Evaluating Usability EvaluationsDunlea, Allen Leo 01 June 2013 (has links) (PDF)
We live in an age when consumers can now shop and browse the web using hand-held devices. This means that competitive companies need to have a website to represent their brand and to conduct business. E-commerce sites need to pay special attention to the usability of their sites, since it has such an impact on how potential costumers view their brand.
Jakob Nielsen defines usability as a "quality attribute that assesses how easy user interfaces are to use"; he separates usability into five quality components: learnability, efficiency, memorability, errors and satisfaction. The current standard for testing usability involves having a number of users physically use a site in order to determine where they have trouble. This kind of usability testing can be time consuming and costly.
In order to mitigate some of these costs, many tools are being developed to help automate the process. However, many automated tools evaluate only one of the five components, or simply look for errors. In an attempt to increase the reliability and scope of such testing, this paper investigates the effectiveness of automated usability evaluators and proposes methods for future researchers to test them. Specifically, this paper details an experiment performed to test the some freely available usability evaluators against more traditional usability evaluations. The experiment attempts to determine whether automatic usability evaluations might be used as a cheaper alternative to more traditional usability evaluations.

Teleducação: criação e verificação de um material educacional na língua inglesa e portuguesa em fonoaudiologia / Teleducation: development and evaluation of an educational material in English and Portuguese languages on speech-language pathology and audiologyFanton, Cássia de Souza Pardo 26 September 2013 (has links)
The update and improvement of new teaching proposals, supported by Interactive Teleducation, have become an eminent necessity these days. Based on these proposals, the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology of the Bauru School of Dentistry (FOB-USP) has been working on the development of educational materials in a more dynamic approach of Health Education. Thereby, this study aimed to develop and evaluate a bilingual educational website in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from content of the CD-ROM Voice: Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Medicine, volume 1, created in 2006. This study was developed in two processes: first, the website was created in both languages and then, it was analyzed. The website maintained the CD-ROM layout and the same dynamic of present the content, although, fitted to online format, so it was necessary to develop, with the support of the Telemedicine Discipline of USP, Virtual Man videos of the phonemes in English and to record the audio of them from a native-American speaker production, thus, it was demanded to organized the content in both languages to ensure that the specificity of each was preserved. The evaluation was carried out applying a questionnaire created for this study which verified the scientific and technical quality of the website. Participated on the evaluation eight Brazilian specialists, being four of Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences and four of Portuguese area to evaluate the content in Portuguese and one native-American professionals of Speech-Language Pathology to analyze the content in English, all of them had a 20-day period to access and evaluate the material. The Brazilian researchers evaluated the website as an efficient educational material, since the average of answers for each section was not inferior to 4.2 and the maximum score to be given was 5. Also, 38% of the evaluators considered the website to be updated for three years, a good assessment to online learning objects. Only one American researcher answered the questionnaire, according to this evaluator, the website in English is as an excellent educational material, considering it to be updated for five years. It can be conclude that it was possible to develop the website in Portuguese and in English on Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences and the evaluation of the Brazilian and American versions verified that it is efficient technical and scientifically. However, further evaluations are necessary in order to ensure the quality and effectiveness in the American version.

