Background: Historically, many reference lines and planes of the human skull have been used in an attempt to depict the head in a natural head position (NHP) which is a relaxed/balanced position when looking ahead at their eye level. Head position correction has been attempted in fields such as anatomy, art, anthropology, orthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, and forensics. In orthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and plastic surgery, corrected head position (CHP) is particularly important for diagnosis of the normality/protrusion/retrusion of the patient’s facial skeleton. Usually a single plane, such as Frankfurt horizontal, is used to correct head position, but its angulation is variable between individuals, because each individual’s anatomy is unique. It has been found previously that the Neutral Horizontal Axis (NHA), Frankfurt horizontal (FH), Krogman-Walker plane (KW plane), and Palatal plane (P plane) demonstrated near parallelism, and these planes averaged -1 to -2 degrees from the true horizontal (HOR, which is a horizontal plane determined as being perpendicular to the earth’s gravitational force) with subjects in NHP. Methods: Craniofacial planes were measured in an Aboriginal Australian sample and in two contemporary samples obtained from Australian orthodontic practices, and the findings were compared with previous studies. Each sample consisted of 40 individuals (20 males and 20 females) with subjects in NHP. The Aboriginal Australian sample was longitudinal (T1, mean age 10 years; T2, mean age 14 years, and T3, mean age 18 years) enabling NHP to be assessed over approximately 8 years. A soft tissue Ear - nose plane (EN plane) was also investigated. Results: NHP reproducibility over 8 years demonstrated a mean of absolute difference of 2.9 degrees, with a range of differences from -7.9 to 8.2 degrees and a standard deviation of differences equal to 3.6 degrees. The Neutral Horizontal Axis (NHA), Frankfurt horizontal (FH), Krogman-Walker plane (KW plane), and Palatal plane (P plane) demonstrated near parallelism with each other, and averaged between 0 and -3 degrees from HOR. On average, EN plane was horizontal but was variable. Conclusions: NHP is not consistently reproducible at the individual level. For hard tissue images, the combined use of NHA, FH, KW plane, and P plane enables prediction of CHP. Additionally, the rectangular shape of the lower orbit - nasal airway region appears to be useful for correcting head position. In facial soft tissue images, EN plane in combination with other visual factors helps to correct head position. Η αποφυγή συγκρούσεων με αναγνώριση της θέσης και της σχετικής ταχύτητας προπορευόμενων οχημάτων είναι μια άκρως ενδιαφέρουσα εφαρμογή που βρίσκεται σε πειραματικό στάδιο. Η ύπαρξη πολλαπλών αντικειμένων στο οπτικό πεδίο της κάμερας δημιουργεί προβλήματα στον ακριβή εντοπισμό του προπορευόμενου οχήματος, ενώ η έλλειψη βάσεων δεδομένων με κατηγοριοποιημένα παραδείγματα είναι ένα επιπλέον εμπόδιο για την ανάπτυξη της εφαρμογής αυτής.
Στην εργασία αυτή περιγράφονται οι υπάρχουσες εφαρμογές όσον αφορά στο πρόβλημα της μηχανικής όρασης στην αυτοκίνηση, τα προβλήματα που λύνουν αλλά και οι δυσκολίες που συνεχίζουν να υπάρχουν.
Αναφέρονται οι αιτίες της έλλειψης βάσεων δεδομένων με κατηγοριοποιημένα παραδείγματα και αναλύεται η ημιαυτόματη μέθοδος (Random Walker) στην οποία καταφεύγουμε για τον λόγο αυτό.
Εν συνεχεία θα παρουσιαστούν τα αποτελέσματα της ανάπτυξης σε Matlab που πραγματοποιήθηκε, τα συμπεράσματα που προέκυψαν, αλλά και οι μελλοντικές προκλήσεις. / In this diplom work, the ways followed to deal with the issue of mechanical vision in car driving are described. The reasons why there there are not any specific data sets are decribed and the focus of this work is on the Random Walker algorithm.

