 with first-generation Mexican immigrants (N = 40) residing in Tucson Arizona and service providers working directly in the immigrant community (N = 32). Results indicate that the primary structural vulnerabilities that cause emotional hardship among immigrants are pre-migration stressors and adversity, dangerous border crossings, detention and deportation, undocumented citizenship status, family separation, and extreme poverty. Many of these factors have intensified over the past decade due to increased border security and state level anti-immigrant legislation in Arizona. Immigrants connected these hardships to the emotions of trauma (50%), fear (65%), depression (75%), loneliness (75%), sadness (80%), and stress (85%), and most respondents reported suffering from three or more of these emotions. Given the heavy emotional toll of migration and the direct impact that regional legislation and border security had on well-being, this paper argues that emotion be considered an important mechanism for health declines in the immigrant community. In order to stem the frequency and intensity of emotional stress in the Mexican immigrant community in Tucson, it is imperative to support organizations and policies that promote community building and support networks and also expand access to and availability of mental health services for immigrants regardless of documentation status.

Development of an Audit Classification Index (ACI) for Federal e-learning Systems Security Vulnerabilities

Johnson, Gerald Deawne 01 January 2012 (has links)
As U.S federal government agencies have increased the use of the Internet to utilize technologies such as e-learning, U.S. federal government information systems have become more exposed to security vulnerabilities that may contribute to system attacks and system exploitation. U.S. federal government agencies are required to come up with their own security solutions for ensuring their information systems are secured, however, security experts are having difficulties identifying what is needed to classify their information systems as secured. The aim of this developmental study is to develop an audit classification index (ACI) to assist in identifying vulnerabilities and classifying electronic learning (e-learning) systems at U.S. federal government agencies. The study identified the requirements for performing an audit of e-learning systems in U.S. federal government agencies. After the requirements were identified, the study used the ACI to audit the federal e-learning systems using a black-box approach and classified the e-learning systems based on the results of the audit. Additionally, a comparative group of electronic government (e-government) systems were also audited and classified using the ACI to compare the results against the e-learning systems. This study sought to contribute to the body of knowledge regarding the information security of U.S. federal e-learning systems by developing an ACI that can be used to identify vulnerabilities and classify U.S. federal e-learning systems as secured, good, marginal, unsatisfactory, or unsecured. By identifying the vulnerabilities of a particular information system, security experts should have a better understanding of what is needed to secure and determine the security level of U.S. federal information systems.

An Investigation of the Impact of the Slow HTTP DOS and DDOS attacks on the Cloud environment

Helalat, Seyed Milad January 2017 (has links)
Cloud computing has brought many benefits to the IT industry, and could reduce the cost and facilitate the growth of businesses specially the startup companies which don’t have enough financial resources to build their own IT infrastructure. One of the main reason that companies hesitate to use cloud services is the security issues that the cloud computing technology has. This thesis at the beginning has an overview on the cloud computing concept and then reviews the cloud security vulnerabilities according to the cloud security alliance, then it describes the cloud denial of service and will focus on analyzing the Slow HTTP DOS attack and then will analyze the direct and indirect impact of these attacks on virtual machines. We decided to analyze the HTTP slow rate attacks because of the craftiness and covered characteristic also the catastrophic impact of the Slow HTTP attack whether it’s lunched on the cloud component or lunched from the cloud. There are some researches on the different way that a web server or web service can be protected against slow HTTP attacks, but there is a research gap about the impact of the attack on virtual environment or whether this attack has cross VM impact or not. This thesis investigates the impact of Slow HTTP attack on virtualization environment and will analyze the direct and indirect impact of these attack. For analyzing the Slow HTTP attacks, Slow headers, Slow body and Slow read are implemented using Slowhttptest and OWASP Switchblade software, and Wireshark is used to capture the traffic. For analyzing the impact of the attack, attacks are lunched on VirtualBox and the impact of the attack on the victim VM and neighbor VM is measured.