Previous issue date: 2013-04-04 / Introduction: The digital media revolution has made information technology
accessible to a great number of users. However, the content in health, in
general, is available to the public based on their own experiences and without
scientific background. Due to this picture, the Ding Down team, a
multidisciplinary group of professionals from a teaching medical school, has
been providing care for individuals with Down syndrome (DS). They sought the
need to create a Website to spread accurate, scientific quality, following the
codes of conduct of healthcare based on the Health On Net foundation (HON)
and standardizations from the Institute of Health Information Technology -
(HiTi). DS is the most common cause of mental disorder from genetic etiology,
characterized by the presence of three copies of chromosome 21. Its
prevalence is approximately 1:660 births, and an outcome of great social
impact. Objectives: To Develop website and forum in DS and present the
importance of the internet as a source of health information. Materials and
Methods: For Website construction, the development platform and
manageability Joomla and PHP, and Web Server as the APACHE. The
operating system used was Linux Mandriva and software was: NVU14, editing
HTML and PHP, 15 GIMP image editing and documentation for BrOffice. The
above considerations about the importance of the Internet in health were based
on available studies based on sites with content, books, papers, theses or
dissertations submitted in English or Portuguese language, in full version.
Studies published between 1995 to 2012 were selected through an electronic search on Science Direct, Medline / Pubmed, Lilacs, SciELO, Biomed Central
and PsycInfo using the following keywords: Health or Health and internet,
combined with Internet History, quality of Health in the Internet. Results: The
website domain was hosted in the Intelig' Data Center and was defined as
http://www.dingdown.com.br and was well accepted by health professionals and
the community. Statistical data showed that, by the end of August 2012 was hit
a total of 6964 visitors surpassing the full year 2011, with 2396 visitors.
Regarding to health information on the Internet there was a growing number of
scientific journals in this area and most are available online, of which 20 000 are
in the field of Medicine. Above all, there is a huge number of websites that are
not certified. Conclusion: The access to content based on information with
credibility and scientific support could provide knowledge by clarifying about DS.
The Internet is an important device to spread healthcare knowledge, however, it
is important the authorities should regulate the quality of health information. The
result would provide reliability for users who are not able to differentiate the
credibility content from those presented in some portals without scientific
support.
Diante desta realidade, a
Health Onthe Net foundation (HON) e normatizações do Health
InformationTechologyInstitute (HITI).
Material e Métodos: Na construção do
no Science Direct, Medline/Pubmed, Lilacs, SciELO, Biomed Central e
combinados com Internet History, Qualityof Health in the Internet.

Digital information and communication technologies have been expanding the possibilities of the implementation of the principle of publicity in public administration and reassigning the concept of transparency resulting from this constitutional principle. Federal universities, as public entities, have the mission of publicizing actions they carry out using different instruments for this purpose. In this perspective, the present research had as general objective analyze how to what extent the websites of stricto sensu Academic Postgraduate Programs in Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF) are being used as instruments to provide transparency and visibility to the actions taken under these Programs. Once evidenced the existence of weaknesses in transparency and visibility given to the actions of these Programs on their websites, it was intended to answer the following question: what are the difficulties found by UFJF managers and technical-administrative staff to ensure the disclosure and the
transparency, through websites, of the actions developed by the Programs? The specific objectives defined for this study were: I) to describe the processes of management of information available on the websites of UFJF Postgraduate Programs; II) to analyze the procedures and challenges found by the professionals responsible for managing the websites to keep them complete and up to date; III) to propose an educational action plan for the improvement of the websites, just as the processes of management of the published information in these virtual spaces. It was assumed as a hypothesis for the causes of low visibility and transparency observed in the websites the lack of knowledge of the managers in relation to the content to be published in these spaces and also on the technical aspects necessary to organize and update these contents. The Qualitative and Quantitative case study methodologies were utilized in this paper, whose investigation was based on the bibliographical and documentary research, plus field research. The instruments used for data collection were the questionnaire, composed by closed and open questions applied to the
content managers of the websites, and interviews with semi-structured scripts, carried out with the managers of the sectors directly involved in the creation or management of websites. Among the evidences of the problem it was highlighted the results of the latest Capes’ evaluations, held in 2013 and 2017, in which, on average, 44% of UFJF sctrito sensu academic programs have not shown adequate transparency regarding their actions. Through field research it was possible to partially confirm the assumed hypothesis. It was confirmed that 80% of the website managers are in fact partially or totally ignorant of Capes' recommendations on the nature of the content that should be disclosed on the websites of the Programs. On the other hand, although approximately half of the managers did not participate in a training course, almost all of the participants say they know how to perform the basic actions necessary to manage the contents of the websites. Thus, the prognosis about the lack of technical knowledge of the managers as a cause of the low visibility and transparency verified in the websites was refuted. As a proposal for the improvement of the websites, the actions of standardization, normalization of contents, updating and improvement of the training course for its managers were suggested.