Este trabalho consiste em uma leitura das diferentes formas de representação que podem ser atribuídas à personagem Tashi, protagonista do romance Possessing the Secret of Joy (1992), da escritora negra estadunidense Alice Walker. Antes desta obra, Tashi já havia aparecido em dois romances de Walker, primeiro em The Color Purple (1982), como personagem periférica, e depois como menção em The Temple of my Familiar (1989). Com Tashi, surge a temática da prática da circuncisão feminina, ritual ao qual a personagem se submete no início da idade adulta. O foco de observação do trabalho se volta para a maneira na qual a revolta da autora é transformada em um meio de representação criativa. Walker utiliza sua obra abertamente como instrumento ideológico para que o tema da “mutilação genital” (termo utilizado pela autora) receba ampla atenção da mídia e da crítica em geral. O propósito da investigação é avaliar até que ponto o engajamento social da autora contribui de uma forma positiva em seu trabalho e até que ponto o mesmo engajamento o atrapalha. Para a análise das diferentes questões relacionadas ao tema de “female genital cutting” (FGC), termo que eu utilizo no decorrer da pesquisa, os trabalhos de críticas e escritoras feministas como Ellen Gruenbaum, Lightfoot-Klein, Nancy Hartsock, Linda Nicholson, Efrat Tseëlon e a egípcia Nawal El Saadawi serão consultados. With Tashi, the author introduces the issue of female circumcision, a ritual Tashi submits herself to at the beginning of her adult life. The focus of observation lies in the ways in which the author’s anger is transformed into a means of creative representation. Walker uses her novel Possessing the Secret of Joy openly as a political instrument so that the expression “female mutilation” (term used by the author) receives ample attention from the media and critics in general. The aim of this investigation is to evaluate to what extent Walker’s social engagement contributes to the development of her work and to what extent it undermines it. The Legacy of the Filibuster War: National Identity, Collective Memory, and Cultural Anti-ImperialismJanuary 2013 (has links)
abstract: The Legacy of the Filibuster War: National Identity, Collective Memory, and Cultural Anti-Imperialism is a dissertation project analyzing how the Filibuster War becomes a staple for Costa Rican national identity. This work presents several challenges to traditional theories of modernization in the creation of nationalism. By focusing on the development of cultural features defined by the transformation of collective memory, this project argues that national identity is a dynamic process defined according to local, national, and international contexts. Modernization theories connect the development of nationalism to the period of consolidation of the nation-state, usually during the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. The Costa Rican case demonstrates that, while modernization coincides with the creation of symbols of official nationalism, the Filibuster War became a symbol of national identity beginning in the 1850s, and it has been changing throughout the twentieth century. Threats to sovereignty and imperialist advances served to promote the memory of the Filibuster War, while local social transformations, as the abolition of the army and internal political conflict forced drastic changes on the interpretation of the war and the establishment of a national narrative that adjusts to social transformation. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. History 2013

Previous issue date: 2008 / Resumo: Este trabalho tem como objetivo refletir sobre o processo de legitimação, pelo Governo Bush, da guerra entre Estados Unidos e Iraque, iniciada em março de 2003. Com efeito, os atentados terroristas de 11 de setembro transformaram o cenário sócio-político internacional e exigiram que os Estados Unidos assumissem uma nova postura. Assim, o presidente George W. Bush deu início a uma das maiores transformações na política externa norte-americana desde o início da Guerra Fria, liderando um movimento de combate ao terrorismo chamado Guerra ao Terror. O corpus é composto de quinze (15) pronunciamentos, os quais abrangem um período que começa em 29 de janeiro de 2002, quando Bush informou o estado da União, até 29 de dezembro de 2006, quando Saddam Hussein foi executado. A perspectiva teórica adotada é a da análise do discurso, tal como desenvolvida por Pêcheux (1969, 1988 e 1997), Orlandi (1990, 1996, 1999 e 2003) e Maingueneau (1997 e 2005). Finalmente, à conclusão do trabalho, verificamos que a guerra Estados Unidos versus Iraque é um acontecimento resultante de um intenso trabalho de formulações que se sustentam em sentidos que, a nosso ver, remetem ao discurso fundador dos Estados Unidos da