(Re)internação de idosos em um hospital privado: vulnerabilidades, fragilidades e enfrentamentos / (Re)admission of elderly in a private hospital: vulnerabilities, fraily and confrontation

Francisco, Célia Maria 14 April 2015 (has links)
Somente as mulheres apresentaram infecção do trato urinário. / Introduction: The (re) admissions amongst elderly have been increasing in the last years, mainly those with advanced aged who lead to a high demand of tertiary attention. Know its vulnerabilities, its frailties and the diagnosis which the elderly are subjected, guided by the Brazilian list of admission by sensitive condition to primary attention (ICSAP), may orient changes in the caring scenario. Objective: Analyze the vulnerabilities, the frailty and the confrontation of the illness in admitted elderly in a private hospital. Method: Prospective research, quantitative, qualitative, performed in the Medical Clinic of a Private Hospital of the City of São Paulo between February and December of 2014. The gathering data were developed in two stages, the first through a questionnaire and the application of the Fabrício-Wehbe Frailty Assessment Scale, in elderly clinical patients (above 60 years) by convenience sample, the second performed by intentional sample, selected among the first stage participants and with diagnostic of ICSAP, by home interview, from telephone scheduling after the discharge. Complying the Resolution 466/12, the study were approved by the USP Ethics Committee in Research of the Nursing School and from the Private Institution, and the participants sign the Free and Clarified Consent Term. Were used the ANOVA test and the Fisher exact test (significative for 0,05), for the quantitative data and the qualitative analyzes, performed through the Alceste Program. Results: Participated in the study 60 elders, and, from those, 12 participated in the second stage. From the 60 elderly, 65% were women, 48% had 80 years or more, 88,3% were Brazilian, 90.0% were Caucasian, 68.3% Catholics, 85.7% of men were married, and 51.3% widow women, and 75.4% retired. The most frequent diagnostics were pneumonia and urinary tract infection, corresponding, respectively, to 21.7% and 18.3%. Only women presented urinary tract infection. From the comorbidity, stands out the hypertension amongst women, 51.3%,and the diabetes in men, 34,8%. The urinary loss were referred by 43.3%, being most frequent amongst the women (46,2%). From the elderly, 41.7% didnt show frailties, 16.7% were apparently vulnerable, 23,3% had mild frailty, 11.7% moderate and 6.7% severe. The Fisher test showed a marginal (0,051) of the frailty with the age, where the mild and moderate forms predominated in advanced age and the severe hit the 70-years-old group. About the preventive actions, the men, (61.9%) attended the appointments more times a year. It was found that 95% of the elderly reported always having social support. Although hold health insurance, 61.7% used the Brazils Unified Health System (SUS) for some type of service, occurring in 64.1% from women and in 57.1% of men. The admission by ICSAP (58.3%) was most frequent amongst the women (69.2%), increasing with age in both sexes. The ICSAPs are the admissions that could have been avoided by primary attention action and the applied shown that are statistic associated to age. (0,017). In the search to know the elderly vulnerabilities, three categories were revealed: in the individual, the speeches expressed the confrontation of the disease, the limitations that compromise the daily life and the existence of the family support, even though the social relationships being compromised amongst the more dependents; in social, the financial support enabled access and security in treatment and; at last, in programmatic, it was found the easy access, a resolute therapeutic route, however, some obtained in junctions for having the right to health care services. Conclusion: The fact that more than a half of are admitted by ICSAP, shows the importance of the investment in prevention and disease control in the primary attention, specially by the mild and moderate profile of frailties in advanced age. The individual area is where the elderly presented more vulnerability, mostly concerned to the confrontation of the decease. Finally, the elderly population showed to be privileged and with low vulnerability.

Made available in DSpace on 2016-03-22T17:26:20Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 amelia.pdf: 1094429 bytes, checksum: db34c70d99738757b179817c9496b86b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-03-22 / Historic changes in Western societies have led to an increase in the use of psychoactive substances, mainly among young people. Access to drugs has been facilitated by the development of the chemical industry, which has allowed the production of heroin, cocaine, morphine, ecstasy, crack and others capable of generating strong dependence. Progress in the transnational industrialization and sale of drugs has made the improper use of drugs a public health problem. Crack is a drug that has a rapid effect, produces intense disturbances and various forms of harm to its users, their family and communities, including loss of life. This study of youth involved with crack aims to contribute to a better understanding about this drug based on the experience of users, and to support prevention and treatment actions. The study found that crack has had an historic importance because it has called the attention of civil society and the State to the issue of drug use, given that chemical dependence does not begin with crack, but with other drugs that are much more highly consumed, such as alcohol, tobacco and marijuana. The study offers considerations about chemical dependency to crack, the related use of other drugs, relations of users with schools, family, friends, religion, leisure, involvement in situations of risk and the presence of social policies in the living experiences of students and users interviewed / As mudanças ocorridas historicamente nas sociedades ocidentais, marcaram o aumento do uso de substâncias psicoativas, principalmente entre os jovens, cujo acesso foi facilitado pelo desenvolvimento da indústria química, que possibilitou a produção de drogas como a heroína, a cocaína, a morfina, o ecstasy, o crack, entre outras, capazes de gerar forte dependência.