Intelligent phishing website detection system using fuzzy techniquesAburrous, Maher R., Hossain, M. Alamgir, Thabatah, F., Dahal, Keshav P. January 2008 (has links)
Phishing websites are forged web pages that are created by malicious people to mimic web pages of real websites and it attempts to defraud people of their personal information.
Detecting and identifying Phishing websites is really a complex and dynamic problem involving many factors and criteria, and
because of the subjective considerations and the ambiguities involved in the detection, Fuzzy Logic model can be an effective
tool in assessing and identifying phishing websites than any other
traditional tool since it offers a more natural way of dealing with
quality factors rather than exact values. In this paper, we present
novel approach to overcome the `fuzziness¿ in traditional website phishing risk assessment and propose an intelligent resilient and effective model for detecting phishing websites. The proposed
model is based on FL operators which is used to characterize the
website phishing factors and indicators as fuzzy variables and
produces six measures and criteria¿s of website phishing attack
dimensions with a layer structure. Our experimental results
showed the significance and importance of the phishing website
criteria (URL & Domain Identity) represented by layer one, and
the variety influence of the phishing characteristic layers on the
final phishing website rate.

Exploring website effectiveness and the influence of the Sustainable Design Award website on decision-making concerning sustainability within AS/A2 design and technologySimmons, Peter C. January 2010 (has links)
This PhD thesis looks at the meaning of website effectiveness and their influence on design decision-making. The research is focused within the context of designing by 16+ students and concerning sustainability. Design practice is explored within Advanced level General Certificate of Education (commonly referred to as AS/A2) Design and Technology, in order to define its particular characteristics. The study uses a theoretical position developed from the Assessment of Performance Unit s (APU) discussion document from 1982 as a framework to explore information retrieval within designing. The position of the study within designing and its place within research related to the use of knowledge, skills and values in designing is clarified. A literature review conducted conceived information retrieval as a characteristic of skill in the APU model. This study has established a consensus position on what is good practice in website development and design, and illustrates the structure of selected sustainable design websites, as well as assessing their navigation. The study indicates which types of information AS/A2 level student designers are seeking and how they use websites within their design work. The drivers behind sustainable design decision-making are identified. The understood consensus of sustainable development and sustainable design as an emerging area in designing is defined. The research is situated within the Sustainable Design Award (SDA) scheme that aimed to implement sustainable development into Design and Technology education and also outlines the content embodied in selected sustainable design websites. AS/A2 level Design and Technology education is used as the context for the main study. Action research was used to help develop the SDA website which was created as a primary assessment tool for the research study, concentrating on students aged 16 to 18. The usability of the selected websites was assessed by undergraduate designers from Loughborough University. A framework was developed and the effectiveness of the SDA website was measured before use, during use and after use . Quantitative and qualitative research methods were used to gather data from the students such as questionnaires, folio assessments and interviews. The results indicate a prominence of website use and sustainable design within AS/A2 level design work, however sustainable design is taught as a separate entity and is not fully integrated into design practice. Sustainable design websites were accessed by half of the 72 students questioned, but only 28% had used the SDA website. The information that the student designers sought fell into two categories: specific information and inspiration, supporting Lofthouse (2001a). The use of these decreased dramatically as projects progressed in AS/A2 level and undergraduate level design education, this pattern was consistent in website use, sustainable design and sustainable design website use. Cluster analysis was carried out on the sustainable design websites with the informative cluster identified as representing the appropriate strategy for effective higher level website design. This cluster included characteristics such as comprehensive content information on sustainability, inspirational images and product examples. Appropriate approaches to the detailed design and development of the SDA website are reported. Future recommended work includes a focus on before use, to investigate the affects of increasing awareness of the website. Relating wider sustainability issues to AS/A2 Design and Technology education is discussed, investigating further the use of eco-design tools as the discussion highlights conflicting opinions. An expansion to the cluster analysis to help define further the four website cluster groups. The development of a website that correlates the emerging patterns of website, sustainable design and sustainable design website use, with work on value judgements completed by Trimingham (2007).