América / Abstract: This paper focuses on analyzing the process of legitimation of the war between the United States and Iraq performed by Bush Government, which started in March, 2003. Needless to say, the terrorist attacks of 11/9 transformed the international social-political scenario and demanded a new posture from the United States. For this reason, president George W. Bush has initiated one of the most significant changes in the North American external politics since the beginning of Cold War, leading a movement for fighting terrorism called War on Terror. The corpus consists of fifteen (15) speechs, ranging from January 29, 2002, when Bush informed the State of the Union, to December 29, 2006, when Saddam Hussein was executed. The theoretical basis adopted refers to the Discourse Analysis, as proposed by Pêcheux (1969, 1988 and 1977), Orlandi (1990, 1996, 1999 and 2003) and Maingueneau (1997 and 2005). Hybridization of the Self, Colonial Discourse and the Deconstruction of Value Systems : A Postcolonial Literary Theory Perspective of Literature inculpating ColonialismBurns, Brian January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this essay is to provide a perspective on literature inculpating colonialism using postcolonial literary theory and method. The subject material incorporates four novels studied during the literature modules for the English course at Högskolan Gävle (HIG). The four novels combine to highlight various issues that affect the Self-identity through hybridization and colonial discourse as well as the detrimental nature of the colonial project for indigenous value systems during the period of colonialism. There is also application of theories and concepts raised in academic literature from within and outside the curriculum of HIG. The use of the postcolonial literary methodology provides a critical perspective of the aforementioned literature while implementing theories associated with that movement such as hybridity and the redefining of borders as well as focusing on the social, cultural, political and religious impact of the coloniser’s activities in the colonies as raised in the novels. The most significant findings of this essay include the roles of isolation and disconnection within the colonial project and the subsequential effects on the colonised and their descendants. There are findings and observations of the level of strategic application of universalistic colonial discourse and the intrinsic application of the language used in the objectification of the indigenous and the subjugation of their value systems. The role of perception is also highlighted including findings on the social implications for the colonies inhabitants, both dissident and conformist, raised within the chosen literature and this essay. The essay also examines the application of various strands of literary theory incorporated within postcolonialism including poststructuralism and psychoanalytic criticism as well as anthropology material. The conclusion of this essay culminates with the conflicting interpretations of progress as a universalism that counters the theories of postcolonialists and poststructuralists and their subsequent refusal to succumb to literature’s prevalence. The subjectivity of the postcolonial literary theorist and the self-imposed parameters restrict the interpretation of the colonial and postcolonial literature. The aforementioned progress defined by improved standards of health, education and social justice is lacking in presence in both the postcolonial literature and the accompanying literary theory counterpart. Subsequently, the disconnected voice of isolation and the split/double identity take precedence over higher standards of living and the appreciation of access to improved human rights and social justice within postcolonial society.

William Duckworth's "Southern Harmony": A Comprehensive Exploration into the Synthesis of Two Archetypal American GenresBoyd, Jordan D. 05 1900 (has links)
In his Southern Harmony collection, William Duckworth extracts existing material from shape-note hymns found in William Walker's 1835 publication A Southern Harmony and Musical Companion. He then applies minimalist and postminimalist processes to this material to create innovation choral compositions. This document provides a comprehensive analysis of the methods used to construct all twenty works in Duckworth's collection by tracing the extracted source material through the fabric of the new compositions. This study provides substantial evidence of Duckworth's place as a pioneer of the postminimalist genre. It also provides a discussion on the vocal implications of utilizing shape-note hymns as source material as traditional performances of the genre are typically associated with a unique vocal style.
